The Third and Fourth Winners

A large man read the front of his newspaper, then shook his head in disgust. This whole contest thing was stupid anyway. Toffee walked by just as he chucked his paper in the trash.

She grabbed the newspaper, and examined the headline; THIRD AND FOURTH TICKETS FOUND BY VIOLET BEAUREGARD AND MIKE TEAVEE.

She ran home, stumbling slightly through the snow, and burst into the house.

"Someone's found the third and fourth tickets!" she said, slightly out of breath. She laid the newspaper out on the bed, and switched on the television, where they were televising the interview of Violet Beauregard.

Violet and her mother were wearing matching pink track suits, and standing in front of endless shelves of trophies. Her mother was beaming at the camera, and Violet was holding her ticket close to her face, and noshing on an enormous piece of gum.

Her mother continued to brag to the camera about the rows of trophies, and how when she heard about 'these ticket things', 'her Violet' just had to 'win' one.

Mrs. Bucket said, "What a beastly woman!"

Grandma Georgina said, "Despicable!"

Grandpa George heard this, and said to his wife, "You don't know what you're talking about?"

Grandma Georgina smiled her toothy smile, and said, "Dragonflies."

Charlie didn't say anything, as he was too busy watching Violet talk to the reporters.

Toffee sat a little straighter as the reporter changed the story to Mike Teavee.

Toffee thought to herself, "The parents must not be that bad. They must have some sense of humor to name their child like that!"

Mike was sitting on the floor, hunched over a game controller, staring intently at the screen, yelling, "DIE! DIE! DIE!"

When the poor camera man asked him how he found a ticket, Mike snapped something about hacking the system to find one.

Mike's parents were standing as far away from the speakers as possible, wincing at the deafening noise coming from the game consol.

Toffee shook her head.

The reporter said, "And now, the question is: Who will be the winner of the last gol-" but Charlie reached over, and switched off the television.

Toffee ducked her head, realizing that her chances of seeing Mr. Wonka again were all but gone.

Charlie looked sympathetically at his older sister, although he had no idea what was bothering her, then asked Grandpa Joe, "Can you tell us the story of Prince Pondicherry?"
