What happened last:
After the slumber finally started, Princess Bubblegum started to go down her list of things-to-do. After accomplishing the first on her mental list, they were about to play some games until Beemo walked in and proposed that they play some video games. It was innocent at first but a mistake was made…
M: "So… what are we doing again?"
F: "We gotta get over to-"
*BOOM*
Finn was interrupted by the blaring sound of a rocket whizzing by everyone's heads and exploding in the water behind them. The initial attack was followed up by loud popping sounds and the sound of hundreds of bullets flying past everyone. Luckily, they were on the other side of a small hill and mostly safe.
PB: "Ahhh!" She screamed in terror and dove to the ground.
Marceline instantly jumped to the ground as well but she seemed to react more calmly to what was going on.
M: "FINN! What the heck is going on?!" She wasn't angry, she was just yelling over the loud sounds.
F: "Ummm… we need to get to that big building to win this game. Beemo put us in the wrong one."
M: "Seems easy enough." She said calmly.
F: "What? This is gonna be crazy hard!"
M: "Finn… I played this game a bunch of times before. Just… not like this… It should be fine."
F: "You do know how Beemo's games work when you're in them, right? Like… you don't just get a retry if you lose…"
M: "Y-yeah… I totes knew that…" She started to feel a bit worried. She knew that she would have to rely on pure skill and some luck if everyone wanted to get out alive.
F: "If you say so..."
M: "So, what do we need to do, hero?" She said with a beautiful smile.
She looked awesome in all of that protective gear that she was wearing. But then again to Finn, she always looked awesome.
Finn then got everyone in a close huddle and began drawing a "game plan" in the sand; using various lines, sticks and rocks to represent certain things. Marceline was able to help with the planning and it was done in about two minutes. This was yet another piece of evidence that showed how perfectly Finn and Marceline work together.
Finn made sure that everyone was sure of their main roles in their plan. Jake was carrying the big gun, so his job was to scare all of their enemies away so that everyone could move forward. Bubblegum's job was to destroy the green slime tanks if they saw any and to destroy just about everything else with her Ball Blam Burglerber if they needed her to. Marceline was supposed to spot any enemies that were either far away, or just hard to see and take them out. Her weapon could shoot further than the others and it had a scope on it. And last but not least, Finn was supposed to be the leader. His job was to make on-the-spot adjustments to their plans and to pretty much do everything in his power to keep everything going smoothly.
He was quickly becoming quite the tactical genius. His skills could easily match those of Princess Bubblegum. The main difference between them now is the fact that Finn's been through things like this more regardless of Bubblegum's age and wisdom and can operate under pressure with faster decision making and efficiency than her.
F: "Ok, is everyone ready to go?"
Marceline and Jake gave a confident nod and the princess was sitting down looking terrified. She's never experienced something like this, even though it's just a game…
…a game that could cost the life of anyone on their team.
M: "PB, are you ok?" She said as she placed her arm on Bonnibel's shoulder.
PB: "Y-yeah… just a bit nervous…" She was under exaggerating of course. She was on the verge on a nervous breakdown.
M: "Don't worry, PB. You're in good hands."
Marceline could easily detect the princess's fear and gave her a kiss on the forehead to cheer her up.
PB: "Ok." She said with a smile and stood up. That's all she needed to give her the motivation to beat this game with everyone else. She knew that she had to be strong for everyone else.
F: "Ok then. Let's do this." He took a deep breath to calm himself.
Finn wasn't the only one who needed to calm himself; everyone was on edge and scared of what was going to happen. They all knew, possibly with the exception of Princess Bubblegum, that they all had the chance of dying
Adrenaline was already making its way through everyone's veins and they started to feel that sharp high that people feel before they do something incredibly dangerous. They were all terrified; they knew that they needed to focus and be strong to stay alive.
The popping sounds slowed down quickly after the two minutes of planning that Finn and Marceline took. This was as good a time as ever to start their plan.
F: "Jake?"
Jake simply nodded and ran up the small hill and held down the trigger on his big gun. The rattling sound that it produced was both terrifying and cool at the same time.
