I don't own Austin & Ally
"There's a possibility she has what we call Supraventricular Tachycardia", Linda said slowly. I looked over to Ally, not knowing what that was, only to see my wife's face was pale as a ghost. Okay, now I'm scared.
"Ally…what is it?", I asked putting a hand on her very stiff shoulder.
"D-Did you s-say…Tachycardia?", Ally stuttered. Linda nodded.
"What is that?", I asked confused.
"A heart disease", Ally choked out then broke down in sobs. I just held her close to me, though I was in so much shock from that statement.
"Oh honey, please don't cry", Linda sat patting Ally's back as she cried in my chest. Lord help us now. "I promise you it's not that bad, and we don't even know if she has it yet"
"How will you know?", I asked hoarsely. I'm trying to stay strong for Ally.
"Well, with children this young, mostly it's hereditary-"
"You mean someone in our family could have it too and passed it down to her?", I asked cutting her off.
"Yes, that could be. We'll need to test all blood relatives known in order to tell if she really does have it. It's hard to tell with babies because their heart rates are usually a little faster than normal anyway", Linda explained. "And from what I've been told, I'm assuming we don't have to test Ella?"
"N-No, we d-do", Ally stuttered as she sat up a little. Linda looked confused at this.
"She'd be their biological cousin", I informed her. Linda nodded in understanding. I guess she and Dr. Murphy don't know everything about us like we thought. Oops.
"Okay, well then we'll need all blood relatives of you Austin, and of Ally. I know some of those relatives are imprisoned at the moment, but if all of you come up negative we will be able to test them as well. If no one in the family that we know of has it, that's fine too. We can wait until Emma's older to have the tests and just take the necessary precautions for someone who might have the problem", she said. I just nodded, still not really understanding any of this though.
A few hours later
"We have the test results", Linda said with a sad smile as she looked at every family member in the room. Everyone had shown up, even if they weren't related to us by blood. They all wanted to be there for us.
"What does it say?", Ella demanded as I held her closer to me. Ally was holding Emma and Mom was holding Evan. Ally said Emma needed to be comforted in a time like this, but not to make Evan and Ella jealous. I didn't think newborns could get jealous, but whatever…
"Well, we're pretty sure Emma does have S.V.T.-", she started, but was cut off by Ally letting out a sob and Maddie taking the baby from her arms as Trish hugged her. I hugged Ella tighter because she seemed to be about to lose it as well. "-because someone else in this room has it as well"
"Just spit it out Doc", Trish snapped. She loves Linda as much as we do, but her temper is shot today…and every day.
"We are almost certain Emma has it, and…Ella does too", she said making me heart stop. Both my daughters have a heart problem!?
"WHAT!?", came a small, but very loud, voice from in my lap. "You mean I-I'm the one that g-gave my l-little sister a heart p-problem!?"
"No, baby someone would've had to have given it to you first-", Linda tried to explain, but Ella just wouldn't have it.
"But I was the one that gave it to her! I can't believe this!", Ella cried as she literally ran out of the room before any of us could stop her.
"Ella, wait!", Toby yelled and ran after her.
"Toby!", Aunt Claire yelled, but Kelsey and Alyssa stopped her.
"We'll get 'em Mom", Kelsey said as the two girls ran out as well. I would run after them too, but I think the girls can handle Ella and Toby for now. Right now Ally needs me.
Third Person POV
Ella ran through the halls as fast as her small legs would carry her. She didn't know what it meant to have a heart problem; she only knew that she was the cause of her little sister having it too.
"Ella!", she heard her best friend yelling from not too far behind her. That just made her run even faster. The next corner she past, Ella quickly hid while Toby and his sisters past by. She let out a sigh of relief, having gotten quite tired of running for some reason, and she walked in the nearest empty room she had found and curled herself up in the corner letting all the tears finally fall. She knew she probably wasn't supposed to feel tired when she ran, but she thought it might just be because she ran too much or was only six; not that she had a heart problem. Letting that thought sink in, Ella started crying even harder.
Meanwhile, Toby had broken into record speed of a six year old running, and had already lost his older sisters a while back. "Ella!", he yelled getting more worried by the second. He's seen his best friend upset before, but never this much. Toby just wanted her to smile again and stop crying. She needed to stop blaming herself for something that was not her fault. He was passing a hallway he'd been down three times already when he heard a small whimper that caught his attention. Toby quietly opened the door, in case it was a patient rather than who he was truly hoping to see, and was relieved to see Ella sitting there in the corner of the room. Though, he was pretty sad to see Ella balling her eyes out in her knees.
"Ella!", Toby exclaimed as he rushed to his best friend's side, hugging her close to him as she cried harder. "Please stop crying", he whispered closing his eyes. Toby didn't know why it hurt so much to see her cry; he just knew he wanted to make it stop.
"T-Toby, it's all m-my f-fault!", Ella exclaimed. She was crying very hard and Toby couldn't stand it.
