Chapter 14: Chaos Unfiltered (Part 1)

There is such a fine line between life and death, sometimes we don't really know what side we're on.

The computer system jumped to life in the dead air. "Movement detected." It read in bold, blinking red letters. Pan rushed to see what the alert was, and rushed back to her parents.

"Momma, Papa, something's happened."

Toshiro remembered seeing the same setting for Pan's nightmare somewhere. So one week before, he had scoped out the Northern mountains and set a very discreet, but powerful bug at the entrance to a deep cave.

No really, it was a bug. A cicada shell that left no traces of chips, lights, or heat signatures.

*Flashback*

"Are you sure about this Toshiro?" Bulma asked, typing away at the controls.

For the millionth time, Toshiro slowed down to hear his grandmother. "What? Of course I am. This is the place, I just know it."

"Do you know emergency protocol?" The elder Briefs spoke again.

'Seriously?' "Yep. Kill the baddies and get the Hell out." Soon, his speed picked back up with the wind and zipped through the air. Shiro zoned out into his mind for only a few seconds. 'How exactly is this going to help us? Cicadas invade warmer places, not the...' His thoughts stopped dead as he looked inside of the cave. "Kami, what's going on in here?"

The walls in the cave were covered in cicadas, some shells, though mostly live. The noise they orchestrated so loudly, made the young Saiyans ears ring.

He planted the bug on a singular empty spot, and flew home without being noticed.

'I guess I'll get more data soon.'

*End Flashback*

The laptop that was connected to the bug transmitted more data than he had planned. "Capsule Corp. really outdid themselves." He said. Advanced statistics displayed across the screen, along with heat sensors. "Too bad I can't read all of it."

"Mai? Mai!" She heard someone say. The young woman lay barely awake in her bedroom at nine in the morning. "Mai!" The voice sounded feminine. Blue eyes cracked open, revealing the morning light. "If your Saiyan ass doesn't get up, so help me-"

Mai released a growl. "Grams stop. My head feeling like a ticking time bomb." She pulled the pillow over her eyes. Her head pulsed to the beat of her heart. 'What's going on? How can a headache feel this bad?'

Bulma rushed in at her granddaughter's blood curdling screams. "Vegeta!" She yelled, hoping he was still in the house. He was but a blur rushing up the stairs.

"What's happening, Onna?" He asked.

"I-I," she stuttered, "I don't know, bring her downstairs."

After a few hours and lots of sedation, the half-Sayian was calm, and mumbling in her sleep.

"Koji. Koji, you know that tickles." She smiled in her sleep as her grandparents watched from the computers. Vegeta cocked a brow at his mate as she only smiled.

*Flashback *

He was laughing at her. And she laughed back. They were happy, just the way they were. That was until he told her how secret.

"Ba- Mai. I think you should know something, about me," koji paused, taking a deep breath, "I'm not... Exactly... Human."

The laughter left the youth as a serious look overtook her. "What do you mean you're not human?"

It was there, in the small apartment he shared with his mother, that the secret was going to come out. Hours and hours of card games and jokes had finally prepared him for this. His mother smiled from the kitchen for support.

"M-my mother is Saiyan, and my father is- was human." He was quiet as his girlfriend processed it.

Blue eyes widened, and brimmed with unshed tears. "Why did you keep that from me? I told you everything." The nineteen year old said in the old language.

The ten sitting across from her looked confused, so his mother answered the question. "I'd be lying if I said it was for your health, but we did it by request."

'By request.' Her parents told them not to tell her. Her bangs fell over into her eyes as a silent tear fell. Koji followed her out without so much as a sound. Mai felt so many emotions in that moment. Happiness, anger, betrayal?

His front door creaked shut as they stepped onto the gravel. What seemed like natural light peaked through the small port windows. The two stood silently, looking at each other before Mai finally walked her way home.

'Now or never.' He thought pulling her back to him and musing her hard. It was passionate and loving. It was a kiss that screamed apology. Pulling away he whispered, "I've loved you since we were kids. And I'd never keep anything unless I was told."

