Life during a war
Chapter 34: Back
When I have opened my eyes I sit up and look around, I notice that a few things are different about the room. One, the rhythmic beeping noise that comes from my mum's heart monitor. Two, the fact my mum has needles in her arm that are sending things like blood, nutrients and pain medicine into her body. And three, the fact that there is an incubator in the room along with some other equipment that wasn't here before.
Hana is currently checking on my mum but she comes over to me when she notices that I am staring at the incubator.
"You okay, Tris?" She asks.
"Why is there an incubator in the room? Am I in labour? Is something wrong with the baby? What's going on?" I start panicking again and she starts trying to calm me down. It works, I just breathe when she breathes.
"Tris, the reason I have bought an incubator in here is because with everything that has been going on recently, you've been really close to going into premature labour I just want to be prepared. I'm not saying you will go into premature labour, but with everything going on you've been so close I just want to be prepared for everything. I've got everything I need now, whether you go into labour prematurely or not. But hopefully the war in the city will stop and we can be home by the time you go into labour so we won't need any of it." She explains. I nod. "I mean you nearly went into labour last night, you just started panicking again. You're a teenager, meaning the odds of you going into labour early are higher than someone in their twenties. So, try not to stress out, but if you do I assure you I will do my best to make sure you don't go into labour this early, and if you do, I'm prepared, okay. I just want to help you Tris. I want to make sure that you and your baby are okay." I nod again.
"Thank you."
"No problem."
"How's my mum?" I question, starting to get worried but trying not to stress out completely.
"She's doing just fine. The bullets didn't hit any vital organs or anything. We managed to get the bullets out and stop the bleeding. We've stitched her up. But she did lose quite a bit of blood so we're giving her a blood transplant, some nutrients so she can stay healthy whilst she's still sleeping, and some morphine. She'll be fine."
"Have you heard back from Tobias and the others yet?"
"Yeah, about half an hour ago they called to say that Evelyn has stepped down and the factionless are no longer controlling everything. In fact the factionless are leaving the city, along with Evelyn and they're never coming back. They used memory serum on all of them and they were all so confused they managed to get them out of the city so no further conflict could harm the city. When they have everything sorted out they will head back. They said they'd call again when they're on their way. "
So Evelyn didn't choose to be his mum.
She didn't choose him.
…
Two hours later and I am sitting on a chair, next to my mum's bed, holding her hand in mine. She still hasn't woken up.
Everyone else has gone to the entrance of the Bureau to greet everyone when they arrived. They called a little while ago saying they were on their way.
I don't know how much longer I've been sitting here when I hear the door open. I look up and see Tobias looking at me, worried.
I stand and rush over to him, he rushes over to me too and wraps his arms around me when we meet.
"I was so worried when I didn't see you at the entrance with everyone else. Is your mum okay?" He asks. He's so selfless.
"She's fine, she hasn't woken up yet though. I missed you."
"I missed you, too."
"I'm sorry your mum didn't choose you."
"She was going to until I said that she had to agree to be kind and learn to love you and the baby. But don't worry, I have all I need in my life right here. I have you. I have our son. I have everyone that is here with us, our friends, and your mum. We're all a family. I don't need her."
"I love you, Tobias."
"I love you, too, Tris."
We kiss passionately until we hear someone clearing their throat at us. It sounds like my mum.
I look at her and see that she is now awake.
I rush over to her and sit on the chair I was sitting in before Tobias came back. I take her hand in mine again.
"You're awake." I say, smiling.
"I told you I wouldn't leave you." She's also smiling.
"I love you, mum."
"I love you, too, sweetie."
"Tris, why is there an incubator in the room?" Tobias asks, worried.
"Uh, well, with everything that's been going on I've been stressed, and panicked, a lot and Hana thought she'd get one just in case I went into premature labour. I also kinda nearly went into labour last night but Shauna managed to calm me down before anything happened. I also nearly went into labour this morning, but Hana calmed me down before anything happened. She just wanted to get everything ready so she was prepared for whatever happened." I reply.
"You nearly went into labour and I wasn't here with you." Tobias says.
"Tobias, I'm fine, okay. I'm not in labour. Everything is fine. Just, come over here, please."
He nods and sits on the edge of the bed, taking my spare hand in his, his knee against mine.
"So, what's happening in the city?" Mum asks Tobias.
"Well…" He tells us about how Evelyn and the factionless have left the city and have no recollection of everything that has happened, thanks to the memory serum they gave them. He tells us about how the faction system is still in place but the factionless sector is going to be renovated and no one is going to be factionless again. There are going to be two leaders for each faction, when we get back there is going to be an election that everyone in every faction will attend and they will pick who they want to be leaders in each of the factions. When children turn sixteen they still have to take a test and get to choose what faction they want to be part of, but being Divergent is no longer a problem. Also, 'faction before blood' no longer exists, you are allowed to see family whenever you want, as long as it isn't during your working hours. That is if you have transferred. A group of Abnegation and Dauntless are working on rebuilding the factionless sector into nice new buildings, homes, etc. along with help from the Erudite. "We are going back to the way the faction system used to be. We are going back to the old way of life, where we respect the factions' manifestos. Dauntless are no longer going to be cruel, etc. Everything is going to be better, now."
"When can we go home?" I ask.
"As soon as we want." He answers, smiling.
I smile too.
"But I think we should wait for Natalie to heal first."
I nod, though I really want to go back home we have to wait for my mum to heal before doing anything.
"Don't worry, I'll be healed before you know it. Then we can go home and sort out a room for your son and then live happily ever after." My mum says before laughing, I laugh too, so does Tobias.
Though, I hope we do get to live happily ever after.
Hey Ravens, how are you?
I will update as soon as I can.
