27. A Love Like War ~ Part 3
Alice signalled that Jasper should remain quiet as she heard a noise in the distance; footsteps. They were coming closer; two people. She strained her ears listening for a heartbeat. Nothing.
Then...ever so faintly, far of...a heartbeat. One heartbeat.
Two people, one heartbeat.
Grabbing Jasper's hand, Alice raced towards the people. Bursting into a clearing in the jungle, she came face to face with two people, both stood in defensive stances. A woman, looking to be around 20, short in stature, though taller than Alice. Her skin was pale but olive toned and she had thick black hair trailing down her back in a plait. Her eyes were burgundy, darting between Alice and Jasper in search of a potential threat. She had no heartbeat; vampire.
The other person was a man, only a little taller than the woman, who looked around 18. His skin was an impossible rich, dark olive colour, and his eyes the colour of warm teak. His hair was also black, braided to match the woman's, though it wasn't as long. He did not look as threatened as the woman appeared, though he seemed to be protective of her, standing in front of her and watching Alice and Jasper warily. In the silence that filled the clearing, his heartbeat could clearly be heard; hybrid.
"Please, don't be threatened." Jasper said, sending a discreet wave of calm and trust towards the two strangers, who immediately relaxed a little.
"My name is Alice Cullen, and this is Jasper Hale." Alice began, "We've come to ask for your help."
"Our help?" The man asked, curiosity clear in his voice, no doubt wandering what these strangers could possibly want his help in.
"We don't know who you are, but we know what you are." Jasper said. Both of the stranger's eyes widened.
"You are half vampire, half human, are you not?" Alice asked.
Slowly, the man nodded. "How did you know? What would make you think it was possible?"
Alice and Jasper looked at each other, "Our niece is like you."
Now the man really looked shocked, "There are others?"
Alice nodded, "Our brother fell in love with a human, and they married. She became pregnant, and we changed her after the baby was born. Their daughter, Renesmee, is a hybrid, like you are."
"The mother...she survived?" He asked.
Alice nodded again, "It was close, but we were able to change her in time."
"And what do you need my help with?" He asked after a pause.
"The Volturi have found out about her." Jasper said, "They believe that she is an immortal child, and they are coming to kill her, and the rest of our family."
"Even if they stop long enough for us to explain what she is - and even if they believe us - they will not leave." Alice said, "Aro is frightened of how large and powerful our family is becoming. He is going to claim that the child must die because we do not know if she will be a threat in the future."
"Alice can see the future." Jasper added in explanation.
"Except I cannot see the future of hybrids." Alice said, "Only vampires and humans." There was a pause, and then Alice continued, "If you were to come before the Volturi, you could show them that she will not be dangerous as she grows. You can prove she isn't a threat, and give our family a chance of survival."
"We know it's a lot to ask." Jasper said, "But all our lives depend on it. Our family does not deserve to die because they found a way to bring a child into the world."
There was another pause whilst the two strangers seemed to take it into consideration. Then, the man turned back to Alice and Jasper, "I am Nahuel, and this is my aunt, Huilen. We will help your family."
~o.O.o~
"I was born about one hundred and fifty years ago." Nahuel said as we walked, "My mother, Pire, was part of the Mapuche tribe, located in Chile. My father used to visit her in the woods at night. She thought him to be an angel. The tribe had legends about vampires - Libishomen, as they called them - and my aunt tried to warn my mother, to no avail. She became pregnant and, knowing that the tribe would kill her and me, she and my aunt ran away."
"My mother tried to find my father during her pregnancy, but she could not. My aunt took care of her until she gave birth, when...she died." Nahuel said, "I changed my aunt into a vampire on my first day of life, and when her transformation was over she brought me up. I reached full maturity seven years after my birth, and have not changed since."
"Did you ever find your father?" Jasper asked, and he sensed Huilen tense. From her reaction, he'd say that she was scared of Nahuel's father.
