We Made These Memories

'Have you got everything?'.

Elena looked at Caroline and Bonnie as they stood beside each other outside Mystic Falls General.

'Yes I have everything mum'.

Elena replied as Caroline and Bonnie laughed.

'Look it's a big day for you, it's your 1st day back in the fray as a medical student and we want to support you'.

Caroline told her friend.

'Yes I know and I love you both for it but I really didn't need the chaperones'.

Her eyes going to Elijah as he appeared out of know where.

'What are you doing here?'.

She asked him as he came closer to her.

'I just wanted to see you'.

'You saw me last night and we agreed that Caroline and Bonnie dropping me off would be enough and that I would see you tonight at the gallery'.

Elijah nodded remembering the arrangements they made.

'I know but I wanted to see you, it's a very important day for you'.

Elena sighed.

'Thank you all of you but I am about to go in and join a group of 2nd year medical students who are younger than me more smarter and I am already freaking out and having you guys here is making me more anxious so please I love you all but I can do this from here'.

Caroline and Bonnie nodded as they walked over to embrace Elena.

'We love you'.

Bonnie whispered and Elena nodded.

'I know I'll call you on my break'.

'You better'.

Caroline told her as they smiled at her before going back to Caroline's car leaving Elena with Elijah who took her hand.

'You have nothing to be anxious about'.

'Don't I, I'm a 23 year old medical student who dropped out 3 years ago and now thinks she can make it as a doctor, what was I thinking?'.

'You were thinking that you put your dreams on hold for everybody else and now it's time for you to do something for yourself'.

He looked at her and she sighed.

'Okay, will you walk me?'.

Elijah chuckled as he put his arm around her and walked her towards the hospital.

As they got to the entrance they stopped to make way for doctors and nurses that made their way inside and Elena sighed as she looked towards the double doors and then back at Elijah.

'Go start the first day of the rest of your life'.

She nodded as he leaned into kiss her, his lips lingering against hers.

'I believe in you'.

He told her as he held her hand for a moment giving it a comforting squeeze.

'Thank you, I'll see you tonight'.

She replied as he kissed her once more before letting go of her hand and stepping back from her as she sighed adjusting her bag on her shoulder and then headed towards the double doors looking back once more to see Elijah still standing in the same place with a reassuring smile.

'You can do this Elena'.

She told herself before turning away from Elijah and walking into the hospital.

'Here is the finalised list for tonight'

Klaus looked up as Greta walked into his office and placed the list on his desk.

'Thanks'.

He said with a yawn as Greta sat down.

'Long night'.

She asked and he nodded taking a sip of his coffee taking a look at the list.

'Something like that, this list looks great thank you for handling all of this'.

'Well considering you are going to be leaving this place and the gallery in my hands, I thought I better prove myself worthy'.

Klaus looked up from the list and smiled.

'You don't have to prove yourself you've done an amazing job of running this place in my absence and who else would I trust than you'.

'True, well I actually have to get downtown, is there anything you need me do here before I go'.

Klaus shook his head.

'No I'm fine you get out of here, I'll see you tonight'.

The first few hours had gone by pretty slowly for Elena as she found herself settled into being a hospital again after 3 years

It was overwhelming but she was now finding her feet much to her surprise.

She sat in the cafeteria a textbook open in front of her when a girl suddenly sat down opposite her.

'Elena Gilbert?'.

Elena closed the book looking up at the girl not recognising her face.

'Yes?'.

She answered

'I'm Hannah I used to hang around with Jeremy'.

She responded as if she was surprised Elena didn't know her.

'You know my brother'.

'Yeah me and Jeremy used to party together back in high school, how is he?

'Jeremy is good he's in Los Angeles'.

'LA wow so jealous, you know last I heard about you is that you went to New York'.

Elena nodded realising that as sweet as Hannah came across she was trying to intimidate Elena.

'I did for two and a half years'.

'Oh then why studying for the medical degree you should already have'.

'Okay Hannah I think you made your point'.

Elena looked as a guy stood behind Hannah.

'I'm just kidding Liam you really need to lighten up me and Elena go way back'.

She told him before walking off without another glance in Elena's direction.

