I remember the invasion from years ago. I was merely eight years old when the monsters began to show. Everything was in utter chaos. Monsters roaming the streets and people falling victim to the disease that came with them. My mother was among the sick. My brother and I watched her get sicker, and sicker every day until she finally perished. None of us at the time knew the dangers of that disease until she rose from our parent's bed hours later. Our dad went in to say a few final words before he called the coroner. He never came back out. Neither I nor my brother went into that room. Sometime when we would walk by it, we would listen, hearing heavy breathing and groans. Years passed, that door never opened… Until today…
"Seer, I'm telling you this is a bad idea." I say as I follow him to the door.
"It will be fine Fieldmouse. Stop worrying so much." He replied.
Eight years have passed since mom died and dad went to see her. I am sixteen now and Seer is seventeen. Seer and I have seen the world as it was now. The locals in our small town have turned into what my brother calls zombies. Being a zombie nut like he is, he knows how to kill them. Aim for the head. And now I know.
Seeing as how the town's folk had turned into zombies, we figured that's what happened to mom and dad. So with us both sporting 38 caliber pistols, Seer kicked down the door. As soon as the door was open the smell of rot hit us faster than you could say 'ew'.
We were right. Our parents, or their corpses, began shambling towards us, growling. We didn't hesitate one second as we aimed and pulled the trigger. It only took a few rounds from both of us to kill the corpses. We learned its best to call them corpses instead of by name. So that's what we did. That doesn't mean you don't feel pain, it's just not as bad.
We went inside to raid the room. Anything that was valuable we would take. Seer found dads platinum wedding band, his Rolex watch and an old gold chain. Mom kept most of her valuables in her sock drawer. I opened it and found a small red box. I opened it and dumped it on the dresser. As I sifted through it I found our birth certificates, gold and silver broches, bracelets and ear studs. Then I found something I couldn't sell. Mom's wedding band. Its platinum with emeralds embedded in the center.
"Hey Seer?"
"Yeah?"
"Save dads wedding band." He looked at me funny but didn't question why.
"ok." He said. He tucked the ring into his pocket. Once we got every valuable we could find, we left the house to raid the other houses.
The town is deserted. No one is here to miss their valuables, right?
