Sarah

I woke, reaching a hand out to the space beside me to touch my fiance, when all I touched was empty space. I shot up in bed, suddenly when I realized what today was. Today was my wedding day. Today I was going to get married.

I found myself surrounded by my best friends, Alice, Kate, Amy, and Jessica (who may have been Kate's younger sister, but she had still become something like a sister to me, and to all of us for that matter). They helped me get dressed, all of them in simple, elegant, wine-colored bridesmaid dresses. They were spaghetti strap and tied in the back. They all had their hair curled and down.

I wore my dress, which was all lace and a ton of beadwork, that was simple in design. It was a strapless, sweetheart neckline, and it went straight down with no ruffles or anything like that. It had a small train as well. Simple but beautiful, and I loved it. I had a simple veil as well, my hair up in a bun with little crystals that had been worked into my hair.

"Sarah you look so beautiful." Alice sighed. I smiled back at her, not trusting myself to speak, because I knew the first words out of my mouth wouldn't be "thank you," they would be "what's going on with you, Alice?" She looked so pale. The boys had tried to pretend nothing was wrong, but I wasn't stupid; something was up, and Alice was at the center of it. I tried to tell Caleb we could wait if something was wrong, but he wouldn't have it. I knew Alice wouldn't either.

As I walked down the aisle, Kate holding the train of my dress, all I saw was Caleb. Him smiling at me at the end of that aisle. It was like no one else was there but he and I as I came to stand beside him.

"... do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

"I do."

"And do you, Caleb Danvers, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do."

We smiled at each other until we heard the minister say, "You may now kiss the bride." And kiss me he did. We were married. He was my husband and everything was perfect. Or at least, that's what I thought.

Caleb and I were headed off to the airport to go on our honeymoon, and hadn't stopped kissing since the limo driver had started driving.

But his phone rang, and normally, Caleb didn't answer it. He wouldn't have. But he set a certain ring for Alice, Reid, Pogue, and Tyler in case of an emergency. I could tell by the ring that it was one of them.

He pulled away from me with a groan, and looked at the caller ID, before saying, "It's Tyler. I gotta answer just to check, but then will be on our way." I nodded, only semi-disappointed at the interruption. Caleb and I were married now. We would have our whole lives to be together.

"Hey, Ty, this better be important or I swear I'm gonna-" Caleb was grinning when he began speaking, but stopped when Tyler interrupted and started speaking fast. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but whatever it was made the smile slid right off Caleb's face. "What do you mean you're at the hospital? Why?" Tyler spoke and as he did, I could see Caleb losing color in his face. "WHAT?" He shouted angrily, causing me to jump. "How did this happen?" Something was wrong, of that much I was sure.

"What's going on?" I asked in a hushed voice, but he held up a hand telling me to hold on. Tyler was still speaking.

"Tyler, why are you the one calling me?" Caleb said finally, still angry and upset and terrified. "Shouldn't you be helping Reid? Shouldn't Pogue be-" Tyler cut him off again, and from what I could tell, things were only getting worse. "How does someone just disappear?" Tyler spoke briefly, and then Caleb let out a breath. "We are coming back, don't panic baby boy. I'll see you soon." Tyler said a few words, but Caleb just shook his head and replied, "Doesn't matter. We'll take a honeymoon later. Some things are more important." He said, and then hung up. I was really worried now; Caleb hadn't called Tyler baby boy in years. He put the divider down and told the limo driver to take us to the hospital, before putting the divider back up between us and the limo driver.

"What's going on?" I asked after he hadn't spoken for a few minutes.

He let out a breath, and then said, "I haven't been entirely truthful about everything, and for that I'm sorry."

I was alarmed as soon as the words left his mouth. "About what?"

"Alice." He answered. "Reid told me she had been using a lot and it was making her act weird. Pogue and I went off the other day to look in the Book of Damnation about it, not to run wedding errands."

"And?" I asked when he didn't continue.

He let out another long breath, and said, "And her power does come with a price."

"But she doesn't look older..." I started to say, but Caleb shook his head.

"No not like that. For some reason, hers is different than ours. Our power takes a toll on our bodies. We are not the same gender, and apparently, that means our powers affect us differently. But we were fools to think she wouldn't pay because all power comes with a price."

"What does that mean?" I asked fearfully.

"It means that Alice's power doesn't wear away at her body when she uses. It wears away at her mind." He told me gravely. "Reid was worried, and he was right to be. Alice tried to commit suicide." I clapped my hand over my mouth in shock. "That's not all." He said finally. "So we are gonna have to postpone our honeymoon... I'm sorry baby but it's Alice."

"Of course we are post-poning you idiot! Alice is my sister now too. and I love her."

When we got to the hospital. Reid was a mess. Amy was there, Tyler was there, Pogue was there, and even Jessica was there. But Kate was nowhere to be found. Apparently she just peaced out and told no one where or why she was going except Jessica, and Jessica was being very tight-lipped. Who knew if she even knew the real story? All I knew was that Kate had left without saying goodbye, Alice had tried to kill herself by slitting her wrists, and things were getting a lot more complicated than they had seemed.
