Chapter 37: The Amazons – Charge!

.

Kachiri

The big stupid ape charging first must be that Ulrich guy the Cullens told us about. I shook my head as he went straight for the werewolves. Boris intercepted him and threw him to the side, shredding the clothes on the upper half of his body. Others began to run at us too, there was no holding back. So I moved also, my sisters at my side. The frontline of the Volturi consisted mostly of men, unknown foot-soldiers.

Zafrina halted a second to blind the three in front of us. Senna and I took them out quickly, going forward to the next. A good thing we did, as Patrick had lit some of the coal-deposits already and Benjamin made use of them fast. Three burning balls flew down at our victims, turning them to ash.

I set my sights on the three kings, but couldn't see them anymore. Their wives neither. They seemed to have disappeared. This must be the work of a gifted vampire. Grrr! How frustrating! Hopefully Edward and Yvanka still had a lead on them.

Looking around, I tried to find another target. On some rocks to the side stood a female with her hands up in the air. I wondered what she was doing. She wasn't here to fight it seemed. I ran in her direction. An enemy is an enemy, right? But Edward came to me briefly to stop me. "No, he said, she's helping all of us to stay undetected from humans." 'What do you mean?' I asked in thought. 'How?' There were none on the island.

"She can disrupt signals from machines in the sky," he explained. "Machines that take pictures of everything." Some maybe watching the caribou herd here." I nodded in understanding and we had changed direction while we talked. Jane and Alec were the most dangerous, besides Aro and his brothers. Others had them in their sights too.

The Romanians for example. And Sam, the black alpha wolf. The twins noticed and tried desperately to defend themselves. Their gifts didn't work, courtesy of Bella. Her shield was amazing and with all the practise, very powerful. Hah, the little creeps were getting anxious! Backing away to where the kings had been.

"They're still there, Edward said, a shield of invisibility is covering them." Good, he could hear them. This meant that this shield had it's limits. The path to our goal though, was full of enemy fighters to plough through. While I ripped up somebody else, I glanced at Bella's group. Protecting them was my main thought, especially Nessie and Nahuel.

I loved those two kids! Oh, yes, I know he isn't a kid anymore, but still a lot younger than me and my sisters. His human side contributed to it too. They were doing well, even with more coming at them. Huilen looked ferocious, intercepting any threat to her nephew. That little woman was not to be messed with! Jake's pack had retreated closer to him and his imprint.

Hmm, I know about it, someone spilled the beans (strange expression that is by the way). Well, I understood and didn't judge. Those two needed each other. Refocusing on the enemy I stepped it up a notch, but so did they. More experienced ones were sent our way. Zafrina tried to blind and fight at the same time. Senna roared as she got punched in the face. Hah! You made her angry fool!, I thought.

My sisters and I gave each other a look; Let free that inner beast! CHARGE!

.

Zafrina

It was mayhem. All around us people were fighting. Flaming balls flew everywhere, setting defeated enemies on fire. You had to watch where you were going. Benjamin was a busy guy. At the other side of the field though, 'Speedy' (or Patrick) was in trouble. The Volturi also seemed to have a lightning fast one on their side and he was blocking him. Their battle was hard to follow, because of their gift, even for other vampires.

They flashed in and out of focus, a tangle of limbs. We had to help, so we took out our lighters. For a few minutes, the young Egyptian was out of ammunition. So he switched to knocking enemies over with gusts of air. With tense muscles and gritted teeth he continued. They seemed to notice his temporary weakness. I made my sisters aware of this, as he needed a hand.

We moved in Benjamin and Tia's direction, throwing our lighters on the coal-deposites we came across. Briefly I wondered if we had enough coals, the stream of opponents seemed endless. "You are right, Edward commented from a distance, because they've got more troops arriving." They've been delayed."

'How many more?' I thought. He held up all of his fingers two times, before engaging another enemy. I let out a frustrated growl. No time to waste! I doubled my efforts, getting our 'finisher' back on track. Again fires were burning. No need for the ones that were down to get back up. Argh! If we could just take out the three kings, a lot of the others would give up. But we couldn't be sure where they were, with that invisibility shield.

Until one of the flaming balls landed close to it apparently. It spooked the little dark-skinned girl who had hissed at me, clinging to Aro. She bolted from under 'her' protection, running away from the battlefield. Benjamin spotted her too and reacted immediately. But so did the two mindreaders and May. "Nooo!" they screamed simultaneously.

The burning coals hit something and the then the slightly crumbling ball changed direction. Barely missing some heads, it grazed Lucian's shoulder and hit a tree. He howled in pain and lashed out at anyone close. Unfortunately Theodore was there. He got backhanded into Paul who was temporary winded before getting up again. The dark-grey spiritwolf snarled at the vampire and the werewolf-leader, but went back to business quick.