'Sorry about her'.

Elena shook her head.

'Friend of yours?'.

She asked and he laughed.

'No, no friend of mine, I'm Liam'.

Elena smiled shaking his outstretched hand.

'Elena, thanks for getting rid of our mutual friend'.

Liam laughed before glancing at the clock.

'Don't worry about it, I better get back otherwise I'll have people looking for but I'm sure I'll being seeing you around'.

Klaus stared at the photographs, it had been years since some of them where even taken, he could remember the emotions he felt when he took them and the stories behind them and then there where the ones he had taken of her without her even knowing that he had snapped an image of a moment that he wish had lasted forever.

Covering back up the images that would be unveiled to those he held closest to his heart later that evening as he heard footsteps behind him and turned to smile at Kol.

'Well done brother, Congratulations on what will only be another success for you'.

Kol told Klaus clapping his hands together while Noah gnawed on a teeth ring.

'You're congratulating me early, you still have a few hours to practice a speech'.

'No speech I'm afraid Noah's teething and leaving him with a sitter is out of the question but Bonnie deserved a night out, she's with him all the time she needs a night of freedom.

So tonight it will be me trying to get him to sleep for more than 5 hours'.

Klaus looked from Kol to Noah who stared back at Klaus.

'You not sleeping buddy'.

Klaus asked as he unbuckled Noah from his stroller and picked him up which made Noah laugh as Klaus tickled his stomach with his finger.

'How is Bonnie?'.

Klaus asked as he went to sit down on a set of steps bouncing Noah on his knee.

'She's good, she's looking for her mum'.

'Her mum?'.

Kol nodded as he sat beside Klaus.

'Yeah we talked about a few weeks back and she has questions that need answering and the only person that can answer is her mum'.

'How do you feel about potentially meeting your mother in law?'

'It doesn't matter how I feel about her, Bonnie has lived her whole life not knowing her mother and if she can find her again it's all that matters.

She deserves the truth after all this time it's owed to her, I offered to hire a private detective but she turned me down'.

'Don't be offended Kol'.

'I'm not I know she has to do this alone, I wished she let me help her'.

'Uncle Elijah'.

Alexa exclaimed as she ran to Elijah who smiled as he his niece ran to embrace him.

'Alexa what did I tell you about running'.

Rebekah called after her as she closed the car door and took Lexi's hand.

'You told me no running in the house'.

Alexa called back as she squeezed Elijah who chuckled and Rebekah just rolled her eyes at her daughter's sassiness.

'I don't know where she gets it from'.

Rebekah said as Elijah ruffled Alexa's hair and then kissed his sister on the cheek.

'I wonder, Hello Lexi'.

He said leaning down to kiss Lexi's cheek who beamed at him.

'Hello Uncle Elijah is it true that Aunty Elena is going a be a doctor?'.

She asked and Elijah nodded taking his niece's hand as they walked into the house.

'It's true she is learning to be a doctor'.

'She'll be a very pretty doctor'.

Lexi replied and he nodded in agreement.

'That she will'.

He replied while Rebekah looked ahead keeping an eye on Alexa.

'Granddaddy'.

Alexa said in delight as Henry came into her view much to Rebekah's surprise as she turned to look at Elijah.

'You didn't tell me he was here?'.

She said hitting his arm and Elijah chuckled.

'I was under the strictness instructions not to let anyone know'

Elijah replied as Henry approached them.

'I can't believe you're here'.

Rebekah said hugging Henry who chuckled into her ear.

'Well you better believe it my dear I am going to be here for a while'.

He told her stepping back from her and looking at Lexi.

'Lexi you've grown'.

'I grew 2 inches'.

She said proudly which made them all laugh.

'Are you here alone, please tell me that you didn't make this trip alone?'.

Rebekah asked hand on her hip and Henry shook his head.

'Do you think my daughter's would let me make this journey alone, Charlotte is with me for the duration of my trip, she's currently exploring at the moment but she will be at Nikklaus's opening'.

'Does Nik know you're here?'.

'No, I made arrangements to visit after he called and told me of his and Caroline's news, another set of twins in this family it's a true blessing'.

