Chapter 15: Soul Compatibility
"Soulmate" is an overused term, but a true soul connection is very rare, and very real."
― Hilary Duff, Devoted
"Soul Compatibility." Stein said out loud as he scribbled the words on the board before he swerved to face the class.
"A simple theory of a meister and one or more weapons syncing on the same wavelength, empowering each other and exert more power. However, it is something that isn't easily gained."
He shot a glance at Marie who immediately switched into her weapon form, landing in Stein's hand. "The simplest rule is to respect the will of the weapon that they are not just a tool; but human too. When you do so, the weapon will move with ease." He started, before he threw Marie towards the row of students.
The hammer spun diagonally upwards, narrowly missing the heads of the students, making some shriek in horror of such a dangerous weapon impaling them. Before the weapon hit the wall, it spun back like a boomerang, shooting back into Stein's firm grip.
"However, if the connection does not work out, it will cause distortion of mind, searing heat, a sudden increase of weight and of course, maybe damaging your relationship with the person."
The grey-haired scientist seemed to look at the weapon he held for confirmation, and before Maka's eyes, the linkage between them suddenly went snap, and it blew the seemly connected bond apart as the meister's soul expanded.
None of the students missed the look of pain that passed through Stein as a part of his soul went slightly static for a second as he dropped the weapon the ground abruptly and it landed on the ground with a loud thud.
The blonde woman shifted back to her human form as her fingers brushed against her partner's, sending him an assuring look that no harm had came to her. A wave of calamity set in as Maka watched their connection being reinstated, smiling slightly at their quiet gestures.
"This is the basics of soul compatibility." Marie stated in her soft voice. "You are given three months to switch around to find someone that you feel is the best match for you. The tags that you bear will make it easier for you, so you may now commence in finding your first partners."
A few pair of eyes sourced for each other, smiling quizzically to want to try it out. Black*Star, ignoring the random stares he was getting strode towards Tsubaki, grinning like crazy as he held his hand out to her.
"It's only natural if you stick to your God right?" He asked boldly, a tint of red overcoming his natural tan skin that he had on his cheeks.
Tsubaki smiled shyly before she reached out to grasp his hand. Stein watched in wonder as they instantly connected, the gears of their connection being set into motion. He cocked his head, knowing of Tsubaki's adaptability and her various forms that she had yet to discover.
She could have picked a more… conservative partner, but he knew that only she could neutralize and empower Black*Star as his antics weren't something that someone could easily deal with finesse.
Black*Star prodded Tsubaki to change into her weapon form, wanting to see if her weapon was suited to his taste. She accepted it eagerly for she knew that they needed to work on their coordination and a feeling of what it was like to be a weapon, wielded by someone. The Camellia reached within for her source of power, as a small smoke overcame the room, drawing out the chain scythe before landing promptly in Black*Star's hands. He smiled in triumph as he inspected it before he sent it flying towards Maka and Soul, who was just sitting there, looking bored.
In a flash, Soul raised his arm and changed his arm into the scythe, scowling at the blunette. He watched as the scythe rebound back to its meister before he tucked his normal hand into his pocket. "Already picking a fight when you got your new weapon? The way you treat Tsubaki isn't cool man."
"I wasn't aiming you Soul."
"You know that I'd duck it either way. Why are you even trying?" Maka said offhandedly, barely glancing up from the book she was engrossed in reading.
The pairs froze when scalpels flew past their face, missing them by an inch.
"No fighting in the class." Stein said coldly. "You can fight in the courtyard with teacher's supervision, seeing that the advanced class has always been a competitive class."
Tsubaki changed back to her human form, looking at her teachers in an apologetic manner. "They didn't mean to do it. They were just laying around in their own…. Violent way."
Stein waved it off, not fazed by the raven=haired beauty uptake of responsibilities. It was awfully awkward to see how perfectly opposite the weapon was to her new meister, cancelling every bad trait of his to the nitty gritty details.
"What about Soul and Maka? Will you be partners?" The scientist asked, peering at their souls curiously.
The mentioned pair looked at each other for a few seconds, before shrugging.
"Why the hell not?" Soul muttered.
