"They've been what!" Bonnie cried in surprise.
Bonnie was sitting in her office; wearing a very surprised expression. The FBI building was recent so they had all the latest technology at their fingertips. Bonnie had spent many sleepless nights at her office; she actually spent more time there; then at her home. Her job was her life. She actually hated any time off she got. At the moment Sloane had just given her astounding news.
"I don't know" Sloane shrugged.
In the past six years, Sloane had gotten married and had two babies. She was now a working Mum and she loved her life. A tiny part of Bonnie envied her college.
"The Bulgarian Government has been hiding Elijah Mikaelson!" Bonnie repeated.
Sloane just nodded.
"Where is he now?" Bonnie demanded.
"He managed to slip away before we could get them" Sloane confessed.
Bonnie rolled her eyes, he was Mikaelson and wouldn't be easy to find. She dismissed her and grabbed her bag to go to lunch. There was a cafe down the road which is where she always went to lunch. On her way there; she was still irritated at this doomed case that seems to be going on forever. She thought that as soon as the Empire collapsed then it would be easy from there.
How wrong she was.
Bonnie bumped into someone as she was about to go into the cafe. She was about to apologise but then she caught sight of him and began to stare a little. He had raven black hair and the most intense blue eyes that she'd ever seen. The guy was wearing a leather jacket giving him a rebellious look.
"Sorry" he smiled.
His eyes scanned her up and down which caused her to blush.
"It was my fault; I wasn't looking where I was going" Bonnie corrected.
"Are you going in?" He asked, indicating the cafe.
"Yeah" Bonnie nodded.
"Do you want to get a cup of coffee of something?" He asked.
Joy blossomed in her soul; her day suddenly got a lot better.
"Yeah" Bonnie agreed, "My name is Bonnie; what's yours?"
"Damon"

Klaus had been driving for five hours straight and it was past midnight. Caroline had fallen asleep next to him and his son was asleep in the back. A sudden cruel thought entered Klaus' head. What if they'll always be running? The FBI won't stop until he's in prison and he didn't want his family to fall apart. He couldn't help but think of what would happen if he was caught. Caroline would have a short time in jail because she's aiding and harbouring a criminal. Henrik would be sent into the system and neither of them would ever see him again. He would get new parents and a new father. That thought stung him like a knife to the chest. Klaus suddenly had sympathy for Kol and Meredith who never got to raise their child.
What kind of life can her offer them on the run? His boy will never be able to have a normal childhood, to go to school and have friends. What would he do when he found out who his father really is? That was another thought that was weighing heavily on his mind. Would he forgive him or would he never see his son again. What about Caroline? She'll never be happy, living the nomadic lifestyle. A small tear tumbled down his face. Klaus wished he was free and that he wouldn't have to live in constant paranoia that he'd be found. That Bennett was going to chase him to the ends of the earth.
Suddenly his wife began to stir and lazily opened her eyes. She let out a yawn and drank some juice to cure her dry throat. Caroline looked over at Klaus who looked worn down that only years on the run could do to a person. It was the look that was not one of a free man.
"Do you want to talk?" she asked.
She wasn't going to try and comfort him by saying that, 'it will all be alright' because they both knew it wouldn't be.
"I just thought that we could live in peace" Klaus confessed, "I allowed myself to hope that it was all over. But it'll never be over"
Caroline nodded in understanding.
"We will always be on the run" she agreed, "But at least we're all together"
"But for how long?"
...
Kol was practically dragged on an interrogation room and shoved roughly on the seat. Apparently the FBI wanted to see him. Kol knew that they must be desperate if they were talking to him. A few minutes later his long-time adversary and foe came into the room and sat directly in front of him. Kol noticed that she moved with more of a spring in her step and he swore he saw a faint smile on her thin lips.
"What do you want?" Kol asked, getting straight to business.
"Elijah was being protected by the Bulgarian Government" Bonnie began.
Kol froze.
"But I'm guessing you already knew that" Bonnie mused.
Kol's heart sank; have they captured his brother?
"Elijah managed to escape"
Much to Bonnie's irritation; Kol let out a sigh of relief.
"Where might Elijah go?" We want you to help us" Bonnie demanded.
Kol couldn't believe that they'd even asked him that. He would never betray his family to the FBI and they should know that by now.
"Of course I won't" Kol laughed, "Why would you ask me now when I've always refused you in the past"
"Is there anything you want" Bonnie pleaded, "A private cell? We could shorten your sentence?"
