Klaus + Hayley: An Apology Costs Nothing (Post 2x16)
He has had a change of heart and slowly, he started to realize what the current situation was. Sighing, Klaus put down the glass of bourbon he was holding and looked outside of the balcony, towards the city lights in the night. He recalled what she said to him earlier, and her words could not be pushed out of his mind. Had he been too harsh on her? He could not say. Growling, he stepped back from the balcony, realizing the real reason why he was upset. This had everything to do with Jackson, and his leadership. The faith and the support Hayley was offering him, was making Klaus angrier by the minute. Sitting down in his armchair, he closed his eyes and thought about her words, analysis each of them.
"We need to talk." She said in a firmer manner, he knew when she was pissed. He could feel her presence up there on that balcony, watching him dive into his drinks. It has been a rough day for them all, but not rougher than his…having to decide whether to trust his so-called sister, Freya with his daughter's life or not. He sighed and rolled his eyes to the back of his head. "Do we indeed?" he asked her in a whisper. Insulting Jackson had never been a problem for him and he realized that Hayley didn't mind as much anymore either…but tonight, she had a change of heart. "You will show him respect, Klaus!" she put up her finger to make a point as she stepped closer to him. He looked towards her and analyzed her authorial ways. If he wasn't drunk, he would have appreciated her for it.
His frown deepened as he said, "You know, I have spent all day with people who claim to be fighting for our daughter. Some I trust, some I do not, but one thing is for sure, that there is only one person that I trust when it comes to my child's safety and that would be me!" he nearly yelled in her face. His eyes were twisting in anger and he could notice her shocked expression, not expecting something like this from him. He looked at her for another moment, before turning away and heading away from her. He would not let her have the last word this time. He knew what happened during their last fight. The memory would not fade from his mind…the way she stopped him. She pressed her firm hand on his chest and demanded him to listen to her, like the Queen she was. But he was in no mood to let her have the upper hand now, that he knew she was completely on Jackson's side, without hearing his views.
Klaus turned around with his hands in the air. "You know…you all seem to think this is a democracy! I assure you, it is not!" Hayley crossed her hands over her chest and decided to listen to him quietly, knowing that she will not get anywhere with him, as he was this drunk. "If Dahlia is coming, then she is a threat to my child, which means I decide how to protect her and no one else!" Hayley watched him intensely with a frown on her face, not giving him a clue that she was in utter shock. She was that child's mother! Of course she had a say in the matter. Noticing the angry look on his face, she decided to remain calm and let him speak, otherwise, she was sure things would get ugly eventually. "And if Jackson or anyone else strays from the course that I set, then they will answer to me." He started getting back closer to her, making her raise her head up, whenever she felt intimidated.
It was her way of showing her own power as Queen and Hayley was not planning on cracking up in front of him. She wanted to let him believe that he has control over her, when in fact, she would be the one deciding the future of the werewolves in that bayou, not Jackson and not Klaus. "Now your husband would do well to remember that." Klaus warned her and she continued to stare at him, without saying a word. She realized how bad he had it for Jackson. The hatred for the current alpha of the Crescents was indescribable and Hayley could not particularly understand this hatred. "In fact, I think I'll leave it to you to remind him. That way, when he does inevitably incur my wrath again, you will only have yourself to blame." He said in her face. Staring at her with nothing but pure hatred, made her heart drop as he started walking away from her. She couldn't stop him this time, and she wasn't planning on doing that.
He shook his head and sighed as he remembered the looks she was offering him. "Hayley." He muttered under his breath. A couple of hours have passed since their argument and he no longer felt drunk. Klaus pushed the drink further away from him, not needing the temptation to run through him again. He replayed the conversation once again through his mind, as he walked around the compound. For the first time in a while, he had realized how peaceful it was to be in his home…but it once again felt terribly lonely. Rebekah was having her body problems, staying with Marcel. Elijah had gotten a place of his own, helping Marcel run the vampire clan, and having pursued a romance with the newly-transformed, Gia. And at last, Hayley had married Jackson. They claimed to be living at the compound, but Klaus could feel Hayley distancing herself from him more and more, as she started preferring the bayou.
