Chapter 69
Kate woke up to the sound of the heart monitor. She looked around. Nobody was in the room but her. She frowned.
Suddenly, a knock was heard. Tony came in.
Her face lit up.
„Good morning"Tony greeted as he sat by her.
She noticed his hair was messy. He seemed tired.
„Were you sleeping in the hospital? " Kate asked. She quickly covered her mouth in shock. Tony's pupils dilated.
„You can talk normally? " Tony excitedly wondered. She nodded.
„Yeah, I think so"She said, not believing herself this was happening. Tony jumped out of his chair and hugged her. Kate felt awkward. Tony removed himself from her.
„Um, sorry"He said with red color appearing on his face. Kate giggled.
„No problem "She said. Someone came into the room.
It was Abby.
"KATE!" She yelled frantically as she jumped on Kate, hopefully not breaking her bones.
"Abby" Kate barely said because of Abby's hard squeeze. Abby got up.
"Sorry, but I missed you so much! And Gibbs and Tony told me everything! And I couldn't work without you, or live" Abby said in a breath. Kate watched her, in amusement.
"Oh, wow. Thanks, Abs" Kate said. Abby squealed.
"I'm so happy!" She started jumping around the room. Tony and Kate laughed.
"Hey, where's Tim?"Kate asked. Abby motioned to the door.
"He's out there. So are Gibbs, Ducky, Jimmy, Jenny, Gerald and, Ziva" Abby said. She noticed Kate had a confused look on her face, after Abby mentioned Ziva.
"Um, who's Ziva?" Kate asked confusedly. Tony looked at Abby.
"Oh, uh, no one" Abby said. Silence overruled the room.
"I'll be going now" Abby said as she slowly came out of the room. Kate looked at Tony questionably.
"Will you tell me?" Kate asked. Tony glared at her.
"She's just a friend of Abby's" Tony quickly said. Kate tilted her head.
"Um, I don't remember Abby telling me anything about a girl called Ziva" Kate said.
"That's because they became friends while you were in coma" Tony continued. Kate slowly nodded, knowing Tony was lying.
In the waiting room…
"So, you're from Mossad?" A guy asked Ziva. They've been talking since last night.
"Yeah. I can't believe I told you that" Ziva said, looking embarrassed. He chuckled.
"It's okay. Your secret is safe with me" He assured her. She laughed.
"Well, okay. What's your name again?" She asked.
"Oh, it's Gerald" He said. She nodded.
"Aren't you the guy who was working for Doctor Mallard, from NCIS?" She asked.
"Yeah, how did you know?" Gerald replied. She shrugged.
"I had the chance to meet them all" She said. She looked behind Gerald, where the entire NCIS team was, talking. Everyone expect Tony and Kate. She sighed.
"Hey, you free tonight?" Gerald suddenly asked. Ziva was in slight shock. Her feelings were still mixed up, but she couldn't let herself not have fun.
"Um, okay" She said. He smiled.
"Restaurant around the corner tonight?" He questioned. She raised her eyebrow.
"Wow, that's fancy, Gerald. You really have that much money?" She said teasingly.
"Hey, are you going or not?" He smirked. She nodded.
"Let's call it a date" She replied. He grinned.
"Great. See you at eight?" He inquired. She shrugged.
"Works for me" Ziva said. He laughed as he got up.
She watched as he went away. He joined the conversation that the NCIS team had.
At Kate's ordination…
"When can I leave?" Kate asked the doctor.
"You'll be let out of the hospital tomorrow" The doctor said. Kate groaned.
"But I want to leave now!" She said aggressively.
"Miss Todd, I will have to ask you to calm your nerves down, or you'll spend much more time in this hospital" The doctor nearly hissed. Kate bowed her head.
"You could leave today, but I'm afraid you'll have to use wheelchair" She said. Kate quickly raised her head. Tony got up from his chair.
"She'll use what?" Tony asked. Kate looked at him.
"Caitlin cannot walk yet" The doctor shook her head.
"But, I know how to walk!" Kate said. The doctor laughed.
"I meant, you don't have the strength to walk yet" She said. Kate smirked.
"Watch me" Kate said. Tony held in his laugh as Kate got up. The doctor gaped.
