It was the piercing beeping noise that woke him up. It would ring for a few seconds, then pause, then ring again, then pause and then ring again. He thought about ignoring it, but after it started up again from a long pause he finally snapped.
"Alright, who's doing that?" he demanded, sitting up from his makeshift bed on the floor. They were over at Peter's for the Easter vacation, and so far it was pretty relaxing break, if you count throwing water balloons and other substances in the neighbours' inflatable pool 'relaxing'.
The ringing abruptly halted mid-shriek and silence befell once again.
"That's right, you better stop." James replied, settling down on his sleeping bag. "Right when I was going to get up, too. Nobody likes it when I get up."
A snort sounded somewhere to his right under a yellow sleeping bag. "Yes, that's because they don't want you to look at them. Off chance they might get turn into stone and all that."
James nasally mimicked Remus, and threw his blanket over his head to go back to sleep.
Ring! Riiiing!
James disentangled himself from his bed setting, stomping heavily towards Peter's bedroom door, and almost stepping on Sirius' head in the process. After throwing the door open, he swiveled his head around to locate the noise. A curly green wire connected to an equally green box placed on a small desk in the hallway looped around the corner.
"… I almost got the door open this time, Nat!" A happy giggle sounded. "They're not even awake yet, and it's, like, one in the afternoon… yeeep, they're all in there. I still can't believe they're in my house… love potions are good and all, but I'd much rather steal their underwear…"
James eyed the green cord warily after the last note and decided to intervene. Retracing his steps, he made sure to make as much noise as possible as he moved towards the wire, bumping into walls and walking heavily.
There was an audible squeak and thump around the corner and Lizzie Pettigrew emerged, blushing.
"Um, it's not what it looks like…"
The fifth year decided to cut the girl some slack and raised his eyebrows confusedly. "What's not what it looks like?"
Lizzie's eyes bugged out, and she swiftly cleared her face from any suspicious expressions. "Nothing!" she said cheerfully, placing a thin green instrument onto the box on the stand and jogged off without another word.
James stared after her incredulously and looked down at the box. It had a wheel with ten holes that he could most likely fit one of his fingers in smack in the middle. Underneath each hole was a number from zero to nine. And below those numbers were letters of the alphabet; three for each number. It was also secured to the wall. I wonder…
"Peter, what is this?"
Three boys were jerked roughly awake. The source of their abrupt end to their sleep was one James Potter, looming over them with a green telephone box in one hand, a cord that was once connected to the wall in the other.
"What did you do?" screeched Peter, jumping up from his bed and yanking the box away from James, cradling it in his hands with a look of sheer terror on his face. "Mum is going to kill me! Grams gave this to us!"
"Well you can just ask her for a new one."
"We can't!" exploded Peter, rounding on Sirius. "She's dead!"
"Oh."
"Yes oh!" Peter continued, looking a bit disconcerted. At that moment, Remus begrudgingly opened one eye to see what the fuss was all about, but closed it hastily as an incoming cord came swinging by. "What am I going to do now?" he wailed.
"Are you a wizard, or not?" said Sirius impatiently.
A look of understanding dawned on Peter's face. Taking out his wand, he pointed it to the telephone and said, "Reparo!" The phone's ripped wire magically mended itself. Right when Peter plugged the cord in an electrical socket, the telephone rang.
They all shot each other sideways glances, no one moving. They weren't sure who jumped first, but a second later, they were all fighting towards the phone. Remus managed to get there first.
"Hello?" he answered. "Who is this? Oh, Natalie, pleased to meet you. I'm Remus Lupin." He held the telephone away from his ear as a loud shriek sounded from it. An abrupt click followed after and then a dial tone. "Was it something I said?"
James looked elated and snatched the telephone from Remus. "This is brilliant! We can call Evans on this thing! She won't be able to avoid me any longer. Does anyone know how to contact her?"
Three tired voices sounded simultaneously, "Oh boy."
