Chapter twenty-two: Saving Previously

Esme takes me in another hug. "Detective Moore and her colleagues are doing everything they can to find them."

"We have some more news." Alice storms into the room.

Edward's age: 24 years old – Savannah's age: 6 years old
Bella's age: 24 years – Nathan's age: 4 years old

Bella's POV

Alice's words are on repeat in my head. It takes me a second to register her words, but when I do, I stand up and immediately run downstairs. I see detective Moore talking to one of her officers.

"You have news?" I ask, putting my hand on her arm to turn her around.

"Bella," Esme says, coming down the stairs. "You have to stay calm."

"We have news indeed," Amy says.

"Tell me," I order her. "What's the news?"

"We found Mr. Cullen's car," she states.

"You found his car?" It sounds like a question, but I can't help it. I am almost afraid to ask the next question, but I need to know. "Did you find Edward?"

"Actually," Amy begins. "No, but we are doing everything we can to locate him and the kids."

"You are doing everything you can," I repeat void of emotion. "Do you know how many times I've had to hear you say that one sentence?"With every word I say, my voice becomes louder and louder.

Amy shakes her head. "I'm sorry, Miss S…"

"Don't apologize!" I yell. "I'm sick of it. I just want them back."

"Bella…" The soothing voice of Esme stops my rant. I turn around to see her as she opens her arms and I walk into them. I need her comfort. "It will be alright."

Esme leads me to the couch and sits with me.

"We found his car in one of the dangerous parts of Seattle, but we think Paul dropped it there," Amy explains when I've calmed down.

"Why?" I ask. "It's not like we know where he is."

"No, that's true," Amy answers truthfully. She sits in the chair across from me and looks me in the eye. "But it gives him more time, because now we are looking into the neighborhood where we found the car."

"What if you don't find him?" Esme asks Detective Moore. "What will happen then?"

For a split moment, I see Detective Moore's facial expression change from worried to scared and that tells me enough.

For the millionth time since the disappearance of my kids, I cry. "I've lost them."

"I know you don't want to hear me say the words, Miss Swan." Amy stands up, stepping closer to me. "But we are trying everything we possibly can do to find your kids and boyfriend."

I only nod and put my head on Esme's shoulder, this is becoming too much and I don't know if I could go through it if it weren't for the family's support.

I must have dozed off, because the next thing I know I'm back in my room.

A soft knock on my door alerts me that I'm not alone.

"Come in," I whisper, but apparently not loud enough, because the person on the other side, slowly opens the door.

"You're awake." Tanya walks in and sits next to me on my bed. "I'm so sorry."

I look up surprised. "Why are you apologizing?"

"If I'd paid more attention to my surroundings, the kids and Edward would still be here."

"You were paying attention, but you were taking something for the kids," I tell her. "Paul would have found a way to kidnap the kids another time."

"I feel guilty."

"I know, but," I wipe away some tears, "you have no reason to feel guilty."

I take her hands in mine and look straight into her eyes.

"It could have happened to anyone of us," I explain to her. "Yes, it happened to you, but that doesn't make you at fault."

Tanya hugs me and I slowly hug her back. "Thank you."

The door opens again and this time it is Amy who walks in. "I'm sorry to interrupt."

"What is it?" I ask, standing up.

"We have a location."

Amy's POV

"Gary, we have some good news," I say through the phone. I'm standing outside looking at the scene inside.

Bella Swan is hugging her mother-in-law and Alice Whitlock is trying to hug them.

"Tell me," Gary says.

"We investigated Edward's car and apparently he had to look up an address a few days ago."

"Do you mean on the day he went to bring Paul the ransom money?"

"Indeed, Gary. We know where Paul is located?"

"Okay, I will get a warrant and SWAT ready. What's the address?" he asks me.

"1258, 5th Avenue."

"We will be there in half an hour," he responds before hanging up the phone.

I walk back inside and give an order to one of my cops, before going to the address myself.

"Why would Paul hide here?" I ask Gary, while inspecting the house from afar.

His explanation sounds logical, but my mind couldn't grasp it.

"What if he changed his location, boss," Hawkes, another colleague of us, asks.

"Let's hope he isn't that smart," I answer him. I look at Gary. "What's the plan?"

"I think we barge into the house and surprise Paul Collins. If we are lucky Edward and the kids are in another room," Gary explains to us. "I was able to get a hold of the blue prints of the house and there are two entrances."

He shows us the blue print and where the entrances are located.

"Team One is going to take this entrance and Team Two takes this one," Gary says while pointing the two places on the map.

Both teams nod at his explanation and prepare their guns.

"What do we have to do?" I ask him.