"I'd love to wield a scythe like how Mama did." The ash-blonde girl piped up, nudging Soul. She wasn't surprised at all that his scythe was red and black, but it worried her that the experimentations on him had affected him so much that it even defined his weapon color coding.
"Why don't you two test it out first to check your soul compatibility?" Stein suggested, although he knew that it would work out perfectly. It took more than just brute force to stop a blade that was going to impale her; it took the acknowledgement of each other to do so. To add on, Soul already seemed to have that edge of protectiveness for the ash-blonde girl, he noted, seeing his quick reflexes just now.
The albino shot his soon-to-be partner his signature smirk before he changed into his weapon form with ease, allowing Maka to grasp onto him before his structure solidified. Maka let out a gasp of awe as she marveled the scythe, liking every angle of aesthetics.
Frankenstein had almost wanted to rub his eyes at the sight before him. The two before him connected in such a level that would take partners at least a year to accomplish and yet, if he had to define how strong their resonance was, it was like gears spinning at a high speed, perhaps even fast than one in trains.
'Just who are they and what have they exactly been through together to allow them to have such a high resonance rate?' Stein thought as he slouched deeper into his chair, light glinting off his glasses as he inspected them even closer. 'I had expected it to be high but this has certainly reset the bar to a whole new level.'
Perhaps he would have called Soul's soul chaotic from the abrupt red tinges when he was going through the change, but in unexplainable circumstances, Maka seemed to be the antidote to his inner conflict. It was an amazing sight, Stein recalled, as his soul calmed down to a constant colour, with the other interference disappearing without a trace.
'This will certainly be an interesting year, something worthy of recognition.'
Stein was busy recording the currently formed partners, when the Brooklyn sisters approached him hesitantly, with determination filled in their eyes.
"Is it compulsory to be meister and weapon? Can it not be weapon with weapon? The weapon meister would only need to work harder, right? Such aptitude a can be trained." Liz spoke quickly, with Patty bobbing her head rapidly in agreement.
"For any other dual weapon, I'd agree." Stein started, staring intensely into their eyes alternatively. "However, you are different. For a certain period of time, your souls were almost interconnected, and yes, while you're being paired, you are connected; but not in the way we want to expect. It's a bond of siblings; rather than meister and weapon which will certainly make you a weaker pair."
Before they could protest, he held up his hand slightly to continue. "To reach your full potentials, you both have to be wielded; it's not a choice but rather a condition. Sure, you won't be invulnerable while your meister is occupied, but with your limitations, you expect to defeat the likes of your hell?"
The two blonde women winced at the revelation, although part of them had already known that from the start. They had wanted approval, but instead they had gotten a mental knock down with a good dosage of truth which they were forced to accept.
"If you cannot find someone suitable, I will pair you up with someone that will match your capabilities." The grey-haired scientist stated.
The look of defiance returned to their eyes. "We aren't handicapped; we are perfectly capable of finding someone suitable for us." Liz growled.
Stein held back a smirk.
As they approached to their seats, the door to the classroom was pried open, a man with half-striped hair and wearing a formal suit entering with people who noticed his presence being hypnotized by his gold eyes that went from a deep colour in the iris to a light one. Scratch that - his presence was dominating in the classroom, it fell silent.
Sensing the awed tension, the mysterious person finally cleared his throat and introduced himself. "I am Death the Kid, and I'm the new student."
Kid officially makes his debut! -dances around the room- I can't seem to bring out... the tension well enough. Ugh. And I'm sorry it took so long .
I'd sincerely love you more if you read what I'm going to convey.
1. To Soiejo: Chrona is GENDERLESS. I just like to portray him as well, I'm used to it and saying 'pink-haired person' is weird. So it kinda stuck. Sorry to offend you but, get your facts right :P
2. I'm sorry to the fans who prefer one character more than the other, but I'm actually really used to writing stories that revolved around Soul and Maka. But no worries - Outtakes are PROMISED when this story ends to give you a perception on their lives. So make your requests ;)
3. NO ROMANCE IS GUARANTEED. When I started this story, I didn't want romance. But if I can't avoid it; there will be a tinge of it.
4. Ducks. If you read far enough, you'd know I went off topic.
So do leave me your honest reviews! Do you like the change and AU I implanted? (haha, because its science and all... that was lame)
Favorite and Follow! Recommend it if you will ;)
