Chapter Seventeen - No Trespassing
A few weeks had passed and everything was quiet. At that point, nothing had been done to follow through with the plan that Shawn had so brilliantly cooked up so I had no idea if it was still a go or not. Strangely enough, I wasn't sure how to feel about it possibly not being a go. The idea of getting Harley Kiener back made the pit in my stomach hot with happiness but the other idea of hurting someone, even if he did deserve it a thousand times over, bothered me something fierce. I was always on the fence about things like that. And it hurt my head because my thoughts liked to pile up on each other and play Jenga due to it.
It was 9:37 pm at night. So it was too late to do anything yet to early to go to bed. I was laying belly first on my bed, flipping aimlessly through another Danielle Steele novel of which I had scoffed from my aunt. I wasn't sure if it was because I was the typical 16 year old who was the hopeless romantic or if it was because I actually enjoyed her books. It was probably both. But hey, what can you do? The sound of something scratching against my window however, quickly caught my attention and snapped my eyes away from the words that flowed so perfectly together. It took a minute or so for my eyes to adjust to the darkness that had blanketed the sky and caressed the glass that sat inside the white frame that was my window. I wasn't exactly sure what I was looking for, maybe a stray branch that was attempting to take refuge in any place it could, but I knew what I didn't want it to be. I really did spend to much of my time in gorging myself in any cheesy horror flicks I could get my hands on. And it was because of them that I feared pretty much everything. Though of course, wild horses would have had to drag that confession from me.
When I saw and heard nothing more, my attention returned to the book I was reading. I was really looking forward to seeing who Elizabeth was going to choose. I read three sentences before the noise came again, except louder. It sounded as if someone was dragging nails that you hammer into boards across the glass. There was no way it was a branch. Catiously, I placed my book pages down and made my way to the window. Which, really, was a dumb move considering if it was some physco killer who wanted my liver for breakfast, I was pretty well serving it up no problem. And it didn't help that I was only in a knee high night gown and undergarments; what wear to die in, right?
I stood in front of it but didn't dare open it. I was blonde and had my stupid moments, like that one right then, but I wasn't completely brainless. I peered out and the first thing my eyes focused on was the ground below and the large lilac tree that stood proudly in the front yard. The street light was on, so the road and side walk were dimly lit. I didnt see anything even remotely threatening. That was, until a face appeared. I let out a blood curdling scream and fell backwards. My rear
instantly burning in pain from the hard contact of my bedroom carpet. I scurried backwards in a panic, ready to scream for my aunt when I realized that the face staring back at me belonged to
Jason, who immediately started laughing like a maniac. I gasped and glared at him hard enough that I'm sure it burned a little bit. I was going to hurt that boy so bad, his great grandchildren would know it.
My bedroom door flew open and he disappeared out of sight. Standing above me in the door frame, panting and holding a metal baseball bat with a vice grip was my aunt. She was wearing a night gown as well, except hers was covered in a ugly floral pattern and her worn out bunny slippers didn't exactly add to the scentsy mess either, but hey, it was her house, she was allowed to dress however she wanted. "What..is going on?" She huffed out. Her normally beautiful curly locks were messier than usual and underneath her eyes were dark, baggy, circles. Obviously I had woken her up. Stupid Jason. It was all his fault. I suddenly felt bad. Both times she came hurdling into my room like a mad woman in protective mode, it was due to a boy scaring me nearly lifeless.
"Nothing Aunt Julie. I thought I saw something outside. A branch spooked me and I tripped over something on the floor. I'm really sorry." I lied, pushing myself up to my feet pathetically.
My aunt gave me a look that made me cringe slightly in fear and feel even worse. "The next time I come running in here ready to kill someone, I suggest you duck." She said sarcastically. "Goodnight. Go to bed soon." And then, just as fast as she was inside of my room, she was gone.
I ran a hand nervously through my hair and then let out a sigh. She really was an amazing woman. And I mean, really, I didn't ask Jason, or Shawn for that matter, to cause the mini heart attacks, so really, it was their fault. I was completely not to blame. Yep. That's how I was going to keep that. I turned back to the window and jumped when Jason appeared into sight again. He, of course, began chuckling again. I glared at him again and made my way over, silently pulling it open. Jason quietly pulled himself half way in and gave me a heart stopping smirk. "Wanna fool around?"
"Wanna know what it feels like to fall 20 feet from a bedroom window?" I retorted with a returning smirk. I moved over and let him all the way in. He adjusted his clothes and looked around. I felt my cheeks instantly bruise from the embarrassment of what he was witnessing. It was definitely not in a condition I wanted anyone to see, especially not my boyfriend. That was still so weird to say after everything that happened.