"My father's name is Joham." Nahuel said, "He believes he is creating a super-race with human-vampire hybrid children. He had two daughters before me with other human woman, and another daughter after me. Soon after my birth, he sent my eldest sister, Serena, to find me. I was supposed to join them, but my aunt chased Serena away. A few years later, my father came himself, asking me to join him and my sisters. I refused; I did not agree with his way of life. He taught my sisters to think of humans as animals; as food and nothing else. Something for our race to use for our own benefit. That was what he had done to my mother."
Nahuel was glaring at the ground now, and Alice touched his arm gently. He looked at her in surprise, clearly taken aback by her kindness and emotion. With the exception of Huilen, he disliked all vampires. He thought they were all cruel and unfeeling, much like his father. These two vampires, however, were different. They were trying to save their family's lives; they obviously loved each other dearly; and now...they were being so kind to him, so sympathetic.
"Serena is very like him in her way of thinking." Nahuel went on after a pause, "I am closer to Maysun, my second sister. She visits me sometimes, but I know it was only ever because Joham had sent her. He still wanted me, his only son, to join him, but I would not. My younger sister, Jennifer, and I are close, though. She visits often, and I've returned her visits several times, taking my aunt with me. I feel a protectiveness of her that I do not feel with my others sisters. I thought my sisters and I to be the only hybrids in existence; I thought Joham the only one who would create them."
"We didn't even know it was possible," Alice chipped in, quite brightly considering the circumstances, "But Bella became pregnant on her honeymoon. We thought Renesmee was the first ever hybrid."
They rounded the corner and the Cullen house came into view. Alice smiled brightly, "Here it is! Home! Come in and meet everyone; they're going to be so happy!"
"Alice," Jasper said gently, catching his wife's hand before she could dash into the house. She stopped and then realized why he'd paused. There was no sound coming from the house; there was no one home.
Alice's eyes glazed over and she gasped as she saw the start of her vision; two sides of the field, the Volturi on one, the Cullens and their allies on the other. "They're already there. The fight has already started."
~o.O.o~
As they raced towards the field where the battle would take place, Alice dipped in and out of visions. Edward was about to talk to the Volturi; Aro was about to read Edward's mind; Renesmee was about to project for Aro; Aro was about to make his speech, saying that hybrids could be a threat to our race.
"Hurry up!" Alice pleaded as her visions got closer and closer. The fight was about to start.
They were so close to the edge of the trees; so close to the clearing itself. All they could hear was silence. It echoed around the forest; hard, cold, silence.
Alice and Jasper broke through the trees into the clearing, and Nahuel and Huilen hung back in the shelter of the forest.
"Alice..." Edward whispered.
"Alice." Aro echoed.
As they walked across the field at a human pace, Alice looked over at her family and their allies. They were all watching her; some wandering why she'd left, some wandering why she'd come back. Some looked hurt, some looked angry, some looked relieved. Bella's eyes bored into Alice, and Renesmee watched in curiosity from Jacob's back. All Alice needed to do was give Bella a signal, and Renesmee would be out of there.
Sam was glaring at Alice, and she could feel what he was thinking; How could she leave her family like that.
She swallowed and looked away.
Before they could reach Aro, three guards slammed into them and held them back.
"My dear, dear Alice...we're so glad to see you here after all." Aro said, his smile sending chills down Alice's spine.
"I have evidence that the child won't be a threat to our kind." Alice told him, throwing as much confidence as she could into her words. The guards still held her strongly. Holding out her hand towards Aro, she spoke again, "Let me show you."
Aro nodded and the guards released her, still holding Jasper back as Alice strode towards Aro. He took her hand and looked deep into her eyes. Alice looked right back and she showed him the horrific vision that she never wanted to see again. She tried to stay calm as she watched Carlisle die, then Jasper, and then finally Aro.
Aro dropped her hand, a look of fear crossing his face as he looked down at the short vampire in front of him. "Now you know. That's your future." She looked at him, searching his eyes, "Unless you decide on a different course."
Caius stepped forward then, speaking to Aro, "We cannot alter our course. The child still poses a grave threat."
"But what if you were sure she could remain concealed from the human world?" Edward asked from across the clearing, his mind racing as he read Alice's thoughts and finally - finally - understood what her plan had been, "Could we leave in peace?"
