Chapter 35: 3rd person – Hairy creatures

.

As the car disappeared in the distance, Tanya thought back to all that happened this past week. And Irina came back to the forefront of her mind. Her dead sister was the one who discovered that Sasha had created Vasilii, people talked. Non of the sisters actually saw the boy until the day the Volturi came. It was two days before he would be thrown into a fire.

Putting some facts together, like the many recent deaths, they knew something needed to be done. All three sisters tried to reason with their mother, warning her of the danger. They attempted several times, came up with different methods of persuasion, nothing worked. Not even sympathising. Because they didn't really love the child, but they could see that Sasha did, so much, it was palpable. Right up until the end she fought for him.

These thoughts made Tanya feel determined to fight for her family, for freedom, for happiness. She longed for some strong arms and went to stand by Nick's side.

Jasper had felt uncomfortable getting into an enclosed space with an animal he wanted to feed off of. He had left the car door open a moment, until May touched his hand. She had sent him a feeling of calm and acceptance. He had sighed in relief, closing the door and driving off. After a few miles he glanced back to the wolf, who'd fallen to sleep. This was such a strange situation, two vampires and a wild animal, together in a car.

He turned his head back and met May's eyes. She gave him a warm smile and more content and loving feelings through a simple touch. He didn't fully understand what was going on, but he trusted his sister. The drive home was going to take a while, so they sat in silence and thought about things. About life and love. Would the family ask for some kind of explanation? Or would Alice have seen it all already? Guess they'd just have to wait and see.

May thought back to the week in Denali. It had been so good to get to know them all. Though there had been some surprises. Nick and Tanya taken a liking to each other for example. Or Benjamin's ability to control fire. Hah, no, they certainly hadn't travelled to Denali for that specifically. Because the young Egyptian actually had great control of his gift, he just wasn't sure how to use it in a fight against multiple enemies. He'd been right to describe fire like a living being.

Sending a lonely flame across great distances was hard. Wind an humidity in the air influence it every time. So that was what it was all about, developing strategies. For May to get to know every gift and give new insight and a fresh perspective. Jasper had been sent along as a familiar face and to train everybody some more. Emphasizing on working together. Strengthening bonds. It had worked really well and they had some fun in the process.

Oh, and maybe Alice had seen Dani too. Set up the meeting between her sister and this extraordinary creature. A slight realisation shot through her and she blurted out a question. "Alice had seen it all, hasn't she, Jasper?" The wolf stirred at bit at her raised voice. The empath grinned; "Well, ehm, she's seen a lot, yes, it was a chance to watch you without Seth's presence interfering." May crossed her arms. The move made Jasper grin wider.

"She knew you'd react like this too, of course." So, she tried to look at the others mostly, and you happened to be in those visions also sometimes." She sighed. "You 'flying' by yourself was a surprise though," he continued. "I got a phone-call while we were on our way back from the hunt." - He really didn't like witnessing that. - "She tuned in when Tanya spoke to the others, after discovering 'you'." There was a pause. May reacted; "Yeah, I was glad she did see that, made it easier to bring Dani along." Jasper nodded and thought of something.

"Those poachers, he said, I believe we found them." She stared at him in shock. "They got their punishment." He could sense that she felt torn about this news. "They were bad people, May, he added, and not just because of killing Dani's pack." That got her attention and she motioned him to go on. "After we buried all the bodies, we followed their track to their house." There we found a neglected woman, all alone." I went in by myself to talk to her." She was skinny and filthy." I asked her about the two men, she said they were brothers she lived with."

"And then she wanted to know what happened." I told her they were dead." She showed little emotion to the news and only wanted conformation from me." I explained that their truck was buried under snow, dirt and rocks." A plausible story." She felt relieved and explained she was treated like a maid or slave by them." Now she was free to leave and go live with family she hadn't seen in years." When we left, she was busy packing up stuff in another car." May let out a breath she'd been holding.

"Are you okay with it all?" she inquired." "Yes, he said, though seeing the Romanians drain them wasn't easy." Luckily they did it quickly." Quiet claimed the Mustang once more. Halfway through Canada they made a stop. Dani needed to stretch her paws and have a bathroom break. May bought her some snacks too. After thirty minutes or so they hit the road again.