He promised he would love her forever. 'We were so little, no child could picture eternity.' But here it was.

"I love you Koji." She said crying.

*End Flashback*

Beep. Beep. Beep. A heartbeat, her heartbeat. 'What happened?' Mai questioned, opening her eyes slowly. The med wings lights were turned down low, so they were not to shock her.

"Has anyone else ever told you that you talk in your sleep?" Vegeta asked from across the room.

"Oh it's you." Mai signed jokingly. "How long was I out for?"

"Long enough." He responded curtly. Bulma had passed out hours before in the chair at her desk. "Who was that boy you were rambling on about?"

She tried, and failed, to suppress a smile. "If you knew, you just might have an aneurysm."

xXxXxXx

"Momma, Papa. Something's happened."

"What do you mean, Pan?" Goku asked her while he ate a cookie ChiChi made.

"Th-the computers," the eighteen year old stuttered, "the computers are going off. An a-alarm, the light, and Kami there's something seriously wrong." Pan began rambling, her hands trembling in nervousness.

ChiChi looked up from the dishes to comfort her daughter. And pleaded for her to calm down as they tried to fine out what was happening.

Sure Saiyans can handle stress, but this was getting out of hand. "Calm down... for the baby."

'And just how do you expect me to do that?' Pan thought, sitting at the kitchen table. "Just look at the computers."

xXxXxXx

"Whatever it is, it sure is big." Bra looked at the screen, commenting to her future nephew.

"You're telling me. I put in a tracker last week... Cicadas only bother with warm place, right?" He sat next to her, messing with the keyboard.

"What are you getting at?" Asked Trunks walking in.

It was a calm day, the birds chirping and sun shining. If it weren't for the computers going off, one might've mistaken it for a false alarm.

"You might want to call mom." Toshiro smiled, earning a look from his future son.

xXxXxXx

Pan was more confused than as her older brother looked at the heat signatures. "It's nothing, Pan."

She frowned. "That's the sensor Shiro used, and he said it was abnormally warm. Are you calling my son a lair?" Gohan winced at the glare in which his sister gave. It was amazing how much she had changed in only a few short years. Her stubbornness had only gotten worse with age.

"Not a chance. All I'm saying, is that I don't see any- What the Hell!?" Gohan looked though the computer program as thousands of viruses took over. They ate away at the system until the laptop showed a camera feed of the inside of a cave.

"Guys!" Pan screamed through the small home. "We've got a problem!" Looking back at the computer as the video continued to play.

The dirt compacted walls between to move apart, showing an aircraft hangar. "Where the fuck can anyone hide an aircraft in a cave?" Gohan cursed, causing his sister to laugh.

Her onyx eyes widened as she looked closely at the screen.

"We need to call Capsule Corp. now, l-like right now." She said, rushing for her cell phone.

Goten peaked around the corner of the hallway. "What's going on?"

"Long story little bro." Gohan said, leaving to get Videl. After he left, curiosity killed the younger Son as he looked closely at the computer screen.

"Oh shit."

xXxXxXx

Mai scrambled for her capsules, trying not the freak out. "She's looking for her handy dandy file." She heard Shiro tell the Sons upon their entrance. The woman tore up the living areas of Capsule Corp. looking for capsule twenty-five.

"You can stop with the Blues Clues references anytime Shiro-Chan." She frowned, dumping a basket of pens and pencils. 'Bingo.'

"Hey," He whined like a child, "I told you not to call me that."

ChiChi laughed as the capsule popped open. She watched as her granddaughter mapped out the trail of the disaster on the office floor. "Picture." Mai held out her hand as it was placed. She reviewed every possible detail until she was sure.

"Grams, they got that damn plane again!" she hollered through the halls, trying to get her attention. Goku sighed, knowing from there on out, their job was not going to be easy.

Little Takara looked out at her cousin, "is that bad?" the twenty-three year old looked back down at her round face and nodded.
