Life during a war
Chapter 38: Nursery
I am thirty four weeks pregnant and my friends/family have now finished the nursery. But we have to wait for Tobias to get back from his meeting before I am allowed to see it. That's okay, though. We should see it together anyway.
There is a meeting every week to discuss things in the city, and how to improve the quality of life.
I have not been going to them because of how far along I am in my pregnancy. However, I will have to start going to meetings a month after the baby is born. Which could be any time from now.
The gang and I are sitting in my living room, waiting for Tobias, eating Dauntless cake and watching a film on TV. It's called Hairspray, it's really good. Uriah and Zeke keep dancing and singing as we watch. It's hilarious.
Tobias comes home at three and the others lead us upstairs, to the nursery. Uriah's hands over my eyes and Zeke's over Tobias'.
"Guys, I really don't think it's safe me climbing the stairs without being able to see. I am pregnant you know." I say.
"Don't worry. I won't let you fall Tris. I love my nephew too much." Uriah says.
"He's not your nephew Uriah, hate to break it to you." I hear Tobias laugh.
"Well, Tris, you're like a sister to me, so yeah, he is my nephew. AND I WILL BE THE BEST UNCLE EVER!" Uri yells.
"No bro, I am going to be the best uncle ever." Zeke counters.
"Shut up Ezekiel, you're ruining my moment. Also, I'm going to teach my nephew the word Pansycake and he can help me get everyone in Dauntless saying it again. As he is the child of the two Dauntless prodigies that shouldn't be a problem." Everyone laughs.
"Uriah, I swear to god that if my child, or other children, ever say the word Pansycake, I will kill you." I joke.
"No you won't." He returns.
Suddenly we stop and I hear someone opening the door before the Pedrad brothers lead us into the room and take their hands off our eyes.
WOW!
It's beautiful.
The walls are a light blue and there are stickers on it of trains and cars and dinosaurs and pirates and things. There is a black crib in the middle of the room. A black wardrobe against the left wall, along with a changing table, which is also black. Let's just say that all the furniture is black, well, except the armchair in the corner of the room. There is a bookshelf stacked with children's books. There is a box that looks like a treasure chest under the window that probably has toys in. There is a mobile with different types of fish on it hanging above the bed. There is a baby bouncer. A chest of drawers. A rocking chair. And other things.
"Guys, this is amazing. Thank you." I tell them, overcoming my speechlessness.
My mum envelopes me in a hug and it isn't long before everyone else joins.
"Guys I need to breathe, so does my baby."
They all laugh and let go of me.
"Seriously, though. This is amazing. Thanks for doing this for us." Tobias says.
We get a series of 'no problem's and 'it was our pleasure's.
It is then that a sharp pain rips through my stomach.
I place a hand on my stomach and gasp.
"What's wrong?" Tobias questions, worried.
They all look worried.
"I don't know." I answer, also worried.
"What happened Tris?" Hana asks.
"I just felt a pain in my stomach."
"How bad was it on a scale of one to ten?"
"I don't know. Four."
"What?" Tobias asks.
"I meant four as in on the scale of one to ten."
"I know." He smiles slightly, but I can still tell he is worried. His arm is around my waist and his hand is in mine, the one that isn't on my stomach.
"What did it feel like?" This time my mum speaks.
"I don't know. A tightening, maybe." Then I realise that there's a chance I'm in labour. "No. I'm not due for another six weeks. It's early. He can't be born now."
I'm panicking again.
"Tris, calm down. You might not be in labour but I'm going to check on you, just in case. Okay?" Hana says.
"Okay." I say, nodding.
"Let's get you in your room. Natalie, Tobias, you can come in with us, but the rest of you have to wait downstairs, okay." Hana instructs.
They all nod and Tobias, my mum and Hana lead me to our bedroom whilst everyone else goes downstairs, all looking scared.
Hana shuts the door to the bedroom as my mum and Tobias help me onto the bed. My mum making a mountain of pillows so I can lean against the headboard comfortably.
Tobias and my mum are on either side of me, holding my hands.
"Tris, I need to take off your panties okay." Hana says.
I am wearing a black maxi dress.
I just nod.
She takes them off and puts on some gloves before doing what she has to do.
When she's done she breathes a sigh of relief and takes off her gloves.
"You're not in labour. It was just a Braxton hicks contraction. They are contractions that prepare your body for the real thing. I suggest you rest, a lot, because this means you are close to going into labour. It could happen tomorrow or in a few weeks but get as much rest as you can. Make sure you have someone with you at all times. If the contractions get more painful, or get closer together, or both, then you have to call me immediately. That often means you are in labour. The infirmary are only letting me work on weekends because of my age, and because I did basically retire before we left for the Bureau, but I will still be there for you, okay. You can have a home birth if you want." Hana explains.
I nod, breathing a sigh of relief.
I'm not in labour.
Yet.
But I can't believe she is only working weekends because of her age. She isn't old. She's the same age as my mum. Thirty nine. Maybe forty. She isn't too old to work.
I yawn, not realising how tired I am.
"Get some sleep. You're going to need all the sleep you can get." Hana says.
I nod and Tobias helps me lay down, comfortably.
My eyes close as soon as my head hits the pillow.
Hey Ravens. Sorry for the wait. I have a 2000+ word essay to write for English and have had to focus on that.
I will update as soon as I can, but I have to tell you there are only going to be two or three more chapters of this story before the sequel.
