Chapter 5: Go Go! Rescue Team!
As I was dropping in the air I braced myself for the fall. All around me the city was in flames around the place. I could see squads of bots roaming about as people were trapped inside. Hunters and huntresses seemed to be trying to hold back the bots but it was no use. Rescue the civilians first, prevent the early deaths of these people. I slided my fingers across my visor and commanded my bracer to scan for life signals. I looked across the buildings and found people trapped within their buildings with bots banging on the door and fire surrounding them. A few bodies were strewn at the door, which I assumed to be either dead or unconscious.
I landed on the ground with a crater, as did team RWBY, using their aura to cushion the fall. V landed with a thud on the ground, his systems being made to take high falls and such. I scanned the rest of the area quickly to notice that almost every building had people trapped in them. "Priority one are the civilians," I ordered the four of them. They nodded and ran off in search for the civilians. I lifted up the V-Commander, "V-Raptor, Warrior mode," I told it.
"V-Raptor warrior mode initiated!" It responded.
V then began to change as his body lifted up, as his head compressed to slide down. His arms transformed into black hands as a compressed helmet opened up coming from the neck joint. The helmet expanded as green eyes lit up and a metal mouth mask appeared beneath it. His head looked similar to that of a crown shape as it stood up straight and roared.
"V, I need you in those buildings," I told him while pointing to several buildings in the east. "Rescue the people and make sure that they are safe. Terminate any enemy along the way."
It nodded then proceeded to run towards the buildings, leaving me to take care of the people in the others. I ran towards a building, the front entrance was on fire as it was crumbling down. I bolted inside as my suit's display showed me where the civilians were, they were directly above of me on the top floor. I could see ashes falling around me as I saw a pair of stairs that were still intact.
I walked forward cautiously, making sure to watch for falling debris. As I walked forward I heard crumbling from above me. Looking up I could see the floor giving way I dived to the right to make sure that I wasn't crushed. It blocked the way to the stairs but it didn't matter. Well, there's my way up, I jumped up and climbed my way up to the next floor. There was the door to the left that led to the set of stairs that were blocked due to the debris, it was too hot to touch even with my suit on. So I took out my blade from my holster on the right and cut it open with a clean slice.
With the obstacle out of the way I proceeded to run up the stairs. Turning around the corner I saw a group of robots attacking a young female and male. They seemed to be a couple, and a recently new one at that. I switched the DV Defender into it's blaster form and blasted two of the robots in the head, causing them to fall over. There were four remaining and as they noticed me shoot down their comrade they turned to face me. Shooting their lasers at me from their weapon, I rolled forward and proceeded to shoot. Running to the side as I shot one in the head, as I neared to the last two I punched one straight in the head, causing it to fall from the sheer power.
The last one tried to get into close combat with me but I had already had my blaster in my hand. It went for a right punch which I promptly blocked with my left. I then moved my blaster close and shot it cleanly in the head, sending sparks onto the floor. "Oh thank you!" The man said, relieved that he was safe.
"Let's get out of here," I told them, picking the both of them up and tossing them over my shoulders. I noticed a significant rise in heat as well as a wall of fire coming my way. Looking at the window I found that it would be the quickest way out. Putting my foot on the window I punched open the glass and proceeded to hang myself from the building. "Hang on!" I told them as I took out my blade and stabbed it into the wall as I the side of the building gave way to our combined weight.
We fell to the ground softly as my feet cushioned the hit. I put the two of them down and they thanked me shakily. "Mom! Dad!" I heard a boy scream from upstairs.
"Daniel!" The father shouted, his voice was shaken up.
"No!" The mother screamed as she fell to the ground.
"Please, you have to save him," The father begged me, looking me dead in the eyes with fear and panic.
I nodded, "Of course," I told him. "It's my job."
I then proceeded to go back into the building, I felt a massive heat surge as I entered the front of the building. Fire was everywhere and it was even harder to breathe than before. Most of the floor was caving in and the smoke was making it harder to see. My visual sensors didn't pear through smoke after all. I noticed a warning sign in the top right corner, CAUTION! IMMENSE HEAT! CAUTION. Blasted heat was making it so much harder to see.
I heard the scream come from upstairs again, this time farther away from where I rescued the couple from. "I'm coming!" I screamed back.
"Mom! Dad! I'm scared!" The boy screamed. He didn't seem more than 5 years of age.
I jumped up and made my way through the door. Now that the explosion of heat was gone I could now see that debris had fallen onto the entrance to the door. I wiped my visor and scanned around me for a way upwards. Using a heat detection system I noticed a significant shift in the heat in one of the rooms. Heading towards it I found a hole in the ceiling, using that as a way up I began to run towards where the boy was. Thankfully the stairs on this floor weren't blocked so I made my way to floor five.
"Help!" I heard him scream yet again.
"I'm coming!" I yelled as I tried the lock. It was locked. "Figures!"