Kol was about to tell her where she could go but then he had a beautiful idea. He loved Elijah but there was someone he loved more. This could be the opportunity he'd always dreamed of.
"There is something I want" Kol admitted.
"What is it?" wondered a happy Bonnie.
"I want weekly visits from my son" Kol smiled, "I will accept nothing else"
Bonnie gaped at him for a moment. Elijah had completely disappeared and they needed help. She knew that Rebekah would never betray her brother but apparently there was someone that Kol loved more. The boy's parents would never agree to it but yet again she was the FBI and maybe she didn't need their permission.
"Fine" Bonnie caved, "Now tell us what we want to know"
"Not until I see my son" Kol said strongly.
...
"NO WAY!" John yelled.
They were at a safe house; thirty miles from the prison. John and Jenna were unpacking some of their things and Mikael was eating his lunch upstairs. Bonnie and the Gilbert's were standing in the cream kitchen. The place looked as blank as a military house.
"We need that information" Bonnie reminded them, "Elijah is still on the loose and still a threat"
"I DON'T CARE!" John boomed.
"He doesn't even know that he's adopted" Jenna added, "He's only six years old"
Bonnie was growing irritated at their non-cooperation. Mikael entered the room holding his plate and placed it on the side.
"I know" Mikael told his parents.
They both looked at him with shocked expressions. Mikael looked up at them with his famous, 'hand in the cookie jar' look.
"I heard you talking when that lady came over" Mikael explained, "I want to talk to him"
John bent down low so he came to the child's eye level. Bonnie watched curiously as she was not very experienced with children.
"He is a very bad man" John told him.
"I want to see him anyway" Mikael pressed.
Bonnie felt awkward in this family scene. John rose up to face her.
"No" he refused.
Mikael let out a groan of protest.
"Listen, he'll be safe" Bonnie assured him, "And when we find Elijah, we'll no longer have to keep our promise"
John still looked conflicted.
"You're not giving me a choice; are you?" John read between the lines.
"No" Bonnie shook her head.
...
The date had been set for three days' time. Kol felt a happiness that he hadn't felt for a long time. For once in six years, he actually had something to look forward to. When they day finally arrived; he was given the same room that he met Agent Bennett in. This time there was a tough, burly guard standing in the middle of the room and they'd chained him to the floor.
"No touching!" the guard barked.
"Fine" Kol agreed desperately.
His boy finally arrived in the room. For the first few moments they just stared at each other; soaking in the other's appearance. The boy stared at his father in shock, he felt nervous being this close. Kol looked at the boy who was the spitting image of him when he was that age. It filled him with a fatherly pride to see his boy. Happiness gripped him as he stared at his son for the first time. The boy sat before him looking as nervous as he felt.
"Hello" Kol smiled a genuine smile for the first time in years.
"They tell me that you're my daddy" the child said.
"That's right" Kol nodded.
"So I'm half English?" the boy smiled.
"Yes, you are" Kol chuckled but then suddenly said in a rush, "How are you? Are you happy? Do your adoptive parents treat you right?"
Kol's head was buzzing with a thousand questions for his son. His son smiled back a smile that he's inherited of him.
"I'm good" he nodded, "I love my parents"
"Good" Kol said.
The thought of his other father filled Kol with rage that he needed to contain in front of his son. The boy decided to get straight to the question that was troubling him the most.
"Did you want me?" Mikael questioned.
Kol wanted to reach out and comfort his sad child and almost did but the chains restrained him.
"No touching!" the guard snapped.
Kol ignored him.
"Of course I did!" Kol was almost in tears himself, "I love you so much and you and your mother and been the only things I've been thinking about. You were so loved. Remember that"
Mikael smiled and looked reassured and Kol smiled with him.
"Tell me something about you" Kol said.
"I love sports and running around" Mikael beamed, "I also love playing with my friends"
"Are you popular?"
"Yes, well with this face how can I not be" Mikael wiggled his eyebrows cheekily.
Kol laughed at his son who reminded him of himself so much.
"I suppose I have you to thank for that"
"You're welcome" Kol laughed.
"What about you?" Mikael repeated the question.
"Before I met your mother I used to love going to bars" Kol confessed, "I was very popular with women"
"How did you meet my mother?"
Father and son talked for two hours straight but all too soon, his son had to leave. Kol's world immediately darkened and panic infected his senses. Mikael looked reluctant to part as well but Bonnie and the guard closed in.
