"James! Psst! James, wake up!"

I rolled over in my bed with a groan, pulling the comforter over my head. Only the first weekend of school and Sirius was already trying to get me up before normal people. "Go back to bed, Sirius."

"No! Evirah wants to see us!"

"She can bloody wait!"

There was a long silence, so I started to relax again. Maybe he would leave me be this morning.

And then I was floating.

Wait, what?

"Sirius!" I yelped, twisting in mid-air to face Sirius. "Mate, what the-"

I froze (well, sort of, I was still floating upward).

"I think I just figured out how you blew up the peanut butter," I told him, even though my glowing brother didn't seem to be listening, or even looking at me; his eyes were white and glowing, something that was not normal- even less so than the fact that he himself was glowing. I tried to manoeuvre myself over towards him. "Ugh, how does Reg do this?"

Finally, I reached him, but he was too far below me for me to hit and I really didn't want to kick him, so I just decided I'd douse him with water. Soon as the liquid hit him, I fell straight to the ground.

Yeah, I should have thought that through more.

"Ow, my head," I muttered, rubbing my head. Sirius was shaking his head like a dog, looking like he was about to fall over. I glared at him. "Don't ever do that again."

"What?" he asked. "James, why did you soak me this time?"

My jaw dropped. "What do you mean, why? You were glowing and had me bloody floating in mid-air!"

"Glowing…?" he asked, looking rather shocked before he unceremoniously dropped onto the floor unconscious. Alarmed, I knelt beside him and shook him.

"Sirius? Are you okay?" I asked him worriedly. No response.

"James, Sirius, go back to bed!" came Remus's voice from his bunk. "Or leave. All the normal people are trying to sleep."

"I'd go back to sleep, but Sirius just managed to knock himself out," I said irately. Remus groaned and sat up, and Regulus shot upward like a bullet. Peter, unsurprisingly, was still snoring away. He could sleep through the end of the world if you let him.

Regulus floated over to us, and started poking Sirius. I hit his hand away.

"Okay, nobody wants to be woken up like that," I told him, crossing my arms. "Remember, last time he hit you."

Regulus pouted.

"How'd he manage to knock himself out?" asked Remus, kneeling beside me next to Sirius. "And why is he all wet?"

"Well, the wet part is my fault," I said awkwardly. "But in my defence, I didn't know how to make him drop me!"

"Drop you?" asked Regulus.

"I was floating- like Reggie!" I explained. Both looked dumbfounded. "Sirius did it. He was glowing and his eyes were white and I didn't know how to snap him out of it so I soaked him. And it must've taken a lot of energy or something, because afterward he just collapsed!"

Just then, Sirius stirred and sat up, rubbing his head. I sighed in relief. At least he was okay. "Urgh, what happened?"

"You're alright!" beamed Regulus, hugging his brother tightly.

"Can't breathe, Reg," Sirius choked out, and Reg let go of him quickly. "Hey, Moony, you're awake!"

Remus just glared and ignored him.

I turned towards Remus. "I think this has something to do with the Heart incident at the end of last year."

"What does?"

"We should ask Dumbledore about this," said Remus. "He might know what's going on."

"What's going on?"

"I don't think he can help," I said.

"Are you ignoring me?"

"Quiet, Sirius," I said exasperatedly. "Dumbledore may not be able to hulp us… but maybe Evirah can… come on, guys. We're going to the Heart."

The walk to the Heart was as uneventful as always. Just trees, and, as usual, we didn't run into any trouble at all. We'd told Dad where we were going, so at least we wouldn't get in trouble for disappearing again.

I, however, would be in major trouble because I'd forgotten to tell Lily where we were off to. Oops.

"Guess who's back?" Sirius yelled as soon as we entered the Heart. I groaned and was about to shush him when I noticed that most of the Heartians were already up. How long did it take us to get from Hogwarts to the Heart, anyway?

"Welcome back," greeted Evirah. "I see you got my message."

"What's wrong?" I asked. "Did something bad happen? How can we help?

Evirah looked pensive for a moment. "Nothing is wrong, per say. Simply odd. The elders have sensed an influx of powerful magic at Hogwarts, starting exactly when the students arrived this year."

We all glanced inconspicuously at Sirius, who gave us a look as if he were saying, 'what? I swear it wasn't me this time!', before Remus spoke: "Yeah, we're pretty sure we know why."

"Oh?" asked Evirah cheerfully. "Excellent! Please, enlighten me."

"Sirius, of course. Who else?" I said, rolling my eyes. "He blew a couple of things up over the summer and this morning he had me floating."

"Don't forget the glowing," said Regulus. "'Cause you said he was glowing."

Evirah looked very alarmed. "White; was he glowing white? Did he faint afterwards? Did he remember what happened?"

I blinked in surprise, and Sirius narrowed his eyes contemplatively, as if this list was ringing a bell.

"Yeah," I said. "He was glowing white and he fainted, but he didn't remember."

"Of course," she murmured. "Of course. It makes so much sense."

Then she started speaking Heartian, and Sirius started to look alarmed as well. Finally, Marcik (Sirius's sword trainer) walked over and said something to Evirah, who managed to calm down.

"I'm sorry," she said at last. "It just surprised me. I believe I can shed a little light on the situation. You see, according to-"

"Oh no," said Sirius. "I can understand you lot and I know exactly what you were talking about before. There's no way you're telling James."

