Chapter 27: Sydney.
"Are you really okay with this Sydney?" Sora asked in a whispered tone as we walked up towards the glass building.
"I'm fine." I said, as I picture the blood coming out of Peter's arm. It really didn't bother me when it happened but now that time has passed, I can't help be feel terrible and wrong for it.
"Sydney, I know you by now. You are not fine." Roxas said as he tried to grab hold of my arm. I moved my arm away and moved forward a bit.
"I am fine. Leave me alone. " I said as I slightly moved my way through our little group towards were Tris was. She had already taken out the guards and was deciding who was to stay behind.
"I think you and Marcus should stay here with him." Tris told Caleb as she jerked her head towards Peter.
"I can't stay here while you go up there and risk your life." Caleb said.
"Don't worry about her Caleb. I'll be going up there as well. I'll protect her for you." I told him with a small smile on my face. He eventually nodded once he was sure that I wasn't lying about protecting Tris.
"Do you mind watching over Sora and Roxas?" I asked as Tris walked towards one of the fallen guards.
"Not at all, but why wouldn't they go with you?" he asked.
"They are too worried about me. If they go up there, they will be killed and I can't have that happen." I said as my gaze fell onto the two. The two of them were standing in a small patch of light, discussing something, probably my well-being. I smiled at Caleb before moving towards the elevators with Tris and her father. Once the doors closed, Tris leaned the side of her head against the glass.
"Thank you. For protecting Caleb," Her father started to say. "Beatrice, I-"
The elevator reached the eighth floor and the doors opened. Two guards were standing there ready with guns in their hands. Tris and I dropped down to the floor as the shots went off. I could hear bullets strike glass. The guards slumped to the ground, one was alive and groaning while the other was fading fast. Tris' father stood above them, his gun still held out from his body.
Guards were running down the left hallway as Tris and I stumbled to our feet. Tris' father jumped out of the elevator and sprinted down the right hallway, drawing the Dauntless guards after him. Out of the corner of my eye I could see Tris clapping her hand over her mouth to keep her screams in. As Tris watched her father die, I made my way down the left hallway, towards the only door ahead.
The opposite wall from the door was made up completely of screens; each was a foot tall and a foot wide. There were dozens of them, each one showing a different part of the city. There was one screen that had lines of code on it instead of an image. It breezes past faster than I could read. It had to be the simulation, the code already compiled, a complicated list of commands that anticipate and address a thousand different outcomes. Sitting in a chair and desk, was a Dauntless soldier.
"Four." I said as I raised my gun towards him.
"Drop your weapon." He said. I didn't move when he gave his command so her repeated it.
"No, I will not drop my weapon. Not until Tris comes in here." I said. I could feel my arms become shaky as I held my gun up at him. It took him a second to bring his gun out and fire it. The gun in my hand flew out of my hand, blood running down my fingers.
"Tobias." Tris said and my head turned towards the door where Tris was standing.
"Drop your weapon." He said as he turned his head towards the door.
"Tobias, you're in a simulation." Tris said.
"Drop your weapon, or I'll fire." He repeated. Tris lowered her body down and placed her gun down on the ground at her feet before moving up slowly.
"Drop your weapon!" Tobias shouted at Tris as I pulled my hands closer to my chest.
"I did." Tris said. He can't see her or hear her. He doesn't know her just like how Jeanine had said. I watched as Tris and Tobias fought. I moved closer to the wall so I could avoid getting hit. I watched as Tris begged for Tobias to fight the simulation, to come back to her. I was half sure that it would work but you never know. I watched Tris turn the gun in her hands and press it into Tobias' palm, closing her eyes and waited for the shot to come.
"Tobias, it's me." Tris said, begged really. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him. She listened to her heart beating. The gun in his hand fell to the floor. He grabbed her shoulders, pretty hard because she cried out in pain.
"Tris." Tobias said before his mouth collided with hers. I quickly looked up at the roof, hoping that they would be done in a few seconds.
"Sydney. Are you okay?" Tris asked after a few moments, pulling me back to reality.
"Fine, fine, just perfect. Nothing like a gun blasted out of my hands." I said with a small smile on my face. "But it doesn't matter at this point in time, we have trouble down below." I said as I pointed towards the screen that showed Caleb, Sora, Roxas, Marcus, Peter, Goofy and Donald surrounded by Dauntless soldiers.
"Tobias, now!" Tris shouted as Tobias ran towards the computer screen and taped it a few times. There was a spark from one of the guns on screens. After a moment, the Dauntless stirred. Tobias pressed the screen again, and everyone on the first floor went still, their arms dropping to their sides.
Then the Dauntless moved. They turned there heads from side to side, dropped their guns, and moved their mouths like they were shouting.
"You guys get the data, I'm gonna see Roxas and Sora." I told them as I got up and walked out of the room. I made my way past all the bodies and towards the elevator. Once the doors closed, I leaned against the cold wall of the elevator and sighed. I didn't know if I should be scared or relieved that I was still alive. The coldness of the wall felt nice against my heated skin. It was too short before the elevator doors opened once again and I was part of a shouting crowd of Dauntless soldiers. I tried to look for Sora or Roxas in the crowd but it seemed impossible until we were leaving the glass building.
"Sydney!" Sora shouted as he and Roxas ran up towards me. I felt Sora wrap his arms around me and I buried my face into his shoulder, taking in his strawberry smell.
"What happened to your hands?" Roxas asked as Sora pulled away from me. I looked over at Roxas to see his hair was even more messed up than normal.
"Tobias shot my gun out of my hands while he was under the simulation." I said as Sora grabbed my hands and started to heal them.
"I was so scared." Roxas said as he wrapped his arms behind me and kissed the top of my head.
"I'm sorry." I said as I leaned back into him.
"Can we finally leave now?" Roxas asked after a few moments of quiet.
"Yes, lets go somewhere else." I said with a smile on my face. I turned my head to look at Roxas before falling asleep.