May was glad to be getting home, to Seth. Of course she was also eager to integrate Dani into Tiny Pack. She'd act as a mediator, sure it would go smoothly. They all reacted to her so positively. Even let her near the new litter of pups. The two males and one female had been born early spring. They were all thriving, full of energy. Names were easy, as their personalities matched their namesakes, as well as their looks.

The first was a big brown male with a boisterous attitude. Emmet Junior wanted to play all the time. The second was also a male, with a mixed coat. His hairs were grey at the base and black at the tips, all over, except his face, which was all grey. It stuck out in all directions, making him look like a porcupine. Which lead to his name; Quilly. He loved to dig for rabbits, mice and moles, so he was always covered in dirt.

Last was small black female with quite the voice. She yapped at everything that moved. And got frustrated when things couldn't be controlled. Like blowing leaves or butterflies. Alice junior or Ally, was a handful. Dani would be happy living with them.

The connection May had made with semi-white wolf was amazing. Their spirits had touched and she had seen Dani's whole history in the animal's mind. The pack she lost today, wasn't the first. The one she'd been born into, all it's members had fallen ill and died one by one. What caused it wasn't clear, neither was the reason for only her surviving. May vowed to herself to watch over her furry, female soulmate very carefully. Or as much as the coming war would allow her. May sighed softly.

They'd been so in tune, that hearing Edward speak and the sounds of Seth's movement in the back, had brought on a simultaneous feeling of longing, for family, their loved ones, and one of loss. The howl was inevitable. And Seth's response moved May deeply.

Dani only heard another wolf calling back, one she felt connected to through May, this strange creature, who wasn't a human. She didn't know what brought them together, instinct and feelings just said to trust this two-legged spirit. The wolf somehow knew it would guide her away from danger to somewhere safe and secure.

Dani had been wary of the other human-like beings she met. Usually they meant trouble, caused fear and pain. The blonde one had seemed friendly, but no, she wouldn't have let her get too close. The wolf had been glad to recognize the good spirit in the flesh. She craved her touch and reassurance. After that, everything was alright, she'd just have to follow her. The backseat of the strange metal box was comfortable. When it started moving there was no worry, just an air of calm and peace.

During their stop in Canada, the animal had realised she was far from home. There was far less snow covering the ground here. And nothing smelled familiar, besides possible prey. Still, as long as she knew May was close, she didn't panic. After moving in the strange vehicle again, they slowed down suddenly. Dani had peeked outside and noticed a long line of rolling boxes around theirs.

Soon however, she couldn't look anymore, as she was covered in a blanket. May told her to stay hidden and be very quiet. The window opened and strange humans talked to the two in the car. To a question the answer had been "our dog" and "she always sleeps like that". The tip of her nearly-white nose showing from under her cover, had been enough to get the all clear. They crossed the border easily.

It wasn't long now, before they reached home. May was getting exited and restless. Jasper had grinned, understanding completely. He too longed to hold Alice and talk. Among other things. Just five more miles to go. Something sandy and big flashed by amongst the trees. Feelings of love flared from May. Her brother stopped the car, after turning into a dirt-road.

It was dark outside, but the clouds were disappearing and stars started to show. May got out swiftly and slid her chair forward as far as possible. Pulling the blanket away, she alerted Dani that this was where they belonged. Once her paws touched the ground, she started checking her surroundings. Walking a few steps, she sniffed the air, sensing another canine close by. May motioned her to wait. The vampire moved away several yards, but stayed in sight.

A moment later Seth stepped out in front of her, wearing only cut-offs. With a big smile on his face he hugged her tight, breathing in her scent. Leaning back, the couple looked at each other, eyes full of love and desire. They crashed their lips together in a passionate kiss. "I've missed you so much!" they said simultaneously. Jasper cleared his throat; "I'll see you two later then?" They nodded and kissed again while the empath drove off calmly.

Seth turned to look at Dani. "So, this is the wolf I'll have to compete with now, he chided, for your attention." May smiled and rubbed his arm. "Isn't she beautiful?" He arched an eyebrow. "Oh, come on, she reacted, you know you'll always be number one." Another kiss emphasized her words. "And she knows it too," she added. "Go on and meet." She motioned both with her arms. Wolf and wolf-man moved towards each other slowly.