I crossed my arms. "That means it's bad?"

"No, nonsense," said Evirah. "It's a good thing. And I believe it includes all three of you."

"Er… there's four of us here," said Remus awkwardly.

"Well, not you," admitted Evirah.

Remus looked very content with that fact. Lucky git.

"In that case," said Remus, "I'm gonna see if there's any more of that yummy chocolate around here. That stuff was good."

I face-palmed as he walked off to find some chocolate. "Moony and his chocolate."

"There is a prophecy-"

I groaned. "We so don't need to be part of a prophecy."

"I agree," said Sirius, and I stared. "What? I know the prophecy she's talking about."

"But it's a good prophecy," insisted Evirah.

"Depends on your definition of good," came Marcik's heavily accented voice. Then he paused. "We are talking about the light trio versus darkness prophecy, right?"

"Aye," said Evirah. "And I think we have found the trio."

"Ah, great," I sighed. "Just when I thought life could be semi-normal."

"Our lives? Normal? Who're you kidding, Jamie?" exclaimed Regulus happily, before turning to Evirah. "Lily told me prophecies are sketchy at best, though."

"Human prophecies tend to be," admitted Evirah. "But this one has been passed down in Hanin legend for many centuries."

At first, I had thought she was going to say Heartian, but apparently they had a completely different name for themselves.

"Let's hear it then," said Regulus.

"It's in Heartian," said Sirius, and Evirah looked at him kind of weird. He didn't notice. "Specifically Ancient Heartian. It'd be next to impossible to translate into English."

"Brilliant," I muttered. "We're part of an ancient prophecy only Sirius understands. We're all gonna die."

"Actually, it basically says we're gonna save the world," Sirius offered helpfully.

"At a price," said Evirah. "What price we do not know. Prophecies are vague like that. I had slightly suspected when you found this place… and then James and Regulus both gained powers and Sirius survived the sacrifice… this only increases my suspicions and proves it to likely be true."

"My experience with prophecies like this implies that price is going to be a life," said Marcik. He narrowed his eyes at the three of us. "And probably one of yours."

We all exchanged glances.

"We don't know for certain," cut in Evirah. "It might not even be a price to our side."

"Evirah, it is always a price to the hero's side," said Marcik.

"Don't worry," Sirius told me. "He's superstitious and pessimistic. We'll be fine."

Somehow, though, I didn't believe him. Marcik was likely right, and with the Battle of Hogsmeade coming up… well, I didn't want to think about what that meant.

"So let me get this straight," said Lily slowly later that night. "You three are part of some ancient prophecy that can't be translated to English but basically implies that one of you is gonna die?"

We were all huddled up in our dorm, which wasn't really made to fit seven people, but it worked fine. We'd told Lily, Peter, and Severus all about the prophecy and what it implied. Severus was having a hard time believing us, of course, and Lily was sceptical as well. But what could we do? It wasn't like we made this up.

"That about sums it up," I said.

"I'd hate to be you guys right now," said Remus, munching on a piece of chocolate. "I mean, not only do you guys have weird, crazy powers, but you're also stuck in the middle of something way out of your hands!"

"Thank you for summing that up," Sirius deadpanned.

Regulus gently pried the chocolate from his hands. "I think you've had enough of this."

Remus pouted.

"Come on, guys!" said Peter encouragingly. "Who controls your future? You do! Not some old prophecy! 'Sides, James and Lily have already proven that the future isn't set in stone."

"Nice speech, Pettigrew," Snape drawled, but Peter just rolled his eyes at the Slytherin.

"Look, Peter's right," I said, getting to my feet. "If we're part of a prophecy to save the world, then we're going to bloody well save the world."

"And none of us are going to die!" said Sirius, also standing. We glanced at him. "Well, except for maybe me, but no one else!"

"Yeah!" said Regulus, before frowning. "Woah, woah, wait, no! No one is gonna die. No one."

"Fine, no one," said Sirius.

"I'll stand with you every step of the way," Lily said, standing next to me and leaning into my side. I smiled and put an arm over her shoulders.

"Us too," said Peter and Remus, also standing.

"Friends stick together," said Remus.

"No matter the circumstances," added Peter.

We all glanced at Severus, who was still sitting. He stared back for a bit, before sighing.

"Oh, alright, fine," he huffed, before getting reluctantly to his feet. "Look, I'm standing too, are you guys happy?"

Lily chuckled. "Very much so, Sev."

"Now," I said. "The hardest part will definitely be telling our parents."

Sirius and Regulus both paled and groaned.

"I know, they're gonna freak," I said. "We should get it over with. Rip the bandaid off fast."

"What's a bandaid?" asked Regulus.

"Never mind," I said. I turned to look at the group. "Who wants to come tell our dad with us?"

Immediately, all four sat down and averted their eyes. I rolled mine and turned back to Reg and Sirius. "Guess we're going alone. C'mon, team."

Both stared at me incredulously.

"I said," I grabbed their arms. "C'mon, team!"

They both sat down. I continued to try and drag them up. This continued for a few moments before I sat down too. They had the right idea… Mu m and Dad really were gonna kill us. "Yeah… maybe we can just not tell them yet."

Both nodded vigorously in agreement.
