Chapter Twenty-Three: She may not age, but that doesn't mean she doesn't expect a party...
23. Birthday Wishes
It was impossible to surprise Alice.
Seriously.
She smiled to herself as her birthday began in exactly the way she'd known it would.
"Happy birthday, Darlin'." Jasper said, bringing out the southern accent he knew Alice loved as he handed her a carefully wrapped present. It was a bracelet; Alice knew that long before she ripped off the paper. It was a delicate silver bracelet, dotted with leaves and flowers made from tiny diamonds and strung together with silver stems. Jasper secured it around her wrist and she smiled as she saw it sparkling in the sunlight.
"I thought we were making each other presents this year." Alice lightly scolded with a laugh, remembering the agreement they'd made.
"I did make it." Jasper said. He chucked as he felt Alice's surprise, "Well, I designed it anyway. They made it at the jewellers."
"It's beautiful, I love it!" She said, "Even if you did cheat!"
"I'm glad." He said, kissing her cheek, "Come on, Darlin', we're going shopping."
"You're taking me out so they can prepare my surprise party?" Alice asked with a laugh.
Jasper tutted and rolled his eyes, "You've been peeking!"
"Nope! I heard Em and Edward talking about it." Alice confessed. Jasper rolled his eyes again. It was hard enough keeping things secret from Alice without those morons giving it away.
"Come on," He said, getting out of bed and pulling Alice into his arms, "Get dressed and lets go. You promise to at least act surprised?"
"I promise." She said, slipping out of Jasper's arms and walking into her closet. She'd already picked out the perfect birthday outfit; a strapless purple top, a white ruffled skirt, and a pair of killer black heels. She gave Jasper a twirl and he nodded approvingly, holding out his arm for Alice to take. She took it and they skipped down the stairs.
"Happy birthday, sweetheart." Esme greeted them downstairs.
"Thank you, Esme." Alice said with a brilliant smile, "One hundred and thirteen today!"
"She doesn't look a day over nineteen." Jasper joked, kissing Alice's temple.
"She doesn't look a day over fourteen." Emmett said with a smirk, appearing beside Alice. "Happy birthday, Shortie."
Alice pouted and pushed him away from her, "You're not allowed to be mean to me on my birthday."
"We're going out shopping." Jasper said, "We should be gone for a few hours."
Esme smiled and nodded, "Have fun!"
First Alice dragged Jasper to a shop where she knew she'd find a super cute purse. The few hours after that were spent dashing from store to store picking up countless items that caught Alice's attention. Jasper loyally followed her around like a puppy dog, carrying all her shopping bags and not blinking an eye as she handed over credit card after credit card.
Jasper sat Alice down on a bench by the mall fountain, "Wait right here, I have to pick up the rest of your present."
"'Kay!" Alice said with a smile, watching as Jasper left to pick up the huge bunch of flowers she's foreseen last week. Whilst she waited, she lay back on the bench and looked up at the mall ceiling, thinking about her birthday last year. Jasper had booked them a trip to Africa, and Alice had spent the majority of the time sunbathing despite not being able to get a tan. She'd ridden an elephant and led with lions - although she had eaten the lions shortly after. She'd declared it the best birthday she'd ever had.
She said that every year.
Right on queue, Jasper appeared above her, holding a huge bouquet of flowers. There were pink and white roses, mixed in with white bouvardia. Alice smiled; over the years bouvardia had become their flower. The first time he'd presented it to her had been the first birthday he'd known her. It was before they'd met the Cullens, they didn't have a lot of money and Jasper still didn't go amongst humans very often. He'd gone into the forest near where they were living and picked a small bunch of white bouvardia. They weren't spectacular flowers, in fact they were rather plain, but Alice had been overjoyed. It was the first time anyone had ever given her flowers.
Over the years, he'd given her the flowers on each and every birthday that passed. They'd come a long way since that first posy of wild flowers - now being mixed in with eccentric roses and lilies and violets - but Alice still loved that very first bouquet the most.
When they finally got home, Jasper paused in the driveway, "Remember to act surprised."
"Uh-huh." Alice said, itching to get inside. Despite the surprise party not being a surprise, she was super excited to arrive at her party. After one hundred and thirteen years of life, she never grew tired of parties.
The surprise party was a typical one; everybody hid and jumped out when Alice walked in, yelling "SURPRISE!" as loud as they could. There were balloons and banners, fairy lights, and food for Bella's sake. In the corner there was a pile of presents, wrapped in assorted colours even though Alice already knew what each of them were; a new dress from Rosalie, gorgeous earrings from Esme, the book she'd wanted from Carlisle. They were all gifts Alice already knew she'd love. She opened her presents, and the rest of the night was dedicated to dancing.
Alice grinned as Esme brought out a cake with eighteen candles on it - the age she was telling everyone in town she was turning this year. Bella would be left to eat the whole cake herself, but Alice loved the gesture anyway.
"You have to make a wish." Esme said with a smile.
"Wait!" Jasper said, "Before you do..."
He produced a small package and Alice gasped, "When did you..."
She thought back to when Jasper had given her the flowers...he'd been carrying a shopping bag with him too. One that hadn't been there before he'd left...Alice narrowed her eyes, "You tricked me."
"Open your present, Darlin'." He said.
She tore off the paper. Inside was a tiny silver photo frame, patterned with flowers which Alice soon realised were bouvardia. Inside the frame was a picture of Alice and Jasper on their wedding day. She smiled, "I love it." She looked up at Jasper and kissed him lightly on the lips, "I love you."
"I love you too." He told her.
Okay, maybe it wasn't impossible to surprise Alice, but it was damn hard! Good thing Jasper had had so long to practice.
"Make a wish, Darlin'."
Alice looked around at her family crowded around her, at Jasper right beside her, and as she blew out her eighteen candles, she wished that everything would stay the same.
