Chapter 26: May – Together

I couldn't believe sometimes how happy I was. A teenager in love. This must be what Edward and Bella felt. I only got a glimpse when I touched Edward the first time, but it was enough for me to realise I had similar feelings for Seth. Our talk in the cave was good and our second kiss blissful. After that it all felt so natural. Though my brain still warned me to be careful.
It was strange how easily we forgot about being very different species. The way our bodies reacted to each other had a lot to do with that. One word: Exhilaration. I can't describe it any other way. When he touches me, his lips on mine, it's such a rush. If anyone asks; yes, vampires can get high, 'stoned', drunk on love. Everything else becomes unimportant when we're close.
We figured out a lot of things for ourselves. Hiding our blossoming relationship got harder and harder. Before I got home I always made sure Seth's scent wasn't the only one on me. Or I changed clothes. My emotions were not that simple to conceal. Especially if he was near enough for me to smell him. Jasper started to give me odd looks. Quickly I than focused on others to distract me. –Sigh-. How would my family react if they found out?
It was bound to happen sometime. And I surely didn't want to hide it forever. During the rare moments I spent by myself I thought about them and the future. I knew one point everyone would have against us, together; imprinting. What would we do if it happened to Seth? That question stung me a second. -Big sigh-. I wished that if it should happen, let it be soon, while 'us' was still so new.
Leah finding Jacy (or Jace) made it even more real to me. Of course I was pleased for her, how could I not be. The amount of happiness she radiated stunned a lot of people. They've never seen her smile so much. And he was a great guy, just what she needed, a perfect fit. He accepted her wolf-side quick and was so intrigued. Her memories of him petting her flowed out through the pack-mind. She couldn't help it and shared a lot. Effectively that helped me and Seth to stay off the radar.
One person knew of course. But Embry never slipped up, though he voiced some concern when the others weren't around. We let him know we were aware of them and taking things slow. 'And yes, we're being careful,' I thought to him. A passionate kiss flashed by in my mind. 'Hmhm,' he uttered in response, I see.' Lee, Quil and Jake just phased back. Seth bumped his 'brother', because scowling was hard as a wolf.
Late October he got busted, so to speak, his family figured it out. Leah was not so understanding. She didn't say a word, but couldn't hide her feelings. Avoiding me for a while was also a clue. Still the Halloween party had been great, we enjoyed ourselves immensely. My boyfriend looked handsome as an elf, he wore the ears well. I know he'd get some comments afterwards though.
But us matching might haven given away too much about us being closer. A few days later dad asked me for a moment to talk. Just the two of us. I was pretty sure however that he already heard things from Jasper and Edward. Their gifts were such a drag, so annoying! Especially now. And Alice, what did she know? Ugh!
We went to his study and sat in the chairs across from each other, without the desk in between. "You probably know what this is about," he started. "Yes, I replied, you have concerns about our relationship." He took a deep breath, the look in his eyes soft. "Just the ones you expect, he said, but I'm also curious." I arched an eyebrow. A small smile graced his face in response.
"Well, he explained, this is a new situation, something we never thought would happen, a vampire and spirit-wolf falling for each other." Edward and Bella together was already special, but you and Seth…." Hmm, this was not what I anticipated, the scientist coming out. I gave him half a smile. "Well, I'm not sure how to explain it myself, I'll try though."
We spoke about things for an hour. Jake loving Bella and ultimately imprinting on Renesmee came up. Dad suggested something like that might happen. I wasn't sure how to feel about me just being a link to Seth's true destiny. Someone I knew would be his soulmate? No, not a pleasant thought. Would I be jealous? Could I let him go? I had no answers right now.
"We will always be here, dad said, if you need advice or to just let it out." I hugged him. "I know, I replied, and I'm happy about that." I love you." He kissed the top of my head. "I love you too my daughter." I left the house afterwards to find Edward. I needed to know his point of view. He'd better not judge me, or Seth.
I followed his scent the meadow, it was mixed with Bella's. A mile before I reached it I slowed down, not wanting to intrude on personal time. (heard kissing) Waiting a minute he eventually came to me. A grin couldn't be helped; he looked a mess. His hair stood in all directions and his clothes were wrinkled. I liked this, he was usually so neat, immaculate.
My brother rolled his eyes at my thoughts. "You know why I'm here," I stated. He nodded and voiced his doubts about me and my wolf. I wanted to protest, but he added quickly that he knew I would be careful and that Seth was tougher than Bella as a human. A stern look from me shut him up.
"How long have you known, I asked, and are you going to intervene?" He sighed. "I wasn't sure until the Halloween party, he answered, and no, I'm not going to intervene." But, he put his finger up, that doesn't mean I want to see every interaction between you two." Now I rolled my eyes. "I'll try to subdue them, I said a little smug, but I'm not promising anything." I guess it's just another reason for you not to spy on me."
He opened his mouth to react, but decided not to. Bella appeared behind him, her hair and outfit were in a similar state as Edward's. The glow on her face though made her beautiful, only to be enhanced by a bright smile. She wrapped an arm around his waist. "Well, I want you to know, you two have my support." As long as you're happy," she added. I responded with a 'thanks'.
