There are no mistakes. The events we bring upon ourselves, no matter how unpleasant, are necessary in order to learn what we need to learn; whatever steps we take, they're necessary to reach the places we've chosen to go.-Richard Bach
"So," Amber's mother began. "What are we doing today?" she asked as she poured a cup of coffee for Amber's father.
"Well, I wanted to get to know my little sister's boyfriend," Dean smirked.
Amber rolled her eyes at her brother. "Dean," Amber sighed. "Spencer is a good guy."
Dean rolled his eyes back at his sister. "I'm sure he is," Dean replied as his eyes narrowed at Spencer.
Spencer leaned into the table, "I am," Spencer retorted. "I'm better than most guys. Sure, I'm not perfect,or athletic, but I am smart. And I love your sister," Spencer paused, he looked over at Amber and smiled. His lips created a curve and his eyes lit up. Amber's hand was sitting on the table, he placed his hand on top of hers. He then looked Dean straight in the eyes. "so I don't really care if you approve of me or not." Just then, Spencer's phone beeped in his pocket. He took his hand off of Amber's, reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He looked at it and it was a text from Garcia.
From:Garcia
Time:8:30 am
Reid, I just thought I should let you know that Amber is texting Luke.
~Flashback~
The night before had the living room a mess, an empty pizza box sitting on the coffee table, and two empty glasses of wine sitting on top of the celebration of Amber's passing grades was not worth the empty bottle of wine . Spencer and Amber were asleep in their bed, just then Spencer's phone began to ring. Spencer moaned as he reached over to his side table to grab it. He opened his eyes and pressed talk.
"Hello?" he yawned.
"Spence, it's JJ. We have a case," She said on the other line.
Spencer's head was throbbing. "Okay, I'll be there." He moaned and hung up his phone. Spencer sat up, pushed the covers off of him and swung his legs over the bed. He set his phone back down on the side table and stood up. He quietly walked out of the bedroom in nothing but his boxers. He fumbled to the kitchen and grabbed a cup out of the cupboard. He walked over to the fridge, opened it and took out a pitcher of water. He poured the water into his glass. He set down the pitcher on the countertop, and took a long gulp. Moments later, he slammed the empty glass down on the counter next to the pitcher of water. His head was pounding a little less now, but it was still pounding. Spencer walked back into the bedroom and quietly got ready for work.
Spencer arrived at work about an hour later,he put his car in park, he cut the engine of his 67' volvo, took the keys out of the ignition, and unbuckled his seatbelt. He had on his black Ray Ban sunglasses, a dark grey cardigan, a button up shirt, a pair of black slacks and a pair of converse. He felt like hell and he tried to hide the fact that he had a hangover. He grabbed his leather messenger bag from the passenger side, he opened the door and climbed out of the car. Spencer shut the door once he was out and locked the car with his key. He put his messenger bag over his shoulder and started walking towards the door of the building.
"Where is Reid?" JJ asked Prentiss, who was sitting down at her desk, Morgan was standing next to Reid's desk, JJ was at her own desk with Prentiss and Garcia standing next to her. And as if on cue, Spencer walked through the doors of the bullpen.
Prentiss started to laugh, "Good morning sunshine,"
Reid walked over to everyone. "Morning," He mumbled as he walked over to his desk.
"You know you still have your sunglasses on kid," Morgan said as he sipped his coffee.
"I know," Spencer murmured as he pressed his first few fingers to his temple.
Morgan's eyes narrowed at the other agent. "Spencer, do you have a hangover?" He asked.
Spencer set his bag down at his desk. "Yes," he sighed.
Morgan pursed his lips together, trying not to laugh. "Is this your first one?" Morgan inquired. Spencer nodded. Morgan couldn't contain his laughter anymore and busted out laughing.
"Morgan, it's not funny," Spencer spat.
"How did it even happen? I've barely seen you drink,"
Spencer sighed, "Amber and I were celebrating her passing her classes…"
"Did Amber have a hangover too this morning?" JJ asked.
Spencer shook his head, "No, she wasn't up when I was but she only had two glasses…..I...I had the rest."
Morgan, JJ, Prentiss and Garcia all sat or stood there, their mouths hanging open in shock. "Reid!" Garcia finally gasped.
"Why Reid?" JJ questioned. Spencer pulled out his chair and sat down. The four of his team members were now gathered around him, waiting to hear the reason of his hangover.
Spencer signed again. "Last night, when I got home, a guy was in our apartment…"
"A guy!" JJ exclaimed.
"What," Prentiss gasped.
"Did you kick his ass?" Morgan asked.
"He was in our apartment delivering pizza," Spencer continued. "Amber knew him, his name is Luke."
"Do you….do you think…" Morgan began.
"No," Spencer said flatly. "she wouldn't."