"Ella, you gotta quit crying. It's not your fault that you and Emma have a heart problem that no one can even say", Toby told her gently. "Mrs. Linda said you had to get it from someone else, so it really wasn't you who gave it to Emma. And think about it this way, besides the stuff with your birth family, hasn't your life been okay so far?"
"Y-Yeah", Ella stuttered as she looked up a little. Toby smiled, realizing he must be getting somewhere with this conversation.
"And did you not see that cute little smile on Emma's face before we even found out about this?", he asked. Ella nodded. "She was happy, and not in any pain at all. She's always had the heart problem though, so that lets you know it doesn't even bother her. Have you ever really sat there and thought 'Oh, my heart feels funny'?"
"Not really, but it does beat fast when I run", Ella said.
"Well, is that much of a problem?", Toby asked. Ella thought for a second before shaking her head.
"No, I just sit down for a few minutes and it's fine", Ella said.
"Then do you think it'll bother Emma, a baby girl who can't even walk?", Toby asked pointedly.
"I guess not", Ella said smiling a little. "Thanks Toby, you're the best friend ever!", Ella said wrapping her small arms around his neck.
"You're my best friend too Ella", Toby said as he wrapped his arms around Ella's waist. That's when Alyssa and Kelsey finally caught up with their little brother, but stopped in their tracks seeing the position he and Ella were in. They were both pretty much standing on their knees, Toby's arms around Ella's waist and her arms wrapped around his neck. Neither of them had their eyes open, and both were smiling.
"Awe! Take a picture, hurry!", Alyssa whispered. Kelsey quickly got her phone and took a picture of the pair and sent it to everyone upstairs who was clearly worried about the two.
Ally's POV
Right when Ella ran out of the room, my heart cracked. She's in such pain, and it isn't from her newfound heart problem. I looked over to Maddie who was cradling my other baby girl in her arms, but it looked like she was about to cry herself.
"Maddie, can I hold her please?", Austin asked, apparently seeing this too. Maddie nodded and quickly handed Emma to her Daddy before sprinting out the door.
"Crap, I got her", Porter said as he ran after her. Man, what is it with everyone running out crying and everyone else running after them?
"Ally, can I please explain everything you need to know about the heart problem your daughters have now?", Linda asked. I nodded silently as Austin sat down on the bed beside me while still holding our baby girl. Mimi had passed Trish Evan who had just fallen asleep.
"Please, go ahead Linda", Mimi said seeing I wasn't going to talk.
"Well, S.V.T. is not something that's potentially dangerous to your children. In fact, many people who have it live long, happy lives. Some would even say totally normal. They'll need to refrain from too much physical activity if they can help it, and it's best to stay away from chocolate and caffeine at all times", Linda informs us.
"What!? But Ella loves chocolate chip cookies", Austin said.
"Well honey that's fine. I just meant not something that's entirely chocolate like a brownie. And when her condition is under complete control, she may be able to have one of them in a day every once in a while. She's young though, so I wouldn't recommend it. I'd say stick with the basics; chocolate chips cookies and Oreos only. I think that's best. No soda, unless the label clearly says caffeine free. Drinks are what you should check most for that. If she wants tea or coffee, make sure it says caffeine free. Coffee cannot be an everyday thing though, because it still has about 3% caffeine in it. Tea on the other hand should be okay, but it can cause kidney stones in the future. Do you understand what I'm saying?", Linda asked. I sighed.
"It's a lot to take in, but I think I got it. Will you please get me a list of what they can or can't eat and drink? Oh, and Ella sometimes gets migraine headaches too if that has anything to do with it", I informed her.
"Her migraines shouldn't affect her heart problem, but she may get one if she's having a spell. I'll prescribe Ella a small dosage of Inderal LA, which is a medicine that can help her migraines and her heart. We may have to gradually increase it later on, but she's so young and small that she barely qualifies as able to take it now. For Emma, we'll just have to wait and see when she gets a bit older. Just follow the food and drink instructions with her", Linda said. I nodded making mental notes of all of this.
"Is that all?", Mimi asked. Linda nodded as she marked it on Emma's chart. I also heard her telling one of the nurses to get Dr. Murphy to put it on Ella's as well.
"Als, I think Ella's going to be fine", Austin said smiling next to me as he showed me a text he just got from Kelsey. It was another adorable picture of Ella and Toby hugging, and she had the cutest little smile on her face, as did Toby, and below the picture it said 'We'll be up in a bit but let's just say Toby calmed her right down ;)'. Awe!
"Oh that is just adorable", Mimi said getting the same text. She showed Trish and Dez on her phone since they couldn't reach their own. Trish was still holding Evan and Dez was holding Bri.
"We'll be just fine", I sigh finally able to truly breathe for the first time since Linda walked in the door hours ago.
Third Person POV
Porter ran all the way outside the entrance/exit doors of the hospital where he finally came to a stop upon seeing Maddie sitting against the brick wall by the doors. "Maddie, are you okay?", he asked stupidly. He knew she wasn't okay, but what kind of guy would he be if he didn't at least ask?
"Why them?", she asked with tears in her eyes. Porter knelt down beside her and put his arm loosely around her shoulders.
