Life during a war
Chapter 31: Ideas
Later that night we are all in our room, discussing ways to stop David and Matthew from dropping memory serum on Chicago. Our home. Amar, George and Zoe are with us, they're the only people we can trust and they all hate David.
"We need to kill them. That way they can't do anything." Uriah says.
"There could be other people working on that plan with them, if there is we don't know who they are and we'd need to kill them as well to make sure that plan doesn't go ahead." Will replies.
"Some of us can go back to the city to inoculate everyone." Marlene says.
"One, there are some people that deserve to have their memories wiped, two, we don't know where any inoculations are, and three, even if we did there might not be enough for everyone." Tobias says.
"I know where it is, but there definitely isn't enough for everyone in the city." George says.
"Well, we could inoculate ourselves, our friends and families. Maybe some of the leaders as well so we have leaders that are capable of leading, like Johanna or Jack, she's a good leader." Christina says.
"But then Marcus, Peter and Caleb will still have their memories and will be able to still go after us. Marcus will believe he could still be a leader as no one will remember all the shit he's done, apart from everyone we inoculate, and us. Peter and Caleb will be guaranteed leadership positions or will be his assistants and they will still come after us, thinking they have more power." I say.
"We could give them memory serum so they don't remember anything." Zeke suggests.
"Where are we going to get memory serum?" I question.
"I know where that is. I also know that there is a room where someone can go in and set off memory serum in the Bureau, all we have to do is inoculate ourselves, send someone in and let it spread through the Bureau. Everyone we don't inoculate will forget everything except the basics they need to live. It will mean David and Matthew, as well as whoever else is working with them will forget what they were going to do, and if Marcus, Peter and Caleb are still here, they will forget everything as we won't inoculate them." George informs us.
"We can't do that." Amar tells him.
"Why not?" Tobias asks.
"Whoever goes into that room will die." Amar says.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"The room is rigged so that if someone breaks into the room death serum will start spreading throughout the room, killing anyone who enters it. Even divergents. None of us can go into that room and survive. There is a suit that slows down the process of dying, it slows it down enough so that you will be able to set off the memory serum, but you will die." Amar says.
"So, no matter what we decide to do, we're screwed." Lynn says.
"Exactly." Amar says.
"I'll do it." My mum says.
"What? Mum, no, you can't go in there." I say as tears start to fill my eyes.
"Yeah, I can. I'm the strongest Divergent out there, no serum works on me, I can survive the death serum." She says.
"What are you talking about?" I ask.
"I have aptitude for all five factions, the reason you only got aptitude for three of them is because your father isn't divergent, which caused two factions to be eliminated from your aptitude. Hardly any serums work on you, but none of them work on me. I will survive. I read about the death serum before, and David told me about it before I left to live in the city, any divergent that has an aptitude of three factions or more can survive the death serum without being inoculated against it." She explains.
"I can't let you go in there." I tell her as a tear slips out of my eye and rolls down my cheek.
"I have to, you and I are the only ones that can survive the death serum in this room and you're pregnant so there is no way I'm letting you go in there, because if the baby isn't divergent or only has an aptitude for two factions he will die. Though both you and Tobias are divergent there is a small chance that your son won't be, it may be small but I'm not taking any chances, so it has to be me going in there, or no one." She says.
"Please, don't go in there." I say quietly as more tears roll down my cheeks
She pulls me into her and envelopes me in her arms, I cry into her shoulder.
"I have to sweetie, I have to go in there." She tells me, kissing the top of my head.
"I can't lose you, mum." I cry.
"You won't lose me, I promise, you won't lose me." She whispers.
"No matter what we decide to do, we have to do it soon, preferably before they are planning on releasing the memory serum." Zoe says.
"Yeah, but us releasing memory serum here, won't stop what is going on in the city. We will also have to sort that out." Christina replies.
"What if some of us go back to the city with some memory serum or with a peace agreement they can use to stop the war, whilst Natalie goes into the weapons lab to spread memory serum through the Bureau, but we all have to be inoculated first, against the memory serum." Amar says.
It's silent, I am still crying into my mum's shoulder so I don't know what they are doing, probably nodding or something.
"Well, we can pick this up tomorrow, we need some rest and it's getting pretty late." Tobias says, I can tell he is doing it for me, so that I don't have to continue hearing the plans to send my mother to her possible death when I have only just got her back.
My mum and Tobias lead me to my bed as Amar, George and Zoe leave the room and everyone else gets into their beds.
After my mum has said goodnight and has kissed my forehead she goes to her bed and climbs into it. I snuggle into Tobias' chest and he wraps his arms around me as I cry into his chest.
"Everything's going to be okay, I promise." He tells me quietly.
I just nod, not knowing what to say or do.
It isn't long before I fall asleep, silently praying that everything is going to be all right. That my friends, and my mum, and my baby, and Tobias, all of whom are my family, are all going to be all right.
Hey Ravens, sorry for the wait.
I will update again as soon as I can.