Kate got up from her bed. As soon as she was out of the bed, with her feet on the ground, she lost her balance.
She almost fell on the cold floor, but hopefully, Tony was behind her, so he could catch her.
"Thanks" She said panicky. Tony lifted her on the bed.
"I hope you saw my point" The doctor sarcastically said. Tony looked at the doctor, rather pissed off.
"We'll take the wheelchair" Tony said. The doctor came out of the room. Kate glared at Tony.
"I'm sorry" She said shamefully.
"Sorry for what?" Tony asked. He saw tears rolling down her cheeks.
"I can't do a thing right" She said through sobs. Tony shook his head.
"Nobody said that. It's normal for you to lose your balance" Tony calmed her down. Her crying got quiet.
"Okay" She said. He wiped her tears off. The doctor came in again, this time, holding a wheelchair.
"There you go" She said as she handed them to Tony. She looked at Kate.
"Is everything alright in here?" She asked. Kate and Tony quickly nodded.
"Yup" They said in unison. The doctor sighed and came out of the room again. Tony looked at Kate. They both laughed a bit.
"So, you wanna ride?" Tony said temptingly. Kate chuckled.
"It's on" She said. He took her with both of his hands and put her in the wheelchair. He turned her to the door.
"Ready?" He asked.
"I was born ready" She said.
"Well, I don't know, Kate" Tony said jokingly. She moaned.
"Just drive" She ordered. He opened the door and ran with the wheelchair. They were in the hall now. People watched them; some even tried to stop them. Gibbs looked at them. He couldn't help but laugh first. Kate's doctor ran up to them, with her face red.
"What happened?" She asked in panic. They shrugged.
"You gave them the power, doctor" Jenny said. The doctor rolled her eyes and ran down the hall after them.
"Wait!" She yelled.
"Tony and Kate already entered the elevator. Kate couldn't stop laughing.
"That was so fun" Tony said.
"Ya' think, DiNozzo?" Kate said jokingly. The door swung open. They got out and ran down the next hall.
Finally, Tony and Kate were at the reception.
"We would like to check out" Tony said, breathing heavily. The receptionist looked at them.
"Names?" She asked.
"Kate Todd" Kate said. The woman scrolled down with her mouse in the computer's database.
"Yeah, you can go" She said, in complete boredom. They ran straight through the hospital door.
Tony searched for his car keys in his pocket, while Kate laughed. Tony finally found the keys. He unlocked the car and put Kate on the seat next to Tony's.
"Thanks" She said. Tony smiled. He started the engine.
"So, where do you want to go?" Tony asked.
"Ooh, I want to see Dwayne! I miss him so much" Kate said, smiling at the memory of her boyfriend. Tony fought the urge to roll his eyes.
"Okay" Tony said. Kate turned on the radio, while Tony drove off the hospital's parking.
'Only a week left until Christmas! Parents, be ready for your kids and their gifts! Santa's calling!' A narrator on the radio said. Kate laughed.
"Wow, it's already Christmas. I'm glad I woke up" Kate said. Tony smiled.
…
Tony parked the car in front of Dwayne's house. He got out of the car to help Kate.
Somehow, Kate managed to stay on her feet.
"Oh My God, Tony! I can walk!" She squealed. Tony's mouth dropped.
"Kate, that's great!" He hugged her again, but quickly pulled away.
"What is it?" She asked. He shook his head.
"Nothing. It's just that everything's happening so fast" Tony said. She shrugged.
"Maybe I could have walked before, but it was just a shock, right?" She said. He smiled.
"Yeah, maybe" He said.
"You'll wait for me outside of his apartment, okay?" She questioned. He nodded.
"Sure. You won't take long, right?" He replied. She chuckled.
"No. Just want to say hi. After all, he is my boyfriend, Tony" She said. Tony sighed.
"Yeah" He said. She turned around and entered the building. Tony followed her.
They climbed the stairs to Dwayne's apartment. Kate ringed the bell, while Tony stood next to the door. She waved to Tony.
Tony moved further. A newspaper on the floor interested him. He picked it up and started reading.
Kate ringed again. No response.
"Dwayne? It's Kate, honey!" She yelled. Still no response. She looked at the doorknob. The door was already open.
