Ch 38: Popcorn

Ty's eyes widen, and I freak out. "No, stop, no! Leave him alone!" I screech, banging on the black bars surrounding me.

And then suddenly I'm not beating the metal to death, I'm just standing there in the cage, perfectly still.

I am horrified when a smile creeps onto my face.

What's going on!? Why can't I move, why can't I speak!?

"William paralyzed you, idiot. He put you in the position he wanted the others to see you in, and then he stuck you there. He learned that trick from me, you know. I used to do that when you were young, stick you in the corner and paralyze you when you wouldn't cooperate."

Well, can you help me out of it? I can't let him hurt Ty!

"He's not hurting Ty, Ty's hurting himself."

Then I can't let Ty hurt Ty!

"Sk-Sky..?" Ty asks in a horrified whisper, staring at the crooked smile on my face. No, no! I have to stop this!

Let me move! Please, I just- Dad, can you help me at all?

"I could."

Then do it!

"But I won't."

"What's wrong, Ty?" the GameMaster asks evilly. "Oh, is it Skybrine? Does his reaction – or, rather, his lack of reaction – surprise you? It shouldn't. He's the son of Herobrine. He loves this kind of thing, remember? He loves seeing his friends – especially you – in pain."

If I could move, William would be dead and rotting by now.

My father sighs in my head. "I wish he would tell you the truth. I'm so tired of hiding it for him."

I- what? What do you mean? How's he been lying to me? I am your son, right? I mean, I knew that before the game show.

"Oh, yes, yes, you're still my son. It's your other parent that I'm concerned about."

What do you mean?

Was the GameMaster the one who killed Mom!?

"U-Uh- Not quite, Skybrine."

Then who was it? Tell me! After all these years, I deserve to know how she died.

"She, erm- she didn't die, son."

What?

"Do you need help, Ty? I can help you out. Or, if you don't want to use a diamond axe, I can get you a sword or a pickaxe or something."

"Why are you focusing this on Ty?" Jason asks angrily.

"Because Ty did exactly what I told him not to – he shared our little secret with Skybrine."

Ty's eyes widen, and mine would, too, if I wasn't paralyzed. "What secret?" Ian asks skeptically, and I notice that Quentin is trying to disappear into Ian's side.

"Would you like to share the secret with everyone else?" the GameMaster asks Ty.

Ty ignores him, asking instead, "How did you know?"

The GameMaster chuckles. "You and Skybrine had a nice little sob-fest in his bedroom after the fourth mini-challenge. You forgot to hide."

No. No, no, no- oh my Notch.

"Wait, so you- Sky wasn't keeping you in there against your will, you wanted to stay there with him," Mitch realizes, his voice still shaking from his near-death encounter a few minutes ago.

Ty nods meekly. "Y-Yes. T-That's right."

"Why don't you tell them why you didn't mind staying with Skybrine?"

"We- He- Well, I- I never a-actually hated him," Ty admits quietly.

Half the people in the room gasp. "But- But-"

Ty sighs. "The GameMaster told me to stop being Sky's friend after the Second Challenge."

"So? You didn't have to listen to him," Jerome says angrily.

"Um, actually, I... I did. He threatened to hurt Sky if I didn't. He made me remember the pain I went through and Sky's screams from during our Challenge, and he said he would give Sky that pain all over again if I didn't do what he told me to."

"How come you suddenly just flat-out hated him after the second mini-challenge?" Quentin asks.

"Every time I got a question wrong," Ty explains, tearing up a bit, "A video played where Sky was getting hurt, l-like during the time when the GameMaster explained the Rules. He told me to step it up and be a better non-friend."

"Oh, but you forgot the picture that I played before each video, the one you loved so much! I spent so much time photoshopping that thing, you don't even know."

Ty glares at him. "Okay, so, yeah, maybe there was one little picture of Jason and Sky kissing before each video, and maybe that sort of hurt a little. But that doesn't matter."

The GameMaster shrugs. "What can I say? I ship #SkyMU."

"Ew, he ships SkyMU? See, this is why we don't talk anymore. #Skylox for life."

You confuse me sometimes.

