Klaus + Hayley: (AU) The End of World War II
It was muddy and it was all gray in front of his eyes. 1945, the year it all ended, and he was afraid of this day to come. Why? He could not process anything rational in his mind…other than the need to kill, the need to shoot, fire the bullets from his weapon and murder the enemy. He had been in the battle front and he was forced to watch his colleagues being blown away by the others. He had survived. Niklaus Mikaelson stuttered to speak when they asked for his name…a survivor. The English Army was celebrating the success, but was devastated by the loss as well. "Niklaus Mikaelson." He finally whispered and he realized that he had not said his name for a good two years now. But he had the name in his mind. Other names had haunted him these past six years. Names…but faces were a blur. "Father. Mother." Klaus whispered, and his eyes watered.
Only now could he remember his father's death and the image of his mother's tear stained face, when he died. But there was another face he could remember, this face being more familiar to him. It was a lost soul, a soul just like him…who searched for the cure against loneliness. The name of this one…he couldn't figure out, but it was a girl, a girl who was close to him six years ago, a girl who had caressed his face and promised him good health and wealth for the future. A girl with long and brown locks, sometimes braided, sometimes let loose. A clean olive-colored skin and those eyes…sometimes hazel…sometimes pure green…depending on the sunrays which crossed them. He took a seat and gulped some of the water that has been given him, as some of his colleagues patted his back. "We get to go home! At last!" The youngest cried out, wanting to embrace their parents.
All Klaus could do was sit on the stone and try to remember the times when he could call himself a happy man. "HAYLEY!" a voice yelled out in his mind and Klaus could realize that it was his voice. His younger self calling out the beautiful maiden, who was running away from him, in a beautiful dress and a flower showing in her hair. "Catch me, Niklaus!" Niklaus, she had called him. He had only two people who called him by his full name. His mother, who had loved him from the moment she set eyes on him, and of course…her. She was to be seen as part of his family as well. "Home." He whispered, wherever it was, he had to go back. He had to see her again. Had she missed him? Had she prayed for him to return to her? The village was small…but it was home and it was where he had spent all of his childhood in.
"Catch me, Niklaus! Catch me!" A beautiful young woman called out to him and with a grin plastered on his face, he stood up and started running towards her as she giggled, and smiled back towards him. They were supposed to be working, which was all his mother could think about, in order to bear the loss of her husband and the loss of her two children, Elijah and Rebekah. Elijah was lost in a battle…Niklaus barely had the chance to see recognize him as a brother at such a fragile age and as for Rebekah…the girl desperate to love…she had abandoned the family, for a man she wanted to marry but her father wouldn't allow it. She had sworn to marry this man…and so she had left and had never returned. "Niklaus!" Hayley called out again with a seductive smile playing on her face but she yelped when strong hands had been wrapped around her waist and pulled her down on the grass.
"I've got you, love. I've got you." He whispered in her ear as his hands tickled her breasts. She let out a cry and a giggle at the same time, as they rolled over one another. "Niklaus!" Esther snapped and the two of them pulled themselves off of one another. "You are no longer children and you must do what you are told. We must be able to provide for ourselves. Can't you see the misery which God has placed upon us? Wars after wars…nothing to eat. We all starve. Hayley, must I speak to your mother about your un-lady like behavior?" Hayley got off Niklaus and crushed away the mess which was in her hair. "No, ma'am. I'm sorry." Esther scowled at both of them and then went back inside. Klaus let out a chuckle and Hayley glared at him. "Your poor mother is suffering and all you can do is laugh, Niklaus. Why would you do something like that?"
"Love, I care for my mother but she is taking things far." "She is right. We are not children anymore and we should start acting like mature adults." "You are 18, Hayley and I am 24." "Yes, exactly. Mature adults, Niklaus. We were allowed to play this way when we were children because we were young and just infants who had not a care in the world. Now we must take our responsibilities in our hands…and we must…" She noticed that he was looking over at her face in a more intense way, than before. Klaus nodded and cupped her cheek. "You are absolutely correct. It is right for us to take such responsibilities in our hands. We are no longer children…so I wish to do something." "What?" Hayley breathed in as the energy drained from her body when he pressed his lips to hers and firmly kissed her. After a minute, he pulled back and looked at her with mesmerized eyes. "Niklaus…we can't." "Why not? What is stopping us from being together?" "We are friends…" "We have been…when we were children. Now I wish to be more." "I can't be more…I don't think I am ready."
"No one is prepared to fall in love, Hayley." Klaus murmured and pressed his lips against hers again, making a small moan erupt from her mouth. He fumbled with her dress, and took her away from public view, into the bar and laid her on the hay inside it. The smell did not bother them, as they were more and more absorbed with one another as the kisses intensified. "If your mother finds out…" "What can she do? Why would she stop us? She has said it herself that she wants me to be happily married one day, why wouldn't she accept you and I to be married?" "Married?" "Yes. I am in this for the long haul, my love." He murmured and started kissing her again, gently taking off her dress. She had lost the battle with her heart. She knew she wanted this, just as much as he wanted this. It was the first time she was experiencing something like this with a man…but she never thought that it would be with her best friend. He was cocky, handsome and ingenious in what he said and did…that, she always acknowledged.
