"First priority, 24, Female, Single GSW on her abdomen, lost conscious about 30 minutes ago." A paramedic shouted to the entire ER.
A young male doctor and 2 female nurses quickly rushed to the paramedic's side pulling the gurney further inside the ER.
"What happened?" The doctor asked as he took out a flashlight from his pocket.
"She was after the suspect on the case she currently working on and got executed in process. There is a statement that the suspect aiming on her head but missing just in time the police came." The paramedic said.
The doctor nodded while he checked Emily's eyes and looked at the temporary bandages on her stomach. "Alright, we should get her on the OR right now. She is likely about to hyperventilating. Come on folks, let's go." He yelled.
The paramedic and the doctor quickly rushed Emily to the OR. Behind them, the wide eyed Anthony watching with a worried expression, he couldn't believe that he was too late and didn't see it coming at all.
30 Minutes Earlier
Anthony watched from afar as he realized what was going to happen in front of him.
"Speed up the damn car!" He shouted as he took his gun out.
The driver sped up the car and then stopped a few feet away from the entrance of the construction site. Anthony was the first one to jump out of the car and running toward the construction site with full speed.
What he saw next definitely has reached his limit. "No!" He shouted before firing his gun straight to James' right shoulder but it was useless. It's because the same time Anthony's bullet hit James' shoulder it's the same time he fired and the bullet hit Emily's stomach in no time as the younger officer flinched and let out a silent screaming.
"No!" He yelled again and fired again, this time hitting his left leg.
"Fuck!" James yelled as he dropped to the ground.
The older police quickly rushed to Emily's side and shook her body softly.
"Officer Fields, are you okay?" He asked, even though he knew that Emily already can't open her eyes.
The other policemen went to check on James before they turned their attention to Anthony and Emily. "Call the ambulance!" One of them shouted.
"Come on Officer, wake up!" He shook her again but only being responded by more blood pouring from her stomach.
Anthony quickly realized this and took of his coat to covered Emily's bleeding stomach and pressed it lightly. "Where is the damn ambulance?!" He shouted.
"They are on their way. In the meantime, what should we do to this creep?" One of the officers said and then pointing to James who was being carried with his hands cuffed behind his back.
"Bring him back to the station, I shot on his non-fatal part, he should be okay. Give the report to the chief and sent the copy to me." He said to the officer.
"Okay." He nodded and then turned his head as he heard the ambulance approaching. "The ambulance is here, let's go."
As the paramedic get out from the ambulance, Anthony waved and motioned them to him. The paramedics quickly get Emily to the stretcher and carried her to the ambulance. Anthony decided to come with them and told them the detail that he knew about the wound.
He stared at Emily sympathetically as his walkie talkie went off. He quickly answered it "512, what's up?"
"531 over here, the reports already received." The other voice replied.
"Okay, can you tell everybody at the station? And find Officer Fields family phone number and call them when I told you to." He said over the walkie talkie.
"Roger." The other voice ended.
Anthony's face was unreadable as the paramedic was rushing to stop the bleeding on Emily's stomach and not letting her going into shock state.
Present Time
"The bullet stuck." The young doctor grumbled as he tried to pull out the bullet.
"Get into more access through the left. She is losing too much blood." The other doctor said.
"Somebody please determine her blood type and bring some packs in!" The young doctor yelled.
"I'm on it." One of the nurses stepped in and packed some blood from Emily's open wound and brought it to the lab immediately.
"Aha! Finally!" The young doctor pulled out the bullet and put it aside.
Just as the doctor put the bullet, the machine start beeping loudly, the entire machine does.
"What the hell?" The other doctor asked. "What's wrong?" He asked the anesthesiologist.
"She is in shock. I can determine that she is losing too much blood." He said while reading the machine and then back to the charts.
"Damn, where is the blood?" The doctor yelled. "Come on Officer, don't give up on me." He said to an unconscious Emily.
Meanwhile, outside the OR, Anthony can't stop pacing worriedly. Shock was full on his face, cold sweats slowly dripping from his head, her eyes glued on the OR door in front of him. While his mind remained on Emily, a young officer walked to him holding a walkie talkie and patted his shoulder softly.
"I'm sorry Detective but the chief want to have a word with you." The officer said while handed him the walkie talkie.
"Thanks Daniel." Anthony smiled while taking the walkie talkie from the officer and held it to his ear.
"This is Mark Anthony speaking."
"Mark!" The chief yelled causing Anthony to slightly pulling the walkie talkie from his ear. "How could you let that happen?! Fields is our best officer!"
"I'm really sorry chief Daniels. I shouldn't let her catch that asshole alone."
"You really should tell her that when she woke up later. Now I want you to back to the station, you have a few jobs here. You know what it is." The chief said firmly.
"But…. Officer Fields…."
"She will have a few officers by her side. We already called her relatives and they are on their way here and when they are here, I need you to explain everything to them. Got it?"
Anthony sighed. "Okay."
The chief disconnected the call. Anthony quickly stood up from his position and walked towards the exit. He gave a brief nod to the other officer before climbed to his car and drove back to the station.
His cellphone beeping loudly as he then recognized the number immediately, he saved the number in case the person had a hard time reaching for Emily. He slowly hit the answer button and raised the phone to his ear.
"Hello?"
"Detective, is that you?" The other person asked.
"Yes, it's me. Did you receive the call from the Philly PD?" Anthony said hesitantly.
"Yeah, did she okay?" The other person asked worriedly.
"I don't know. I have to go back to the station and talk to her parents. I'm really sorry. I should have been there with her"
He heard sniffles on the other line making his guilt multiply. "Spencer, I'm really sorry."
