Robin, Lucina, Chrom, Sumia, Morgan and Tiki gathered around for dinner and instead of the usual tradition to throw a feast for such an esteemed guest, the meal was very humble for its circumstances. An eight ounce steak, cooked potato, corn, and a salad for the Exalt due to Sumia's insistence were the only things that filled each persons plate while Morgan tried to steady her courage.
The memories Tiki had uncovered were not pleasant, and the ones that were slowly unlocking in her brain made it more difficult, but what really frightened her was how her parents would react. She knew her father wouldn't go along with the plan, and getting him to agree would be nearly impossible, but she had to find a way.
"It will be okay Morgan." Tiki smiled encouraging.
"Right." She took a deep breath and looked around to see her parents and grandparents watching her with much interest. She told them she had regained some of her memories, but where to begin proved to be nearly impossible.
...
"... I'm sixteen years old and I was born on May 5th. However, I come from 19 years in the future."
"19 years?" Robin asked mystified as he and Lucina looked back at each other puzzled.
Tiki glanced back at the couple and said delicately, "There is one other side effect to your ailment I did not wish to mention because I feared it might discourage you. "
"But I thought the spell you placed on Robin was suppose to prevent the curse from hurting him anymore?" Sumia asked the regal dragon as she suddenly lost her appetite.
"That is correct, but it can not undo the damage that he has already suffered from the curse."
"Damage?" Lucina asked afraid.
Tiki chose her words carefully sensing this was an uncomfortable subject for them, "Robin's ability to produce a child has significantly diminished. When the curse was summoned, Grima impaired Robin's seed count and his power to develop more. He intended to end Robin's legacy without giving him a chance to have an heir succeed him. Effectively killing him and any chance of his ability to affect future generations."
"Are you saying I'm … infertile?" Robin stammered speechless.
"Nearly." Tiki glanced back to the younger tactician respectfully. "While not impossible, the chances of your surviving seed fulfilling its purpose are extremely low."
"Which is why, it took three years for us to have Morgan ..." Robin repeated on the verge of losing his voice.
"... That would explain why I haven't shown any signs of morning sickness." Lucina whispered even lower than her husband.
Chrom grimaced the most uncomfortable out of everyone and tried to keep his thoughts on the task at hand before his brain was scarred forever thinking about it.
Morgan thankfully aided his wish and said, "After I was born many wonderful years went by with all four of you by my side. However, looking back, I noticed my father became more fatigued as time passed by."
"My shield was wearing off." Robin said very grimly and grabbed his wife's hand.
"... But you made it past fifteen years father." Morgan said while clutching her hands trying to be brave. "Like always you exceeded everyone's expectations."
Robin lowered his head in guilt hearing the pain in her voice and gripped Lucina's hand tighter as he gritted his teeth.
"When I was fourteen, our mages and scholars found a cure. After seventeen years of battling the curse, everything was finally going to be okay because we could finally end everything." She shook her head in despair. "It was such a simple solution no one even thought of it. After all, it couldn't really be that easy right?"
"Morgan." Lucina replied compassionately trying to find a way to console her.
"All we had to do is transfer the curse to someone else and have them fight it. It was just a theory, but if someone with a strong heart and a powerful will took your place than there was chance they could expel it. The curse was specifically targeted for you so if it occupied a different host it would not be as effective in subduing it."
"Unfortunately, there is a grave risk to this method." Tiki informed the other four to give Morgan some time to regroup. "If the person receiving this curse is not strong enough to overcome the transfer, both Robin, and the person taking the curse would die instantly from the shock."
Robin immediately grimaced in deep pain as already had a good idea of how this story ended.
…
Morgan sighed as her hands slowly trembled while looking at Lucina in her eyes. "The moment we learned of this method you volunteered without hesitation. Of course, father refused because he didn't want to risk taking you with him." Morgan sniffed and rubbed her right eye. "But he was so sick that he couldn't fight you off as well. It took over three months of begging and pleading with countless tears, but you managed to convince him."
Neither of the two knew what to do as they sat their frozen like a block of ice. While they wanted to jump from their seats or find some way to ease the pain in Morgan's eyes, they couldn't do anything other than stay tethered to their wooden confines stunned.
Luckily, Tiki quickly saved Morgan the pain of recalling any more memories and said, "The power the curse obtained from Robin's life force was too great by the time the transfer was made. No doubt with both of you distraught over the many years that this affected your family, not even Lucina herself was able to bear such a great burden. I doubt even if the two of your were at full strength the process could of worked because the curse had so much time to grow. The only good news I can bring is that your shared end would have been quick and relatively painless.
