"Oh no. Oh no" was the first thing Hange Zoe said and thought after opening the door to their lab that morning.
"What happened?" from behind them, Levi tried to look.
"We're in deep shit" they breathed, stepping into the room.
"Disgusting" he rolled his eyes, following them "You may be in shit, considering you never bat- fuck" he stopped right at their side, his arms uncrossing from the impression.
Because right there in the middle of the lab where three kids. Three kids, deep in Military propriety. Three kids.
"You don't think…" Hange mumbled, eyeing the kids.
"Actually, yes"
"Only one way to know" walking towards the kids, they took in their arms the only awake one. The kid (She? He? Their hair was too long and their face too neutral to say) clenched and unclenched their fists from the ground, giggling in the moment they took them "Hello there. What is your name?"
"A'min!" he laughed, clapping with his tiny hands.
"Yay! Armin" they bounced him on their hip, smiling at the little kid. Tuning to Levi, their smile turned an anxious grimace.
"We have to tell Erwin" in long strides he crossed the room, picking the sleeping kids and placing them on each hip, their heads in his shoulders.
"What? No! He's going to kill me!" placing a hand under Armin's butt and the other on his back to hold him against them, they ran after Levi "Careful with Eren and Mikasa! Do you know anything about kids?!"
"Do you?" he called back.
"There is no other choice but having to take care of them" Erwin rested his forehead on his fists, elbows on the table in front of him.
"But how? Erwin, we don't have the means! And if people knew Eren is a baby-"
"They won't" Levi passed his arm around Eren's waist as the kid moved, holding him close to him.
"No, they won't" Erwin nodded.
"Brat, eat your food"
"No!"
"Eren, please" feeding Armin, Hange looked at the brown haired boy in front of them "Be a good kid to Levi and I'll give you something later, okay?"
"Okay!" grabbing his spoon happily with his right hand, Eren started to push the mashed potatoes into the spoon with his left hand.
"Eren, let me help you" trying to grab the spoon, Levi leaned over.
"Nein!" the boy moved it away from the Captain reach, sticking his tongue out.
"Eren, what was that?" Hange looked at the boy with a big smile, spoon stopping in the middle of the way to Armin's mouth.
"NO!" he yelled, bringing his fist down in the middle of the plate.
"What the fuck, four eyes?" Levi stood up, looking down at his now dirty shirt.
"I swear he said 'no' in some other language!"
"He's a kid! They say funny stuff sometimes!" taking off his cravat, Levi started to walk towards his wardrobe. This was the last time he let the kids be around there.
"Levi! Not here" Hange looked at him when he began undressing, eyebrows raised.
"Why not? It's just you and the kids. You don't think they will remember, do you? And I can't just stay in this dirty shirt"
"But-" interrupted by Armin's whimpers, Hange focused back on him "Fine. Just hurry up. Mikasa hasn't eaten yet"
Once he finished changing, he went back to his seat. Noticing Eren was actually fine on his own, he focused on Mikasa.
"Kid, you need to eat" she just shook her head, her eyes downcast "Why not?"
"Not hungy" she mumbled, her mouth covered by her scarf.
"Are you sure? You haven't eaten in a long while" he got leaned down to see her face, and found her with her eyes glossy.
"I miss momma and dada" she whispered, and closed her eyes tight to stop the tears from falling.
Levi heard as Eren stopped eating, and turned around to see him trying to get down his chair. He helped him, and was not really surprised to see him go to Mikasa's side.
"Don't worry" Eren smiled his childish smile and grabbed Mikasa's hand "We gonna protect you!" grabbing a little stick of some vegetable that was in a plate close to him, he gave it to Mikasa, who now much calmer munched on it happily.
By nighttime, Hange and Levi were tired. Between Eren and Mikasa's games, and Armin's constant need of attention, they were exhausted.
But seeing them sleep there, with their faces as peaceful as they had never seen, they couldn't help but be happy.
"I think we did well" they smile, leaning their shoulder on Levi.
"Yeah, I think we did"
