I want to be very close to someone I respect and admire and have somebody who feels the same way about me.-Richard Bach
As the three of them;Spencer, Drake and Amber walked into Dean's house, Spencer pulled Amber aside as Drake went into the kitchen.
"What?" Amber asked with wide eyes, a little unaware of what his intentions were.
"Do you want kids?" Spencer asked nervously.
Amber turned to face the hallway, at the end of the hallway was the kitchen. She watched as her nephews were running around, playing tag and enjoying their company. Amber sighed then admitted, "Yeah, eventually."
Spencer smirked at her as they were interrupted by the pitter patter of little feet. "Auntie Amber!" Drake said as he ran over to her.
"Hey buddy!" she said as kneeled down.
"Come play," he said as he tugged on her arm.
"Okay, okay," Amber giggled as she stood up, shuffled into the kitchen with Drake and into the living room that was joined with the kitchen. Spencer followed the two of them, he passed Amber's family. All of them giving him a cold stare, all but Amber's mother. Spencer gave them a close mouth smile as he awkwardly made his way into the living room.
He sat down on the couch, Amber was sitting down on the floor with Drake, playing with action figures. Spencer watched as the two of them played, Amber was great with kids. All of a sudden,Spencer's phone started to ring in his pocket. Spencer reached into his pocket and quickly pulled out his phone. He looked at the caller ID and it was Garcia. He quickly stood up, walked out of the room, walked through the kitchen and into the hall.
He answered the call and put the phone to his ear. "Hello?" Spencer spat in a grumpy tone.
"Well, hello Dr. Grumpy," Garcia quipped on the other end if the line.
Spencer sighed, "I'm sorry, Amber's family is giving me a hard time."
"Its alright, anyways, we have a case. I know that you aren't suppose to be back until tomorrow but..."
"We will hop on the next plane out of here." Spencer said without a thought.
"Well, actually, its in Texas. Which is extremely odd since you were just there.."
"That is, where is the case at?" Spencer asked.
He could hear Garcia typing away at her keyboard. "Houston." She replied.
"Thats only a two hour and thirty three minute drive, " Spencer told Garcia. " we will meet the team there."
" Alright," Garcia confirmed.
Spencer ended the call, stuffed his phone back into his pocket and walked back to the living room. He walked over to Amber, she looked up at him, she had been waiting for him to return. "Whats up?" She asked as she stood up from the floor.
"There is a case in team is headed there soon, I told them we could meet them down there."
"We?"
Spencer tucked his hair behind his ear and cleared his throat. "You and I."
Amber looked over at her family, they were all standing there, watching and listening to the conversation. But Amber cleared her throat and the four of them looked around as though they had been the whole time. Amber walked over to Spencer. "I don't mind leaving early," Amber whispered. "but who knows how long the case may take," she continued. "I have to be back to D.C for work."
Spencer smirked. "Ask Luke to do you a favor," Spencer said slyly.
Amber pursed her lips,"I don't know Spence, he might get the wrong impression."
" A friend can't do another friend a favor anymore?" Spencer asked.
Amber sighed. It felt odd to ask Luke for a favor after neglecting their friendship for so many months. She doubt he would let her take off as many days as she needed, to stay in Texas with her boyfriend while he does a case. "Alright," she finally said as she walked over to the wooden coffee table and picked up her phone. She scrolled through her contacts and landed on Luke's number. She hit send and put the phone up to her ear. The other end kept ringing and ringing, when finally the sound of someone picking up was heard on the other end.
"Hey Amber," Luke said, his voice was soft and sweet.
"Hi," She replied.
"What's up?" he asked.
"This is kind of...out of the blue. But...umm... I'm in Texas visiting family...you know that. But something came up and I'm going to have to stay. I have a shift tomorrow and..."
"Say no more, I'll take care of it." Luke cut in.
"Are you sure?" Amber asked.
"Absolutely, it's no trouble at all." He insisted.
"Great, thanks. I really appreciate it." Amber said, her tone was innocent.
"Just one thing," Luke continued.
Amber was quiet for a moment. "Ok...what?" She asked.
"We have to go out for coffee when you get back."
Amber glanced over at Spencer and she pursed her lips together. Its just one coffee...its not hurting anyone...if it means I get a few more days off... "Okay," she said aloud.
"Great!" Luke enthusiastically said from the other end of the phone and hung up.
