My need to nest had gone down considerably after my shopping trip. Instead, all of my energy had gone into schoolwork. Now, it was February 4th, and I was already into April's work. At this rate, I might even be able to have a couple months before the baby was born free of schoolwork.
Though I hadn't gone back to the baby store, Emmett often came home with baby clothes. The closer to my due date I got, the happier they made me.
I was sitting outside by the pool when Daphne found me. She sat beside me, smiling widely.
"Guess what."
I grinned slightly. "What?"
"I got you something. Well, us something." She wiggled slightly in her seat, her excitement barely contained.
"And what did you get us?"
"A spa weekend."
I smiled widely. I had joked about a spa day to her a few days ago after complaining about my back. "Seriously?"
"Yeah! I found a place that had maternity spa packages. So we're going to go away for a weekend, no phones, just us."
"When is it?"
"Next weekend, on the 16th. We're there for three days. Come home Tuesday morning."
"You have no idea how much I love you right now."
"You like it?"
"I don't think there's a word for how much I like it. Thank you."
She smiled and leaned back in her chair. "So, have you guys thought of any names?"
"We've thought of a million names. We just can't agree on any of them. And what we do agree on, we forget about after two weeks, which I figure means that's not a good name. A good name would resonate with us, you know?"
"That makes sense."
"We haven't even started to discuss middle names. Baby Bledsoe is pretty much all we have."
She smiled slightly. "Bledsoe?"
"That was pretty much Emmett's reaction, too."
She laughed slightly and closed her eyes, just laying in the late winter sun.
...
By the time of my next appointment, the nursery was almost fully stocked, with everything anyone could think of. There was nothing really needed, but there was more room for baby clothes and shoes.
Our Lamaze class had ended a couple weeks ago, and the parenting class had ended just a few days ago. I had decided to go with the run of the mill birth plan. Go to the hospital, get the epidural, have my baby. I wanted Emmett and Kathryn in the room with me, and would have had Regina if they would let me. And if I came across something the parenting class hadn't gone over, I still had three mothers just waiting to help. Or rather, three grandmothers.
Despite his initial wariness of the situation, Toby seemed to be getting a little excited, too.
"No, I don't like Robin."
'What about Tyler?'
"Tyler... Tyler isn't too bad."
Toby had looked up from his food. "Toby's a great name. I'm just saying. Or Christopher."
I rolled my eyes. "And what if he's a girl?"
"Christine?"
I was actually starting to like the idea of Daphne as a middle name. The name I would have had, in another universe. The name of the person who had made sure Emmett was involved. Assuming, of course, that I was having a girl. I hadn't brought it up with Emmett, yet.
"Kennish?" I looked up from the baby magazine and set it aside, going into my appointment.
It wasn't long until Natalie was in the room. "So, first thing, your tests all came back wonderfully. I think your's is probably one of the best pregnancies I've seen. You haven't had even the tiniest hiccup. So congratulations."
I smiled and turned to Emmett. "We have a healthy baby."
'A super healthy baby,' he grinned.
"Super duper." I turned back to Natalie.
"How has the baby movement been doing?"
"You were right. Those kicks got hard, fast. And I read something online about a kick count, so I do that when I wake up and go to bed. Which basically means I use it as an excuse to stay in bed longer."
"You're having a baby in 10 weeks, I think that's excuse enough."
"You know, you would think so."
She quickly went through all of her measurements. I had always assumed that the appointments would be longer near the end, but they seemed to be shorter and shorter. I think at this point, they were mostly talk. And I was perfectly alright with that.
"Have you felt any of those Braxton Hicks yet?"
I shook my head. "No. I don't think so. Maybe I'm one of the lucky."
"That could be. Any questions?"
"Nope."
"See you in two weeks, then."
I went out to the receptionist, and made my appointment for the 19th. Daphne and I would probably have to come straight here after the spa, though.
I could hardly wait for our spa weekend. It felt like every inch of my body was sore, all because of the tiny person inside of me. My feet and back were the worse, and I couldn't do anything about either except to ask Emmett to rub them. Don't get me wrong, he certainly helped, but I had no doubt that I would feel a million times better after next weekend.
"Hey, let's stop off at the store before we go home."
'The actual store, or the baby store?'
"The baby one."
He grinned and got into the car. It wasn't long until we were parking and going inside. I had seen something else online that we didn't have yet, which seemed like a difficult task to accomplish at this point. It didn't take me long to find it, considering how often I seemed to be there, lately.
It was a strap on baby carrier. It was almost like a little baby back pack that strapped the baby to your front.
'Really? I didn't take you to be the kind to use this.'
"I don't think I am. I think you are."
Emmett grinned slightly as he thought it over. Pleased with myself, I made my way to the clothes. It was slightly harder to buy clothes, now that we had nearly a full wardrobe and still didn't know the baby's gender. It didn't mean I didn't like to look, though.
Emmett soon found me, the baby back pack tucked under his arm. 'Ready to go?'
I nodded and put down the tiny dress I had been looking at. We made our way up to the front, where Simone stood at the only open register. I braced myself and went to her.
She scanned our item, and quickly went through the motions of her job, not saying a word. Just like the last time I had been here, she didn't so much as look at me. I left the store as quickly as I could and got in the car.
When Emmett climbed in, he looked slightly confused. 'Did that strike you as weird?'
"Kind of. But she did it last time, too, so maybe she's just finally leaving us alone."
'Yeah... Maybe.'
He didn't seem completely convinced.