"You will lead Team One, with me, and Hawkes will lead Team Two."

"Okay," I say, securing my bulletproof vest. Time seems to slow down while we are getting ready to burst in.

The moment arrives and my team slams the front door open. Both teams react quickly, when we take in the scene unfolding in front of us. Edward is pointing a gun at Paul Collins and the kids are in the doorway of the living room, calling out to him.

Our invasion causes Edward to lose control over the gun and a second later a shot rang through the whole house.

Edward's POV

Time.

I don't know how much time has passed since I arrived here.

"Daddy."

I look surprised at Nathan, who is looking hopefully at me, because I didn't expect him to call me that.

"Nathan, did you…?"

He nods before I can ask him the question. "I want you to be my Daddy," he says with conviction in his voice.

I hug him close, but when he hisses out in pain, I pull him back.

"Are you okay?" I ask him.

"My leg hurts."

I look at his left leg, where the bullet hit him, it doesn't look too good. "We have to get to the doctor fast," I mumble.

"Will he be okay, Daddy?" Savannah asks me.

"I hope so, Sweetie. I really hope so."

"I don't want to lose my little brother," she tells me.

The words both kids are saying astonish me. I'm not sure I can give them the things they want. I don't want to give them empty promises.

"He isn't your little brother, Sweetie," I tell my daughter carefully.

"Not now, but I know he will be," she says strongly.

I smile at her, but I try not to let her know that I'm worried. I wish I had her faith and be sure that everything would be okay.

RL

The kids eventually fell asleep, and I am glad, because their optimism was only bringing my mood down.

They are both convinced that we will get out of here, but I'm sure that Paul would not let us out so easily.

"Good, they're asleep." I look up to see Paul standing in the door opening of our prison.

"What do you want?" I ask him bitterly. I'm getting tired of his games, but I won't risk the children's lives.

"For you to come with me." He points his gun at me and to protect Nathan and Savannah, I follow his order quickly.

He walks into the living room and suddenly stops walking and turns around. There standing face to face with the man that has made our life a living hell. Looking him in the eye, I try to comprehend everything that has happened in the past couple of days.

If you told me ten years ago, I would be standing in front of the love of my life's ex-husband, I would have laughed in your face and told you that I would be already married to the love of my life. Ten years ago everything started, which led to this point. Ten years ago, my life was supposed to be completely different. I would have been a musician who studied in a dream school; I would be married to my high school sweetheart and had a kid or two. Now my life looked completely different and not what I expected.

Okay, I was married to my high school sweetheart, but she isn't a sweetheart anymore. I also have a kid, and the kid isn't even mine by blood.

I look at the guy in front of me, and because of all the anger I felt for him, I punch him.

Before I can hit him for a second time, he punches me back and I hit the ground. I come back to my feet looking my attacker in the eyes.

"Is this how you handled her?"

He starts laughing."No, I hit her far worse!"

I punch him in the face again, but I make sure it's harder than before. He staggers backwards.

"I barely felt it, 'cause you hit like a girl," I sneer. That is the stupidest thing to say, but at this moment, I just don't care. He hurt my girl and my kids, and he is going to pay for it.

In the struggle, the gun that was in his pants falls onto the ground. I hit him a fourth time and when he finally falls down; I sit on him and hit him again a couple of times.

My eyes land on the gun and I try to reach it, but Paul pushes me backwards and hits me once again in the face.

"Loverboy, you will not win this fight."

I hit him again and on all fours I crawl to the gun. Paul grabs my leg and tries to stop me. He's also crawling to get to it.

I can't let him get the gun; I have to grab it first. Otherwise, we will all get killed. With the thought of saving my children at the center on my thoughts, that's right I don't care whose blood runs through their veins they are mine! I stomp him with my foot as hard as I can and stretch out my arm. I can almost feel the gun with my fingertips; I just need to get a little bit closer.

I feel Paul reach for my leg again and I stomp him once more, before crawling closer to the gun. I take it and aim it at the man who ruined our lives.

"You don't have the guts to pull the trigger," he taunts me.

"If I were you I wouldn't try to tempt me," I answer, trying to stand up without taking my eyes off Paul.

"As if you could kill me." He keeps provoking me with a sneer on his face. "You're way too honest for doing such cruel act."

My finger goes to the trigger and the only thing on my mind is to get rid of this excuse of a man and save my family.

"Do it!" he yells. "Come on!"

I hesitate for a split second and almost drop the gun.

"I was right; you don't have the guts to do it." Paul laughs at me. His words only anger me more.

And just as I'm about to pull the trigger, three things happen at once. The kids' voices rang through the room, the front door slams open, and a shot is fired, echoing through the house.