F: "Ok, let's go!" Finn screamed with ferocity and everyone got up and ran behind Jake.
They rapid flashing of Jake's light machine gun was enough to get everyone riled up. With every round that came out of Jake's gun increased everyone's confidence. The more the enemy was terrified, the more their confidence rose.
They all moved as a cohesive unit. Jake, Finn and Marceline were very effective and followed the plans to a tee. Bubblegum just followed and took cover behind everything that she could and waited to move whenever everyone else did. She didn't mean to be like this; she was just terrified beyond belief.
Their plan was simple. They take out any enemies that got in the way and they moved towards the building with every chance they got. The enemies that they faced looked like demons from the Nightosphere except that they were all carrying guns.
They were all moving towards the building as fast as possible and Jake was attracting the most attention with his large gun. Eventually, after being lucky enough to not get shot, their luck ran out.
A stray bullet came from out of nowhere and hit Jake on the shoulder. He immediately screamed out in pain.
J: "AHHH! I'm hit!"
Finn, with quick thinking, quickly returned fire and was able to take out any immediate threats then pulled Jake's leg and dragged him behind cover with himself.
F: "Marcy! Cover me!" Finn yelled. The bullets were flying all around with an increased intensity after Jake got hit.
M: "Got it!" She yelled back and returned fire. She didn't bother much with accuracy right now; she was just trying to scare the enemy enough to get them to stop shooting for a few moments. And it worked well.
Finn worked quickly on Jake. He had to heal him as fast as possible. He took out a small medical bag that he had and placed a bandage over his wound. It was oddly the only thing in the bag. And what was even odder, Jake's injury seemed to heal almost instantly. Just like Cyclopes tears.
J: "Whoa man, I feel better already." He said as he patted the spot on his shoulder where he got shot.
F: "Yeah man. Now, let's finish this." Finn said and the two brothers bumped fists.
They made a lot of progress in about 10 minutes and they were only about 150 feet from the building. They came up on some large rocks and took cover before advancing.
Finn and Marceline were right next to each other the entire time. It's as if being together made them a more efficient and lethal team. They would occasionally lock eyes during the brutal firefight and it helped them to communicate with each other. There's a fire burning inside their hearts and it grows brighter with everything that they go through.
*CRACK*
The deafening sound of a high-powered rifle made Finn shudder and he jumped to the ground.
F: "AH! Marcy! I think there's one on the roof! He almost hit me!" Finn screamed as he flinched when a bullet hit the rock right next to his head. He could hear the bullet ricochet after it hit the rock.
M: "I'm on it…" She said calmly.
About 3 seconds later, Marceline rose up and aimed her rifle at the assailant, shot at it then got back behind the rock that they were hiding behind. She started reloading immediately after.
M: "Got 'em."
F: "Mathematical!"
There was a lot of wind blowing while they were in combat; kicking up dust as they proceeded towards the building. The wind also made Marceline's hair flow soo gracefully. It's probably dangerous that it's moving soo freely but she obviously can handle herself so it doesn't really matter.
Marceline looked into Finn's eyes for a second to admire him then her eyes shot wide open.
M: "Finn! Behind you!" She screamed as she fumbled to reload her gun.
Finn quickly turned around and shot the three demons behind him as if he had done it thousands of times before. They were destroyed before Marceline could even finish reloading.
Jake was quiet the whole time because he was busy shooting hundreds upon hundreds of bullets and could hardly hear anything.
F: "Glob that was close!"
M: "Yeah! But… how come we know how to use these things soo well?" She was talking about how they all knew how to use guns soo well.
F: "I dunno… maybe it's a part of the game?"
It was actually programmed in the game to help beginner players play the game without dying constantly.
F: "Anyway, we're almost there so we need to hurry up guys! Let's go!"
Then, like clockwork, they all got up and started running towards the building. It seemed as though they took out all of the enemies because they weren't getting shot at anymore. They had a clear path to victory.
They got up from behind cover, ran about 100 feet and were almost there but the worst possible thing happened. A green slime tank appeared.
J: "Oh Glob!" Jake yelled and everyone quickly dove behind the nearest rock or something that could shield them.
