Klaus + Hayley: Unrequited Love (AU 2x14)

Maybe he really didn't think it through, when he held her in his arms for that one night. Perhaps he wasn't meant to have her. She wasn't the woman he thought she was when she came into Tyler's home in Mystic Falls. She was a little wolf, his little wolf, strong, alone and brave. The time during her pregnancy couldn't have been more difficult for him, but only now as he watched her walk down the aisle, with Jackson alongside her, did he realize how difficult this journey might have been for her. He saw her…during her transition. He looked out for her. He had trained her, taught her everything that she needed to know. She was and would always be his little wolf, no matter what anyone said. Little did he know how he had grown feelings for this beautiful Queen in this period of time.

Hayley saw him standing in the balcony and she looked up. Both he and Elijah were looking down. She could feel Elijah staring at her intensely, but he, the man whose attention she wanted and needed…he wouldn't look. She realized now how he couldn't bear to see all of this. This wedding, it had been her idea, she had to admit it. She didn't think that Jackson would agree, but he did at long last. Now, they were prepared to be wed, as they had originally planned…for their pack. Walking up the staircase, she shared a smile with Jackson, as Mary was waiting for them, with a smile on her face. The ceremony was to begin.

Mary handed her a candle and as she handed one to Jackson also, Hayley looked up. Their eyes met at once and she tried to look past everything that happened. They should be happy. Their daughter came home. She was with them, and she was safe. She was going to go through a marriage which would help Hope. She could have the wolves at her side, she would be the little princess of an army, people of her blood who will care and protect her for as long as she lives. She bit her lip as Klaus stared at her intensely. There was no anger, no pity, no skepticism, no nothing showing on his face. He was serious, and the more she stared at him, the more she realized that his eyes were piercing through her soul.

She tried to smile, she really did. It was smile from the corner of her mouth, could barely reach her eyes. It was not a sincere smile that she tried to show him. She didn't wish to give him the impression that she was happy, when she clearly wasn't. She wanted to show him, that what happened between them…meant something to her. She wanted to show him encouragement that what she was doing was for Hope, not for herself. She closed her eyes as Mary began speaking and she relieved that moment when Jackson got on his knee and asked her to marry him. Accepting hadn't been difficult for her. The moment she read Ansel's journal, she knew what she needed to do to help her baby girl.

Jackson showed her the biggest smile the moment she said "yes" and her heart was shattering, behind that smile she was returning him. She knew that this wasn't what she wanted, but what did she have to lose? She wished for as long as she could remember a stable relationship with a man who loved her. Jackson had always felt connected to her, even before they officially met. He had been nothing but sweet and gentle with her and that is what she was always hoping to have, but her heart told her otherwise. Her heart longed for something else, something she couldn't explain.

Time was passing by and Hayley finally opened her eyes to see that Jackson was staring at her, as Mary continued talking. He mouthed to her, "Are you okay?" She smiled in response and bit her lip, looking down as the candle still flickered in her hand. She turned her head sideways and noticed the way he was looking at her, in a way in which she felt like he was punishing himself for letting her get to this moment. No one at the compound knew what had really happened the moment Hayley stepped into the compound after Jackson proposed to her. She remembered seeing him, and what he had shown her. She didn't know what he thought was going to happen. She was in a state of shock. Hayley closed her eyes again, as she remembered that night.

She was excited. At least, part of her was. This was the first time that a man had gotten down on his knee and proposed to her. He didn't offer her a ring, but the way he asked her, it melted her heart to see such sweetness in a man. She needed a break herself. Maybe Jackson could offer her the proper comfort she was looking for. She entered her room and stopped in her tracks when she saw Klaus standing there, his lips pursed and he was looking out the window. "You have been gone a long while." He whispered and finally turned his head to look at her. "Yes. Jackson and I…we had things to discuss with the wolves." The words barely left her mouth. She didn't know if she should tell him now, or not.

He curved his lips into a small smirk as she looked away from him. "Have you heard anything from…Rebekah?" she finally whispered, unable to think about anything else but her daughter right now. "No. But rest assured that my sister knows what she is getting herself into with my mother on the loose. She will protect Hope at all costs, Hayley." "I know that. I don't doubt her." "You doubt me." Klaus finally whispered and looked out the window. What brought this on? Hayley frowned as she crossed her hands over her chest and went closer to him, finally resting a hand on his shoulder.

"Has something happened between you and your brothers?" Finn and Kol have been keeping him occupied for days, and she has been spending a lot of time in the bayou with Jackson. What exactly has she missed? He turned his head towards her and shook his head. "It's…frustrating." He finally told her and moved away from the window…and closer to her. Hayley had to fight the urge to embrace him. His intense gaze was making it so difficult for him. He took in a deep breath and raised his finger, caressing her cheek softly as he mouth parted in shock.

"There is something you wish to tell me, little wolf." He stated all of a sudden, pulling his hand away as if she had shocked him and the warmth left her body the minute he pulled away. It was terribly disappointing for her, and she couldn't understand why. Why was he making her feel this way? How well he was able to read her, it astounded him greatly. She sighed and looked away but he pulled at her chin, making her gaze into eyes full of pain. She couldn't understand this change of attitude. What had happened? Was he looking for comfort from her?

"Tell me that you are not seriously considering it." Klaus told her and Hayley blinked, as she pulled his hand away from her face, as to stop it from distracting her. "What are you talking about?" she asked him, confused. "The werewolf lad asked you to marry him, did he not?!" he was enraged and his eyes had suddenly transformed from kindness, to coldness. What was his problem? And most importantly, how the hell did he hear about the proposal? "Klaus." She breathed and shook her head, not being able to say any more. She was confused and suddenly, she could feel her eyes showing him the same coldness. "Have you been spying on me?" "As a matter of fact, I have vampires roaming around that swamp! I am always informed on the latest events and the fact that Jackson proposed to you, is something that has been roaming around for hours now. Were you planning on telling me?!"