…
"So for the next two years my grandparents raised me." Morgan looked over to both Sumia and Chrom who were equally horrified of this story. "They took care of me while I missed you two very much. ... I never blamed either of you two for leaving me because I know why it happened, but knowing didn't help ease the pain that I would never see you two again." Morgan closed hers eyes trying bitterly to remain strong. She kept yelling to herself that she had to ignore these feelings. She had to be strong like her mother was, yet she couldn't seem to be like her no matter how hard she tried.
When Morgan reopened her eyes she saw her parents kneeling down on both sides of her as if they had been there the whole time and not in the two empty seats they were once in. Morgan quickly felt her mothers soft fingers remove the tears falling down her cheeks and her father's hand on her shoulder while she braced herself struggling to keep going.
"But the curse hasn't had time to build its power yet." She replied back with a new resolve. "It would be different if we did it today."
"...There could still be a chance it would fail." Robin said dryly fearing for his wife's safety.
"No." Tiki replied softly. "With the right host the transfer will be preformed without any risk to you Robin. You would survive this endeavor if we were to use it while the curse is weak. You would be able to live a life never having to fear the curse again."
"That's wonderful news!" Chrom cried out in rejoice.
"It's too good to be true." Robin muttered back skeptically.
Tiki was about to speak up again when Morgan quickly spoke, "But it really is that simple! You would be back to the smiling tactician you keep describing in your stories with mother. All you have to do is accept the transfer with me!"
"With you?!" Robin instantly cried alarmed as the thought of putting his daughter at risk was unthinkable.
"Yeah! That way mother doesn't have to get involved." She yelled excitedly. "I am the daughter of the two strongest people the world has ever known. I am the perfect candidate for the transfer. So let's go ahead and do it now! Tiki can start whenever you say you are ready!"
"Morgan, I could never put you at risk." Robin called back almost immediately as he cried out in alarm.
"Didn't you hear Tiki?" Morgan cried excitedly. "There is no danger of the transfer failing! You will be back to normal and my time will be averted. So let's hurry up an do it!" She cried out emphatically and grabbed her father's hand like she wanted to drag him to anywhere but here.
The anxious and hurried tone in her voice only made Robin's uncertainty even greater as he looked back up to the divine dragon. "I know my daughter enough to know that she is trying to hide something from me. What is it that she doesn't want me to know?"
"Nothing!" Morgan cried back immediately .
Her response was met by stares of disapproval from both Robin and Tiki which made her lower her head in shame. "Morgan is correct." Tiki nodded and looked back at Robin with great care. "The transfer would succeed because the curse could not resist the process with its current strength. However, it would be foolish to assume it comes without risks."
"How so?" Chrom inquired as confused as everyone else.
"Because whoever accepts the burden of taking the curse must also face it. While it is true the curse was specifically designed to attack Robin, it is still a very powerful and deadly hex to anyone who suffers from it. If your daughter was to accept it, she would have to battle the curse until she either beat it or succumbed to it."
"S-succumbed?" Lucina whispered in horror.
"As mentioned earlier, a person with an unwavering willpower and a strong heart is needed to survive this process. Not just for the transfer, but for fighting the curse once they receive it. If Morgan was to accept this responsibility than she would have to face the threat until she or the curse destroyed the other.
"Which wouldn't be a problem for me! I am your daughter after all." She cried urgently before Robin could absorb everything.
Tiki agreed and said, "My mother and future self must have also shared Morgan's opinion otherwise she would not have been sent back to this time. I realize that this is not an easy decision, but should you choose to accept it, I will do everything in my power to aid her in repelling the curse.
...
"No. Absolutely not. I refuse to accept that!" Robin cried in anger. "You are telling me that I should risk sacrificing my daughter to save my own life? What kind of a monster of a father would I be if I thought that was acceptable?!"
"Dad!" Morgan cried back in fear. "I'll be okay! I promise you I won't die. You always told me to keep my promises and I'll swear to you I will make it through!"
"I will not allow it." Robin gripped his fists tightly with a look in his eye that could kill. "I don't know what kind of sick joke this is, but to even think you could try to convince me of such an unforgivable act is insulting."
"But you will die if I don't do this!" She pleaded desperately. "Besides! Think of mom and future Morgan. What would it be like for them if they had to see you suffer?!"