"Of course," Caius said, "But that cannot be known."
"Actually it can." Edward said, his eyes trained on Alice. Alice nodded at him, an understanding passing between them. Then she made a slight gesture towards the forest, and Nahuel and Huilen came forward into the clearing, walking towards the Volturi with confidence.
As they reached Alice, she turned to the Volturi, "I've been searching for witnesses of my own."
"We have enough witnesses-" Caius began, but Aro interrupted.
"Let him speak, brother." Aro said calmly, seeing now that Alice was giving him a way out. An excuse to give to the Volturi to avoid the battle. Aro didn't want to die, but he knew he couldn't surrender without good cause.
"I am half human, half vampire." Nahuel said, addressing the Volturi, "Like the child."
He proceeded tell his story, and answer any questions that were asked of him. Finally, recognition began to cover the faces of the Volturi. They realized there was no threat; there need not be a fight.
"These children are much like us." Marcus said softly.
"Regardless, the Cullens have been consorting with werewolves." Caius said, the one member who seemed unwilling to let go of his fight, "Our natural enemies."
Aro placed a hand on Caius' shoulder, and turned to face his guard, "Dear ones, there is no danger here. We will not fight today."
The Volturi disappeared, a blur of black and red as they sped into the forest, away from the Cullens. Aro turned back, his eyes trained first on Alice, and then on Bella. "What a prize..."
Alice glared. Aro's attempts at getting them to join the Volturi would never succeed. Never.
He was gone before anyone could react to his words.
Alice collapsed into Jasper's arms; it was over, everyone was safe. He was safe.
He picked her up and spun her in his arms, kissing her lightly on the lips. They were safe. She was safe.
"You are all fools!" Stefan yelled.
"The Volturi may be gone, but they will never forgive what happened today." Vladimir said coldly.
Alice shook her head, letting out a light tinkling laugh. If the Volturi ever decided to come back, they'd be ready. There really was no tearing this family apart.
Everyone found themselves smiling then, laughing out of sheer happiness.
Alice grabbed Huilen and hugged her, whispering in her ear, "Thank you so much. Thank you for saving our family."
Huilen smiled, finding her distrust of other vampires melting away.
Then Alice returned to Jasper, and they held each other as if letting go was never an option, "Thank you, too. I never would have done this without you. I needed you."
"You're brilliant, Alice." He murmured, "You saved everyone. You don't need me, but we all need you."
He smiled down at her and she shook her head at him. She needed him more than he knew. But now wasn't the time to tell him that. Now wasn't the time for words. She clung onto him, a smile on her face. He was here. She was here. They were here, together, and that was never going to change.
~o.O.o~
Alice watched from the house as Jasper said goodbye to Peter and Charlotte. They waved up at her before disappearing into the forest. Jasper caught her eye and smiled. She smiled back, before turning and watching Renesmee. She was stood with Emmett and Rosalie, saying goodbye to Zafrina and Senna.
Then she turned her attention to Edward and Jacob. After years of hatred, they were accepting each other.
"Should I start calling you Dad?" Jacob was asking.
A smirk twitched at Edward's lips, "No."
Renesmee ran up to them, hugging Edward tight. Bella joined them too, and Renesmee touched her face gently, asking her a question. Bella smiled warmly, "Yes. We're all going to be together now."
Alice welcomed the vision that washed over her; Renesmee all grown up, on the beach with Jacob. Bella and Edward joined them; happy, together, a family. Breaking out of the vision, there was a smile plastered on Alice's face. As Edward read her thoughts, he found her smile to be infectious.
Looking around at her family, and all the friends that had come to help them, Alice knew that this fight had changed their lives forever. It had brought them all together in a way that no one had thought possible; covens from across the world, nomads, friends close and distant...they were all joined now. They were all family.
As Alice walked towards them, a smile bright on her face, she felt Bella's glare boring into her. With a sigh, she turned to her sister. "Just get it off your chest, Bella."
"How could you do that to me, Alice?" She asked, clearly hurt by Alice and Jasper's supposed abandonment of the family.
"It was necessary." Alice said simply.
