A/N: Sorry to those of you who've already tried to read this chapter and couldn't due to it being written in HTML! I'm not sure what happened there, and I usually check to make sure it was uploaded properly, but alas, this time I did not. Anywho, I hope you all enjoy!
She spent the weekend alone. She didn't go anywhere or do anything-she just sat around and reflected on all that had transpired over the past months. She still hadn't heard a word from the creative team or management. She wasn't sure if this was a good thing or a bad thing. Punk hadn't bothered to call either. He'd left her Thursday evening with a half-hearted kiss goodbye and a 'see you next week'. He seemed more than happy these days to go on the road, and now she suspected she knew why.
She couldn't stop herself from speculating over the affair she now suspected her fiance was carrying on behind her back. Of course, she had no proof of this. For all she knew, Punk was being completely honest with her. Still, something seemed off about him; he had changed so much in such a short time. She knew he had a right to be angry with her-but was it right to go behind her back and see someone else? She didn't think so. Even so, the pain of this betrayal was dulled by the fact that Dean was gone and it was largely her own fault.
From time to time she found herself wondering about him. Several times she had to stop herself from trying to call him. How pathetic. She was once sure she hated this guy and now she'd let herself become enamored with him. He'd said very early on that they shared a connection. At the time she thought it was crazy talk, but now she knew it to be true. Why else would she hurt so much from his absence? The thing that hurt the most was not knowing when-or if-she'd see him again. Dean may be gone for good, and the thought of this left her feeling sick.
The fact that she'd finally admitted to herself that she had feelings for Dean only made her feel worse. She felt ultimately that this was a betrayal to Punk who was supposed to be the sole recipient of her affection-and that she harbored these feelings for Dean perpetuated Punk to drift further away. Now she was torn between two men, and the irony was incredible. On one hand she had Punk who, despite insisting he loved her very much, was becoming more distant every day. On the other hand there was Dean, who couldn't just come to her and admit his feelings but had instead ejected himself from her life. She loved both men but neither were available.
The weekend was over and after three torturous days alone, she returned to work on Tuesday. She was disappointed to find that the creative team had written a script for her to deliver to the audience concerning the absence of Dean Ambrose. She read over it quickly and looked at the writers doubtfully.
"I know you may be uncomfortable with this but we have to button this thing up. This is the best we've got."
Matt Striker was set to conduct an interview at the beginning of the show where basically she would apologize for her rookie's walkout and explain that he would not be returning to the competition due to forfeit.
She stared at the script, reading the empty words over and over and wondering how she would manage when the real interview started.
"Aidan?"
The tentative voice caught her off guard. She looked up to see Derrick Bateman standing before her.
"Sorry to interrupt-I-I wanted to talk to you...if you have timeā¦"
His reluctance baffled her.
"Sure. What's up?"
"It's about...AJ. Do you mind if we go somewhere more private?"
Her interest piqued, she followed him down the hall to an out of the way area backstage. He looked around nervously as if he were checking to see if they were followed.
"Derrick, what's this about?"
"You'll have to forgive me. It's not easy for me to admit."
He hesitated a moment and took a deep breath.
"I know some things about AJ that I thought you'd like to know."
She was starting to lose patience.
"Like what?"
"Well...I have reason to believe she may be having an affair with your fiance."
Her stomach turned and her pulse quickened.
"And why do you suspect that?"
"Because she was supposed to be my girlfriend. It wasn't until very recently I found out that she'd been using me all along-and she was using me to get information about you."
"-What do you mean?"
He let out a long sigh, running his fingers through his curly black hair.
"I don't know what lead her to pursuing me in the first place. Maybe it was because you were close to Daniel and I was his rookie? It didn't matter to me back then-I was just happy she was with me. At first, everything was great between us-she seemed to really care about me. Then things changed little by little. It wasn't long before she became very interested in you. She would casually ask questions. Eventually she started asking about Dean. She seemed suspicious that you may be romantically involved with him. I asked her why it mattered to her and she was dismissive. Then it happened. I saw you kiss Dean that night at the arena."
She stared at him in disbelief until he continued on.
"I didn't want to say anything-I swear! But she could tell I knew something and she kept pressuring me until I told her. Things became strange between us after that. She didn't call or come around much anymore. The last night I was with her was the night of Punk's birthday party. She dumped me that night with no explanation-it was just over. You might imagine, I was a little heart broken. After she left me, I followed her at a distance, just to see where she was going. I was shocked to find that she was meeting up with Punk. They went somewhere they thought no one was watching and proceeded to have a makeout session."
She felt like she'd been punched square in the gut. Even though she had already suspected her fiance was having an affair, she couldn't believe that it was really true.
"-I didn't want to be the bearer of bad news-I just thought you should know."
"No...no, I'm glad you told me."
She tried to take deep breaths but it was becoming hard to breathe.
"Are you ok?" Derrick asked, looking concerned.
"Yes. Thank you. We'll talk more later, okay?"
She walked swiftly away, barely aware of where she was going. At some point, she passed by Daniel who she thought asked, 'Are you ok?' but she couldn't hear anything over the sound of her own heartbeat. She broke into a sprint, running out of the exit door, outside into the cold winter air. The cool air helped calm her as she gasped to regain her breath.
Daniel had caught up to her.
"Aidan, what's wrong?"
She shook her head, trying to suppress the tears.
"Fucking hypocrite...I'm so stupid!"
"What happened?" he asked.
"I just found out my fiance has been cheating on me, and it's probably been happening for a long time."