I slammed myself against the door and broke the lock open. The kid's screams turned to sobbing as I turned to the left where my detection systems picked him up. Turning around the corner I found a fridge in a kitchen with bots scratching it open. The fridge door was almost falling apart as I could see that it was only on a few of its hinges.
The bots noticed me come around, and fired their laser at me. I ducked below and shot one of them by the ankle. I proceeded forward as I activated DV Defender's freeze strike and slashed across in front of me. I something grab my leg from below then people grab me from behind. I could hear the clanks of the robots from behind me as I heard them ready up for a firing squad.
Noticing this I kicked up my foot before stomping on the one on the ground. I flung one of the bots off of my shoulder and into the wall, tumbling it down. I picked up the last bot and kicked him into the firing squad, busting their bodies and detaching them from their heads. I then proceeded to blast the bots in the head and hitting their main control center.
As I turned around I saw the boy who had been in the fridge opening it and looking at me in awe. I turned to him, I didn't know what I looked like to him but I hoped that he was okay. "Are you a super hero?" He asked.
"Well, I guess you could call me that," I responded. "Now come on, we've got to get out of here."
When I took a step forward the floor in front of the fridge crumbled as the fridge leaned on. The boy then gripped onto the sides of the floor as the floor almost fell. He then clung onto the inside of the fridge. "Come on! Jump!" I told him.
He wouldn't move at all, I bit my lip, "You can do it! I believe in you! You're strong!" I encouraged him to jump. I crouched down as I prepared myself to jump when he jumped.
"I'm scared!" He screamed as he began to slide down.
"Don't be," I told him, "Hey, look at me." I undid my helmet as air decompressed from it. He looked at me whimpering slightly. "Put this on, the helmet gives you super powers." I lied a bit. The kid did so and faced me. "Ready?" I asked.
He nodded hesitantly as he took a second to jump from the fridge. He was about to fall as I dived forward and caught him, rolling myself in mid-air so that my back would face the falling floor. We crashed through the five floors until we landed on the first facing the entrance. Each hit to my back felt like the shattering of shrapnel but I endured it. Grimacing as the burning wood hit my back, but it was my duty. I needed to protect the child and restore balance to the time line, dissolving all of the casualties.
Reaching the ground the kid was unconscious simply from the shock. I got up and ran out the front, giving the kid back to his parent. The mother and father hugged him so tightly that he awoke. "Mom! Dad!" He screamed in joy.
"Thank you," The father thanked relieved that his son was alive.
"Thank you mister," The child told me, returning my helmet to me.
"You're welcome," I told him.
Placing the helmet back on I received a signal from team RWBY, they seemed to be finished. It was Ruby on the other side as they were in a flaming building. Weiss was in the background as she stabbed a robot in the head with her rapier. Ruby was running out as she was holding onto people on her back. Yang was beside her and she was the one holding onto the scroll.
"We're almost done here Haru," Ruby told me.
"Good now rendezvous back to me," I told her, sending my approximate path way into the center of the city.
"We'll meet you there in a few minutes," Ruby told me as she signed off. Now to make my way to the center of the city.
Running around the corner I saw a group of robots converging on me they were bouncing up and down as they marched slowly forwards. There was one last blockade up in an attempt to secure the robots from breaking down through and continuing their rampage. The police continued to try to shoot at the robots but they shrugged off their weaponry. Of course they would, they had been designed in the future to combat future technology. Of course they would've shrugged off the conventional weaponry they had at this time.
I jumped forward and began to cut through the group, from side to side. After they registered my entrance they began to circle me. I prepared myself to attack as I began to fling robots from side to side. I began to hack and slash my way through, clearing as much area as possible for me to work in. I overdrove my suits capabilities, using the freeze strike continuously to finish each group in a single slash. But it wasn't enough, and soon enough it overheated from the constant application.
I fell on my knees as I huff and puffed from the exhaustion. The system was cooling down and had a forced shut down mode which paralyzed me in the spot. The robots noticed my lack of advancement and continued to go forward. Some fired their lasers at me, causing an explosion to occur and send me spiralling backwards. I crashed into the blockade that the police had set up as they fell back behind their cars.
I could barely move as I struggled on the ground. The lasers that hit me caused immense pain. It felt like everything in my body was dislocated. Pain seared everywhere and I groaned, trying to contain my own screams. I huffed and breathed my vision was becoming unclear, though it seemed that, although my suit took most of the brunt force, that it didn't protect much against the falls and ballistic force I received from hitting the ground at high speed.
As I lay there heaving in pain, I watched as the robots advanced onto me and the rest of the police force. The police force was timid; they knew that none of their weaponry worked against the robots who either shrugged them off, or multiplied because of them. I could hear muffled screams as my vision slowly and slowly blurred. I can't fall here, it's not my time yet. I still have to complete the mission.