When there were only three yards left between them, Seth crouched down, holding out his hand. Dani studied this human carefully. Hearing his heartbeat, feeling his warmth and smelling his scent. There was something about him …. This was the canine she sensed before, how could that be? Confused she looked to May. Her new friend's body language said trust and being at home.

So, she went with that and gently pressed her wet nose to the man's hand. Relief made Seth's muscles relax, which in turn caused her to wag her tail. Without thinking he responded to that with a wolfy-smile, his tongue flopping out to the side. May giggled. "See, she said, you two will get along just fine."

The three of them walked off into the woods, towards Tiny Pack's lair or den. They took their time, revelling in each others company. Dani had her nose to the ground the whole time, taking in all the scents. "She often wanders off this way," May commented. "It saved her life." Not long after this rather serious remark, the wolf took off running, having detected some small prey. The two lovers let her go, they'd track her down easily. The rabbit was devoured quickly. "She's a good hunter," Seth said. They gazed up at the moon, peaking from behind the clouds. So peaceful.

Several hours later the little group sensed they were near their destination. Dani perked up her ears to a noise in the distance. Em junior came crashing through the bushes, onto the clearing. He stopped in his tracks, seeing the stranger there. The semi-white wolf flattened her ears back and laid down on the ground. The alpha pair was right behind the pup. They stood in front of him protectively, their hackles raised, lips pulled up. Both let out a warning growl.

The other adults fell in line behind them, surrounding all the pups together. Quilly and Ally tried to see what the commotion was all about through their parents legs. May sat down beside her female soulmate, her hand on her back for support. Seth retreated to the trees so he could phase. It would easier to communicate wolf-style.

Back at the Cullen-house everybody already knew what was going on. Alice had seen the three arriving, so she sent Seth to go and meet them. Let the young couple reunite in peace. The seer herself was also glad to have her mate back. She flung her arms around his neck, the moment he walked in the door. Jasper shared their love with the rest of the family, sending it all through the rooms on the ground floor. Then they sat down, so he could share what had happened in Denali all week.

His wife had not seen exactly everything, she kept checks on The Volturi too, as best she could. Noticing that she saw more then before, though nothing important, containing the upcoming war. Edward and Carlisle had deduced that Nahuel's sisters now only attended certain meetings, instead of following the kings around all the time. They talked some more about what plans still needed to be made. Mixing it up with just chit chat. After some TV and music, everyone retreated to their rooms. Waiting for May and Seth was useless, they'd be out all night.

Back in the woods, Dani had reacted the way she should. Laying very still, she waited for one of Tiny Pack to approach. Alpha male Mogo moved towards her and May, who remained by her new friend's side. He circled them slowly, assessing if this strange female posed a threat to his family. Closing in enough to touch her, he put one of his front paws on her neck. In response, Dani rolled over onto her back, exposing her throat. Mogo lowered his head, glancing at May while opening his jaws.

They were face to face for a second and she cocked her head to the side, whining softly. The vampire nicknamed wolf-girl wanted him to go easy on this special soul. Mogo proceeded, clamping down on the semi-white wolf's voice-box gently to make his point. This dark-charcoal-grey male was boss here. She let it happen and waited for him to finish. When he did, he lifted his head and looked at his pack.

This was the signal for the others to join him. May got out of the way. Seth had watched from the sideline, ready to intervene if necessary. He was glad he wasn't needed. All the wolves repeated Mogo's actions to emphasize her new status as the lowest in rank. Even the pups had a go at her, shaking the scruff of her neck a bit. Dani didn't care about that, she felt happy, her tongue lolling out and her tail wagging slowly.

After that, May and Seth just watched them for a while, sitting side by side. This meeting had gone well, like 'textbook', but it had been intense. So, an hour later the whole pack had curled up and fallen asleep. The big sandy spirit-wolf phased back. Holding hands, the couple walked back to the Cullen-house. And into their room. Seth yawned, he felt tired and hated it. Now was the time to make out with his girlfriend.

May smiled at him. "Come on, she said, let's just cuddle up on the bed." You need your rest." We have plenty of time tomorrow and many days after that, because I'm not leaving you again, ever." Some lazy kisses later he had dozed off in her arms. In the morning his stomach called for breakfast, as well as some family members. Of course they were questioned about last night. And teased by Emmet. They told them pretty much everything. May shared some memories through Renesmee. All the women commented on how beautiful Dani looked.