Elijah and Rebekah both nodded.

'You must be so happy for your brother'.

Rebekah nodded.

'I'm overjoyed for the both of them and annoyed at myself for not noticing when Caroline was pregnant with Lydia I knew before she even told us but this time it was a complete surprise but the best surprise just like you being here'.

Every mother's wish for their child was for their lives to be filled with happiness and that was what Liz had always wanted for her daughter for Caroline to be happy and Caroline was a very happy child even when sadness came into the lives of those around her Caroline had always remained optimistic.

There was times when Liz saw her daughter's happiness fade away during her relationship with Tyler, Liz watched her normally so secure in herself daughter doubt herself and then when they broke up.

Liz lost her daughter for a while but then someone entered her life who made a smile and while Liz wasn't so sure about this person at first his age being the main reason for his concern.

He proved himself to exactly the kind of man she dreamed her daughter would find and as time went on she watched their relationship.

She was there with her late husband when he asked their daughter to be his wife and she was there when their daughter came into the world.

Klaus Mikaelson had made her daughter the happiest person on the planet and she was truly thankful for every moment that they spent together and the blessings that he had brought into her life.

'Good job everyone I will see you all bright and early Monday have a good weekend'.

The doctor said nodding at the class before leaving them to go about their evenings.

'Hey Liam'.

Elena waved as she spotted Liam who broke away from the group he was talking to approach her.

'Elena how was your first day back in the fray as a med student'.

'It's lot harder than I remember but it was good, so you're a resident'.

Liam nodded.

'What gave me away?'.

'Your clothes'.

He looked down and laughed.

'They would actually I was on my way to change my day is finally over, you know a couple of us our going to this bar if you to join'.

'I can't I have plans thanks for the offer'.

'Don't worry about it'.

'Who's that?'.

Caroline asked Lydia who stopped dancing as she heard the front door open walking quickly into the hallway.

'Daddy'.

Klaus smiled as Lydia ran towards full of excitement to see him.

'Hello Lydia'.

He said as he picked her up.

'Daddy'.

She said flashing him a smile as she put her small arms around his neck and he kissed her cheek.

'Mum'.

Caroline smiled as Lydia ran back into the living room waving at her before going back to her toys.

'Hey you'.

Caroline whispered as Klaus helped her stand.

'Thanks'.

'Tell me you haven't been packing all day?'.

He asked touching her cheek and she shrugged slightly.

'Only Lydia's room'.

Klaus shook his head.

'Caroline I hired movers so that you wouldn't have to lift a finger, I want you well rested'.

He told her as he stroked her cheek.

'I'm okay besides I'm not ready to start nesting I still have a few months'.

She replied kissing him as she stroked his cheek.

'You look tired'.

'Exhausted but after tonight it will be worth it'.

He replied with a soft sigh as she ran her fingers through his hair.

'It will be worth it'.

'So how was it your 1st day?'.

Bonnie asked Elena as they stood staring at a photo.

'Good, I made a friend Liam and a not so friend Hannah she used to hang out with Jeremy?'.

'I remember her blonde and boobs'.

'Well you'll be glad to know nothing has changed'.

'I'm not surprised I wasn't exactly a fan, she is the reason we broke up?'.

'That's her, oh I should have slapped her?'.

Bonnie laughed.

'No you shouldn't have it's in the past and I'm a lot happier with Kol'.

'I know but still I should have slapped her?'

'Slapped who?'.

Elijah asked as he appeared behind Elena, arm coming around her waist as he kissed the back of her neck.

'Nobody important'.

She told him as she turned to face him.

'Hey I'm sorry I didn't call you'.

'Don't be silly did you enjoy it?'.

'Yeah, it was hard you know but I didn't expect it to be easy but I'm slowly getting my bearings again'.

'You should be very proud of your brother'.

Rebekah smiled at Henry's words as they looked around at the photographs, someone Rebekah was surprised to see moments she didn't even know had been caught on camera.

'I am Nikklaus never ceases to amaze me'.

She replied as she smiled at a picture of two babies sleeping, two babies she called her daughters.

'There are you I haven't seen you all day?'.

