I wasn't sure how to take the news that somebody was definitely going to die in the near future. The only relief for me was that it seemed it wasn't Sirius who was going to die.
So who then? It had to be someone we were close to. Heck, it could even be me. I halfway hoped it would be me, just so it couldn't be anyone else.
I knew better than to ask Sirius about it. He obviously didn't want to talk about it, and I didn't blame him. I wouldn't either. And it wasn't as if I was being complete honest with him.
Lily was near hyperventilating as we continued to walk to class. I held her hand tight.
When we reached Transfiguration, McGonagall did something that was very un-McGonagall like. She hugged us both, which left me very bewildered.
"Don't worry us like that again, you two," she said sternly, as if she were reprimanding us for a prank and not for disappearing in the middle of the night.
"Yes, ma'am," said Lily and I.
"Good, now sit down," she said, and we did so, too confused (and, admittedly, a bit scared) to do anything else. The rest of the class was staring at us with a mixture of awe and complete befuddlement.
Severus, who I'd coincidentally sat down next to, whacked me in the back of the head. "You're an idiot, Potter."
"Good to know," I muttered, rubbing the back of my head. "Did you have to hit me?"
He just shrugged.
"One of us is going to die," Lily squeaked next to me. Severus looked at her like she was mad, and I raised an eyebrow.
"Are you just now realising this?" I asked.
She just stared at me. "It's not funny, James, someone's going to die!"
"What have you two been up to?" asked Severus, looking beyond baffled. "Lily, nobody's going to die."
"Actually-"
"James, your pessimistic attitude will not help here."
I huffed, but he was right. I changed my plan of attack. "We've messed up the future plenty, so we can just mess it up some more and everything will be fine."
"James, that's awful logic," Lily said flatly.
I grinned. "But it is logic, you admit that much."
Lily groaned. "You are impossible, James Potter."
"But you love me anyway," I told her.
She laughed. "I suppose I do."
"Get a room," Severus said, shoving me teasingly.
I laughed and shook my head at him, before returning my attention to the Transfiguration lesson, hoping to keep my mind off of Sirius's ominous statement.
McGonagall was lecturing on Animagi today, so it was both amusing and boring to listen to her. I knew plenty about Animagi, after being one for so many years. A paper airplane landed on my desk, and I unfolded it.
Sirius's messy handwriting greeted me: Hey, Prongs! Want to sneak out later? The seven of us can hang out in the forest. We don't have classes this afternoon.
I scrawled a quick affirmative back, checked to make sure McGonagall wasn't looking, before tossing it back to him. He grinned at me, and I gave him a thumbs-up.
"Hey, guys," I said to Severus and Lily. "Want to hang out in the forest later?"
"James, you know I don't condone-"
"Sure," said Severus. "Better than hanging out here."
Lily sighed. "I have no choice in the matter, do I?"
Severus and I grinned at her. "Nope."
"So you snuck off in the middle of the night to talk to Evirah?" asked Remus.
I nodded. The Forbidden Forest was very calm this time of day, and, for once, I applauded Sirius's decision to sneak off. It was always nice to get a break. The wind rustled the trees above our heads, and the sky was clear and blue. It was just nice.
"In our defence," said Lily, "it was important."
"So important they won't share," added Sirius, giving me a cheeky grin.
"Hey, I'm not the only one keeping secrets, Pads," I retorted.
He shrugged. "Yeah, I know."
"Secrets are no fun," commented Regulus, floating along upside down. "We should all tell each other our deepest, darkest secrets and be done with it."
"I invented a spell that can kill people," said Severus flatly. The others stared at him. Lily and I laughed.
"He's not kidding," I said with a grin. "I've used it."
Now they stared at me, which only made Lily laughed harder.
Suddenly, there was a crash a few feet away, followed by annoyed shouting that we could barely make out. We all stopped and listened carefully.
"Now you've done it!" yelled a female voice. "Mama's going to kill us!"
"Me? I didn't do anything!"
"It was your idea to fly here, dingbat!"
"That's the stupidest insult I've ever heard."
"Like you could do better."
"Siblings, I suggest we be quiet," said a final voice. "We aren't alone."
We exchanged looks amongst ourselves, before three creatures walked into our view. My jaw dropped, and I was pretty sure everyone was mirroring me.
"Hello," said the white dragon.
"Talking dragon," Lily managed to say, eyes very wide.
"I think you broke them," said the reddish dragon.
The black dragon snorted smoke. "I think we all broke them."
"Hiya!" said Regulus, who seemed completely unaffected by the impossibility of the situation. "I'm Regulus, that's my brother Sirius and my brother James and James's girlfriend Lily and my friend Severus and Remus and Peter!"
"I'm Bob," said the black dragon, giving us a toothy grin.
Remus choked on air. "Bob?"
"Unfortunately, our aunt named us," said the white dragon dryly. "My name's Fred."
"I'm Stephan!" said the red dragon.
"But," said Sirius, "you're a girl."
"Yeah," she said. "Of course I am. Did you think I wasn't?"
"But Stephan is a boy's name," Sirius said helplessly. "Shouldn't it be Stephanie or something?"
"Aunt Leslie thought it was a good name for me," she said, looking confused as well.
"Is anyone bothered by the fact they can talk!?" said Lily, sounding a bit hysterical.
Severus just stared. "What type of dragon are they? They don't look like anything I've read about."
"We're just dragons," said Bob.
"This is so weird," muttered Peter.
