Muggle Studies: Movies
For your Summer Assignment, please choose to visit one of the following:
Movie Theatre - a place where movies (motion pictures) are shown for entertainment.
Roller Rink – an area reserved for roller skating (shoes with wheels attached for gliding on hard surfaces)
Carnivals (fairs) - a traveling amusement show.
Once you have selected an activity, find an area close to you (locations listed on the back), and have fun! I will be expecting a 15 inch essay about your opinions about the Muggle activity you chose, and why (or why not) you like it.
See you in September,

"We've got to decide on a movie first, Peter," said Remus Lupin, grabbing his fair haired friend's arm before he slipped through the double doors.
The closest movie theatre to any of the boys was where Peter Pettigrew lived, in Cokeworth, England. So after making the appropriate arrangements with their parents (and lots of lying on Sirius' part) the Marauders found themselves in the shiny lobby of Sunshine's Movie Emporium.
"Right, right," said Peter Pettigrew, blushing in embarrassment. "I forgot."
"What about this one," called Sirius Black. He was standing in front of one the many movie posters decorating the walls. Remus and Peter came over to investigate. The poster pictured a man standing underneath a lamp post, in front of a house. "The Exorcist," said Sirius, reading the movie's title. "Let's watch that!"
After coming to a mutual agreement, they meandered their way up to the ticket booth occupied by a grumpy-looking teenager.
"Four tickets to The Exorcist, please," said Peter importantly.
The teenager raised a pierced eyebrow at him. "Four? There are only three of you."
They blinked, before realizing the attendant was right. James was not beside them like they had thought.
"There he is," said Remus, and jogged up to the bespectacled boy who was strolling away from the snack bar. James had four buckets of popcorn in a carrier, four drinks and plenty of candy.
"Muggles are genius," said James Potter, eating the popcorn with his mouth because his hands were busy. He ignored Remus' disapproving glance and followed him back to the ticket booth.
"…I can't even sell you these tickets," the attendant was saying as the Marauders were reunited. "You have to be 18 years or older to watch it."
"No fair!" said Sirius childishly, effectively destroying their chances at tricking the movie attendant into thinking that they were, in fact, 18 years or older.
"Well, what movies are we allowed to watch?"
"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," the attendant said, smirking. "I think that's more up your alley."
Peter smiled, "OK! Four tickets to that, then."
The attendant was taken aback at his blatant enthusiasm to watch a children's flick, but passed over the tickets instead.
"Bye!" they called after paying, and slipped through the double doors, leaving the movie attendant very bemused.
"Freaks," he muttered darkly, and turned grumpily to assist a customer who joined in line.
It took a few minutes for the teenagers to find a good place to sit (they finally decided on a row of seats at the back. It was in front of two people with movie catalogs covering their faces) but once they did, the Marauders got to take a good look at their surroundings:
Previews (as Remus had quietly explained what the 'weird Dark Magic images' were) were playing on the wall they were facing. Above them, in a tiny room, the previews were being projected by a film roll.
"I know I've said this a lot," said Sirius, stealing popcorn out of James' tub because he had already finished his. "But Muggles are brilliant!"
"Right?" agreed Peter, bouncing in his seat a little. "And these seats are very comfortable. You reckon we can take them home?"
A loud groan sounded from behind them. "Of all the days, why did they decide to come today? And here, too!" The voice belonged to a female. It sounded familiar. Extremely familiar.
James must've thought so too, because he turned around with a delighted expression on his face. "Evans! I didn't see you th -…Snape?" James' lip curled when he spotted her sallow companion. "What are you doing here? Why are you with Evans?"
The two suspects, whose faces had been obscured by the movie catalogs before, were indeed Lily Evans and Severus Snape, their classmate – and number one enemy.
"Why I'm here is none of your concern, Potter," said Snape with a sneer of his own.
Sirius, who couldn't help but join in, said, "Why, Snivellus, I'd have never expected you, of all people, to be watching Willy Wonkers and the Chocolate Frog Machine."
"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," corrected Remus.
"And I'd never expected you, of all people, to be watching something so - I don't know - Muggle.I thought it was beneath you and your 'views'. Why, I wonder what your friends would say if we tell them what you've been up to this summer, don't you, Prongs?"
"I do, indeed, Padfoot."
Evans placed a hand on Snape's arm, who was in the process of digging into his pocket for his wand, and hissed at the Marauders. "Oh, shove off! You idiots bug us constantly during school and now you have to annoy us during our summer vacation, too? Get a life!"