Garcia started marched off in a hurry, "Reid." She called after him. Spencer sighed as he quickly followed her. Spencer walked down the hall, to her office or 'lair' as she liked to call it.
Garcia opened the door, walked in and sat down at her desk. Spencer shut the door and walked over to her.
"Garcia, please don't," Spencer begged, but he was already too late. Garcia was typing away at her keyboard, hungry to know more about this Luke.
"What's his last name?" Garcia demand.
"Uh….I think Amber told me his name was Westchester."
Garcia was typing away on her keyboard, a few clicks of her mouse and there he was. "Lucas Alexander Westchester, he's 21….oh," Garcia said as a number of articles popped up.
"What?" Spencer asked as he leaned over her shoulder to get a better look at the screen.
"Westchester….Thee Westchester's…." Garcia said as she looked up at Spencer, Spencer had a blank look on his face. Garcia sighed as she turned her attention back to her screen. "They own so many restaurants, hotels and shopping stores, around the world. They are swimming in cash, like almost Bill Gates status," Garcia paused to read more about them, "They own Turn the page,"
"Where Amber works." Spencer stated.
"Bingo," Garcia responded. "Do you think that she is using him or something?" Garcia asked. There was silence. "Reid," She said as she turned away from her computer to look back at Reid, but by then, he was already long gone.
~End of flashback ~
"Spence?" Amber asked. Spencer looked up from his phone.
"Yeah," He said as he watched Amber give him a strange look.
"Are you okay?"
Spencer nodded quickly as he stuffed his phone into his pocket. He shot up from his chair and leaned over to Amber. "Can I talk to you for a minute?" He whispered.
"Yeah," Amber answered slowly. Spencer walked out of the kitchen, Amber got up from her seat and followed him into the hall. They walked down the hall and back into Amber's room. Spencer walked in with Amber right behind him, Spencer shut the door, turned to Amber and crossed his arms over his chest.
Spencer pursed his lips together, unsure of how to tell her he had Garcia monitoring her texts. "Okay, well, I just want to say that this wasn't my idea," He began as he was starting to sweat.
"Okay," Amber replied.
Spencer took in a deep breath. "I know you have been texting Luke," he blurted out. Amber went to open her mouth to protest, her face was angry and looked like she was about to cry. Spencer put up a finger, "Let me finish," he begged. Amber crossed her arms over her chest as well, and huffed. "I was worried you were seeing him behind my back, ever since that night when he was at our apartment. Well okay I didn't think anything was going on, but Morgan was putting all of these thoughts into my head ,Garcia had told me that his family owns where you work and I just….I panicked," Spencer said, his words seemed to run into each other, from him talking so fast. " I know that you lied to me about texting Rossi, I know that you were actually texting him."
"I technically was texting Rossi as well," Amber stated.
Spencer unfolded his arms from his chest, walked over to the neatly made bed and sat down. "I…..I just don't understand why you lied? If you didn't have anything to hide, you would have told me."
Amber walked over to Spencer, she uncrossed her arms and sat down next to him. "I lied, because I was scared you would think I was seeing him. Because I'm not…" Amber said as she turned to Spencer.
Spencer was twiddling his thumbs nervously, "But he's better than me." He mumbled.
"What?!" Amber questioned in a loud tone. "Why would you say that?" Amber whispered as she caressed the side of his cheek with the back of her hand.
Spencer snorted, "He's got everything…looks, money…"
"Yeah," Amber began. "But he doesn't have me." Amber stopped caressing his cheek, she leaned over and kissed it. She then sat back down and grabbed his hand. He looked up at her, he looked like a sad puppy and it made her heartbreak. "Spence," she moaned. "don't look at me like that," Amber shifted her weight, to move so she could lay her leg on the bed and kept it bent facing her. She moved closer to him, her heart was pounding in her chest. She didn't want to lose him, he was the best thing that had ever happened to her. He looked back at her, he was looking right into her eyes. His brown eyes making her melt and lose focus.
"Look, I know we haven't been together very long, and that we haven't really fought. But if you should know anything about me, it's that I don't cheat. And I don't have a reason to Spence," She said with a smile. "I know I lied and I promise I won't again. You can be mad at me for as long as you want, I deserve it. But I care so much about you…." Amber broke off, tears were forming in her eyes, her throat was closing up and she began to sniffle. "I love you, I don't have a need for any other guy but you."
Spencer used his thumb to wipe away her tears, "I love you too," he said softly as he turned his body towards her. He could tell she was telling the truth, she was looking right into his eyes, and she wasn't constantly licking her lips (that was her tell when she was lying). He leaned into her and gave her a kiss on the lips. He could taste the salt from her tears, but he didn't care. Their lips pulled apart and they smiled at one another. Amber sniffled one last time as she wiped her tears away completely. "I...I wish I could show you." Spencer said.