"Nice set up." He joked, his infamous smirk still plastered on his face like a kind of glue that was impossible to rinse off. I knew he enjoyed the satisfaction of scaring and embarrassing me and being able to get a way with it.
I playfully punched him in the arm and laughed when he dramatically pretended that it hurt. "Shut it. What are you doing here?" I wondered, catiously watching beneath the door for my aunt's shadow.
"Hoping to make you sneak out?" A cute look spread across his face, erasing the other like light speed. Damn him. "I found this really cool place and I know you'll like it."
I rolled my eyes. "What is it with you little trouble makers? Are you trying to get me shipped back to Pittsburgh?" I teased.
"Hey, hey. The difference is, I'm not Shawn. And where we're going isn't completely illegal. So we should be fine." He responded.
I let out a chuckle. "Not completely illegal? So it is only a little bit?"
Jason smirked once more. "Just come on. Live a little, will ya?" And at that, without another word, he slipped back out through my window and waited for me, his back turned like the gentleman we both knew he wasn't. I looked towards my door and frowned. My aunt was still awake, due to him being a butt weed, so my major concern was what if she had decided to come back in to check on me and realized I wasn't there? Jason was right though. You do only live once and I was sure ten years down the road it wouldn't be a big deal, but after the whole incident with Shawn, it definitely made me nervous. The last place I wanted to be shipped off to was back to the horrid place I finally freed myself from. I let out a sigh and then quickly moved away from the window in attempts to get dressed as fast as I could. I grabbed the closest outfit I could find, threw it on and then joined Jason not long after. My outfit consisted of black jogging pants and a lose fitting t-shirt that looked like a football jersey. It was red, the arms had two golden stripes on it and the front had the number 75 enlarged in gold on it as well. I also had thrown on mismatched socks and a random pair of sneakers that were shoved half way under my bed. I quietly closed the window behind me and then grinned to myself as Jason continued to stand with his back to me, obviously unaware that I had finished and was right behind him. I glanced down at the pavement below and then catiously got close enough to grab his arms. Jolting him forward, I quickly pulled him back so that he nearly met the roof with his butt.
"Saved your life!" I whispered, which quickly followed with an hysterical giggle when his reaction was quick to follow.
Letting out a gasp and a half scream, his arms flung all over but he caught himself just in time. His beautiful brown eyes were widened with panic and his skin grew hot from the fear I had set into him. It was the funniest thing I had seen in a long time. "That... was NOT funny! I could've fallen and split my face open! Do you want to date someone with half a face?!" He harshly whispered.
I couldn't help myself and I definitely couldn't stop laughing. We weren't high up enough that we would have been killed from the fall, but he was right. We were definitely high enough to do some damage to said body parts. "Now we're even." I then swiftly moved passed him, grabbed onto the side of the downspout and then skillfully let myself slide down. He wasn't far behind and when he landed beside me, he gave me a glare and I couldnt help but giggle once more. "Wherever you're taking me, it so better be worth it."
"It will be." Jason looked around and then took off down the street like a bullet. "Try and keep up if you can!"
I looked back towards the house and when I was sure the coast was clear, I darted after him, my feet harshly stabbing the ground with every stride I took. He was a lot faster than I gave him credit for but I eventually caught up. Probably because he felt bad due to me panting like I was a smoker with an 80 year old's heart. We didn't stop running though, it was just at a slower pace.
"Why... are we... running?" I breathed out.
Jason shrugged. "Exercise is good for you, Sarah. Builds characters."
"Yeah, character of a teenager who develops asthma." I retorted.
We ran for another fifteen minutes before we stopped at the opening of what looked like a never ending patch of trees. I bent over and put my hands on my knees, practically gasping for air. I was so not in shape for that. Jason played basketball every Thursday and then whenever for fun, he was used to running around. I was not. Books and burgers were my thing. It was a wonder that I wasn't obese considering those two things were my guilty pleasure. I gave him a skeptical look before letting out a chuckle. "You really have a thing for trees, don'tcha?"
Confused, Jason frowned at me. "What do you mean?"
I shook my head with another chuckle. "Nothing."
