Longish chapter
It was getting cold, so they were going to have to leave soon. Maya slowly sat up, knowing Riley had started to doze off.
Riley groaned as she rolled down her friend, ending up lying on Maya's legs.
Maya laughed quietly, bent down, and kissed the top of Riley's head. "We have to go back to the hotel, Riles."
Riley groaned again. "Five more minutes..."
Maya laughed again. "It's almost ten o'clock at night, Riley, it's not morning."
Riley suddenly sat up and hugged Maya close.
Maya hugged her back and smiled.
"I'm cold, Maya..."
Maya hugged her even closer, resting her chin on Riley's shoulder. "Let's go over to Shawn and your dad. They'll take us back to the hotel."
Riley nodded against Maya's shoulder but she didn't let go.
Maya sighed and stayed in the embrace that Riley held them in. Maya eventually turned her head and whispered into Riley's ear, "We have to leave at some point, Riles."
"I know."
Maya shrugged out of the embrace and stood up, much to Riley's disappointment. Maya smiled, then extended a hand for Riley to grab.
Riley reluctantly grabbed it and was pulled to her feet.
Maya lightly kissed her on the forehead. "Sorry, but we need to head back. We can snuggle later, okay?"
Riley nodded. "Yeah, okay. Thanks."
Maya smiled again, then went on her way over to Cory and Shawn. Once she realized Riley wasn't following, she turned around and went back, taking Riley's hand. "Come on, let's go."
Riley sighed, allowing Maya to pull her along.
Once they got over to Cory and Shawn, they realized that the boys had fallen asleep. Riley and Maya grinned at each other, then jumped on the boys, startling them awake.
Shawn sat up quickly and Cory yelped. Shawn and Cory then both realized that the girls were looking at them so they eased up. "Oh, it's just you guys," Shawn aknowledged. "Ready to go back?"
Maya and Riley both nodded, so the boys stood up and led the way back to the car. One they got inside the car, Riley immediately started to doze off again.
Maya smiled at her sleepy friend and let Riley lean on her shoulder.
Cory smiled a little. "We are heading back to the hotel right now. You shouldn't let Riley sleep too much."
Maya looked at Riley and whispered, "Don't sleep, little plant, wait until we get there."
Riley groaned. "Do I have to?"
Maya smiled. "Yes or you can't snuggle with me later."
Riley quickly sat up, which made Maya laugh. "Okay, fine, I won't sleep yet..."
Maya playfully kissed her cheek. "I knew you would listen if I said that."
Riley shrugged. "Yeah, yeah, you know me well."
Once they finally got back to the hotel, Riley, who had trouble doing, had listened to Maya and stayed awake. They then all got out of the car and went up to their hotel room, and when they got inside, they all sighed a sigh of relief. Riley immediately flopped down on the bed, not even bothering to get into her pajamas.
Maya walked over to her and smiled. "What, you're tired? No way!" Then she sat down next to her and softly intructed, "You should get into your pajamas, it's not comfortable to sleep in your clothes."
Riley groaned. "Fine... I'll do it."
Maya stood up and extended her hand for Riley again.
Riley grabbing it and was pulled to her feet, then smiled at Maya and went to go change.
When she left, Maya smiled as well. 'She's such a dork.'
By the time Riley came back, Maya was already in her pajamas and in bed.
Riley smiled, then went over to the bed and climbed in next to her.
Maya smiled back.. "There. We can snuggle if you're still cold."
Riley immediately got closer and snuggled into Maya's neck, sighing softly.
Maya laughed a little and softly kissed the top of her head. "Did you enjoy today's adventures, Riles?"
Riley nodded. "I loved everything... except for when I hurt you..."
Maya sighed. "Don't beat yourself up about that, it wasn't your fault."
Riley moved back from Maya's neck and looked her in the eyes. "I love you, I always will. And because I love you, I'm going to be protective of you, even if it's me I'm protecting you from."
Maya looked back at her intently, almost feeling bad for wanting her to forget about what happened. Maya eventually bumped her forehead against Riley's and whispered, "I know you love me, I love you too. But you don't need to protect me from yourself, I trust you."
Riley continued to hold their gaze, not wanting to look away as she feared she would cry. Maya looked down as they lost eye contact. Riley nuzzled her cheek and whispered, "I only do that 'cause I love you."
"And I'm only saying this because I love you: I'm okay. Nothing really bad happened and you need to stop worrying so much. It's okay, really."
Riley didn't say anything else, she just raised her head a little to kiss Maya's bruise once again. At least, she tried to.
Maya ended up moving away the last second. "Stop it! It's not your fault so don't be like this!" she barked with a fierce undertow.
Riley looked at her, her eyes watering. "I'm think it's for the best if I just leave...," she mumbled under her breath. She then got up and left, leaving Maya feeling like a terrible friend.