"This is not up for discussion." He commanded ferociously with looks that petrified anyone who dared face his direction. "The fact that I am responsible for my wife's death in the future is already reason enough to damn me to hell. I will not take my daughter with me as well."
"Would you rather die a slow and painful death and force me to watch it a second time?" She replied feebly and clutched her hands so tightly that her nails dug into her skin.
"If you don't want to see me like that then I will more than glad to remove myself." He yelled angrily and stormed off to the exit as he passed by all the royal members in the family. Once he got to the door he violently slammed it shut behind him as a deafening sound pierced the ears of anyone within a thousand yard radius. With Robin gone, all that was left of his presence was a broken lock and severe damage to the wood around the hinges that threatened to turn the door into a floor mat.
...
Meanwhile, the five people left in the room dropped to absolute silence. Morgan was clearly the most horrified, but Lucina came in a close second. As a mother, she completely understood and agreed with Robin on his reaction. She would never let her daughter do that for her either, but at the same time, she was once prepared to die for her own father. Was the cycle she endured really to repeat itself with Morgan as Grima said his last goodbye to the Exalted family?
"Tiki." Chrom shook his head and said in horror. "I understand you mean well, but do you truly understand what you are asking of him?"
"I do." The Divine dragon nodded delicately. "However, I would never have allowed this conversation to take place if I thought there was a high chance of failure."
"If the chance is so low then why didn't you mention that to my father?!" Morgan exclaimed in horror.
"Because any chance is too high to him. I would be insulting his responsibilities as a father if I pretended that the risks were not a factor."
"But still! You could have told him I would have been safe! It would have made it so much easier." Morgan cried adamantly in frustration.
"Lying would only further complicate the matter. He would find out the answers eventually and he would never forgive himself if he tried it without knowing the risks." Tiki replied modestly.
"Well telling the truth got us nowhere." Morgan chastised and swiped her hand in the air with great fury. "My stupid father doesn't see the whole picture and wont listen to reason! We should have chained him to the table and forced him to accept it for his own good."
"That would only encourage him to resist more. It is best to approach this slowly and with great care."
"He will die first before we convince him that way" Morgan replied disheartened
…
"What if we use a prisoner instead of Morgan?" Chrom asked in deep thought. "It is not a sacrifice if we use someone who is already scheduled to be executed."
Tiki quietly sighed and said, "Someone of that character would not have the willpower or heart to initiate the transfer and the backlash might inadvertently kill Robin. That is why Morgan would be the ideal choice for this situation."
"I could do it" Lucina replied back knowing that she could succeed this time around.
"No mom." Morgan shook her head somberly. "It has to be me. I won't let you or father ever suffer from him again. I have had a lot of time to prepare for this and I know what to expect. Naga showed me what to do before she would let me return to this time."
"The difficult part will be convincing Robin to accept this method." Tiki looked back to the royal family to say, "That is why I called everyone here today. You four being the people he trusts the most, only you could convince him to change his stance on such a difficult decision."
"I don't know." Chrom grimaced with doubt. "If I was put in the same situation with either of my daughters I would do exactly what Robin just did. They mean so much to me that I would rather die than put them in harm's way."
"Father..." Lucina called back and lowered her head in shame.
"Hmph, well I say we force him to accept the transfer or I will personally beat it out of him!" Sumia cried in a fury of determination as she smashed her fist on the table.
"Huh?!" The three blue headed royals cried back in shock.
Sumia turned to her granddaughter whose eyes widened in surprise as the pegasus knight asked very sweetly. "Morgan, you are ready and willing to do this correct?"
"Of course." She answered softly.
"Then I will do everything in my power to help convince him." Sumia cried adamantly and full of compassion. "I swear it to you Morgan."
"Sumia?" Chrom's whispered in disbelief.
His wife turned to him and said, "This does not sit well with me either. But if Naga, Tiki, and my own granddaughter think it is possible, then I will not deny her the opportunity. I trust her the same way I trusted Lucina."
"It is not that simple." Chrom shook his head in distress.
"I also seem to remember a certain someone who wanted me to stay home when they wanted to go off to war." Sumia sneered and reminded him of the unrelenting side of her. "It sounds like the risks were much higher for me at that time than it is for Morgan now.
"... I know, but you can not blame a man for wanting to protect the ones he loves." Chrom defended with his wavering resolve.
"And that is why we must be the ones to convince him." Sumia replied calmly. "As much as I feared for my own daughter's safety, I knew she would make it because she has our skills and warm nature. Something that was certainly passed down to Morgan as well. I know with all of my heart she can beat this curse if given the opportunity."