"It's time to go" Bonne demanded.
"Can I at least hug him" Kol pleaded.
"Make it quick" Bonnie rolled her eyes.
Mikael hugged his father goodbye. Kol could smell his child like scent and he was instantly at peace but it ended too soon as Bonnie tugged him away and was practically dragging him because he didn't want to leave. Kol felt his heart break.
"Back to your cell"
...
Klaus and Caroline arrived at yet another hotel. He instantly got out his phone and begun dialling a number. Caroline and Henrik heaved the bags out of the car.
"Marcel!" he growled into the phone, "Now is not the time for you to suddenly grow a conscience. Call me back!"
Klaus roughly put his phone in his pocket and helped his family with the bags. Henrik ran a little ahead giving his parents some time to talk.
"Is Marcel not helping us?" Caroline asked.
"Marcel says he's gone straight and is now avoiding my calls" Klaus grumbled, "He's never let me down before"
"Is there someone else you can call?" Caroline questioned.
"Not without giving us away"
The hotel was at least a hundred years old and the staff seemed to reflect the building. All of them looked old enough to be Klaus' grandparent. There weren't many other guests, just a few travellers passing through. The Eagle's song; 'Hotel California' cropped up in Klaus' mind. Henrik was already at the desk and the receptionist was a woman called Nora, (according to her name tag). Caroline wasn't bothered as she'd slept in worse places. Henrik felt a little frightened in his new surroundings. Klaus paid for a family room and followed the aged man to number 13. The irony of the number didn't improve Henrik's mood.
The room itself was spotless but there was a bit of damp in the middle of the room. There was one double bed and one single bed. The door on the left led to a shower room and toilet that stank with the smell of too many air fresheners. While the door on the right led to a small wardrobe that still had a few bits of other people's clothes in it which dated the room. They found go-go boots and a shirt that looked older than Caroline and Klaus put together.
"When are we going home?" Henrik whined.
Henrik sat on his bed and crossed his arms in frustration. Caroline gave Klaus a look that said: go talk to him. Klaus sat next to Henrik and tried to find the right words.
"We won't be going home" Klaus told him.
"Not ever?" Henrik cried.
"Never" Klaus shook his head, "This will be how we'll live from now on"
"Why can't be go home?"
The boy's eyes looked pleading for answers.
"We just can't for now" Klaus tried to dodge the subject.
Henrik looked mad and jumped off his bed and headed for the bathroom.
"You're not telling me everything" Henrik stormed before he slammed the door behind him.
Caroline just continued unpacking their bags without saying a word. Klaus was watching her closely. Henrik and Caroline were the best things that ever happened to him. He was terrified of losing them and Henrik growing up without him and Caroline finding another man; a man that can be with her in the open, who won't condemn her to a life on the run. Klaus knew that Caroline deserved better then all of this.
"He's too young" Klaus whispered, "We can tell him when he's old enough"
Klaus had made sure that his son wasn't brought up like he was. Abused and forced into crime. Klaus wanted to do what his father didn't and give his child and his wife love.
"I agree" Caroline nodded as she finished the last of the packing.
Klaus nodded.
"But I'm getting tired of running" Caroline confessed.
Fear hit Klaus' soul like a sledge hammer. Was she leaving him?
"Are you leaving?" Klaus gasped in shock.
Caroline shook her head and gave a ghost of a smile.
"Of course not" Caroline answered, "But that doesn't mean I like being on the run. Has Marcel rung you back yet?"
…
Marcel sat in his New York Apartment while his teenage, adoptive daughter did her homework on her laptop. His mind was troubled by the phone call of an old friend. He had never let Klaus down before. They'd known each other since childhood and he'd always delivered. But this time was different because he had someone to think about. Davina was his life now and he had walked away from his old life a long time ago and was happier for it. Now he had a few legitimate businesses and he's managed to not get arrested. But he knew that if he helped Klaus; he'd be pushing his luck.
Davina was more important in Marcel's eyes. If he went to prison she would be back at the foster home and that he could not allow. Davina had hated it there and she was happy with him. Not only did he have her but he also had a girlfriend called Camie who he adored. They didn't know about his past and he wanted to keep it that way. Klaus had left him 20 voice messages but he'd deleted them all. Crime was no longer a part of his life. Yet a part of him still felt guilty about abandoning his long-time friend. Marcel had always been there for Klaus.
But things change…
