A/N: Heeyyyy again :) So in honour of The Fault In Our Stars coming out in cinemas this week in the US (even though I have to wait until the 19th here in England which is TOTALLY unfair! Anway...) I thought I'd do a snapshot based on a song from the soundtrack. So this is basically when Alice is away for a few weeks visiting friends in England and Jasper's at home without her...
Chapter Thirty-Two: All Of The Stars, by Ed Sheeran (TFIOS SOUNDTRACK)
It's just another night
And I'm staring at the moon
I saw a shooting star and thought of you
I sang a lullaby
By the waterside and knew
If you were here, I'd sing to you
You're on the other side
As the skyline splits in two
Miles away from seeing you
But I can see the stars
From America
I wonder, do you see them too?
32. All Of The Stars
"I'll be back really soon, I promise." Alice said down the phone that Jasper was hugging to his ear, "It's just a few more days."
"I miss you." Jasper told her.
"I miss you too." She replied with a sigh, "I miss home."
"Your Prada shoes arrived." Jasper said, picking at the grass on the bank he was sat on.
"Now I miss home even more." Alice said sadly. Jasper laughed gently, "I got you a present from London."
"You coming back is the only gift I need." He told her.
"I wish you were here with me." She said.
They'd discussed it, but decided it was a bad idea. Alice's friends lived with a human roommate who was more than accident prone, and neither of them had wanted to risk Jasper losing control - especially when England was just that much closer to the Volturi, who were already watching the Cullens for any slip up.
"I wish I was with you too." Jasper told her. He plucked a daisy from the ground and stared at it. It reminded him of her, and how she'd always thread them into chains to go round her wrist or in her hair.
There was a beeping down the line, "Damn, I'm on a payphone and I think it's running out."
"Don't you have more money?" Jasper asked.
"I can't tell," Alice said, and Jasper laughed as he heard her mutter, "Stupid British money...Look, Jazz, I'd better go. I'll call you tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay." Jasper said.
"Okay." Alice replied, and the line was silent for a while. When Alice spoke again, Jasper could tell she was about to cry, "I love you. Bye."
She hung up, and he lay back on the grass with a sigh. Another twenty four hours to kill before she could call him again.
The moon was almost full and the black night sky was filled with twinkling stars. Jasper hummed an old lullaby - one that Alice had taught him. He sang it to her when she was upset or hurt or angry. He'd sing it to her now, if she were here.
A star shot across the sky and Jasper grinned. It reminded him of the on-going disagreement he had with Alice; they'd seen an airplane in the sky and she'd insisted again and again that it was a shooting star. He wished she could be here now so that he could point out what a real shooting star looked like. He wondered if she could see it too, or if the stars were seen differently over there. Could Alice see that extra bright one right above? Or the small cluster to the left? Or was she across the world, staring at a different bunch of stars all together.
Jasper passed some time by thinking of a different memory of Alice for each star he could see. He tried to arrange the thoughts into constellations, trying to create a bigger picture.
When the sun finally dragged itself over the horizon, Jasper got up and got ready for school. School was weird without Alice; too empty, too quiet. He was too used to it being filled with her bubbling laughter and hyped-up chit chat. Before he left, he looked at Alice's calendar hung on their bedroom wall. She'd written a countdown of the days until she'd be home. Two more days...just two more days. Jasper could do that, right?
~o.O.o~
Two days later, Jasper was waiting at the airport, ready to pick Alice up. He held a make-shift chauffer sign, reading "My beautiful Wife", along with a bunch of yellow and white flowers.
As soon as she spotted him she ran, almost forgetting to keep a human pace, and jumped into his arms, causing the sign and flowers to fall to the ground. He held her for a long time, before they finally released each other. It had only been two weeks, not long to be apart for some people. To them it had felt like a little infinity.
Alice retrieved the flowers and Jasper carried the sign, their free hands clasped firmly in each other's. They talked for a while, about what Alice had done in London, about missing each other, about what schoolwork she needed to catch up on. Alice gave Jasper his present; a London Guard soldier teddy bear. She giggled, "I think you look better in your soldier uniform, but this is all they had."
They got in the car and began the drive home.
"What's happened whilst I've been away?" Alice wanted to know.
"You've been gone a couple of weeks," Jasper said, "Hmm, what'd you miss...A celebrity did drugs. Politicians disagreed. A different celebrity wore a bikini that revealed a bodily imperfection."
Alice gave him a playful frown, "Have you been reading Cosmo?"
"I certainly have not." Jasper said, "It was on the 'Celeb News' in between all the TV programmes I was recording for you."
"America's Next Top Model?" Alice asked. Jasper nodded, "Love you Jazz!"
Jasper laughed, "Does your love for me depend on my ability to record America's Next Top Model?"
"Definitely." Alice told him seriously.
Jasper shook his head at her with a laugh, for he knew Alice was joking. He knew that her love for him was unconditional, as was his for hers. No number of infinities apart would take that away from them.
A/N: So, there were some TFIOS references mixed in there...7 in total I think ;);) See if you can spot them and let me know which ones you recognized in a review! ;)
Thanks to my darling Pixie for introducing me to the song...which had me crying the first few times I listened to it, thinking about TFIOS...but yeah, good song :') Now I'm just painfully waiting the two weeks until the movie comes out in England... :/:/