I heard a sudden crash coming from the side of the building as I lied there, the sound was still muffled as I was half-unconscious but at the same time I could see a figure walking through and destroying the robots with ease. I took a deep breath as I tried to come back into reality, get up! Get up body! Don't give up! I slowly stood up as I shook myself off of the ground, my body shaking as I got up. Whoever was fighting the robots came to my aid. Focussing my vision on it I saw that it was V in his warrior mode. He gave me his body to lean on as I rested on him.
"Thanks V," I told him.
It roared in response, it continued to look forward as robots were advancing on us. He then looked at me, signalling to me a message. Can you fight? He seemed to ask me. I nodded and he return to look at the group of advancing robots.
Regaining my footing I began to return back into the fight. There were hundreds of them, but with my partner we would take them all down. Even if it took our lives we would bring Jack down and bring peace back to this timeline. So with our resolve we charged back into the fray to meet the sea of robots.
Team RWBY were running out of an office floor, as they just finished calling Haru and informing them of their current whereabouts. Weiss was off dealing with any robot that would come their way, swiftly stabbing them precisely in the head. She would have frozen them but in their current environment she couldn't do that. It was much too hot for any liquids.
Yang was carrying about five people on her back as she was running out. Of course she would be the one to carry to most, after all, she was the power set of the four. Always the strongest hitter of the group, so naturally that would mean that her body would be the most fit and capable for heavy lifting. The two of them ran for the exit as Blake and Weiss continued to clear their way of robots.
Ruby was ahead of the group and as she rounded the corner to get onto the stairs she saw a wave of fire coming down their way. "Ah!" She said, ducking her head backwards, bumping into Yang who stumbled backwards slightly.
"Whoa! Ruby!" Yang exclaimed. "Are you alright!"
"Yeah, it's just, a bit of smoke, nothing hit me," Ruby said, coughing a bit.
"It's getting too hot in here for us!" Weiss hollered.
"Well princess! Our only exit is not blocked," Yang said as the debris and flames still resided after the explosion of fire.
"Then we'll get out of the window," Blake said, shooting at the closest window.
"Are you kidding? We have civilians!" Weiss said.
"Weiss, we've got no choice," Ruby said. "Toss your glyphs and we'll slowly come down."
"Alright, but this is crazy, do you realize how high we are!" Weiss exclaimed.
"It's that or we die up here, I'd take my chances with the window," Yang said.
"You're right," Weiss admitted. "This is just crazy."
"Let's go!" Ruby ordered.
The four began to make their slow descent down the side of the building from the top. Weiss was the one with the most difficult job as she had to ensure that the civilians landed safely, this would use up most of her aura, almost exhausting it. When the four finally made it to the ground after hopping on several hundreds of glyphs Weiss was tired out.
She was panting from all of the aura that she had to use to create those platforms for the civilians. Ruby herself was making sure that the civilians were okay, checking up on them to make sure that nothing hurt them. Yang set down her load and set off to prepare to go off to meet up with Haru. Blake was readying up Gambol Shroud, reloading it and reloading it and checking the chambers.
Ruby proceeded to call up the police for a nearby ambulance to pick up more civilians. They had been in constant touch throughout the entire mission as the civilians needed proper care. Scanning around she could see the city in ruins, everything was down and burning, either the building would be crumbling with fire brimming from the windows, or it would already be ashened and a pile of bricks. Either way you looked at it, the city was in jeopardy and in need of dire assistance.
"Are we ready to go?" Ruby asked.
"Yeah," Weiss answered, finishing catching her breath.
Yang and Blake nodded, "Let's go!" Ruby said. "We've got to save the town!"
The four of them began to run towards the center of the city. Passing by and cutting through straggling squads of the robots which were converging towards the center. Supposedly to where Haru is. That would be the most logical reason, but either way. The four of them had their current goal in mind, arrive and assist Haru and put an end to Jack.
The five of them had the same goal and same mindset. They had seen what Jack was capable of and what kind of a deranged person he was. He needed to be stopped, here, and now. They feared what would happen if he wasn't stopped today. Especially a specific person, Blake, she knew that Haru was disappearing. If he wasn't there to help them what could they do? They were stronger together, what with Haru's advanced weapons.
But that wasn't it, if Haru disappeared today, then the emotional trauma it would cause Ruby was too much than they could bear. It's like being told you're supposed to die, nobody wants to know that they die on a specific date. That their end is soon and that she'll never reach the end of her story. The end of her dream would be unfulfilled, this was the worst that you could ever do to a person, stripping them of their dream and will to continue was even more emotionally scarring than death itself. An unfulfilled life was a worthless life, and for an innocent soul like Ruby's it would be too scarring. Actually thinking about it now, Blake felt kind of hopeless, Jack almost walked all over the five of them when they first met. What was to stop him from doing it again? And this time, even worse? Blake shook her brain and got back on track. No, there was no way that they were going to lose.
We have to win.