"Well that's strange" Kate muttered. She heard muffled sounds from the apartment. It didn't remind of talking.
Kate decided to come in.
"Dwayne?" She yelled through the room. The sound was growing louder. She figured it was coming from his bedroom. She came into the bedroom, regretting every second of the moment she entered his house at first place.
Her boyfriend was on his king-sized bed, making out with a blonde girl, who was wearing his shirt. Kate covered her mouth in shock.
Dwayne's eyes accidentally opened, meeting Kate's. He immediately pushed the girl off.
"Kate! What are you doing here?" He exclaimed. The girl looked panicked.
A tear rolled down Kate's cheek.
"I can't believe this" She whispered. She started sobbing. Dwayne quickly got up. Kate noticed he had only boxers and a shirt on.
"Babe, let me explain…" He said quietly. She stopped sobbing.
"No! There's nothing to explain!" She yelled. He rolled his eyes.
"Look, I'm sorry…" He continued.
"Oh, and, now you're sorry? Will a single sorry take all this back?" She said through tears. He just glared in silence.
"Will it?" She continued. He stayed silent.
"I was such an idiot!" She slid down to the floor.
"Katie, honey" He tried to soothe her, but seemed only to piss her off.
"I should have known! A lawyer, mommy's son, perfect guy, caring, beautiful… You're nothing!" She raised her voice. The girl quickly got up and tried to go away.
"You're not going anywhere!" Kate yelled to her. The girl turned around.
"What's your name?" She asked. The girl trembled.
"Tell me!" Kate yelled. The girl shivered.
"Clarissa" She quickly said. Kate covered her mouth again.
"Your personal trainer, huh?" Kate turned back to Dwayne.
"Clarissa, go" Dwayne said to her. Clarissa ran away in panic.
"How could you, Dwayne? I thought you loved me…" Kate buried her head in her hands.
"I do" He said.
"Liar. And this is how you show it? Cheating on me?" She stood up angrily. He came out of the room. He sat on the couch in the living room.
"She started it!" Dwayne yelled accusingly. Clarissa was out of the apartment already.
"Oh, yeah. Blame the women. Yeah, she is guilty, but you joined her! You did it with her!" She yelled.
"I'm sorry, okay?" Dwayne yelled. Kate shook her head.
"I was in coma! I could have died! And you? Did you even visit the hospital? Did you think of me?" Kate said quietly. Dwayne sighed, pinching his nose bridge.
"I was busy, okay?" He said.
"No! You weren't busy! You didn't give a damn!" Kate cried. He got up angrily.
"I had work!" He yelled back.
"So did my friends! But they all came to visit me! Because they cared!" She yelled.
"You think I care about them?" Dwayne exclaimed. Another tear stroke Kate's cheek.
"So you never cared about me! You took advantage of me!" She yelled. She turned around to leave, but Dwayne reached her arm. He gripped it hard.
"Let me go!" Kate yelled as she sobbed once more. Dwayne glared angrily.
"How can you underestimate me like that?" He yelled.
Kate couldn't handle the pressure. So much stress.
Tony could have sworn he heard shouting. He got closer to Dwayne's apartment. The yelling got louder. Tony's senses were alarmed. He came into the apartment.
Kate kicked Dwayne in the groin as she tried to run way. She found herself in the kitchen. After a small pause, Dwayne ran after her.
"You're crazy!" He yelled. Kate cried.
"Stay away from me!" She yelled. A knife was nearby. She hesitated, but grabbed it.
Tony got in the house and went into the kitchen. He stood in shock as he watched Dwayne and Kate wrestle. He quickly took his gun from its holster and pointed it at Dwayne.
"NCIS! Let her go!" Tony yelled. Dwayne was holding a knife on Kate's throat. Dwayne looked angrily at Tony, but dropped the knife.
Tony lowered his gun. Kate coughed a bit. She ran into Tony's arms. Tony hugged her back, glad she was still alive. Dwayne wanted to run away, but Tony was faster. He quickly let of Kate and ran after Dwayne.
Tony caught Dwayne and handcuffed him.
"You are under arrest for physical assault and attempt of murder. You have a right to remain silent. Everything you say or do may be used against you in court of law. You have a full right of an attorney. If you don't have one, we'll appoint you an attorney. Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you?" Tony recited the Miranda warning to Dwayne.