Before a rebuttal could be made, the theatre lights dimmed, and the movie began to play. The Marauders were left with no choice but to turn around and enjoy the show. It was their summer homework, after all, and they couldn't let Evans and Snape make them lose concentration. Besides, there was always a chance of getting even after the movie.
The movie started with a bang. By the time Charlie and his family's financial issues were explained, Peter was already bawling. Remus was making furious notes into his notepad, no doubt going to infer to them while doing his essay. James and Sirius were dividing their time with watching the movie and tossing Peter's M&M's (he was too busy crying into a handkerchief to notice) at an old lady's flamboyant wig.
But this all change once the Oompa Loompas came on.
Sirius and James ceased with their M&M's hurtling and straightened up in their seats, and watched, with fascination, as the short, orange creatures danced on screen. The Oompa Loompas' shrill singing filled the theatre, and at that moment, they were reminded sorely of the House Elves in the kitchens.
"You thinking what I'm thinking?" hissed James to Sirius.
"Dressing the House Elves like those creatures and sneaking them into the Slytherin Common Room to do a dance number?"
"I knew you were my best friend for a reason."
Together, they cackled. "Mwhahahaha!"
A snort sounded from behind them, and at first, the Marauders thought it was Evans being prissy again, but an all too familiar voice drawled right after: "Hmm…fat, short and ugly. I wonder who those disgusting animals remind me of. Oh, hello, Pettigrew. Didn't see you there."
Peter slunk low in his seat at the diss, the tips of his ears reddening. Remus just about ripped his notebook in half, and was about to make an angry retort when James beat him to it, slamming his half-filled popcorn bucket over Snivellus' head.
"There," said James, dusting his hands off smugly. "If your hair wasn't greasy before this – which I highly doubt – then now it is! Just the way you like it, Snivellus. You're welcome!"
A beam of hot light hit the back of James' neck, and he whipped around, but was instantly blinded.
"You four are getting a lot of complaints from other movie-goers," said the snooty voice behind the flash light. "I'm going to have ask you to follow me, so other people could watch the movie in peace."
"Sure," said James, partly because the Oompa Loompa scene was over and the movie was starting to lag, and partly because he wanted to jet before Snivellus could get revenge (they were sitting in front of him, after all. He could easily catch them off-guard.) "If I could just see where I'm going."
The light was lifted, and James blinked to get the spots out of his eyes as he was dragged by the movie attendant down the steps. He made extra sure to say farewell to Snape with two fingers raised cheerfully in the air as his friends trailed behind him, doing nothing to cover their laughs.
As they were hustled towards the exit, the entire theatre stood up gave a standing ovation, extremely pleased that they were not going to be in the presence of hoodlums anymore.
Remus, upset that he was getting kicked out, and stressed because he had left his notebook in his seat, cupped his hands around his mouth to shout: "AT THE END OF THE FILM, THE PRIZE WILLY WONKA GIVES CHARLIE IS THE FACTORY ITSELF! HA-HA!"
The theatre was silent, then:
"BOOOOOO!"
"What'd he say? What'd he say?"
"Stupid nerd!"
A fist fight between two mothers broke out, and popcorn tubs were thrown at the screen. The Marauders were tossed out before they could view anymore.
"Well," said Peter, picking out popcorn from his hair. "That was a disaster."
Sirius shrugged. "At least we got to get back at Snivellus. Did you see his face when James whacked him with the poppycorn? Hilarious!"
James was modest. "Ahh, it was nothing."
"Well, your 'nothing' cost us the movie," said Remus with a huff.
"So? You could tell us what happened. It seemed like you know a lot about it from what you shouted at those tossers. Fantastic job, by the way," said Peter. "You've got great projecting skills."
Remus was pleased at the compliment, but shook his head. "I was lying. I only read the book. The movies are not always like the book, you know, so they could've made a different ending."
Sirius rocked on his heels. They were in the lobby of the theatre now. The rude movie attendant manning the booth was on a lunch break, so they were alone. "We didn't watch enough of the movie to do our report," he said. "And we obviously can't go back to finish it. But we also can't leave until we see something, right?"
"So…"
"What do you say we sneak in to see The Exorcist?"
"I say," said James, slinging an arm around Sirius' shoulders as Remus and Peter exchanged mischievous smiles. "Lead the way!"