"Necessary!" Bella exploded. "You had me totally convinced that we were all going to die! I've been a wreck for weeks."
"It might have gone that way," Alice said calmly, "In which case you needed to be prepared to save Nessie."
It was why Alice had left J. Jenks' address, so that Nessie could be safe no matter what the outcome had been. Luckily, it had been unnecessary.
"But you knew there were other ways, too," Bella accused. "You knew there was hope. Did it ever occur to you that you could have told me everything? I know Edward had to think we were at a dead end for Aro's sake, but you could have told me."
Alice looked at Bella for a moment. "I don't think so," She said. "You're just not that good an actress."
"This was about my acting skills?" Bella asked defensively. Alice rolled her eyes; couldn't Bella just understand?
"Oh, take it down an octave, Bella. Do you have any idea how complicated this was to set up? I couldn't even be sure that someone like Nahuel existed - all I knew was that I would be looking for something I couldn't see! Try to imagine searching for a blind spot - not the easiest thing I've ever done. Plus we had to send back the key witnesses, like we weren't in enough of a hurry. Before any of that, I had to try to see every trick the Volturi might come in with and give you what few clues I could so you would be ready for their strategy, and I only had just a few hours to trace out all the possibilities. Most of all, I had to make sure you'd all believe that I was ditching out on you, because Aro had to be positive that you had nothing left up your sleeves or he never would have committed to an out the way he did. And if you think I didn't feel like a schmuck-"
"Okay, okay!" Bella interrupted Alice's ramblings. "Sorry! I know it was rough for you, too. It's just that... well, I missed you like crazy, Alice. Don't do that to me again."
Alice's trilling laugh rang through the room. Beside her, Jasper smiled to hear that music once more. "I missed you, too, Bella. So forgive me, and try to be satisfied with being the superhero of the day."
Everyone else laughed now, and Bella ducked her face into Nessie's hair, embarrassed.
Then she looked back up at Alice, a seriousness in her eyes, "Thank you for coming back. You saved us all."
"Are you kidding? Of course I was going to come back." Alice said.
"You risked your life even though you'd seen what was likely to happen." Bella said.
"Well, we're a family." Alice said, "We go together, or we don't go down at all."
Soon after, Bella and Edward decided to take Renesmee back to their cottage. Bella turned before they left, addressing Jasper, "Oh, Jasper?"
"Yes, Bella?" Jasper asked.
"I'm curious - why is J. Jenks scared stiff by just the sound of your name?" She asked.
Jasper chuckled, "It's just been my experience that some kinds of working relationships are better motivated by fear than by monetary gain."
Bella frowned before leaving with Edward and Nessie. Alice rolled her eyes at Jasper's theory, but had to admit that it had made Bella's transaction a lot easier. Jasper looked down at her in his arms, "You didn't tell me you'd sent Bella to J. Jenks."
"It was a precaution." Alice said, "In case something went wrong, or we couldn't find Nahuel, she needed to get Nessie out of there." Jasper was frowning, "I only didn't tell you because I didn't want you to think I doubted the plan. We needed it to work, and I needed you to believe in it so you could keep me motivated."
Jasper pulled her closer to him and smiled, "You really had everything worked out, didn't you?"
Alice giggled and nodded, "Uh-huh."
"Anything else I should know?" He asked.
"Only that I love you." Alice told him, standing on tip toes so she could kiss him lightly on the lips.
"I love you too, Darlin'." He told her.
They had each other.
And now, they had forever.
A/N: So...the third and final part! A Love Like War is officially finished...this was so hard to write! Finding all the details and stuff, and then trying to imagine everything from Alice and Jasper POV...and imagine what they'd be doing in all the little bits of the story where Edward and Bella are doing other things. I hope I did this some justice?! If you liked it, leave me a review!
I don't know if there are other fanfics that do the BD battle from Alice/Jasper point of view...there probably is. If you know any, would you mind giving me the name so I can go check them out? I wanna see how other people interpreted it :)
ANYWAY...I'll be back next Monday (if not sooner) with another snapshot :) In the mean time...review ;)