"Why them what?", Porter asked softly as she leaned into his chest.
"Why couldn't it be me with the heart problem? Ella's been through so much already, and Emma's just a little baby. She was born less than two whole days ago Porter! And Ella may act mature, but she's only six. The poor babies shouldn't have to go through this", Maddie cried. Porter just hugged her tighter.
"Maddie, I'm sure they'll be fine. You need to stop worrying so much about the future. Those two little girls are fighters. You saw how Emma pulled through when Ally was in labor and the odds were highly against her. And Ella, God bless her little heart, she's been kidnapped twice and seen more than any kid that age should see. Actually any person for that matter. There's nothing anyone can do about it though. We can't go back and change the past or change some health problem they were born with. Maddie, this isn't your fault any more than it is Ella's. I know she blamed herself because she had it before Emma, but it isn't her fault, and it certainly isn't yours either", Porter said as he lifted her chin so she'd meet his gaze. Porter's breath caught upon seeing how beautiful Maddie's dark brown eyes were that close to his face. She was clearly the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen before in his life, and that was saying something. Then his gaze fell down to her plump, pink lips that were just so inviting. Apparently she noticed this too, because Maddie subconsciously licked her lips as her eyes shifted from his eyes to his lips every few seconds. Less than two inches away from each other, Porter could smell her cherry flavored lip gloss and smiled a little. If only she knew just how hard it's been for him to resist kissing her every time he sees her since the day they met. Maddie let out the tiniest gasp known to man that only he would have ever been able to hear given their close position. Her eyes fluttered shut and Porter took that as an open invitation to close the annoying gap between them. Nothing had ever been more satisfying to him.
Maddie naturally melted into the kiss. This is what she's been wanting for months now. Wanting to feel his hot breath on her face; to feel his soft, warm lips on hers. Nothing had ever felt more magical in her life, and she finally felt the one thing she'd been missing growing up…love. And to think, all those years he was living right under her nose, being manipulated by the people who raised her in order to protect his little sister and give her a place to live where they would never be separated. Coincidently, she'd always been with her own brother; loved and cherished him, protecting him with everything she had, and never knew he was her full blooded little brother. But this….this just topped the charts. Her faith had kept her going. God had helped her survive a full eighteen years with people who constantly beat her. He helped her come to know her little brother, and be adopted by a wonderful family she could and always would call her own. He would help her family get through this problem they were now facing, just as, after all, he helped her find the man she could ultimately see herself spending the rest of her life with.
"Wow", Porter breathed out as they both pulled apart when the need for air became essential. Maddie couldn't speak. It was all she could do to force her eyes open, and she was blinking rapidly, her mouth never once closing. Porter noticed her rather perplexed expression, and automatically thought she regretted that kiss. Thoughts ran through his head. Maybe he rushed her into this. Maybe she didn't like him the way he liked her. Maybe it was just an 'in the heat of the moment' kiss for her. Maybe he scared her. That certainly wasn't helping him at the moment.
"Oh Maddie…I'm so sorry! Please don't be mad at me. I mean, I-I thought that's what you wanted. I thought-"
"Porter", Maddie said holding up a hand for him to stop talking once she was finally able to speak. "Don't say another word. Just…kiss me again"
"What do you-"
"Porter, please. I need you to kiss me again", she begged. Porter looked uncertain, but after searching her face to see she was completely serious, he broke into a wide grin and obliged. He cupped her face in his hands and brought her in for another passionate kiss. Yep, just as good as the first time. This…this they both could get used to. They pulled apart when Maddie got a text, Porter getting one a second later.
"Well would you look at the", Porter said smiling as he looked up to Maddie. A new…light of love shone through her eyes. "Looks like love is in the air today"
"Does that mean we're together?", Maddie asked in a rather small voice. Porter smiled.
"If you accept the offer to be mine", Porter said holding out his arms. Maddie nodded and willingly stepped into her new boyfriend's warm embrace.
"I've always loved you", she whispered quietly, hoping that wouldn't totally ruin things. Porter smiled down at her.
"I've always loved you too"
So I ended this chapter on a bit of a happier note. What'd you guys think? And I also wanted to go into a bit more detail with Maddie and Porter's big kiss scene. Who liked that? I tried to update a bit faster just for you guys, because I know some of you were confused about what S.V.T. (Supraventricular Tachycardia) was. Now that I explained all of that, are you guys a little more at ease about it? I know how much medical dos and don'ts I put in there seems like a lot, but trust me, I've had this heart problem since I was four and I know it is not that bad. A small pill twice a day, and I didn't even have that until a few years ago. It helps a lot, but I really don't know if a six year old could take it. I know when I was six I had to wear a heart monitor, which is also not as bad as it sounds. I sear, no pain, no needles. Unless you count taking an adhesive strip off your skin as pain, that's it. That's also how they found out I had it I think. So thank you for all of you who were worried, but there's nothing to worry about. I love you all so much! Please read, review, follow, and favorite! :)
I don't own Inderal LA, but it is a real drug for heart and headache sufferers.
God bless you all!