Lucian calmed down fast also, with some help from Jasper. His wound was healing already. Yvanka explained that Renata, Aro's personal guard, had become stronger. Her shield reached a lot further than before. It repelled any kind of physical attack. Damn, as if the other shield wasn't enough! The whole deal caused a momentary distraction for everyone.

Amun used this to chase after Rain, the dark girl who fled. Kebi was stuck to his side of course. Together they fought off any Volturi blocking their way. And soon we were all fighting again. Teams had formed on our side. Two, three, four people or wolves worked as a unit efficiently. Now we had to come up with a new plan for those shields.

If we could just see them, then we would have a chance. I could blind those two, so they'd drop that defensive layer. Edward read my mind and whispered; "I can see them, through their eyes, and have an idea which involves Benjamin." Me and my sisters understood immediately what needed to be done. Senna rushed towards a tree and ripped off a big branch. Kachiri did the same.

.

Senna

My sister and I took the branches and held them in one of the fires. They caught fire and we were ready for clean up-duty. With Zafrina there to help defend us, we went around the field, burning fallen enemies. Some were only missing limbs, slowing their movement; they became a target too. I felt ferocious, a warrior, in the zone of fighting. Never in our lives we'd been in a war like this.

Things had always been quite peaceful in the rainforest. Now we were in opposite surroundings, defending ourselves. At home I didn't feel the need to speak much, we understood each other without words. But here, at this moment, growls bubbled up from inside me and I wanted to scream at our enemy. Grrr, getting hit was no fun! How dare they go for my face! Those filthy roaches were going to pay.

They brought out the panther in me. The cougar, the anaconda. Get out of my way! A random male blocked my path, while he battled Esme. I dropped my dying 'torch' in the snow and jumped on his back.

He was totally surprised as I tore out his throat. And threw him towards Kachiri. Esme nodded a thanks, continuing to the next. Meanwhile Edward had put his plan in motion. Talking to May first, adding a brief touch. She made her way over to Nessie to borrow her for a moment. Bella wasn't happy, but as the two went towards Benjamin, the Egyptian met them half way. The three turned towards the Volturi side as the girls showed him something.

Realisation spread across his face before he crouched down and put his hand on the ground. A slight rumble could be heard, the earth beneath our feet trembling lightly. I think I knew what he was up to. Unfortunately others understood too, so the small group was mobbed.

May jumped away with Nessie on her back, fighting off two opponents. Seth came to her aid while they slowly retreated. Benjamin got help also, from Kate and Garret. Me and my sisters decided to pitch in as well. We wanted him to complete his move.

Arrgh, the kings could be slipping away now, with all the attention here. It was chaos in the centre. Benjamin gave it his all, throwing rocks and snowballs. Our enemies made torches too and they needed to be put out. May saw his struggle and returned to his side after dropping off Nessie. On her way she had shed her coat to reveal only a spaghetti-top. Skin contact was her goal, so the Egyptian's shirt got torn at the upper back.

They stood in an arrow-form, one shoulder touching, while they fought together. It was an spectacular sight.

The Children of the Moon were also something to behold. With their height and strength they were no easy adversaries. Many who engaged them got away with torn clothes at least. Ulrich, the big ape, and Boris were breathing heavily at one another. Both were damaged, had bite marks. You could tell they stung, but nothing more.

Real werewolves weren't affected by venom. They reacted to it the same way another vampire would. And vice versa. That's why Caius feared them so much. That blonde old bat.

He wasn't stupid though, with his 3000 years. He had a plan of his own in place. Because suddenly the spirit-wolves became a specific target. Leah, Collin and Brady were got jumped, Volturi-guards clung to their backs, clawing at their flesh. They howled and rolled over in the snow to get them off. That helped, but only for a few seconds, then they were on top again.

It distracted the others too, as they were all connected. Jacob was torn between helping them or staying with Nessie. I made a split decision and went to help them, without my sisters. And I wasn't alone, Pjotr came too, flashing across the field. From two angles we came closer and closer, dodging others on the way.

We had a bad feeling, seeing those three bleeding and in pain. Just five more yards …. The enemies were on their shoulders now and lowered their heads. We sailed through the air, they sank their teeth in the wolves' ears. The agonizing whines which followed made everyone on our side flinch.

Little fact:

Did you know they got the ages of the Volturi kings backwards in the movies?

Caius is actually the oldest and Marcus the youngest. Aro was turned in his mid-twenties, Caius in his late forties and Marcus in his late teens.