"Thank you Sumia." Morgan replied grateful. "It means a lot to know someone trusts in me."
"I trust in you too Morgan." Lucina grimaced and shook her head in sorrow with so many different feelings conflicting her. She had never expected to be on the other side of this situation, and seeing Morgan so resolute reminded her of her old self. She knew those feelings Morgan was feeling all too well, and her unyielding determination was just as strong as hers once was. "But I share your father's sentiments."
"It isn't as bad as it sounds mom. I will get through it, and I promise I'll still be here at the end." She pledged with her heart firmly planted on her chest.
"All I need is the chance."
…
A few hours later.
Lucina sighed with great regret when she found Robin. He was on the outskirts of the city watching the ducks play in a small pond while he sat on the grass with his back turned to the distant city and the setting sun. His head was tilted towards the sky and a great trance befell his thoughts.
It was not an unfamiliar spot to either of them though. Lucina once mentioned that this was a place she found the first time she traveled back to this time and she was lost by how beautiful it looked. It was so different from her world that she had trouble believing it existed. And ever since it has been their safe haven. One that they shared whenever they wished to be alone with each other. Though, today Robin just wanted be alone to himself.
"Robin?" She asked quietly with great compassion in her voice.
The tactician's reflexes instantly sent him into defensive mode as his muscles stiffened and he clutched his hands tightly. "I was afraid you might find me here."
"It doesn't matter where you would have gone. I would have found you." She replied sweetly which made Robin give a faint smile for a brief second.
"You always did have an act for tracking me down."
"Because it meant I got to see you." She smiled and moved over to sit besides him next the the calming pond and floating ducks.
Robin shook his head hysterically with a smile on his face. "I'll never understand why I am so lucky to be with you."
"I could say the same." She replied and leaned over so their shoulders were touching,
"... I'm sorry." His voice cracked and regret washed over his face. " I am so very sorry."
"What for?" Lucina asked concerned seeing him so distraught.
"I took you with me." He sighed and flinched like a blunt needle was jabbed in his side. "The transfer failed and I am responsible for your death."
"You can't think of it like that Robin. It was Grima who placed the curse on you and I knew the risks before we began."
Robin shook his head and said, "Either way, I don't understand why the world keeps trying to save me. I wasn't suppose to come back after I died, and even now I am being offered an opportunity to keep living at a tremendous price. When you think about who I was supposed to be, that is reason enough for me to be killed. So why do I keep getting another chance?"
"Because the world wasn't fair to you Robin. You don't deserve any of the troubles you suffered."
"Neither did you." He muttered lowly.
"And yet here we are. The two of us." Lucina smiled and placed her hand on his lap.
"...Yeah."
She looked back at him warmly and said, "I'm glad that we went together. It would have been very painful without you."
Robin grimaced and said, "I just wish it would have been a lot longer before it happened."
"I'm sure that we were very happy though. I doubt either of us had any regrets as the last days neared."
"No regrets." Robin repeated and wrapped his arm around her back. "Not a one."
Lucina leaned her head so it rested on his shoulder. "I am afraid I am a terrible mother though. Deep in my heart I want to have more years with you even though I know the costs."
Robin remained silent and gritted his teeth.
Lucina shook her head and said, "I have no right to ask such a thing, and yet I do wish it despite how wrong it is. I guess that makes me an awful parent."
Robin sighed and said, "We are scared. It is only natural that both of us would have such horrible thoughts."
"...You too?" Lucina asked uncertain.
"For the last thirty minutes I've been trying to think of a different way." He shrugged hopelessly. "But I can't do it. Not to my daughter, or to you. I've lived my whole life without regrets and I don't want to start now."
"I understand." She called back and rested her weight on his body. "But I don't think our daughter will be so accepting of your decision.
"She is a lot like you at times." Robin trailed off. "Stubborn, but very beautiful and smart."
Lucina warmly grinned and kissed him on the cheek for his kind words. "And you are silver tongued as always."
"Does it taste like silver too?" He laughed lightly and grazed his hand across her back.
"No, it's much more precious." She responded lovingly.
"Ha, and you say that I am the one with all the lines." He laughed again and kissed her on the forehead.
"So what is our plan?" Lucina asked quietly.
"I planned on holding you for awhile." He replied very gently. "But if you are referring to the curse, I will have to thank Tiki for the offer and respectfully decline. It just isn't something I can do with a clean conscious."
