Dear Readers,
Hey I know it's been a while since I updated, but I've been really busy. I decided to finish the epilogue in a few small parts in order to get it done faster and not leave you hanging. So here's the first part!
SDSL
Caleb
Sarah was in wedding overdrive, since the wedding was only two days away. Alice and Reid were arriving today, and everyone else was already in (or already back) Ipswich. They would be the last to arrive. I always thought Kate would be the one going crazy over the details of any one of our weddings, but she had been distracted lately. I would've thought Alice would be going crazy over our wedding before I ever thought Sarah would, but Alice wasn't here yet to obsess over the details. So for some reason, that translated into Sarah going full-on wedding crazy. She wasn't a bridezilla, but to say she was stressed would be an understatement.
She, Kate, Kate's sister Jessica, and Amy were in the middle of the the Danvers Estate back yard, where we would be saying our vows in just two short days, trying to get everything to look just right.
Pogue and I sat a ways away trying to avoid being caught up in the whirlwind as people were already setting up for the wedding. Tyler had already been wrangled into driving to get more flowers when the ones that had come were apparently the wrong color.
Just as Kate was calling Pogue and I over to try and rope us into doing something, my phone started buzzing. I looked down and for the first time in my entire life, I thanked the lord that Reid was calling me. "Sorry, Kate, Reid's calling! I gotta make sure he and Alice are on their way. But Pogue would be happy to help."
Pogue shot me a death glare. "I hate you." He said as he dragged his feet toward the gaggle of insane girls.
I chuckled, picking up the phone, saying, "Hey Reid, you have no idea how happy I am to hear you."
I heard Reid chuckle on the other end, "Well that's the first time I've ever heard you say that. Are the girls that bad?"
I sighed, looked over as they were ordering Pogue, who shot another death glare my way, around. "You have no idea, man. You should be here to witness it soon enough though." I paused for a second when he said nothing, saying, "You guys are on your way, right? Sarah might have a meltdown if Alice isn't here soon."
"We're on our way. Alice is actually sleeping right now. She didn't really get any sleep last night... that's why I'm calling you." His voice was tense and I could tell that he wasn't just calling me to let me know that they were on their way.
"Well are you sure she's out? She's a very good fake sleeper." I told her, knowing that Reid would only call to tell me something while Alice was out if it was serious and something he didn't want her to know he was talking to me about.
"I'm sure." He hesitated before going on, as if trying to decide how to say what he was trying to tell me. Finally, he let out a long breath, and said, "Caleb, man, we got problems. Like big problems."
"What do you mean?" I asked, tensing up. He didn't respond at first, so I added, "Reid, you need to tell me. If something is going on with Alice, I need to know."
"I know, dude, that's why I called you. It's just hard to explain, but... long story short, are you sure there are no limitations to Alice's power." I stood there, shocked silent for a moment, not sure how to respond. Whatever I had been expecting, this was not it. "Caleb?"
"I don't know, Reid. That's what the book said." I told him.
"But doesn't the book also say that all power comes with a price?" I was quiet for a moment. I don't know when Reid became so serious about all this, but he was right. The book did say that. "Maybe the prophecy meant that she wouldn't have our physical limitations, but there could be other ways in which she would pay for it if she was excessively using, right?"
Reid's musings worried me. Mostly because they were very un-Reid-like. But when it came to Alice, he was not as much of a punk. Plus, I hated to admit it, but he was out-growing his trouble-making days. "Reid, slow down. What is all this about? Are you trying to tell me that Alice is becoming a power junkie?"
"All I'm saying, Caleb, is that something is wrong with Alice. And it absolutely has something to do with her powers." Before I could respond, Reid said, "I gotta go, Caleb. She's waking up. We'll be in Ipswich soon, ok?" Then he hung up.
I shut my phone, gritting my teeth, taking a deep breath as I rubbed the bridge of my nose. I knew it had been too quiet lately. As much as I didn't want to admit it, Alice had seemed off the last few times we had talked on the phone. I needed to do some research before they got here. I went over to Pogue and rescued him from the girls, telling them I needed him to run some errands. Sarah pouted but said ok, and let us leave.
"What's going on, man?" Pogue asked as we walked into Gorman's old house. "Why are we here?" I hadn't explained to him yet, and it seemed odd to him that we would be coming here, now, of all times.
"I just need to check something out." I said as we went to get the book.
"About?"
"Alice's power." I told him as I started skimming through it's pages.
"And?"
"The price she has to pay for using it. I don't like to admit it, but Reid's right. All power comes with a price." I told him.
"I don't know what's going on, but I have this weird feeling." Pogue told me. I shot him a questioning look. "For some reason, I don't think we are gonna like what we find." I grimaced, hoping he was wrong. But for some reason, I knew he wasn't.
Reid and Alice showed up long after we had returned to the Danvers Estate. The girls were still crazily pouring over the wedding details when they got here, but all that they could get done today had already been finished.
When they pulled up, the girls forgot their wedding obsession and bomb-rushed her. She smiled, hugging them all, but I could tell Reid was right- something was off with her. She hugged me and then the girls rushed her into the house to catch up and go crazy of more wedding stuff.
Reid got out of the car, carrying two suitcases. He looked as grim as I felt after reading the book. We all greeted one another but waited until the girls were inside before we said anything else.
"Did you look in the book?" Reid asked. I nodded. "And?"
"And you were not wrong. All power comes with a price. Even hers." I told him, not wanting to believe it, but knowing it was true.
Tyler had been clued in enough, but he didn't know what the price was. The only person who knew right now was Pogue, who would not look at me at the moment. "What's her price, Caleb?" Tyler finally asked the question that Reid seemed too scared to do himself.
I let out a heavy breath, before I said, "Her sanity."
Tyler and Reid looked at me like I had no sanity myself. "I'm sorry, come again? I could've sworn you just said-"
"You heard me right Reid. It's going to mentally chip away at her if she uses as much as you think she has been."
"I don't think, I know, Caleb. That's the part that scares me."