He shrugged and then without another word, lead the way once more. It seemed like we walked for hours but in reality, it was only a few minutes. We passed a house that was completely darkened, with multiple cars and trucks sitting in the drive way; which was weird considering most people, unless you were the witch from Hanzel and Gretel, wouldn't live in the middle of the woods. Or forest. Whatever you want to call it. It was kind of creepy but I quickly wrote it off when we eventually came to a stop. In front of us was a large wired fence with a large sign that boldly stated No Trespassing. And not too far off of it was another sign that warned people of the dangerous amount of voltage it possessed. It was actually two separate fences that were locked together by a rusty chain and lock that not even the Hulk himself could bust open. Nothing of which appealed to me or made me want to touch it any time soon. I prefered not being a human piece of toast, thank you very much.
Jason nodded his head towards the top. "Come on." He stuck his foot in the bottom and then began to easily ascend it. He was crazy, I swear. I shook my head and took a step back.
"Nuh uh, you want to be some sort of roast, that's you're choice. There is no way in hell I am touching that thing."
Jason quickly reached the top, looked down at me and then swung his leg over the top, dangling between the side I was on and the side he was about to be on. "There hasn't been power to this thing in years. Do you see anybody around hear to touch any sort of switch? If it was on, I wouldn't be able to touch it at all. I didnt realize you were that much of a chicken." He chuckled. Jason then got his leg over the other side and then just as if he could fly, jumped off and landed in a crouched position. He almost reminded me of Spiderman. Almost. He did have a point though. However, it still didn't ease the constant voice in the back of my head and the constant twinge of fear that pricked at my heart strings. I let out a sigh. I knew there was no point in even trying to argue with him. I was in the middle of nowhere and prefered not being left behind, so really, was there any other choice? All I needed then was butter. At least then I wouldn't have been a plain human piece of toast.
I shakily stuck my foot through the bottom loop hole of wires and then began my journey upwards, my eyes darting every which way to ensure no one was around. It took me a minute or so, but I reached the top a lot faster than I would have ever gave myself credit for. Obviously thanks to my fear. Easily, I swung my foot over and connected it with the other side. Maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought or attempted to make it out to be. "Why.. I let.. you stupid boys.. talk me into.. stuff like this... I'll never.. know!" I grunted, struggling to pull my other foot over. And just like that, I did, but not before having the back of my jogging pants snag on a lose piece of wire. I attempted to pull myself free but it was no use. The fabric was snagged tightly and if I tried to reach around to loosen it, I knew I would have lost the rest of my balance as well. It took me a few more times but I finally did get myself free. With a rip and a thud to follow.
Sprawled out with my head to the side, I groaned. A mouthful of dirt was not something that was tasty or enjoyable. After Jason realized I was okay, I swear there was not an off switch for the laughter that endlessly came out of his small stature. I pushed myself slowly up to my hands and knees and glared up at him. "I'm so glad this is amusing for you. Help me up, you jerk."
And he did, but not without laughing even harder. "I didn't know there was a full moon tonight, Sarah."
Frowning, I looked up towards the sky. What could he have possibly meant by that? It then dawned on me. I regretfully looked down at the back of my pants. Sure enough, there was a large rip that ran straight down the middle of them and my underwear was out for the world to see. I wanted to cry and I knew my face was redder than a cherry. Thank God it was dark out. "Shut up! Give me your sweater."
Jason shook his head and attempted to suppress his laughter but failed miserably. He took it off and then handed it to me. In a quick reaction, I snatched it and tied in around my waist while looking around. "If you ever tell anyone, I swear you'll regret it." I growled out, pointing my finger at him.
He held his hands up as if he were being robbed and smirked. "Scouts honor."
"You're doing it wrong dumbass. Let's just go before I become something worse than a human piece of toast by the hands of my aunt."
"No way. We've come this far. There's no point in turning back now."
Jason was on his way once more and with an eye roll, I quickly followed. This time, we barely walked before reaching what I was guessiny was his destination. We stopped at a clearing, where a large stone wall ran endlessly to where I couldn't see it anymore and a large windmill sat not too far away, sad and lonely. At our feet, there were chunks of old broken up cobblestone and I assumed it used to be a path that lead somewhere much greater. There were more No Trespassing signs along with a "Danger. No swimming." sign. On the other side of the stone wall, was water that raged on like it had something to be angry about. I wasn't sure where he had brought me, but besides the creepy feel to it, I wasn't really complaining.
"What was this place?"
Jason walked over to the wall, climbed up a few feet and sat on the edge of it like it was no big deal. I hesitated to join him, but of course, eventually did. I placed my foot in a few spots that had chunks missing from it and carefully did so. I sat beside him and catiously looked down below. It was at least a ten foot drop and the water looked rough and unwelcoming. The sound of it surprisingly was somewhat calming however. It was a strange sensation.