The green slime tank definitely saw them because it launched a large explosive shell at everyone and it exploded on the other side of the rock that everyone was taking cover behind. When the shell exploded, it shook everything and it made everyone's ears ring loudly. They all were temporarily deaf as their ears adjusted to the massive impulse of decibels that invaded their ears.
J: "Man! I'm gettin' sick of this game!" He was getting frustrated because he knew that he couldn't do anything about the tank.
F: "Umm… uhhh…" Finn was trying to think quickly. His head was turning everywhere. He was trying to find something that could possibly help in their situation.
F: "Bubblegum!"
PB: "W-what?" She had a few tears running down her cheeks but she tried to act as if she wasn't crying.
Finn didn't want to, but he knew that ignoring the fact that the princess was crying was the smartest thing to do. They needed to worry about the task at hand. For now, they needed to motivate her and get her to regain her confidence to continue.
F: "You need to take out that tank with your Ball Blam Burglerber. You're the only one that can destroy it." Finn was trying to convey the seriousness of the situation to Bubblegum. Not that it wasn't obvious.
PB: "I-I can't, Finn. I'm too scared to move…" She was still on the verge of tears.
F: "Globbit…" He thought to himself. He was getting frustrated. They were almost at their goal.
F: "Everyone, fall back!" He shouted then dropped a metal canister that produced a thick gray cloud of smoke. They were able to retreat a few yards back to regroup and think about their options.
F: "Jake and Marcy, you two stay here and watch for the tank I'll be right back." Finn, almost aggressively, took the princess by the hand and they both moved behind some other cover a bit further back.
It's time for a pep talk.
F: "PB, what's wrong? We're almost out of this game. We just need you to take out that tank and we'll make it out of this."
PB: "I… I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm just soo scared, Finn. I usually have amazing control over myself and my emotions but this is just too much."
F: "I understand, PB. But we need you to do this. We can't do this without you." Finn's heart began to race, but for a different reason. He didn't know why, but it surely wasn't because the heat of battle.
PB: "I know, Finn… Maybe you could just take my Ball Blam Burglerber and do it yourself?" She hoped that the game worked that way. But it didn't.
F: "Princess, it doesn't work that way. That's why we need you."
PB: "Oh Finn, please stop calling me princess. And it's not like you guys really need me…" She was feeling sad and useless at this point.
Finn honestly didn't know what to do. He knew that once the princess gets like this, it's virtually impossible to get her to think differently. Everyone was under a great deal of stress so it obviously affected everyone. Some more than others, but it was still a mental affliction.
F: "No Bonnie… we don't need you…"
Bubblegum looked up at Finn and her eyes began to tear up.
And that's when Finn placed his hand on Bonnibel's cheek and looked her straight in the eyes. His mind was almost corrupted by the stress in this dangerous battlefield.
Was it corrupt or was he making the only decision that would save everyone's lives?
F: "…Because I need you." He said as he leaned in and kissed the candy princess. He said the only thing he could think of in the situation that would possibly help her to regain her courage.
They kissed ever soo gently, almost not making contact with their lips but it was enough for Finn to get the bubblegum flavored taste on his lips. The kiss only lasted a few short seconds but it was sufficient to get the princess's confidence to increase.
He didn't know entirely why he did it or why he thought it would work… but it worked.
And that's all that matters… right?
Maybe it was the fear of losing everyone, and coupled with the fear of his own death brought old feelings back up from the depths of Finn's heart? Maybe he really did think that it was the best tactical decision. After all… it did work.
PB: "Ok… let's do this then." She said as they pulled away. Her mind was boggled with what just happened but she felt brave enough to finish the job. Her cheeks were slightly blushing pink from Finn's assertiveness and her rushing hormones.
For once, she didn't make the move. Finn did.
They were about to get up and leave their spot until Marceline and Jake came running back behind cover with them.
M: "Finn!"
F: "What Marcy?" He was too focused on winning the game and surviving that he didn't even think about what he just did.
He'll have to tell her later and he knows it.
M: "The tank realized that we can't destroy it and it chased after us so…"
J: "…we're totally screwed, man!" Jake frantically added.