Even Rose, though she had voiced her distaste at May's animalistic behaviour. She had only grinned in response. "Hey, I'm wolf-girl remember, you named me, so I'm going to earn it all the way." Laughs erupted at that statement. The rest of the day was dedicated to having fun and reuniting. It had to get serious again quick enough. During a big meeting with Sam's pack, a location for the fight was discussed. They had to lead the Volturi somewhere isolated, so there would be no collateral damage.

The decision fell on Coats Island, Canada. It was uninhabited, 2123 square miles of arctic tundra, in the middle of Hudson Bay. The main living beings there were caribou, it was their reservation. It was perfect.

The days up until Christmas were filled with more training, strategizing and looking in on the enemy. The seer and her copycat sister had informed everyone that their plan for the battlefield would work. Unfortunately many other things remained hazy. Decisions kept changing, maybe on purpose. The holidays were celebrated big, as were the birthdays in the new year. No one knew for sure if these were going to be their last. The date of the war became clearer and clearer. It would be this month, that much was sure.

Even nature sent signals of something big happening, out into the sky. The weather had been off, different. Alice even got some slight headaches because of this. Suddenly, the date was set, at the last Saturday of January 2010. As a chain-reaction all the fighters started making arrangements. Stories for the outsiders at home were prepared. Luggage was packed and ready to go.

Special cars were bought, to deal with the extreme conditions. Big four-wheel drives, with custom made snow-tires and other adaptations for the sub-zero temperatures. Early Thursday morning the house was locked up while the group walked to their vehicles.

After a few steps however, they all froze, smelling some unexpected visitors coming their way. In the distance five figures appeared, three with a heartbeat and two without. The three first ones looked like human men, but their scent was off. The two others were vampires, no doubt. A man and a woman, walking hand in hand as mates. When they were within a hundred yards, May darted forward, away from the rest. The youngest looking human-like man did the same. They stopped with plenty of space between them and stared at each other.

Recognition flashed over their faces as they both inhaled deeply. Seconds turned into minutes, until neither one of them could stand the silence anymore. "You!" they exclaimed simultaneously. The question "What are you doing here?" followed the same way, at a surprised and curious tone. Meanwhile the four companions of the man had joined him. Carlisle and Edward had joined May.

Seth lingered for a moment, feeling worried and a tiny bit jealous. With a few big strides he placed himself behind his girlfriend, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Who's that guy and how do you know him?" he whispered in her ear.

May smiled, realising what he was feeling. She turned her head slightly and looked at him out of the corner of her eye. "Smell, she told him, and think of a memory I once showed you." Seth did just that and caught a musky scent with a hint of … sulpha. His eyes widened and his jaw dropped a little. He gave her a look that said 'Really?'. One of the other men with a heartbeat had a similar conversation with the guy May recognized. He seemed the oldest out of them, somewhere in his late thirties. His hand was on the shoulder of his youngest companion.

"Pjotr, he asked softly, you know this female vampire with the yellow eyes?" He had a thick East-European accent. He nodded; "Yes, I saw her in Russia, six years ago, for a moment, when I was hunting." Nothing happened, we were both just surprised." I forgot about the meeting when I changed back." Sorry, Lucian, after so many centuries, recollection of wolf-memories is still my weak point." A sigh escaped Lucian's lips. He decided to take the lead, but glanced at the two vampires first. The male nodded once in understanding.

"Well, hello, he started, we seem to have gotten to a false start." Let me introduce myself, I am Lucian, leader of our group of three werewolves." Or Children of the Moon, as we are also known." There's no need to hide this fact now, so I'm being straight forward." He took a pause to asses our reaction. Everyone stayed calm, with some help from Jasper. "As you probably overheard, he continued, this young man beside me is Pjotr." He joined us 400 years ago." The man behind me is Boris, he's been my loyal friend for a millennium."

"Both of us have witnessed the cruelty of Caius first hand." That's why we want to join your side in the war." He stopped with that. Carlisle was glad, he really wanted to ask questions. But first some introductions of his own were needed. "Hello, nice to meet you all, he said, I am Carlisle, appointed leader of part of this group around me." Though we see ourselves more as a family." Which makes kind of the father." He proceeded to introduce Edward, May, Seth and the rest. It was quite the list, so he waited a moment for them to absorb the information.