"Believe it or not, there used to be an oil factory here. But just like everything else, it went under and they had to shut it down." He finally spoke, looking around.
"So, what happened to it?" I asked.
"They tore it down years ago. Put up signs everywhere to try and keep people away. I think someone got hurt on the job and tried to sue or something like that. And they just didn't care enough to do anything about it. Just seemed easier to tear it down, I guess."
How Jason knew those things was beyond me. Which was kind of funnily ironic, really. If he put half of his brains into his studies the way that he did when it came to facts like the ones he was telling me, I was positive he would manage more than an average C on his studies. There was no point in telling him that though. Jason was just as, if not more, thick headed then I was so it would have been like lecturing a brick wall. I looked up towards the sky and I could feel a smile creep into my lips. It was blanketed with stars and the moon seemed brighter and bigger than normal. It really was gorgeous when things like city lights and smog from cars and Lord knew what else weren't covering it. It was no wonder Jason took me to places like that one. "How did you even find this place?" I suddenly wondered.
"I told you, I'm a wanderer. You'd be surprised the things you find when your time seems endless."
I nodded slowly. He was right. When I was bored and alone, time always seemed to drag on and I definitely did things more productively. So I wasn't sure why I thought everyone else was different in that sense. It fell silent between us and I couldnt help but keep my eyes directed at the sky. Maybe it was because it really was beautiful, or maybe it was because I was nervous about making eye contact with Jason, after such a long silence. I didnt know. He cleared his throat and I nervously looked at him, biting my lip a little.
"Sarah, would you be mad if I kissed you... again?"
Well, hey there gigantic mutated butterflies, so lovely to feel you destroy my stomach yet again. I bit my lip harder and shook my head no slowly. He catiously moved closer to me, gently snaked his arm around my waist and pulled me close. For all it was abandoned and smelled kind of stale, it was even more romantic then our first date. That boy really know how to pull at my heart strings. I lightly put my hand on his chest and our faces grew closer. Another thing I enjoyed about him was, he really did always smell good. It was like heaven in my nose every time I caught a whiff of him. The heat from his skin made my heart do a flutter and the second his moist lips connected onto mine, my eyes instinctively shut. We held the kiss for a second before it started to get a little more intense. He was quick to kiss me hungrily, and pull me closer and I wasn't quick to stop him. He felt good against me; the way that he moved, the way his lips moved against mine. Just the way that he made my skin tingle by barely touching me was enough to send me into overdrive. I was worried it was going to turn into a lot more than I was ready for. His tongue hit my bottom lip, asking for entry but I pulled away before it did go any further. I wiped my lip with the back of my hand and let out a small chuckle.
Though it was dark, I could tell Jason was blushing and I couldnt help but chuckle again when he looked away shyly. "I'm sorry. I-I'm not normally like that."
"It's not that." I said truthfully.
He looked back at me. "What is it then?"
"Would you be mad if I pretended to be interested in Harley just to get back at him for embarrassing me?"
His dark eyebrows knitted together. "Uh, a little. Considering, you know, you're my girlfriend. Might bother me a bit."
I rolled my eyes with a grin. "You missed when I said pretended to be interested. Hes hurt a lot of people, Jason. He deserves a taste of his own medicine for once. And Shawn and I have the perfect plan to serve it to him. I just need you to be okay with it." I explained.
Considering he was one of the first people to laugh at me during my... sticky situation, I felt he had no right to deny me my revenge and if he tried, I had every intention on calling him out for it. The was silent again and after a few minutes, he irritatedly ran a hand through his jet Black hair. Letting out a sigh, he looked at me once more. "As long as you promise me you won't kiss him, he doesn't touch you and afterwards you make it very it was a prank and you're still my girl, fine. I guess I can live with it." He said. He then shot me his infamous tummy twisting smirk. "And if anyone asks, I broke up with you that day."
I giggled. "Deal."
I then kisses him again, smiling like a fool. It was great to have someone who understood why I wanted to do the things I did, even if they weren't crazy about it themselves. That was part of the reason I was so into Jason, I think. He may have been a big butt head and jumped to conclusions regarding anything, really, and his humor was a little crude sometimes and his eyes were hardly always on me, but he got me. And I got him. It could have very well been the reason we clicked the way we did, I never really sat down and thought about it. What I did think about however, was how awful I felt.
Jason and I were quick to go right back to how we were before I broke the kiss, this time me no longer denying his advances, and although things were about to go way further than I ever planned, the only person I could think about was Shawn.
What was wrong with me?