PB: "Not yet, we're not." She said and hopped up and jumped up on top of the rock that everyone was hiding behind before anyone could say anything else.
She saw the tank immediately and it was aiming right at her. She had a quick shock of almost paralyzing fear hit her heart. Being dead in the sights of the tank was almost enough to destroy all of her motivation and confidence but it wasn't quite terrifying enough.
Her love for her friends and Finn was stronger than her fear of death in this moment.
PB: "I'll see you in the Nightosphere you sick freak." She said in a low voice and launched a round from her Ball Blam Burglerber.
Everything was moving in slow motion for Bubblegum. The scent of the carbon as the explosive round launched out of her weapon was euphoric to her. The blazing heat behind the round as it was sent flying through the air towards the enemy was almost impossible to explain. And the sight of the massive explosion as the tank was destroyed made the princess feel something that she couldn't explain. It was… intoxicating.
The explosion from the tank explosion rocked everyone and they felt a bit of shell-shock but they all quickly recovered once they realized that they had succeeded.
F: "Yeah, Bonnie! You did it!" Finn yelled and everyone began to cheer as soon as the explosion calmed down.
Marceline noticed that Finn called the princess by her first name again. It was almost suspicious to her so it made her curious. But now wasn't the time to bring it up.
F: "Ok everyone let's-"
J: "-get in that dang building! I wanna get outta here!"
Everyone got up and ran towards the building. Everything was fine until they got inside…
*BOOM* *BOOM*
PB: "Finn! What's that?!"
F: "I think that's the sound of artillery!" He screamed in fear, knowing that the situation just went from bad to worse to catastrophic.
J: "Oh man! This is bad!"
They all got as close to the center of the building as they could. It was like a hotel so they all hid behind the main counter. The building began to shake violently as chandeliers and other pieces of the ceiling began to fall and crash on the ground all around everyone.
F: "What now, Beemo?!" He yelled at the ceiling, hoping that Beemo would answer to give everyone more guidance. They were exactly where they needed to be. What was wrong?
J: "Screw it, man!" Maybe Beemo was wrong let's just run out the back door-" Suddenly some of the support beams for the roof near the exit to the back door broke and the ceiling collapsed, blocking the back exit.
J: "Oh Grod… maybe we could-"
M: "-No…" She said as her feet grew cold and her eyes shot open in terror.
Everyone looked towards the front door, which was the only other way out of the collapsing building.
More demon-like enemies began to storm the entrance. They were coming over one of the hills in the distance and they had no possible chance to leave.
They were trapped.
F: "M-maybe it just takes a second before the game takes us out of here?" He ran out of ideas and solutions. There was nothing else to do besides pray to Glob that they got out.
PB: "Well, if we're gonna die in here… then I might as well die in style." She was almost acting crazy at this point. The mix of her fear, courage, adrenaline, and newly found bravery gave her a "never accept defeat" type of mentality. She's going to take as many out with her as she can.
The princess hopped over the counter and charged the massive horde of demons as she fired from the hip. She was reckless and didn't care. Everyone else just stayed put and hoped for the game to end before the building collapsed.
Before Bubblegum was even out the door, the building became incredibly unstable and began to fall apart everywhere. This was it, the building was collapsing because of the constant barrages and repeated salvos of slime artillery and it was going to take everyone with it.
The lights all went out. The ceiling came crashing down. The walls shattered like glass. The support beams crumbled beneath the massive weight of the building as it caved in on everyone. Marceline and Finn didn't know what to do so they just stood up and looked each other in the eyes. They shared a quick embrace and kissed each other for the last time before they would surely die.
This kiss was more passionate that most other kisses. This was the same type of kiss that was shared when a lover was at the deathbed of their other half. As the dying half's life light became dull and began to go out, they shared their final loving embrace with the person that brought them a reason to live for years.
It was all hopeless until the green flash of light that everyone was hoping for came and erased the demonic "paradise" and returned everyone to the real world.
They all survived. And by some slim chance… they made it out alive.
Well, that was a pretty long chapter. So, what did you guys think? :p
