Hiccup got through the next few weeks of school without a hitch. At least until the Theta Senior Banquet. He had been doing well until the dinner when he truly felt as if he were losing two fathers this year; Bork was graduating.
Bork had been given a scholarship to obtain a doctorate in physics at UCLA. He'd be states away now and Hiccup felt a weight on his chest as the Theta's held a dinner in honor of the senior's accomplishments. Each senior stood up and was toasted for his success and gave a speech. When it was Bork's turn Hiccup tried not to cry. He avoided Bork's eyes for the duration of the speech until Bork spoke his name. Hiccup looked up with tearful eyes and Bork smiled at him, "You're gonna be the best of us, Hiccup. Take us far." The other Theta's nodded in approval and toasted him. Hiccup let one tear slip down his cheek as he nodded. A few Theta's patted him on the back. Hiccup was coming to learn that the Theta's did not judge crying, especially in Hiccup's case. If anything, they viewed it as courageous. Hiccup wanted to be cheerful for his brothers, they were graduating after all and going on with their lives, it was what every college student dreamed of, right? He only wished Bork wasn't going away so far.
Bork sat back down next to Hiccup and patted his shoulder, "Don't worry, I promise to visit during Alumni events. You just have to be there, deal?"
Hiccup looked up at him and nodded, lately talking wasn't his strong suit.
"Look Hiccup." Bork said quietly as the other Theta's around them dined and celebrated, "I know you've had a rough end of the year. No words can express how sorry I am about your father."
Hiccup swallowed thickly. All of the Theta's had given him support the last few weeks, trying to make sure he was eating and getting sleep. Hiccup seemed to do okay, but he had lost a little weight and the bags under his eyes were more of an indicator that he still cried a lot. But Bork just had a way of really getting to Hiccup deeper than all the support of all of his brothers.
Bork continued, "Never hesitate to call or contact me for anything, okay? Promise to stay in touch. And I mean like every month I expect to check in, got it?"
Hiccup smiled at that. Totally something Jack would say to make sure Hiccup was okay, "Okay." He said hoarsely.
Bork smiled and shoved a plate of ribs towards Hiccup, "You might wanna grab some before the carnivores take them all."
Hiccup laughed for the first time in a while and took one to appease Bork.
"You have tens of thousands of brothers here for you." Bork reminded him, looking around, "Don't waste a second of it."
Hiccup wiped some of the barbeque sauce off his cheek and swallowed, "I know you and Alvin never got along…will I have problems like that?"
Bork laughed, "Alvin and I are actually really good friends, we just show it differently than most. I look at it as we challenge each other. You'll come to find every relationship be it brotherhood or love will be different. You see we keep growing and never really stop, we may lose friends we may keep friends and we may gain friends. The important thing is to never stop gaining even when you lose."
Hiccup hung on to his words like a lifeline and smiled, "Do you think Jack and I will make it?"
Bork shrugged, "Who knows, but I certainly hope you do."
"Thanks Bork…for everything. Those are words I wish I could have told my dad more often. So…I really mean it."
"I appreciate that Hiccup. I'm glad I picked you out of the 'sorry lot'." Bork laughed.
Hiccup chuckled and took a swig of his soda, lightening up a bit.
Bork smiled down at him, "Who knows, I might be looking at the next Theta president in a few years."
Hiccup snorted, "Sure."
"Damn straight, sure." Bork said firmly.
Hiccup looked around at his fellow pledge brothers and remembered how amazing it was to be a leader to them, how great it made him feel to know they counted on him…but also how stressful it was.
"I'll think on it." Hiccup promised.
"You better." Bork nodded with a grin, "But don't think on it too long, we don't want Dingwall calling the shots."
Hiccup almost spit out his drink at that, "Hey! He's actually a pretty smart dude!"
"I don't doubt that…I just doubt that the president's furniture will be booger free."
Hiccup didn't have the heart to tell him that as a pledge prank Dingwall had sat in the president's chair and picked his nose leaving a few strays behind already. Hiccup would just remember to get the stuff dry cleaned before he sat in it.