Amber instantly regretted her answer as she put the phone down from her ear.
"Well?" Spencer asked impatiently.
"He said it was fine, and that he had it under control." Amber answered.
Amber's family was now in the living room, they were trying not to listen, but it was hard not to. "You're leaving early?" Amber's mother asked.
Spencer turned to look behind him,and saw her family standing there. Amber walked over to them. "I have to. I can just go back with Spence and his team. We where going to just use one of the cars that the bureau can use."
"But you will be just sitting in the hotel room the whole timeā¦" Her mother said as she leaned against the frame of the doorway.
"Or I could shop," Amber said with a smirk.
Amber's mother sighed, "Alright, you deserve a few days off with your boyfriend by yourself."
"Or she could stay here with her family," Dean mumbled under his breath.
"Dean," their mother hissed as she lightly hit his upper arm with the back of her hand.
"Well, she could!" He argued.
"She doesn't have to, it's her time off." Kim retorted.
Dean turned to Amber and said, "We haven't seen you in a few years Amber, you could spend more time with us, more than three days."
Amber gave her brother a cold stare. "Excuse me for wanting to spend sometime with Spence," she responded. "I never get to spend anytime with him."
"You live with him," her father interjected. "you see him all the time." Jen, her sister-in-law,brushed past Dean and walked over to Drake. She kneeled down and scooped him up in her arms and she quickly exited the room. She probably didn't want Drake or Ben to hear their family fighting.
Amber stepped closer to her family, "I see him, at most, a total of six hours a week. Maybe ten if I'm lucky. So, don't give me that crap." Amber spat. As for Spencer, he was awkwardly standing there, he didn't want to make matters worse. It was already hard to impress her family, if he got in on their fight, her family
"Fine," her father asserted. "If you want to go off with your boyfriend, go. But if he breaks up with you, don't come crying to us." He bellowed, while wagging his index finger at her.
Spencer's phone rang in his hand and quickly answered it. "Hey," He said to the person on the other line. He listened for a moment and then replied, "alright, thanks," He ended the call, stuffed his phone in his pocket and walked over to Amber. "They just dropped off a car." Spencer whispered to Amber.
"Good," she remarked. "we can leave," Amber walked to the doorway, where her family was still blocking. "excuse me." she said and they backed out of the doorway, Amber brushed past them, with Spencer not far behind her. Amber walked into the hallway, to the door and opened it. "Bye!" She angrily yelled as Spencer darted out the doorway. Amber slammed the door behind her and walked to the car. "I hate them," she murmured as she walked over to the passenger door and Spencer walked over to the driver's both climbed into the big SUV and shut their doors. Amber buckled her seat belt and sighed. Spencer snatched the key off the dashboard, put the key in the ignition and started the engine.
"Don't say that," Spencer said as he buckled his seatbelt. He put the car in reverse and backed out of the driveway. He put the car in drive and they took off.
About ten minutes later, Spencer pulled into the driveway of Amber's parent's house. The two of them got out of the car and shut the doors. They made their way up the driveway to the front door. "They just annoy me. I know they mean well, but.." Amber trailed off as she took the step to the porch, she kneeled down and lifted up the doormat. The house key was placed under it, Amber snatched it up and stood up. She put the key in the lock, turned it and the door opened. and stepped inside. The two of them swiftly walked to their rooms, packed anything that wasn't already in their bags and looked around to make sure they had everything. They met back in the hallway, their bags slung over their shoulders. They walked back to the front door and Spencer shut it behind him. Amber quickly locked the door and put the key back under the mat.
The two of them headed back to the car, they both opened the back doors, threw their bags in the back seats and slammed the doors. The both of them climbed into the huge black SUV, Spencer put the key in the ignition, started the engine and he put the car in reverse. He backed out of the driveway, put the car in drive and a cloud of exhaust followed behind the car.
"...I just wish my family knew how absolutely amazing you are," Amber continued as she finished her thought from earlier.
Spencer continued to drive, his face turning a light pink. "I wish they knew how absolutely amazing their daughter is," Spencer confessed with a smirk.
Amber sat there, her mouth unable to move, she couldn't say what she was thinking. Why? Spencer, why? She thought, her eyes shut tight, as her head faced the window. Why do you think I'm so great? My own family doesn't think I'm anything special, so why do you?
They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had. And add some extra, just for you.-Philip Larkin
