Life during a war
Chapter 24: Trust
Zoe shows us to the place where we will be staying. It's a huge room full of beds, single sized beds, and there are lights on the walls above each bed.
"Make yourself comfortable, I will come and get you for dinner, which is in an hour." She says before leaving.
Turns out there are sixteen beds in this room, meaning there are three spare ones. Tobias and I pick beds in the far left hand corner of the room, we push them together so we can lay together at night. The others all pick their beds, not going for the ones nearest to the door. There is a bathroom attached, it has a bath, a walk in shower, a toilet, a urinal and two sinks in it, one for boys and one for girls. There are some closets and drawers which people start packing their clothes into, but Tobias and I just sit on our bed and rest.
"We can't trust them. Just like my mum said in the letter. We especially can't trust David." I tell him.
"I know. We'll be okay. I won't let anything happen to any of you." He says, taking my hand in his.
The baby kicks and I groan, Tobias looks at me, worried.
"Don't worry, it was just a kick." I tell him.
"Okay." He says, kissing my stomach. "I'm going to get you some food, get some rest." He stands and leaves me, but not the room. He just walks over to Hana who has the bags of food with her.
He comes back a few minutes later with two apples and two chocolate chip muffins. He sits back on the bed and gives me one of each. I start eating the apple.
"How long do you think we'll be staying here?" I ask.
"I don't know. Hopefully not that long." He answers.
I hear the door open but don't look at it until I hear Tori say, "George?" in a shocked voice.
"Hey, Tori." He says guiltily.
I watch as Tori slaps him but then embraces him, sobbing into his chest as he wraps his arms around her.
"Who's George?" I ask Tobias.
"Tori's brother." He answers.
Now I remember. Wait.
"Isn't he supposed to be dead?" I ask.
"So is Amar, the same thing probably happened to George." He says. That makes sense.
I am secretly hoping that my parents are going to walk into the room at any moment. But they won't. They can't. I watched them die. Right in front of me. It wasn't faked. It can't have been. Otherwise I would have been able to tell.
"Tris, are you okay?" Tobias asks me, bringing his hand up to my face and wiping away a tear I didn't know had fallen.
"I-I just want my parents." I tell him as more tears fall.
"I know. But I'm here, I'm not going to leave you." He says, embracing me.
"I know." I say. Some secret part of me wants my brother to be here as well, but then I remember what he did and I take it back. Tobias, our baby, and our friends are the only family I have left now.
It isn't long before an hour has passed and Zoe comes and gets us for dinner. We follow her to the dining hall which is bright and is very different from the one back in Dauntless. We find an empty table and sit at it, Zoe leaves and sits with her friends. Everyone who lives and works here is sitting, eating and laughing. There is an assortment of food in a line in the centre of each table.
We all grab the food we think looks nice, the food is also very different from what it was in Dauntless, before the factionless took over.
Everyone else in the room stares at us like we're strangers, which we are, they are to us as well. They stare at us like we're dangerous, like we're different, like we don't belong here. Which is quite true, but it's annoying.
"I really don't like it here." Lynn says.
"None of us do, Lynn." Uriah says.
"We can't trust them. Any of them. Especially David." I tell them.
"How do you know?" Shauna asks.
"Well one, they've been watching us, two, we're experiments, and three, my mum said in the letter she wrote me that we can't trust David." I explain.
"I don't trust any of them." Zeke says, they all nod, I nod too.
"What are we going to do? We can't trust them, Tris is pregnant, and this food is horrible." Uriah says because only he would mention how bad the food is. But it is actually horrible, though, I have no choice but to eat it.
"Well, we just have to stick it out and make sure we don't have to stay here long. The quicker the war back in Chicago sorts itself out, the quicker we can go back. But we have to act like we trust them when we are around them otherwise they will suspect something." Tobias says.
"The only way Chicago is going to sort itself out is if Evelyn dies and the factionless go back to where they were because they're cowards and are only doing what they are doing because Evelyn is telling them to do that. Sorry Four, but it's true." Marlene says.
"I know." He says. "But maybe there is another way."
"Like what?" Christina asks.
"I don't know yet, but I don't want Tris staying here too long." He answers.
…
Later that night Tobias and I are lying in bed, everyone else is asleep, we are facing each other.
"I don't like this place." I tell him.
"I know. But hopefully we won't have to be here too long. None of us want to be here too long, we don't trust them. I will make sure everything is okay, though, I promise." He says.
"I know. But, I'm scared." I say.
"I am too. But everything is going to be okay. We're here so we can get more food into you, we're not here for them. If they need us they'll have to give us a damn good reason to stay." He says.
I nod.
"Get some sleep. You need it." He says.
"Okay. Goodnight, Tobias. I love you." I say.
"Goodnight, Tris. I love you, too." He says.
And I drift into a peaceful sleep.
Hey Ravens, sorry for the wait.
