Getting groceries was not something Eren found particularly hard. It was just searching for the things in the list, pushing a cart, speaking to your sister from time to time to make sure she wasn't bored and then going to pay for the stuff. It was supposed to be easy.
"I always forget…you like chocolate milk, right Sash?... Sasha?!" turning around, Eren frenetically looked around to try and find his little sister "No, no, no, no, not again" he mumbled, throwing the milk in the cart and starting to push it. "Mom's gonna kill me, mom's gonna kill me"
It's not like he had lost her many times…five were not that many, right? And he had always found her…
Now, if he was a seven years old girl, where would he be?
"God fucking dammit" he whispered as he looked down the third aisle without his sister on it. "Sash! Where are you?! Please, we don't want mom killing me!" he yelled, because goddammit all, the place wasn't even that big!
"Eren?" a little head popped from the candy aisle, brown hair tied in a ponytail "Over 'ere! I made a new frien'!" she ran to her brother, staring to tug his hand while walking towards the aisle.
A million of thoughts ran in Eren's head.
He decided to ignore the worst ones (please let it not be a pedophile, please let it not be a pedophile), and just settle for thinking it was probably just another kid with love for food. She had met Connie in a supermarket, after all. Even though their mother was there when that happened…
"Sasha, you are not supposed to talk with strangers!" he hissed, turning his sister so she faced him. One could never be too careful.
"I know, but she's nice!" she insisted, bouncing on her feet "You may even like her, she's real pretty. It's 'bout time you get a girlfrien'"
"Sasha, I don't need a girlfr-" he tried to say as they rounded the corner, stopping dead in his track as he saw who was waiting for his little sister.
She was pretty. Real pretty. And the way she smiled to his little sister, not wasting time and resuming their conversation like it hadn't stopped…
"Eren" Sasha's voice broke him out of his daze "This is Mikasa. She's your age!" she smirked, arching her eyebrows.
"Sasha, don't" he whispered, using one of his hands to push her eyebrows down. He then turned to look at the girl "Nice to meet you" he smiled, shaking her hand as she nodded.
"Nice to meet you too. Now, Sasha, I really have to go. You found you brother, so you're going to be okay"
"But Mikasa" Sasha whined, swinging her arms - he could remember himself doing that when he was young and his mother wouldn't give him what he wanted. He still did it sometimes.
"Do you have a cellphone?" she asked, taking out her own "We can still text"
Eren wondered what kind of teenager would be willing to give her number to a child. He got suspicious for a moment, before thinking that she easily could give a fake number.
"-have it here, but my brother does!" he could hear, snapping out of his thoughts "Eren!" Sash turned to him, giving him the puppy eyes before he could say anything.
"Fine, here" he gave it to her, looking at her for a moment to see what would she say about his flowery case. She just smiles.
"Nice one. My brother has a similar one. His girlfriend has matching pants"
He shrugged, smiling a little.
"I like it"
Sasha then saved the number as "Mika (:" and sent a text immediately after.
The girl's phone vibrated and Sasha looked ecstatic.
They said goodbye, Sasha wishing her 'good luck in the math test' and Mikasa answering with a 'good luck with him' and a wink.
They were on their way home when Sasha took out her phone from her denim overalls' pocket.
"What? You had it with you?" he looked at her briefly, looking back at the road a second later.
"Yeah, of course"
"And you didn't use it to save Mikasa's number?"
"Hey, you'll thank me later"
He actually does, months later when he brings Mikasa home for the first time.