The next couple of weeks something seemed to be going on with Leah and Sue. My wolf sister didn't phase with me or Seth. And her mother kept calling her son. Ten days or so later he came to find me, his body showing irritation. I opened my arms for him and he clung to me for comfort. -"What's the matter?"- He explained that his family tried to find his imprint for him, by lining up girls of all ages.
I nuzzled his neck and told him they meant well. My man leaned back and gave me a questioning look. The thoughts passing through his head were many and I had a guess what they might be. Still I understood those two women. Imprinting would always be a thing to consider. Seth however seemed to feel it wouldn't happen to him and I really hoped he was right.
Still I urged him to just let them try and to go with the flow. He reluctantly gave in and really made an effort. Late November he'd seen enough girls for me and him to be satisfied. We felt we could relax and celebrated with some cliff-diving. Maybe I shouldn't have worn a bikini, because the way he looked at me….
And then we were making out, a lot of skin touching. His hands found their way to my breasts and butt. Mine went low too. A good thing the freezing water kept it from getting too heated. We sighed as he took in some much needed air. I couldn't wait for me to be a 100% toxic-free and completely safe to do what we wanted. What to do until then? Hmm…
Well, we did think of something. I copied phasing from Seth now. Honestly it was a real perk for me, ogling his muscled backside from the ground. Another thing, we found a regular wolf-pack up north. The small group of five was newly formed and as I spend time with them I learned a lot. Without a body I could get really close. More so than with my Russian family, I thought of them more.
All of them quickly gained the nickname 'Tiny Pack'. The alpha couple I named after my parents; Mogo and Uma. The two beta's became Max and Arnold, after some human friends. Last was a female, the omega, she was just lovely, her coat a soft brown colour. I thought of Native American name I read; Leotie. It fitted her so well, because it means 'flower of the prairie'.
I'm not sure why, but the more time I spent with them, and Seth, the more the bond with the latter grew. Slowly my doubts about our relationship started to fade to the back of my mind. He felt it too and was very happy. Could life become any better? To me it was pretty complete.
The rest of the 'Cullen-family' got used to us too. Emmet loved to tease us and make suggestive remarks. We ignored him. Rose wasn't so sure, but kept her opinion to herself. Jasper was a bit overwhelmed by all the positive, love-y-dove-y feelings around the house. All the pares were in a good mood.
That's why it surprised me to hear growling in the woods as I went to meet Seth. Moving faster and jumping up in the trees I saw Matt and Zack fighting in their wolf-form. "What's going on, I asked, raising my voice, why are you fighting?" I wanted to stop them and made a bad decision. Zack noticed me too late and his teeth pierced my right shoulder for a second.
It made me flinch, but he released me quick enough so there was no serious damage. Things went so fast and next I was aware of him being there. His aggression shocked me, I've never seen him like that. He pounced on Zack and glared at Matt. I noticed how much bigger he was now compared to them. They surrendered quickly. Seth needed to calm down, so I touched him.
"Seth, stop!" "It was an accident, I stated, and my own mistake." Calm down, we all need to talk." He let Zack go. I stepped closer, put my hand on his muzzle and looked him in the eye. Why did he react so strongly? He checked my injured shoulder. "I'm going to be fine, I scolded him, no need to overreact." He huffed and licked my healing 'wound'. That tickled so I couldn't help a giggle escaping.
I got back to business immediately however and asked Lucas to get some shorts for these ('overheated') guys. Then I asked the two combatants why they were fighting over a girl. Yeah, I just caught that. Couldn't they talk to her and let her decide over whatever it was? They hung their heads and seemed embarrassed. Adam seemed to know, he had a gleam in his eyes. "This should be good," he said, rubbing his hands, waiting for when they could speak.
When they were all phased back and covered properly, I asked again. They remained silent and were blushing now. I tapped my foot; "Come on, out with it, who is she?!" Still nothing but a shy glance my way. Lucas and Adam chuckled. Minutes ticked by. Oliver suddenly had enough, he stepped forward. "They both wanted to ask the same girl to our winter-dance in two weeks," he explained. "She's not a Quileute and older."
He paused and looked at me intently. I was puzzled, so I motioned him to go on. Seth intervened then; "Shouldn't someone do something else first?" With a low growl he stared down Zack. He glanced at me from behind his eyelashes. "I'm sorry, he said softly, I apologise for biting you, I really didn't mean for that to happen." I sighed: "I know, you're forgiven." I poked my boyfriend to get him to stop the macho behaviour. He relaxed a bit.
"Go on Oliver, I said, or maybe one of you two?" I looked at both fighters. The first one picked up. "You know her very well…, he hinted. My eyebrows shot up. What?! Was he talking about me? No, really?! Both boys were standing next to each other, still studying the ground. I moved towards them and lifted their chins. Matt swallowed a lump in his throat. Zack's heart-rate went up. Seth became a little rigid behind me.