Now, it was simply him and the daughter he swore to protect until his last day. It was just the two of them. Sighing, he felt the need to go to her nursery for comfort, but stopped in his tracks, thinking about doing something first. Groaning, he realized what he had said to Hayley earlier and that was not going to just leave him at peace. "You know, I have spent all day with people who claim to be fighting for our daughter. Some I trust, some I do not, but one thing is for sure, that there is only one person that I trust when it comes to my child's safety and that would be me!" He closed his eyes as he found her phone number of speed dial. He pressed the phone to his ear as he thought about another phrase of his, leaving his mouth in a moment of complete anger. "If Dahlia is coming, then she is a threat to my child, which means I decide how to protect her and no one else!" He refused to have Hayley as his enemy. They were partners. They have been before this atrocity of a marriage between her and Jackson.
The silence of the compound was disturbed by a ringtone, which could be heard through all the walls. Klaus immediately recognized it as her phone…coming from the nursery. Had she left it there? Going there at once, his eyes widened as he watched her there, putting their child to sleep. She was no longer dressed in her regular clothes and simply had a white nightdress put on, as she was rocking their baby. Their eyes met for a silent moment, as Klaus put his phone away and cleared his throat, saying in a calm tone, "I thought you had left." She bit her lip as she placed Hope in her crib and whispered, "I was planning to." "Tired of spending every single moment with your husband?" Klaus asked her, in a manner which he could not control. The anger washed through him again as he saw her look startled. "I also have a daughter, Klaus. Now, please, she has barely fallen asleep." Hayley stepped outside of the room and closed the door behind her, moving away from him.
Klaus could not handle such silence coming from her. But who could blame her, after his outburst? "Hayley!" he called out to her, but she wouldn't stop. Grabbing her hand, he spun her around and she collided into his chest, breathing in deeply. Her hands were touching his chest, but he was not pulling them away. They looked at one another intensely before he whispered, "Are you going to ignore me for the rest of your night?" She pushed herself away from him a little as she said silently, "Jackson is not coming back here. I have a daughter to take care of, so I will stay here for now, but I must talk my husband into coming here to be with me and her. I don't want to argue with you about her, and I really don't want anything from you anymore. You just do what you do best to keep her safe, as Jackson and I take care of our pack, as alphas." That stung him more than he realized, as he let her go and watched her leave him. But she was not going to her room. She was going to another. His Art Studio. Captivated by her, Klaus walked over there and closed the door behind him.
"I thought you said that you didn't want to have anything to do with me, little wolf." He whispered as he watched her admire his paintings. "This place offers me a lot of comfort so I like to come here when I can, once in a while." Hayley explained with a sigh, as she ran her hand on one of the paintings. He sighed and shook his head, realizing how wrong this was in their relationship. They couldn't be this way. They couldn't be separate when it came to their daughter. Going closer to her, he took her hand in his and made her look at him. "It used to be the two of us, protecting Hope. You changed that and now, I wish to make up for the way I acted earlier regarding Jackson. How do you suppose I could do that?" Hayley shrugged and whispered, "An apology costs nothing." That was all she could say.
"Very well. If it is an apology you wish for, it is something I can offer you. I apologize for my rudeness towards you a couple of hours ago." His eyes showed sincerity and as Hayley looked into them, she knew that he was not trying to soften her up for another manipulation game of his. He really meant it. With a small smile on her face, she nodded and whispered, "You were drunk and I really can't blame you after the day you've had. I heard from Rebekah." "Then you must know my sister, Freya is in town." "And you don't trust her for showing up at the precise moment you believe she knows when she is needed. You have every right to be suspicious of her." A small smile was on Klaus' face as he looked at her. He knew that she would always have his back, no matter what. She was his little wolf.