Satisfied they got it, he went on. "You said you faced Caius, may I ask how you survived?" This might have seemed a odd question, but by standard knowledge, real werewolves were wild in their animal form. They were thought to have no rational mind and therefore for Lucian to remember Caius, he had to be in his human form.

A grimace crossed the wolf-leader's face. "We have survived, he said curtly, because we have evolved." We wouldn't be here, if we were still mindless beasts during every full moon." Once, a very smart professor was bitten, he explained, and he changed everything." Isaac was my creator and he taught me all I know." He was also the one who nearly killed Caius, because of his intellect." I'm sorry he can't be here, but I hope I can avenge him." Carlisle nodded and apologized for offending Lucian. He accepted.

The Cullen coven-leader wanted to ask more, but May touched him. She was curious about something too. "Can I ask something too?" she inquired. "Of course" was the answer. "Do you always smell the same, in either form?" Lucian's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Hmm, didn't expect that one," he stated. "But my answer is yes, pretty much." It's weaker though in our human form, the wolf characteristics."

He smiled, knowing where this was going. "Your nose is telling you different right now, huh?" he asked. "Yes" was her reply. "That's because right now we're in a month with a blue moon." *Tjirp, tjirp (cricket sounds)* All remained quiet, until Oliver raised his hand. "That's when there's a second full moon within 31 days, right?"

Lucian was pleased. "Yes, that's right young man, you are very smart." Here in America it showed itself on new-year's eve after the first on December 2nd." So, as it was officially January already, this whole month, the force of the moon is stronger." We receive more energy from it and are therefore stronger." Hence the reason for our scent also being more pronounced." Rose wrinkled her nose; you can say that again, she thought.

"In two days, Lucian continued, there's another full moon." And we already feel the pull, because this time we will change the moment it rises above the horizon." There were some shocked reactions among the vampires. "Yes, Lucian explained further, that's a big difference." We don't have to wait until it is at it's highest and it doesn't have to be dark."

Carlisle was positively surprised. "This is good news, he said, we seemed to have gotten a good omen, because the battle will be on Saturday." Now that started a conversation about stigma's and misguided beliefs. The Children of the Moon were pleasantly surprised by the open minded thoughts of the Cullens. A vice versa. After half an hour, Edward cleared his throat.

"Father, he said, there are some more guests who haven't introduced themselves yet." Carlisle coughed in embarrassment. "Sorry, he said to the two vampires, I got carried away." They both smiled. "That's alright, the man said, we understand." We'll be brief, seeing that your 'son' is also a mindreader, like my wife." He can fill in the details." Edward grimaced, he didn't like this. But, as there was nothing he could do about it, he got over this fact quickly.

"We are Theodore and Yvanka, the last members of the Volkodlak coven from Slovenia." We have a treaty with Lucian's group, just like you have with the Quileute spirit-wolves." Beside my wife's mindreading, she and I can also communicate telepathically." We're not sure why, but we believe it's because of our life-long bond."

"It helps a lot during a full moon, when the guys can't talk." We act as kind of a go-between or translator when Lucian, Boris or Pjotr need it." The five 'friends' exchanged some knowing looks. This story sparked another conversation, while everyone got into the cars. With the extra guests it was a bit tight, but they managed. Last discovery during their talk; their similarities in diet. The three werewolves also hunted animals. And sometimes some criminals. Difference: most of their prey was eaten, so less evidence was left.

.

Well, again a lot of information. Sorry, hope you could handle it.

.

And oops, in case you haven't noticed, I made some mistakes in the previous chapter, fact wise. I corrected them here, at the beginning. Thanks for pointing one out to me, GodisGood3.

.

I found the info about what a blue moon is, when I searched for the date of the first full moon in January 2010. Made for some good inspiration, when it came to the real werewolves.

.

When you do as Bella in the first book and type in 'Vampires A – Z' on Google, you can find the Volkodlak. But the only information there is, that this 'coven' is linked somehow to the appearance of the werewolf. I made into a treaty-thing.

.

Oh yeah, for movie-fans; I of course borrowed the name Lucian from Underworld. (isn't weird that Michael Sheen plays a werewolf-leader there and later, in Twilight, he's a vampire-king. And Robert Pattison, he's an Edward in Twilight, but later a Jacob in Water for the Elephants)