"You shouldn't have sorry. That's your job right? I'm really hoping I could go there but I couldn't since I have patients here." Spencer said sadly.
"Don't worry. I'll make sure she's alright." Anthony said although he seemed unsure.
"I promise I would go there today if I got the train."
"I will book a ticket for you as my apology, but you said have patients right?"
"I will ask if I could get another resident to cover me up but I have to come back on Friday because I have surgery."
Anthony sighed. "I'll make sure you get the ticket for today, I'll call you later okay?"
"Thanks detective." Spencer said softly.
Anthony disconnected the call while he quickly dialed another number. "Josh? Its detective Anthony, could you book a train ticket from Harrisburg for tonight? And sent it to 727-324-890, I booked the ticket for the owner of that number."
He listened the other person typed and then said that the ticket already booked. He said his thanks and sent a quick text to Spencer letting her know that she already have her ticket.
45 Minutes Later, Hospital
"Is she okay doctor?" One of the interns asked.
"She is losing too much blood but she'll be alright." The doctor said while finished checking Emily's vital.
"Will she be out from ICU soon?" One of the Interns asked.
"I hope so, once she could open her eyes." He answered bitterly. "Let's the third year handle her, now you guys should come with me."
They then leave once two doctors took over Emily. They gave her some antibiotics before making sure the other machines that hooked up to Emily are working properly.
"Well, I'll check her condition every 10 minutes while you get some rest." One of the doctors said.
"Okay, hope she will be alright, that was a mess of a gunshot."
The two doctors then leave Emily in the ICU. One of the doctors sat outside the ICU while writing some papers, he sipped on his coffee when suddenly a distraught looking woman approached him.
"Excuse me! Is Emily Fields in ICU?"
The doctor looked up. "Oh, yeah, she is. May I ask who you are?"
"I'm Spencer Hastings, I'm her girlfriend. The detective that was with her sent me here and he said that I should wait here while Emily's parents are coming down here." Spencer said in one breath.
The doctor raised both his hands as a sign for Emily to calm down. "Miss, take a deep breath first, okay? You're panicking."
Spencer quickly realized it and trying her best to keep herself calm down. Once she seemed not really panicking, she stared at the doctor. "Can I see her, please?"
The doctor pursed her lips. "I'm afraid you can't miss. She lost a lot of blood. I can't get you to come in without the chief permission."
"I just want to come in and see her for a while! I came down here from Harrisburg just to make sure she is alright!" Spencer almost yelled at the doctor.
"Miss, try to keep calm okay? There is this condition when people have trauma after being shot, we afraid that might happen to…"
"Ballistic trauma, I know. I'm a doctor too, please let me in, I just want to see her." Spencer said, almost begged.
The doctor felt pity for Spencer and he sighed. "Well, okay. I have to check up on her too anyway. Just wear that gown and you can follow me."
"Thank you!" Spencer exclaimed.
Once Spencer wore the hospital gown, she quickly followed the doctor inside the ICU. Her heart pounding wildly, she saw the curtains that covered all of Emily's gurney. She isn't sure how to handle this situation but before she knew it, the doctor opened the curtains to reveal Emily who was heavily bandaged around her abdomen and various machines that hooked up to her. Spencer froze on the spot. Seeing her girlfriend like this….. It's too much for her.
"You are allowed only 10 minutes after that, you need to wait outside. It looks like everything still worked in order. So, I just leave but when I came back. It's time for you to leave too." The doctor said.
"Okay." Spencer said barely above whisper.
The doctor smiled before walked past Spencer, leaving her behind. Spencer slowly walked to the edge of Emily's bed. Tears welled up on her eyes, she tried to say something but her throat seems didn't want to say anything. Her right hand slowly took Emily's free hand and squeezed it gently.
"Hey…." Somehow she managed to let her voice out.
It wasn't long before Spencer started crying and breaks down beside Emily's unconscious body. She kneeled down slowly, she put her chin on the edge of Emily's gurney while staring at the raven haired girl.
"I'm sorry Em… I'm sorry this had to happen to you…. You didn't deserve this…." Spencer said between sobs. She squeezed Emily's hand tighter. "Can you hear me? I knew that you can Emily…. I said that once to my patient and it did work somehow…. I just want to tell you that I love you…. Can you please at least open your eyes or move your hand to let me know that you are fighting?" Spencer said as she desperately trying to hold back her tears that spilled down freely from her eyes.
"Well Em, okay…. You know, when I was at surgery this morning, I thought of you before I begin but then the department called and they said you were shot, I don't know how to move from my spot and keep thinking if this is a dream and I really hope that it is." Spencer gently stroked Emily's hand. "Hey, do you think you can wake up sooner? I hate to say this but I have to go back Thursday because I have another surgery coming up. I hope you can wake up before that. Can you Em? For me?"
Spencer stared at Emily waiting for a sign but nothing came up. She didn't realize when the doctor came back to the room until he pat her shoulder.
"Hey, time's up. You can visit her again tomorrow."
Spencer slowly stood up but her hand never released Emily's. "Do you think she can wake up soon?"
The doctor looked at the papers that he carried then to the machines then to Emily. "I hope so, there are possibility of she won't wake up soon but it's very unlikely." He reassured her.
"Why is that?"
"Lost a lot of blood and the bullet almost hit her liver and the fact that she passed out before coming here. That's another case."
Spencer sighed, she turned to walk beside Emily. She leaned down to her ear and whispered. "I'll come back tomorrow love, I really hope that you will wake up soon. I love you."
With that, Spencer slowly released her grip from Emily's hand and walked outside as slow as possible while glancing back at her girlfriend while the doctor pulled the curtains back to block her vision form her beloved girlfriend.