"You were going to ask me to this dance?" I asked gently. They both gave me a very small nod, while blushing again. "Why?" was my next question. Again the silence. Adam broke it now. "They've developed a bit of a crush on you, he stated, ever since the Halloween party." He grinned and laughed briefly. "We told them it was silly, he added, but they didn't listen." Even when Collin hinted that you were already seeing someone."
Huh?! Collin knew about us? Wow! I turned my head to look at Seth. He was just as surprised as I was and shrugged. My attention went back to the boys, my little wolf-brothers, in front of me. "Well, I said, you see, Collin was right and now you now know who my boyfriend is." Also, wouldn't it be weird to show up at your dance with a vampire?" Are outsiders even aloud there?" I wondered about that while I let go of them.
Matt gained some confidence. "But it doesn't matter to us that you're a vampire," he whispered. "We don't think about it most of the time." Zack managed to talk too. "And I think you're beautiful, he said, and I would love to dance with you all night." I sighed, they were so sweet. "If you were scared to ask me, I told them gently, you could've asked others, like Jake or Leah, if I would say 'yes'." With a stern look I added; "This certainly wasn't worth fighting over."
"Yes, you're right, they both mumbled, I'm sorry dude." Saying it at the same time made them look at each other and chuckle. The tension was gone. "I'll always see you lot as little brothers, I said, so go and find a more suitable date." They nodded, but dared to peck a quick kiss on my cheeks before they left. I giggled and yelled at them; 'cheeky bastards'.
Me and Seth were left, I spun around to face him. He looked so serious, wrapping me up in his arms. Leaning down, he captured my lips and kissed me. It was intense, his tongue passed over my lower lip. He tasted so good. When we finished I asked him a burning question; "What was that all about, you going all wolf-aggressive?" He sighed and smiled. "I don't know, he replied, I just feel more protective over you." Someone hurting you makes me angry." His eyes pleaded with me to forgive him.
"I understand, I said gently, but you know I can take care of myself." He nodded and pulled me closer. "And Zack is not an enemy." He gazed into my eyes. "I know, Seth whispered, but I've been thinking of your empty body when you go flying." It's very vulnerable when your spirit travels too far." His worry showed on his face, a wrinkle appeared between his eyebrows.
Hmm, I never thought about that. He was right though, Quileute legends proved it. "You're right, I told him, we have to be more careful." Maybe find a good hiding place." "Yes, he added, or have someone stand guard." Something to work on in the near future. I pushed off his chest to move. We planned to check on Tiny Pack.
He stopped me however and I looked up at him. "Did you mean what you said about the dance?" he asked suddenly. "Huh?" I questioned. "You said that you thought you wouldn't be welcome there," he explained. I gave it a second and then nodded. "Well, he said, I think there are no rules about dates, but I could make inquiries." There was a pause. "If they say you could come, he asked next, would you go with me?"
My eyes widened and my mouth popped open a little. I didn't know how to respond. I've never been asked to a dance or any school event for that matter. He grinned at my expression and brushed my cheek with the back of his hand. "Yes, I breathed eventually, though I have no idea what I'm supposed to do." Seth let out a laugh and spun me around in a circle.
"Yay!" he shouted, I have a date with my girlfriend!" I giggled. "And if you can't go, I'm not going either," he stated. "I love you!" came out. "I love you too!" I shouted back. We laughed and crashed our lips together. Who imagined a fight leading to this? The days remaining were gone too fast. Because of course I got to go. A big thing, we would show everybody we're together now, an official couple. But I guess the ones that mattered knew already.
Alice was ecstatic, she'd get me in a dress again. Bella was there too however, to tone her down some. I grinned at our fashionista's pout. We also decided on brown contacts, my eye colour was too close to yellow and we would be around a lot of 'outsiders'. Seth had blinked when he saw them, it took a bit of getting used to.
I would've liked blue or green eyes too, nice and vibrant colours, but those seemed less natural for me. I'd think that over for another time. At the dance we turned some heads coming in and if I was human, I would've blushed. The whole atmosphere made me feel that a few more times during the evening. Like I had a heartbeat. We moved around so in sync and it was wonderful.
Near the end Collin and a girl came over to us. She smiled at Seth and then at me, before reaching out to shake hands. "Hay, she said, I'm Lily and it's nice to meet the girl who stole this guy's heart." She marked Seth and I instantly knew who she was. Wow, he was right, this girl was one of a kind. Her eyes showed her loving and caring nature. She was pure, like fresh snow. I could see why my man liked her.
"Nice to meet you, I replied, I'm Timmain, but everyone calls me May." She nodded. "So, Seth spoke up, you're here with Collin." He smiled at his wolf-brother. "Yeah, Lily responded, I asked him out." She looked at her date, who gave her a shy smile in return. "I was surprised, he commented, but couldn't resist." And we seemed to have a lot in common." We chatted a while about small things. When they ate and drank, I sipped some water. It's the easiest to hold down. The taste wasn't that bad either. At eleven o clock the floor emptied slowly. We said our goodbyes and strolled along the beach. It was a starry night, so we stayed to watch for a while, arms wrapped around each other, heads touching.