"I am afraid that Rebekah and Elijah do not share the same opinion, love." "I couldn't really care less. This is not their child. It's ours and we are the ones who should decide how to protect Hope." Klaus nodded, noticing what was had implied in that sentence. "You're right. She is our daughter and she is our responsibility. We must get through all of these troubles together as a family. It is the only way, little wolf. And please note that I do consider you an important member of this family. Do not think for one minute that I don't believe you don't have a say in Hope's life. You are the mother of my child. You have every right to protect her and decide for her as I do." "Your actions prove you otherwise." "I have already explained to you that it is Jackson I don't trust at all. You being married to him now, makes it that much more difficult for me to work with you for our daughter."
A frown appeared on Hayley's face as she whispered, "Klaus, you have to accept sooner or later that Jackson is my husband now. I don't know for how long but he is my husband and I need my family to protect my daughter. If you interfere and make decisions for Jackson, regarding my pack, it will make both of us look as if we are under your influence and the pack is not going to like this. Let me handle this. This is my pack." "I understand, but Jackson…" She rolled her eyes as he said that and he cupped her cheek, making her look at him in the eyes. "If anyone should be running that pack, it should be you." He told her, making her mouth part open in shock. For a moment, she thought that he was once again trying to manipulate her, but he wasn't. He was being the most sincere he could be. "I understand that this pack will never let me become their alpha. I can accept that. But I shall not back away from something which I believe is the rightful thing to do. You must take Jackson's role as alpha in this pack. You are a Labonair, the true heiress for this throne and you are more of a leader than him."
"Klaus, Jackson is my husband. I will never turn against him this way and I am sorry to inform you, but a woman is not seen well by leading a pack of werewolves on her own." "Says who?" "Tradition. Something which you have never had access to." There was a moment of silence as she still felt his warm hand on her face and she gently bit her lip before saying, "You have the mentality and the strength of an alpha, Klaus…" There was hope in his eyes and his face lightened as he heard this. He gripped her face much firmer, and she felt him pull her closer to him. But seeing her shake her head this way, made him lose all the hope he had as she whispered, "…but you don't have the heart of an alpha. You use the pack for your own gain. You use the people as an army against your enemies. Once they become no longer useful to you, you either kill them or leave them on the side of a road."
His mouth parted as he started shaking his head and saying, "I had no idea you thought so low of me." "I don't. Klaus, I already told you that you have everything an alpha of a pack should have…but not enough to be their King." "So, I do not possess the heart of one? And what are you implying, little wolf? That Jackson does?" "I observed Jackson and I see many faults in his hand as ruler over the wolves. He is not that good of a leader and I know that he can easily be challenged by any member of the pack, if he does not keep himself together. I may be forced to help him with that, in order for us to remain at power. Klaus, he may not possess your intellect, power and strength, but he has an alpha's heart, and that alone can make him a good leader for our pack. He cares about us, all of us…as you keep putting us in danger."
"Those wolves have agreed to this. They agreed to protect my daughter. They have to realize that in order for this to happen, they have to go through some tough challenges. They didn't honestly think that they would receive your powers of a hybrid and give nothing in return, did they?" "You're doing it again. Don't you see?" He looked at her for a moment before whispering, "Then help me." "What?" "Teach me to be that good alpha for your pack." "Klaus, no…" He stopped her by whispering, "Just think about it, love. Who has the potential of leading your pack to greatness and peace once and for all? Jackson or me?" She could no longer speak, as he pulled his hand away and walked past her, out of the Art Studio, leaving her to contemplate on what he was suggesting.
A/N: I felt like doing something for 2x16 because I think that conversation between them left a lot of things which were unspoken. Hope you liked it, and leave me ideas for other drabbles soon! I am running out of ideas.
Thank you for reading and please leave me reviews!