"Yeah" Dwayne replied.
"It's yes for you" Tony hissed as he gripped the handcuffs harder on Dwayne's hands, making him squeal.
As he let go of Dwayne, he called Gibbs.
"Hey, boss. I'm with Kate. I need some back up here"
'What? Is Kate okay?'
"Yeah, she's fine. Her boyfriend had a nervous breakdown and tried to kill her" Tony said casually.
'Oh, God. I'm sending two policemen there ASAP'
"Thanks. See you later" Tony hung up. He turned to Dwayne.
"Your police ride will be here in a minute" Tony said. Dwayne rolled his eyes grumpily.
Kate still couldn't believe what happened. It all happened so fast. Never had she thought Dwayne would turn out to have a darker side.
Police sirens were heard. Tony looked out of the window. Two police cars showed up.
"Wow, Gibbs is fast" Tony said with a smile. He took Dwayne by his arms and led him down the hall.
"We'll take it from here now" A policeman said to Tony.
"Yeah, okay" Tony said as he handed Dwayne over.
"You read him the rights?" Another police officer asked a he shut the door of the car.
"Yeah. Watch out, he's a lawyer" Tony said. They chuckled.
"No problem" They said. They both got in the car and drove off. Tony turned around, where Kate was, facing him.
"Let's take you home" Tony said as he motioned to his car. She nodded silently.
They both sat in the car. Tony drove off the parking lot as he turned on the radio.
'And now, a song for the heartbroken' the radio narrator said. Kate let out a tear drop.
Slipped Away by Avril Lavigne played.
Tony wanted Kate to be happy and to rest after the coma experience, but instead, she got this drama. She buried her head in her hands as the song played.
'And I remember it clearly,

Won't be the same'
Tony parked in front of Kate's house. The song finished. Kate sobbed. Tony put his hand on her shoulder.
"Kate, he's not worth this" Tony said. She nodded.
"I know. I still can't believe it" She said. Tony sighed. He hated Dwayne from the bottom of his soul right now.
"Let's go in" She said after she stopped sobbing. Tony got out of the car.
He locked the car doors. They both got in the house.
Kate breathed in the air from her house. She hasn't been in here forever. It felt eerie.
"Let's watch a movie" Tony said as he sat on her couch. Kate shrugged.
"We can watch a show" Kate said as she sat by him.
"Like what?" Tony questioned.
"As far as I know, 'Bones' marathon is on" Kate said. Tony smiled.
"It's a deal" He said. She turned on the TV.
One episode of Bones later…
What time is it?" Kate asked as she stretched.
"It's seven" Tony said.
"Want to grab something to eat?" He asked. She scratched her head.
"Sure" She said.
"I know a great restaurant" Tony said. She smiled as she got up. She put her coat on. Tony did the same.
…
They sat in the car. Silence was killing them.
"So, are you going to testify in the court or what?" Tony asked. Kate looked intently at him.
"Honestly, I don't know. I don't want to trigger memories" She said as she popped on her elbow. Tony nodded.
"Okay"
Tony finally parked the car. They both got out of the car. They entered the restaurant.
They took their seats. Kate ordered a glass of water and a burger. Tony copied her order.
Gerald and Ziva…
Ziva entered the restaurant. She saw Gerald waving to her. She smiled as she approached their table.
"Hey" He said shyly. She smiled.
"Hey" She said as she sat across him. Suddenly, she froze. She saw a familiar face.
Tony.
"Is everything okay?" Gerald asked. She nodded quickly.
"Yeah, everything's fine" She assured him. Gerald ordered their food.
Ziva looked at the stage in the restaurant. A woman finished singing. A man stepped on the stage.
"Would anyone like to perform next?" He asked. Ziva lifted her hand.
"We have a contestant" He said. Ziva climbed on the stage, with her long violet dress dragging on the floor.
"What's your name, may I know?" He asked.
"Ziva David" She said into the microphone.
Tony and Kate…
Tony choked on his water after he heard the name. He looked above Kate's head, where Ziva was singing on the stage. Kate turned around.
"Is that the Ziva Abby was talking about?" Kate asked.
"Um, kind of" Tony said.