"Show me what?" Amber asked as she stood up on her leg, that was on the floor for a moment to fix her placement on the bed.
"How much I love you," Spencer said breathlessly.
Amber's face was now a bright red. "Oh, Spence, I know how much you love me."
"No, you don't, you…you have no idea how you make me feel,"
Amber shook her head, " Spence, I can't have as much of an effect on you than you do on me,"
"I keep a photo of you in my wallet," Spencer began, this got Amber's attention, causing her to look up at him. "I have one of you on my desk at work as well, I send my mom letters everyday, telling her how amazing you are, I can't wait to finish a case so I can get home to you faster. I love having my team members at work asking about you, I love reading to you before bed. I secretly read some of your notebooks when you aren't home, just so I can hear your voice in my head. I love it when you wear my button up shirts because then when I go to wear it I can still smell your perfume. I think everyday about how I can make you happy…"
"You do make me happy Spence," Amber cut in. "I am so grateful for you. I know how much you love me. Telling me everything that you told me last night, you poured your heart out to me. It meant so much to me, and I know it was all hard to talk about. We don't need to…to have sex for you to show me."
"I just feel like if I don't you'll leave me for that primed up, preppy ass….."
"Spence!" Amber laughed.
Spencer laughed along with her then said, "I...I can't lose you,Amber."
"I can't lose you either." she admitted.
Just then there was a knock on the door, "Kids? Are you alright?" Amber's mother asked from the other side of the door.
"Yeah mom, we are just talking." Amber said. But the doorknob turned anyways and her mother opened the door, peeking her head in. She saw the two of them sitting down on the bed, facing each other, and holding hands.
"What are you two talking about?" she asked.
"Just stuff mom. We will be done in a few, okay?"
Her mother nodded slowly as she started to back her head out of the room and said, "Alright, just don't take too long." she told them as she shut the door.
Amber rolled her eyes, "Sorry about that," Amber said to Spencer.
"It's alright," Spencer said as he watched Amber.
"I'm sorry," Amber blurted out. "I'm sorry I lied, I shouldn't have." She kept shaking her head, she was disgusted in her self.
Spencer pursed his lips together, he really did love Amber, and didn't want to break up with her just because of one small thing. "I forgive you, but next time, just tell me the truth."
Amber's face lit up, "I will,I promise." she said as she put her hands on his face and planted a big kiss on his lips. They pulled apart and Amber said, "Just promise me to tell me if you think something is wrong, or if you think I'm doing something wrong. I know Garcia was protecting you, but if you would have told me that you thought something was up with Luke and I. I would have told you the truth."
"And we wouldn't have your mom checking in on us,"
"Yes," Amber laughed.
"I promise, next time I'll come to you." Spencer agreed.
Amber gave him another kiss on the lips, once they finished the kiss, Amber stood up and started to walk towards the door. "We better get back out there," She said.
"Yes, right," he said as he stood up and walked over to her. She opened the door and the two of them walked out into the hallway. Her family was standing at the end of the hallway, waiting to leave.
"Sorry for keeping you guys waiting, we uh...had to have a little talk." Amber said as she glanced over at Spencer.
"As long as you two weren't having…sex." Amber's father said with a disgusted look on his face. Her father, mother and brother all started to walk towards the front door.
Amber looked up at Spencer and said, "We should have went back today."
Spencer chuckled, "That would have been a good idea."
Amber sighed as she followed her family out the front door, with Spencer right by her side. The five of them piled into Amber's dad's suv. Dean insisted on sitting in between Amber and Spencer in the car.
The car ride was about ten minutes, but it felt like a lifetime. Once they pulled up into Dean's house, the car stopped, Ed put the car in park and cut the engine. Spencer looked out the car window and could see one little boy running towards the car, the other was standing next to a woman that was standing in the doorway to the front five of them emerged from the car, car doors slamming at different times, and they walked over to the woman. The little boy ran over to Amber, Amber was crouched down, waiting for him to run over to her.
"Drake!" She said as the little boy ran into her, almost making her fall over. Amber wrapped her arms around him. "I missed my little nephew."
"I mwissed you too," the little boy said.
Amber let her nephew go and stood up. Drake was looking up at Spencer. "Drake, this is Spencer,"
Spencer kneeled down to Drake. "Hi Drake, I'm Spencer Reid."
"Hi, are you the cop my auntie is dating?" he asked.
Spencer softly chuckled then said, "Yes, but I'm better than a cop. I'm an F.B.I agent,"
"That's so cool," Drake replied in awe.
"Yeah, I guess it is," Spencer replied as he stood up. The three of them walked into the house, and the rest of Amber's family had already gone inside.
