'There are so many baby posters.'

I laughed and nodded. "Right?"

Emmett's eyes drifted from one picture to the next, occasionally leafing through the magazine he had picked up. The waiting room was full of my family. I hope no one else has an appointment anytime soon. Daphne was intrigued by a magazine across the waiting room, Kathryn and Regina talking next to her. Toby had had no desire to step foot into an OB/GYN office, and Melody had deemed that there were enough people to tell her what had happened.

What felt like an eternity later, the door opened. "Bay Kennish?"

I stood, tapping Emmett's arm and making my way to the door, trying to pull my pants from where they had ridden down by sitting. I would have to go shopping very soon.

"Is this the father?" There was a different nurse from last time, and I was perfectly fine with that.

"Yeah. This is Emmett."

She nodded and took my weight, height, yada yada yada. Once done with the blood pressure and writing on her chart, she smiled. "Go ahead and put on this gown, and Dr. Olenick will be right with you." She laid the gown on the bed before walking out.

I reached up and jerked the curtain between me and Emmett, quickly changing before opening it again.

'What happens now?'

"Now the doctor comes in and does ultrasound stuff. I think." I sat on the bed, the paper crinkling beneath me.

'We get to see the baby? Do we get to know the gender?' He grinned widely, suddenly very excited.

"Not for awhile, no. But I think we see the baby." A light knock sounded on the door and I turned my head to it. "Come in."

Natalie came through, holding the clipboard and smiling. "Nice to see you again, Bay. And who's this?"

"This is Emmett, the father."

Emmett watched my hands before looking back to the doctor and waving slightly. Natalie held out a hand and he shook it.

"Nice to meet you, Emmett."

He pulled his hand away. 'Nice to meet you.'

"So, let's get started. You're 12 weeks, correct?"

"Yeah."

"Anything new or concerning?"

"So far, I feel like a walking stereotype."

"How so?"

"I'm cranky, I'm tired, I want to eat everything, except for the few things that smell absolutely disgusting, so on and so forth."

"Well, you are growing another person. You get a free pass. But remember, you aren't eating for two. You're eating to help your baby be healthy. A lot of women get those confused."

"So I've been told." Again and again and again. I wasn't told to eat this healthy since I was a kid.

She grinned, jotting down a few things before she set it aside, grabbing some gloves and getting the dreaded tools. "Time for your favorite part."

I sighed heavily and leaned back, situating myself in the stirrups. "Yay me."

After another eternity of the awkward small talk, she pulled away long enough to grab a wand hooked up to a screen, slipping a condom over it. "Alright. This is going to be a bit uncomfortable, but I think you're going to like it much better. This is going to take sound waves, and convert them into a picture, so that we can take a peek at what the baby looks like." She kept her head up, so Emmett would be able to read her lips.

He grinned widely, quickly turning his attention to the still blank screen.

She was right, the wand was very uncomfortable. But it faded away when I saw the gray blobs on the screen. They moved with the wand until she was satisfied and left it where it was.

Getting up, she went to the screen and pointed. "There's the head. If you look right here, that's a hand. The legs... There's your baby."

Tears filled my eyes and I ignored whatever she was doing. Writing down something and typing others. Everything around me faded away until only that screen existed. That was my baby's head. Those were my baby's feet. A touch on my stomach startled me to turn my head. Emmett's hand was on my stomach, his glassy eyes glued to the screen.

No, it wasn't my baby. It was our baby.

His eyes found mine and his hands lifted, shaking slightly. 'I didn't quite expect this.'

A small logical part of my brain wanted me to say that I had told him what was going to happen, that there was an ultrasound... but that's not what he meant. He meant this feeling. This wave of some emotion that I had never felt before. "Neither did I."

Dr. Olenick once again made herself into my world when she spoke to me directly. "One more thing, and we'll be able to wrap it up." She cleaned up after the ultrasound, the image on the screen going away. "You can get dressed, and I'll be right back."

Once gone, I quickly got up and followed orders, getting dressed before sitting on the bed, Natalie coming in shortly after with a new instrument. "Now time for the heartbeat. This is a Doppler. I know it looks small, but it's powerful. Lay back for me, please."

I laid back once again, and she pushed my shirt up slightly and tucked a napkin just over my pants, presumably so the gel in her hand didn't get on them. I shivered slightly at the cool liquid as she grabbed the wand hooked up to the Doppler. After fiddling with what looked like the volume, she handed it to Emmett. She then put the wand to my stomach and sound flooded the room. A lot of people online said it sounded like galloping horses, but to me... it was a whooshing sound. A fast whooshing sound that meant my baby was just fine in there.

Emmett sat in the chair, staring wide eyed at the device in his hand. Judging by the look on his face, Dr. Olenick had been right, and it was a powerful device that vibrated to the sound.

Natalie held the wand in place for awhile before glancing at the device in Emmett's hands and smiled. "152. That's great." She lifted the wand and handed me a rag to clean up, taking the offered device from Emmett. "Let me just get everything ready for you guys. Get the pictures and everything."

"Ok. Thank you." I sat up and offered the rag to her, which she tossed into a hamper in the corner before leaving again.

'That was our baby,' Emmett signed, still looking dazed.

"That was our baby. I guess we get pictures from the ultrasound."

'And that was the heartbeat.'

"That I guess is great. Sounded high to me, but whatever."

He smiled and nodded. 'Our baby. We have a baby.'

We did have a baby. A baby that was healthy and growing right and that french fries were not hurting, thank you very much. I knew that I would screw up eventually, but so far, I hadn't. That was one trimester almost down, two more to go, and then the rest of their life. That was a lot of given time to mess up, and I knew it was going to happen. This was, after all, my first go at this whole 'kid' thing. It was inevitable.

For once, I didn't mind much. I'd deal with it when we got there. For now... We had a baby.

Natalie came back in with some papers, and I only half listened to everything she was saying. In the papers there were pictures. There were pictures we got to keep forever of this little gray blob.

"I'll see you again in about four weeks. Make the appointment at the front desk before you go. It was nice to meet you, Emmett. Have a nice weekend."

Papers in hand, I went out to the front desk and made my appointment for October 27, once again at one. I then pulled the pictures out of the papers and returned to my family, who was looking at us expectantly.

Smiling, I held out the picture. "It's a blob."

Daphne was the first in line, but frowned slightly. "I don't see anything."

Emmett was quick to start pointing, signing as he went. Daphne shook her head at the end. "Still nothing. But cute blob."

"Cutest damn blob to exist," I said, grinning.

Mom looked, smiling widely and cooing, Regina next to her. "Oh, my goodness, we're grandmas. Look at this little thing. That's our grandchild. We need to keep this safe so we can frame it."

Regina nodded, quickly adding, "But we need to scan it first. Make sure we have copies of it everywhere."

The smile never once left my face as I listened to them talking behind me on our way out the door. Emmett walked beside me, towards my car.

"I'm going to make a stop before going home, guys," I said over my shoulder. "I need to get some pants. I'll see you in a bit."

"Ok, honey. We'll see you at home."

As they got into Mom's car, I got into mine with Emmett. "I'm going shopping. Do you want to come?"

He nodded. 'Of course.'

Only he would seem happy about going clothes shopping. Then again, it wasn't exactly clothes shopping. It was maternity shopping. There shouldn't have been a question if he would be interested in that. He was interested in anything pregnancy related.

"Off we go, then."