Rebekah turned to look at Stefan.

'Sorry about that Stefan, she's been entertaining her old grandfather'.

Stefan looked at Henry.

'Ah well if that's where she's been who am I to complain it's good to see again Henry'.

Stefan shook the older man's hand.

'You too, I actually read one of your short stories or should I say Lexi read it to me'.

'Ah my little reader, she's my inspiration'.

Stefan said with a smile.

'She is very proud of her dad, we all are'.

Rebekah told Henry who nodded.

'As they should be'.

'Have you seen this?'.

Rebekah asked Stefan looking at the photo and he laughed.

'No but I think Klaus just made his first sale of the night'.

'Look at all these people here to see your hard work, I'm so proud of you baby its perfect'.

Klaus looked at her raising her hand to his lips and kissing it.

'I just want them to like the work'.

He asked her and she nodded.

'I don't think you need to worry about that, look at all these people they are here because of your talent'.

He looked around the place full of familiar faces, local photographs whose work had become part of this and then he looked at her.

'I have something I want to show you, come on?'.

She smiled as he took her hand and led her to another section of the gallery that had been cornered off filled with pictures of people she recognised and others she didn't.

'What's this?'

Caroline asked he stood her in front of a picture that had been covered up and she stared at him as he pulled away the cover.

'Oh my god'.

She gasped as she stared at the picture and then looked at Klaus.

'I know you miss your dad more now than ever and we all have people we miss and I thought that this would be the best way to keep their memories alive'.

She followed his gaze as he stared at another picture

It was more a collage of photos of Klaus and his siblings but the focus seemed to be on another child who had curly brown hair, the warmest brown eyes and the happiest smile.

'He was such a happy child'.

Klaus and Caroline both turned to stare at the familiar voice.

'Henry'.

Klaus looked at Henry as he walked over to Caroline wiping a tear from her cheek with a soft smile.

'I'm sure your father wouldn't want you to cry, he would want you to be happy just as imagine he is for the two lives growing inside you'.

Caroline smiled hugging Henry.

'You look beautiful'.

'What are you doing here?'.

Klaus asked as he embraced Henry.

'I'm here to see my family, you didn't expect me not to visit after you called to tell me your news.

I have missed out on so much in my grandchildren's lives I don't intend to do that anymore'.

Henry said his eyes going from Klaus to Caroline.

'There she is, I find myself stunned by her beauty even now'.

Caroline looked at the picture of the woman she didn't know but saw the resemblance to Rebekah and smiled.

'She has beautiful eyes'.

'Those eyes are what made me fall in love with her'.

Henry replied looking at Klaus as he kissed the side of Caroline's head.

'She would have loved this night, what you've done here'.

For the rest of the evening Caroline talked with people who approached her congratulating her on the pregnancy and then talking about the photography.

When she wasn't being spoken to or speaking she would just watch Klaus as he spoke with potential buyer and acquaintances.

He would catch her staring and would wink in her direction as she stood by and watched him do what he had worked so hardly toward.

Bonnie couldn't believe that the house was in silence when she walked through the front door closing it quietly behind her.

Taking of her heels as not to make any unnecessary noise.

Walking past the living room to find Kol laying on the floor with Noah fast asleep on his bare chest.

Smiling for a moment at the scene before her as she slowly picked up Noah cradling him to her chest as he started to stir but the slow rocking motion of her arms soothed him back to slumber as she carried him upstairs and put him down in his cot.

'Hey you, wake up'

Kol opened his eyes as he felt lips brush his cheek and stared up at Bonnie with a half-smile.

'Hey, you're back early'.

He asked sitting up with a yawn and she nodded.

'I know but I missed my boys and then I came home to find you both sleeping and you looked so peaceful I didn't want to disturb you, I put Noah down, how was he tonight?'.

'He was a little ratty but other than that he was good'.

He replied as he ran his hand through his hair before yawning again.

'How was the opening?'.

'Good Klaus did a really good job, he has this whole memorial section for people we known and lost it was really beautiful but we can talk about it in the morning, let's get you to bed'.

Her hand resting on his chest as she leaned into kiss him playing with his ruffled hair as she kissed him.