Ty glares at the GameMaster again and then continues. "Then came the Third Challenge- and can I just say that Sky was telling the truth? He wasn't trying to hurt me. He truly thought he was fighting his father."

"What? We haven't had any legitimate fights lately – at least, not any where you fought back. What's he talking about?"

Hallucinations. Long story.

"Wait, so then-" Seto cuts himself off as the realization hits. Then he whispers, "Oh my Notch..."

"I am a horrible person," Mitch says quietly, and almost everyone else in the group nods in sad agreement.

"B-But that's not possible," Ian stammers. "What reason did we have to hate him if Challenge Three didn't count? Sky was always so nice to us, even after we started hating his guts- well, until this morning, that is."

Ty bites his lip before saying, "Heh, that's another thing. See, I told Sky I didn't hate him after the Fourth Challenge, but then, when I followed him and Jason out of the Dinner thingy, we told Jason as well." William makes a weird spluttering noise. I guess he didn't know that Jason knew about this whole deal. "And that was when Sky told us that his father – Herobrine – had been telepathically communicating with him and probably still is," Ty says, glancing at me.

I'm still stuck with this cruel, stupid smile on my face. Ty frowns.

"I think the constant communication with his dad is starting to get to him," he worries. "I think that's why he was so rude this morning, and that's also probably the reason that he gave Jerome that dare."

I'd like to apologize for that, but I can't.

"So, even though Sky may not have harmed Ty in that Challenge, he's still acting like his horrible, heart-breaking, sorry excuse for a father," the GameMaster growls.

"I will murder that man. I thought we'd agreed to put that behind us!"

What? What'd you do?

"Pay attention, you're interrupting my live soap opera here."

I internally roll my eyes as I turn my attention back to the Team. "Yeah, but it's our fault!" Jerome says sadly. "Even if he is starting to act a little more like his dad, it's all our fault, because we didn't support him throughout this whole deal. We weren't there for him like real friends would have been."

"Ugh, we should have believed him," Ian groans.

"We are the worst friends in the entire world," Seto sighs, looking down.

The GameMaster shrugs, smiling. "Maybe you were right to desert him. After all, even if he wasn't a direct copy of his father then, he is now."

"What? One dare doesn't make him a copy of his father. He even freaked out and tried to take it back afterward," Jerome says, confused.

"Yeah, but look at him now. Does he look like he's going to forgive you for what you did? Does he look sorry for almost getting Mitch killed? Does he look scared for Ty? No, no he doesn't."

Everyone sort of freaks out after being reminded of Ty's dare – myself included. I can't panic outwardly, though, I can only rage in my thoughts.

Ty is the only one who pays real attention to what the GameMaster actually said. He's studying my face, frowning as he memorizes my horrific smile and no doubt evil-looking eyes.

"Are you okay?" he asks quietly, taking a small step in my direction. The GameMaster is watching with wary and concentrated eyes.

"Absolutely perfect," I reply against my will. It sounded like my voice; it came out of my mouth. How did he-?

"Wha- he's never been able to- oh no."

What, what is it? Stop keeping secrets from me, tell me what's going on!

"Well, um, I may have accidentally given William a small boost of extra power when you used my Pain Transfer on him."

You what!?

"I'm sorry, I didn't know that would happen!"

"Well, Ty, are you going to kill yourself, or do you need me to do it?"

Ty reluctantly turns his attention away from me, immediately snapping, "Oh, sure, you can go ahead and kill yourself if you want. We won't mind."

The GameMaster raises an eyebrow in surprise. "That sounded like something Skybrine might say."

"That's okay."

"So I'm guessing you do want me to kill you? It'd probably be a bit easier emotionally."

"I don't-"

"Skybrine? Which option do you think he should pick?"

My creepy grin grows slightly, and I find myself answering, "Oh, either one. Both options lead to his gory death, so I'm happy either way."

No. No, no, no.

The Team gapes at me while Ty just closes his eyes. "T-Then I guess you can just do it," he says with a defeated tone of voice.

On the inside I am yelling, screaming, begging for him to fight it. Waiting expectantly for the rest of the Team to stand up for him, fight the GameMaster.

But he doesn't. They don't.

Ty is going to die.