When he entered her with passion, she felt consumed. Her most precious treasure…taken away from her, but she offered it to him gladly, as her tongue rolled into his mouth, gently colliding with his in another sweet kiss. He made love to her for a whole hour, until they released themselves and he fell gently on top of her, breathing in deeply and feeling her heartbeat quicken underneath him. Her hands were warm and were on his cold back, as they lay in the hay, with nothing on top to cover them from the cold. He kissed her neck gently and she gulped, when he pushed himself off of her and fell next to her. He took her hand in his and pressed a kiss on it, as she continued to look up. "We shouldn't have done that."
"Of course we should have." "No, Niklaus." Hayley whispered with tears in her eyes, as she pulled herself up and put on her dress. "My virginity needed to be promised to my future husband. My mother is going to kill me for this. Who will take me as a wife now in this village?" "I will." He stood up and kissed her forehead. Her eyebrows furrowed as she looked up and asked, "What?" "I said that I would…I would ask you to be my wife, Hayley." "No, Niklaus…" "Why not? Why do you deny it? Why do you deny the pull between us? Why? Hayley, listen to me. I love you. I have fallen in love with you. I want us…I want you." He kissed her softly again but stopped when Hayley's eyes watered as she whispered, "I didn't know how to tell you." "Tell me what?" "My mother has already promised my hand to Jackson Kenner."
Klaus gulped back tears as he held his hand to his forehead, remembering this…the last time he felt complete and happy. Six years ago, when he made love to the most beautiful woman in the world. He loved Hayley Marshall. He knew he did…but she already promised to another man, a man she had betrayed by giving away her virginity to him. He was taken back, after a long drive through the territories…he was finally back in the village he grew up in. "Your country thanks you for your services to the country, my dear boy. You shall be rewarded for your courage and your success." His commander told him. Klaus nodded and whispered, "Thank you, sir." "You may see your family now. I am sure that six years of this horrifying war has taken a lot from you…and has taken you from them…" He pointed at the people. "…but we have won, and our world will be under better care. Good luck, Niklaus!"
He was left there. Many people had saluted him. They were back into his life. His friends had welcomed him, but with tragic news. His mother had passed away last year, and there was no way to contact him in order to tell him. Niklaus dropped down on his knees and wept into a cloth. His own mother. He had not had the chance to say goodbye to her, before she left this world. The commander had been right. The war had taken a great deal from him, and would continue to do so. He started running…he knew where to run. To her house, which had not changed. Her mother answered the door. She was sweating and she was happy to see him, offering him a hug of gratitude that he had returned safely. "Hayley. Where is she?" he asked. Her mother's smile dropped and so did his hopes that he could have her in his arms again. "She lives, in that house over there. But Klaus…" her mother had not finished her sentence because he was already running towards that house and was banging on the door.
His lips were trembling and he knew that first he needed to see her. He craved her, more than he craved to have a warm bath, something he hadn't had the pleasure of for years. A bath to soothe him but he knew that her face would soothe him more than anything else. The door opened and he feared that someone else would answer, Jackson, his competitor and the man she was supposed to marry six years ago, when he had last seen her. She was standing there, with her hair tied in a bun and her dress making her look stunning but her eyes were tired and after six years…she looked mature, but fit and just as beautiful as she was when she was younger. Their eyes met and hers expressed nothing but shock. "Ni…Ni…" She couldn't say his name. She didn't know how to say his name anymore. She had not spoken his name for years. His hand reached over and his finger grazed her cheek, as the tears welled up in her eyes.
"Please…speak to me." He whispered. She was about to say something when a little voice called out, "Mommy! Who is that?" A little girl appeared at the door, who looked to be no more than four or five years old. "Hope, dear, go back to your room." Hayley whispered, but Hope came over and held out her hand to him in a sweet way. "I'm Hope." Klaus shook it with a small smile but his heart dropped as he realized this had to be Hayley's daughter with Jackson. Her voice was a little hoarse but still as gentle, caring and strong as ever. "I'm Niklaus." Klaus responded and Hope smiled widely between her mother and him. Finally, she went back to her room, as her mother had said before. Hayley was looking down at her feet and finally found the courage to say, "I thought you were gone. I heard nothing from you for years and I thought you had perished." Her eyes were filled with tears and some escaped as he grabbed her, pulled her forward in a hug and kissed her forehead. "I am here now." "I thought you were gone. I missed you so much. I missed you." Hayley whispered in his neck, as they continued to hug each other. "I love you. I never stopped loving you." Klaus whispered in her ear and she stilled, pulling back a little and looking into his eyes.
"How could you continue…with everything…" "You have been my anchor and my reason for coming back. I have no one left here but you. I love you. I know you are married but I…" "No." Hayley responded and his heart felt like it was breaking to little pieces at her rejection. "I am not married." "What?" His heart was racing as Hayley bit her lip and found the energy to continue. "I never married Jackson. I was already pregnant. I left my mother's household and started working for myself and for my child." "Already pregnant? Is she…?" Hayley smiled sadly and nodded, whispering, "Yes, Niklaus. Hope is yours. She is your daughter." His forehead touched hers and he said, "You have no idea how happy you have made me at this moment. I love you, Hayley. Stay with me." "I thought you were dead." Hayley cried and kissed his wounded rough hands. "I am here…I am back…and I will not dare to leave you again." He kissed her passionately, never having felt a woman's lips or a woman's body after hers…after all these years…she was the only one in his heart. "I want to be with Hope. Will you help me?" "Of course, she is your daughter after all." Hayley said and kissed his lips, leading him inside for a warm bath she knew in her heart he needed.
A/N: I hope you liked this one. I have never written anything war related before so I hope this was okay for a first and I haven't written anything OOC. This was asked by an anon on Tumblr.