….
Jack felt like he was attending a huge movie premier. The whole school was decked out to exhibit the student's work. The halls were filled with paintings and sculptures. In the auditorium they would be viewing the plays or movies that at least 10 students had submitted. The first hour consisted of cocktails and a viewing of the artwork. The next hour would be viewing the videos and plays. After that was voting and a dinner. During dinner the president of the college would announce who the winners were. It was a big evening and Jack had worn his best. Flynn, Pascal, and Baby all decked themselves out as well and accompanied him. He only wished Hiccup could be here, but alas, Hiccup had finals this week. Jack just promised to take pictures and let Hiccup know if they'd won.
Jack adjusted his blue tie and Baby beamed in her mini sleeveless cocktail dress. Jack had no clue what to make of it to be honest, it was so colorful and patterned. Not to mention all the jewels on the bodice were enough to put his head in a spin. She sure knew how to mix her fabrics. Pascal looked exotic in his black shiny suit with a green snake-like tie. Flynn at least matched Jack and did not look as…extreme as the other two.
All admired the artwork and it felt like such a formal affair as judges went around examining the pieces. There was small talk among the students, faculty, and visitors and Jack was honestly starting to get bored once he'd seen everything. He decided to text Hiccup to see how he was doing.
He laughed when he opened his phone.
Kill me now. I hate finals.
Jack smiled as he texted back; No my darling, don't do it! Come back to the light!
He waited a few seconds and felt the buzz of his phone; Ha Ha. I hate you.
I love you more, Jack texted back, You'll be fine, Hic. Almost done.
The last thing he got was an emoji smiley face with a heart before a good luck text from Hiccup.
Jack pocketed his phone when he heard the president at the microphone ushering them all to the auditorium.
Jack grew nervous as they all filed in, hoping to get good seats. He sat down in between Flynn and Baby and watched as each film was introduced, they would be the third entry.
Jack was truly impressed with all the work that went into every video, he didn't know how on earth his video would beat the others; that is until his entry came on. There he was decked in Baby's fashion surrounded by Pascal's artwork and Flynn's masterful editing skills. He couldn't help but smile as footage of him and Hiccup appeared briefly. He could see people in the audience bobbing their heads to his song and pointing out the colors in the video. Their hard work had paid off, even if they didn't win. By the time it was over he almost didn't care if he stayed or not, he felt like a winner just watching it.
But of course, he could not abandon his friends to a festive night they so deserved after all of their teamwork. By the time dinner came around he was getting congratulations and well wishes from student's he'd never met before. Coming from a high school where he was considered invisible this was so incredible to be accepted.
The voting was over and the awards were about to be given. There would be at least ten awards given to honor both individual and team art works. But the one everyone wanted was the scholarship that went to the best all around. Jack waited with bated breath as they called out the individual winners. Jack's heart fell a little when his team didn't win best team video but he was stunned when four checks were brought out and the president named their video as the winner of the scholarship, each of them receiving four equal checks for the scholarship prize.
Jack's jaw dropped as Baby hugged him fiercely while Flynn and Pascal high-fived. They all went up to shake hands with the president and the judges.
Jack smiled and couldn't wait to go home and show his parents. He had to hold back from rushing off too quickly due to everyone wanting pictures. When things at last calmed down he pulled Flynn aside and asked him to take a picture to send to Hiccup. Flynn smiled as Jack held up the giant check and gave a thumbs up to the camera with a cheeky grin. Flynn sent it to Hiccup and Jack couldn't wait for the response he was to receive.
Sure enough as he was grabbing his coat to head home he received a text all in caps; CONGRATULATIONS!
Jack smiled and sent back, I couldn't have done this without you. I love you so much.
He was a little surprised to receive the next text that read, Glad I could be a part of it…but I don't swing that way.
Jack was practically scratching his head when he received a picture of his boyfriend sleeping on some books at his desk with Tuffnutt giving Jack a thumbs up.
