Chapter 7: No Answer
Cammie's P.O.V.
I got of bed and the first thing I did was go check on Liz. I opened the door and the room was a mess. Everything was scattered across the room as if a tornado had just torn through.
My eyes frantically searched the room until they fell on Grant who lay unconscious on the floor. I knelt down to him and noticed he was bleeding.
Immediately, I shot up and scanned the room for Liz. She wasn't there.
"Macey, Zach!" I called.
"What?" Zach asked as he entered the room. His eyes widened at the sight and he stopped dead in his tracks upon seeing Grant on the floor.
"What happened?" Macey asked when she walked in.
I shook my head, unable to form an answer to her question. "I don't know. I… I don't know."

We set Grant down outside his room on the couch.
"When is he going to wake up?" Macey asked.
"I don't know," I sighed. It seemed that that was the answer to everything lately.
"What do you think happened?" I asked.
I looked at Zach and he hadn't said a word. His face was straight and stiff, his eyes glassy and emotionless.
"Zach, are you ok?" I stepped over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder.
Zach didn't look at me as he shrugged off my hand. Instead, he turned away and walked to his room.
"I think he's in shock," Macey guessed.
I shook my head and looked over at his door. "Something's different."
Macey nodded in agreement and she refocused her attention on Grant. Silence filled the room and I ran a hand through my hair, trying to figure out where everything went wrong.

I decided to talk to Zach after no word from him for a couple of hours. I knocked on his door and waited to hear his voice. No answer.
I sighed and decided to barge in, worry trumping all the warnings in my head. I opened the door and entered.
Zach was facing away from the door, seated in front of an open window. I frowned and walked up to him.
"Zach, you never act like this."
He didn't respond to the statement and continued to stare ahead as if I wasn't in the room.
"Zach?" I tried to get his attention once more and once again he said nothing.
I scoffed and shook my head. "Fine. I guess I'll leave you to it."
"You just don't get it," his voice was low and barely audible, but the sentence hit me hard and quick.
"Get what?" I asked.
"What's happening," he replied.
"Then explain it to me," I sighed and approached him. "Tell me what is happening and make me understand. Don't leave me in the dark."
He shook his head and his eyes returned to the window. "I shouldn't have to explain it to you."
"Zach," I began.
"Look at the hidden picture. It's not what's in front but it's what is invisible," he interrupted.
I frowned and shook my head. "Why are you being so cryptic?"
Zach rolled his eyes at my reply and stood up from his seat. "You should've never came."
"What is that supposed to mean?" I sighed, finding myself asking questions once again.
"It means, do you know what happens after?" he asked.
"We go home," I shrugged.
"What home? I don't know if you've noticed, but I don't exactly have a home," Zach reminded me.
I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. He was right, of course. Where was he going to go after this?
"Everyone that I care about is disappearing. Jonas is gone and Grant might never wake up," he sighed. "I don't have answers anymore. I-I don't know what to do."
"It's not your fault," I told him.
Zach scoffed at the statement and he turned his back to me. He walked over to his bed and pointed at the door. "Just… can you go?"
I looked at Zach and in that moment I saw something different. He didn't have his mask up anymore. He wasn't the mysterious spy from Blackthorne. He was just Zach, the boy who had nothing left.
"I'm not running anymore," I stated as I walked to his side. "You keep pushing me away, but I won't let you anymore."
I took his hand in mine and gave it a small squeeze. "We can do this."
Zach's head dropped and he let out a deep breath. "You have to go, Gallagher girl."
"You're not alone. People can help," I tried to convince him. "We'll be fine, okay? We'll get-,"
Suddenly, Zach groaned and he snatched his hand away from me. "You're the only one I have left!"
My face fell at the statement and I watched as he began to pace the room.
"I'm scared Cammie. I don't know what's going to happen and I'm freaking scared," his voice was timid and his eyes were dark.
"You called me Cammie," I frowned.
Zach laughed and his eyes returned to me. "That's your name, isn't it?"
My lips twitched into a smile and I took a seat on his bed before patting the space next to me. He sat beside me wordlessly and he took my hand in his. Our fingers interlocked and I looked up at him, trying desperately to show him that it was going to be okay without saying a word.
"I don't know what's going to happen either, but I trust you," I told him. "I trust you."
A half-smile appeared on his face and he looked down at me, his eyes searching for something. He opened his mouth, ready to say something, but before he could a familiar voice was heard through the door.
Zach's eyes shot up and we both ran out of the room.
Grant's head turned to us upon us entering the room.
"They took her," were the first words that left his lips.
"We know," I sighed.
Grant nodded and he suddenly directed his attention to Zach and nodded. And just like that a fire sparked in Zach and his signature smirk filled his face.
"How do you guys feel about a road trip?"