"Hold up a minute! I can't believe that you would actually send out your vampire buddies to spy on me! What is wrong with you?" "Answer the question, little wolf! Did he or did he not propose to you?" "He did. About an hour ago." "That was when I heard the news." Klaus whispered, more calmly this time, the coldness not leaving his eyes. "And what if he did?" "Did you accept?" "Yes, I did! He made the suggestion and I have finally found a way to save Hope from hiding! I am going to bring my daughter back home, Klaus and there is nothing you can do to stop this marriage from happening!" Hayley yelled in his face. She moved away from him. She was done listening to him. She couldn't bear having him dictate her life. He is the one who has made it complicated for her…and when push came to shove, he left her on her own when she needed him the most…when she was having their baby.

Hayley didn't reach the door, as he spun her around and she could see both pain and anger on his face, as he slammed her against said door and made her almost yell out in protest. In a nanosecond, she could feel nothing but warmth against her lips. It took her a minute to register what was happening. Klaus, his mouth descended on hers, kissing her roughly and angrily. She wanted to stop, but she couldn't. Her heart wouldn't let her stop. She closed her eyes and she could feel her hand, following her heart, not her mind, running through the curls at the back of his head, pulling him deeper into her. His arms snaked around her waist and pulled her even closer to her, as he kissed her, pouring his anger and heartache into her. He didn't realize how long he had been longing to do this.

Catching his breath, he only partially moved away, breathing in and out in anger, as his hand went up from her waist and cupped her cheek, making her look at him. His mouth was still hovering over hers and she was a real mess. Her face felt hot, she was emotionally wrecked, and she couldn't stop looking into his eyes. She couldn't process what was happening. "Klaus…" she began and bit her lip, her eyes moving from his eyes to his lips, the lips she had felt once again after such a long time. Her heart started beating faster and faster, as she realized how much she had wanted these lips, how much she missed them. But she couldn't let him catch on to this. This was wrong, this shouldn't have happened.

"Please…don't marry him." Klaus finally looked at her in the eyes and his nostrils flattered, from their intense and hot moment, but she could still see the anger in his eyes, aside from the passion. She could feel her eyes watering and she tried looking away, but the hand cupping her cheek, wouldn't let her. "What are you talking about? Klaus, what are you doing?" she finally found her voice and asked him. He couldn't answer her either. His eyes left hers and he was looking down at the ground. Her hand went up and her mind told her to shake it off her cheek. But the minute she touched the hand which was cupping her face, she gasped, as her stomach was playing tricks on her. She could feel herself tingling from this touch. She couldn't break free. She didn't want to. And the next moment…he was gone!

"Hayley!" He could hear someone yelling at her and she was pulled out of her trance the minute she saw Jackson looking at her, worried. "What?" she whispered. Mary cleared her throat and Hayley looked around to see that all the guests were looking at her. Her cheeks felt hot the minute she met his gaze. He was watching her closely, with the same impassive look on his face. "Hayley, you must tell Jackson your vows." Mary finally whispered to her. The hybrid looked at the man she was prepared to marry. Her mouth parted, but no words left her mouth. "Hayley?" Jackson asked her, waiting. Hayley looked up and fear crossed her eyes when she saw that he was gone. He had left in the blink of an eye and the balcony was empty. "No." she whispered and her eyes filled with tears. "What?" Jackson asked her.

"Jack, I'm sorry…I can't do this." She finally admitted it to herself…and to the rest. "Why not?" he asked her. "I…I have to go." She whispered, looking around, as if afraid to lose something. "Have to go." She finally whispered and ran down the staircase. The wedding was off. Tears were streaming down her cheeks, at the confusion. Why did she do what she just did? He couldn't have meant what he said to her. He couldn't have. This was a mistake, but a mistake she wanted to make.

He was in Hope's nursery, the one place she thought he would be. Their child was nestled under blankets to keep her warm…she was safe. Her father was watching her sleep. He turned around the moment he felt her and tried avoiding her eyes. "Is it done?" he asked her. After hearing nothing, he finally looked up at her and he could see the tear which strained down from her cheek. "Yes." She responded and before he could turn away, she ran up to him, cupping his cheeks and kissing him as passionately as she could. He was in shock, as she jumped into his arms, but he accepted her. There needn't be any logic. He closed his eyes and kissed her back just as much. "The wedding is done. It's finished…it didn't happen." She whispered, as she pulled back, her eyes closed. He gently laid his forehead on hers and started kissing her again.

"I didn't marry him…I couldn't…" Hayley whispered as she pulled back from their kiss once more. She opened her tearful eyes and looked at him as he rubbed his finger just under her eye. He didn't say anything as he looked at her. "I didn't marry him. The wedding didn't happen." Hayley said again as she continued to look at him. He was not responding…and it was frightening her. "I know how you feel about me. Your feelings are reciprocated and you must know that." Hayley tried again, desperation in her voice. He just smiled at her, didn't say a word, as he rocked her gently against him and soothed her. "All I ask…is for a chance, little wolf." He finally whispered and she could feel her heart leap out of her chest when she heard him responding. "And a chance is what you will receive. I am giving…us…a chance." The smile never left his face, as he held her close to him.

A/N: A one shot inspired by an idea Jendallforever offered me. I hope I captured the true emotions of both Klaus and Hayley during the almost wedding and how they were feeling about one another before.
