Chapter 10: The Other Side
Liz's P.O.V.
My head hung low as I was dragged to the bathroom. When we approached the door they opened it and shoved me inside.
"You have 5 minutes," the man spat out.
He closed the door behind me and for the first time that week I was alone.
I looked around the bathroom and tried desperately to find an escape. A sink, toilet, and shower occupied the space. I spotted a window at the very top of the room.
I can reach it if I climb on the toilet and then on the sink, or I could climb the water pipe at the back of the room that leads to… I lifted my head and saw an air vent. I walked over to the pipe and tapped it gently with my fist to make sure it was safe. I latched on to the sides and began to pull myself up. All those years in P&E are finally paying off.
All of a sudden the sound of a creaking door filled my ears and I lost my grip on the pipe. I fell back and hit the hard tiled floor.
"She tried to escape," The man shouted behind him. He walked up to me and pulled me up by my aching arm, leading me out of the bathroom to a set of heavy metal doors.
The doors opened and revealed a dark room with someone standing at the back.
"She tried to escape," The man said as he tightened his grip on my arms.
The person in the back of the room suddenly turned to face me. They stepped out of the darkness and revealed themselves.
It was a boy who was maybe two or three years older than me. He smiled and watched me with pale green eyes, not saying a word. He didn't need to though. Something about him screamed, I know something you don't.
Chills ran down my spine as I focused more on him. The more I stared at him, the more I couldn't help but think that he looked like someone I knew.
"Zach," his name fell out of my mouth breathlessly.
"So you know Zach," he smirked. "Well, that makes this even better."
I lifted me head once more and examined him. I couldn't help but stare into his eyes. They looked so innocent, but just by looking I knew he'd seen too much in his life just like Zach.
"I guess I should introduce myself," he said before offering me his hand to shake. "I'm Caleb. Caleb Goode."
Cammie's P.O.V.
"This sounds like the plot of one of those horrible telenovelas where the main character reveals that they have a long lost brother," Macey pointed out.
"Not long lost, but I wish," Zach sighed.
"Is everyone besides you in your family, I don't know, trying to kill us!" I shouted.
"I don't know," Zach shrugged.
"That wasn't a question for you to answer," I replied.
"Look, all I know is that he either has Liz, or he was the one that took Bex and Jonas," Zach told us. "Or maybe he has both, but in different locations."
"Why are they separated?" Macey asked.
"Cause we're not dealing with one person, we're dealing with an army," Zach revealed.
"Should we be worried?" I asked.
Grant and Zach exchanged looks.
"Yeah, worry would be an appropriate emotion," Grant nodded.
"That wasn't reassuring," I sighed.
"It wasn't supposed to be," Grant shrugged.
"Ok, we're going to go out," Macey said as she dragged me out the room. "We need time to think."
"Should we really be taking walks right now?" I asked.
"We have to get out of here," Macey exclaimed. "I feel suffocated."
"Where are we even going to go?" I questioned.
Macey shrugged and opened the door. "I don't care. I just need to get away from the lies."
Liz's P.O.V.
I lay on the cold stone floor staring at the ceiling. My head was still throbbing from falling earlier and all my limbs ached. I sighed and I tried to rest, having already accepted defeat.
I was sick of being stuck, but what was there left to do?
I turned my head and looked at the wall beside me. My eyes ran over its surface and I suddenly realized that something was off about the material in the middle portion.
I stood up and walked over to the wall, my hands gliding across it searching for some sort of loose brick. I pressed my hands against the stones and I felt a reaction. A low creaking sound filled my ears and the wall opened, revealing a dark path. I turned to look behind me, making sure I was alone, before facing my freedom. I began to walk through the darkness and grope at the nothingness around me.
I kept one hand on the stone wall so I could follow some sort of path. All of a sudden a bright light showered the tunnel.
I looked up and saw an opening with a ladder that led outside. I climbed up the ladder and through the opening into the outside world.
Grant's P.O.V.
I made my way down the crowded streets of Chad. As I turned a corner, I heard a scream from a narrow alley. I made my way to the secluded area and walked in only to run into another body. I fell back and the person collapsed on top of me.
"Grant?" The person asked.
"Liz?" I asked recognizing her voice.
She stood up and offered me her hand.
"We have to run," her voice was full of urgency and I shook my head, not quite understanding her fear.
"Why?" I asked.
My question was immediately answered once I realized we were surrounded.
I offered her a small smile and looked around. "I'm guessing that's why."
Liz and I stood back to back as we searched the area for an opening, but everything was blocked.
Yep, we've been found.
