A/N:

This one shot has been written as part of a challenge set by the lovely people over at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry (Challenges & Assignments). The task was to write about a person's relationship with an animal.

Chocolate Frog: Silver – Mirabella Plunkett – (Challenge) To write about relationship between a witch or wizard and another species.

Start of a beautiful friendship

Hagrid cradled the egg in his arms; according to the book that he had borrowed from the Hogwarts library it was almost time for it to begin to hatch. He stroked the large spherical egg softly with two of his beefy fingers, and softly sang an adaptation of a lullaby he loved to it as he strolled around the Hogwarts grounds.

"Hush little eggy don' say a word

Daddy wants you to crack

Bu' not too soon

And if tha' little shell should break

Daddy's gonna give you a big ol' smile."

The other children in the courtyard gave Hagrid strange looks, but this had happened to him so often in the past that he barely even registered them.

A sudden but not at all unexpected cracking woke Hagrid in the middle of the night.

He reached down under his bed and withdrew his acromantula egg from there and quickly examined it. So far there were only a few hairline cracks visible, which met that the hatching process had only just begun, and according to his book on acromantula that meant there should be a minimum of half an hour left before it would be completely hatched.

Hagrid carefully placed his egg back into the box under his bed, and as quickly and quietly as he could changed into his muggle clothing, and whisked his acomantula off to be hatched.

"Aragog, I think I'll call you Aragog," he cooed as he greeted the magnificent creature into the world. "Would you like tha'?"

The acromantula looked up at Hagrid and blinked, which Hagrid took to mean yes.

"I thought you would. I'm Hagrid by the way, I'm your new friend," he whispered sweetly to the spider, placing the palm of his hand flat on the table, hoping that Aragog, the spider he had incubated and looked after for the last six weeks would come to him.

The baby acromantula hesitated for a few moments before scuttling onto Hagrid's hand and settling down.

"This is the star' o' a beau'iful frien'ship," Hagrid whispered to the spider as he stroked him.

"Here you go Aragog," Hagrid said quietly to the acromantula who he was currently housing in an abandoned, unused cupboard. "Sorry it's no' much, but this rat was the best I could get."

He placed the rat in the corner of the cupboard and Aragog rushed to attack it like a rabid dog, tearing it limb from limb until there was nothing left except for the bones.

"Thank you Hagrid," Aragog said to the overlarge third year.

A blinding light shone from behind them and Hagrid turned around, and saw none other than the fifth year prefect Tom Riddle.

"I found you a new home," Hagrid announced brightly to the acromantula who had been living in his brand new hut on the Hogwarts grounds for the last week. "The Headmaster has even granted me permission to get you a mate."

Aragog looked at Hagrid directly in the eye. Over the last week he had grown exponentially and he was now almost as tall as the newly expelled boy. "Thank you my friend. Where will I be living?"

Hagrid grinned broadly at his best friend, and led him to the window of his hut. "You'll be livin' in there. I'll be able to come and visi' you whenever I like."

After night had fallen that night, the duo made their way into The Forbidden Forest, and found Aragog the perfect place to nest.

Hagrid kept his promises to his friend; he visited him the every evening after he had completed his duties, and before the end of the month he had found him a mate.