Remus nodded. "I blame the Potters."
"Oi!" we (the Potters) said indignantly. Remus just shrugged at us.
"Where are we?" asked Fred, looking around with detached interest.
"Scotland," said Regulus as if he were talking to a random traveller and not a talking dragon. "I think, anyway."
"Where's that?" asked Bob and Stephan.
"Very far from home," said Fred wryly, glancing up at the sky.
"Oh," they grimaced, following his gaze.
"Where are you guys from?" Regulus asked.
"We live near the Dehvri Mountains," said Stephan. "But I don't think you've heard of them, little human thing."
"Little human thing?" repeated Bob.
She shrugged. "He's little and he's human, except the only humans we know don't fly so…"
"That would be pretty awesome if they did," said Bob. Fred nodded in agreement.
"Most people don't fly," said Sirius, chuckling. "We're kind of a weird bunch."
"Yeah," said Stephan. "So are our human friends."
"Well," said Fred as he glanced towards the sky. "We should get going- it was enjoyable meeting you, Regulus, Sirius, James, Lily, Severus, Remus, and Peter."
The three dragons took off and flew out of our sight, leaving us rather gobsmacked. I figured that, of all the strange things that happened to me, that definitely fell into the top ten.
"Did you see that too?" Lily asked me after a minute. I nodded slowly. "I think I need to sit down."
I nodded again, and we both plopped down unceremoniously to the forest floor. The others laughed at us, but most of them looked just as bewildered.
It was at this moment Tamo chose to show up. "Good afternoon, frie- James, Lily, why are you on the ground?"
"Talking dragons," Lily stammered.
Tamo blinked. "What on earth…? You and your friends run into some strange things."
Sirius's sword trainer, Marcik, walked up behind him. "I hear the forest floor is very comfortable at this time of year, is it not?"
We reddened and got to our feet.
"Sorry," I said. "We're just a bit bewildered and tired and, by now, really wishing our lives were normal."
"Normal," snorted Sirius. "As if."
"The dragons were nice," said Regulus cheerfully, still unaffected by the strangeness of it all.
Tamo laughed. "Come with us, we'll have some tea or something."
We followed them back to the Heart, which wasn't too far from here, apparently. The Heartians greeted us familiarly, before going about their daily business.
Evirah walked over and smiled. "Good afternoon. It's good to see you again."
"You too," I said.
"We saw the strangest thing a couple of minutes ago," she said. "Looked like three dragons flying overhead."
"It probably was," said Peter, grimacing. "We ran into them. Their names are Fred, Bob, and Stephan."
"Those are odd names for dragons," said Evirah.
"There are some things," said Marcik, "that even we do not know about our world."
"Nor would we ever want to," joked Tamo, and I raised an eyebrow. He shrugged at me.
"So," said Lily. "It turns out Sirius had another weird dream."
"Oh, please, not that," moaned Sirius.
"We think it was about the future," I said, and Evirah looked interested. "The problem is that one of us dies in the dream."
"Oh, well," she said. "You've messed up the future enough; you can just mess it up some more and things will turn out fine."
"Ha!" I said triumphantly, predominantly speaking to Lily and Severus. "That's what I said!"
Severus shook his head. "If we ever have to rely on James and Evirah to save us, we're all doomed."
Lily nodded in agreement, and I pouted.
"Hey, Remus!" called a voice. We all turned to see the chocolate vendor Remus had met once before. Remus's face lit up. "Come over here, I've got more chocolate."
"Sorry, guys," he said, mouth watering as he drifted in that direction. "Destiny calls."
We laughed and he left. Remus and his chocolate.
"I'm going to go wander, too," said Peter, stretching a walking off. Severus nodded in agreement, seeming torn between staying here and visiting the potions shop down the road. I nodded towards it, and he walked off as well.
Evirah shook her head. "It seems your friends do the same thing whenever they're here."
I nodded, slightly amused.
"So," said Sirius, "got any advice that doesn't include us messing up the future more?"
Evirah blinked. "I thought that was a pretty good plan. If you tell us who dies, we can prevent it that way."
Sirius hesitated, before narrowing his eyes and concentration and groaning. "Of all the times for my memory to fail me! I can't even remember! I just remember it's someone I care about."
"Here's an idea," said Regulus. "How 'bout none of us go to Hogsmeade that day?"
We stared at him.
"That's… actually a good idea," I said slowly.
Regulus puffed up indignantly. "I'm smart!"
"We never said otherwise," Lily assured him. "You're just a bit… special… that's all."
He seemed placated by this.
"The only problem," I said, "is that we're not sure if it'll be that day or another Hogsmeade visit."
"We could just avoid Hogsmeade," suggested Lily.
The three of us gawped at her.
"Avoid Hogsmeade?" I said in disbelief.
"But- but- Zonko's!" said Sirius. "And Honeyduke's!"
"We can't just avoid Hogsmeade!" spluttered Regulus.
Lily face-palmed.
"Why do I get the awful feeling," she said, "that it's going to be one of you three that dies?"
"They're boys," said Evirah. "By definition, they're natural idiots."
"Oi!" we shouted.
Then I frowned, and recalled all the stupid things we had ever done. "Actually… that seems about right."
Regulus stopped too, before nodding. "We're smart idiots, though."
"Most of the time," added Sirius.
Lily just shook her head, looking exasperated. "You are impossible."
We all exchanged looks before beaming. "Thank you."
