Chapter Thirteen
College Woes
When one starts college there is an illusion you have about how its supposed to go and its so blatantly wrong. There isn't much that makes sense, only the information you're supposed to be learning. But how its presented can be incorrect or just nonsensical and make you want to throttle people. Really wasn't helping my natural aggressive tendencies.
I managed to get through most of college without killing anyone, which was pretty much a goddamn miracle and if everyone lived by the time I graduated it should be recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. So far there weren't any fatalities but I wasn't getting my hopes up.
To say I hated college was a lie. I liked the thought and the idea of it. It was great. But in actual application it was shit. Mostly because of the people I had to go with, they basically ruined everything. The students were pretty much retarded and the professors were so jaded that they made the experience for people that might actually like college, hell.
That was where I ended up.
I still lived with my dad, because I was still a minor, technically, but I ended up spending most of my time at Seth's house. I needed to most of the time. It was quiet, nothing could distract me and if I wasn't surrounded by his smell and him when he could be there I would lose my mind.
I was always angry at something because of the idiot teachers and students I had to work with. Poor Seth was left to deal with me. Claire did so much better at college than I did. She had a positive outlook and always tried to see the best in people and I was too busy watching every mistake people make and lose my mind with each one.
But then again we were in different programs. I was in the engineering program and she was in the education program. Her people were supposed to be sweet and smart. Mine were supposed to have the social capability of a rabid bear.
I was one of the only three girls in the program and that made my life hellish. I had Seth show up a few times to let them know I had a boyfriend that was three times larger than them and a million times better looking. And he still liked Star Wars. Being out in the regular world made me realize how lucky I really was to have him. The man was the sweetest person I had ever met and for some reason he loved me with his entire being and beyond that.
"Do you want fries with the steak?" I heard Seth ask from the backyard where he was grilling.
I was struggling over homework at his house because I was distracted everywhere else so he took to learning how to cook while I was busy with homework and school. "Don't ask stupid questions Seth!" I called back to him.
I heard him laugh and continue preparing our food.
The back door was open and I could smell the steaks grilling and I couldn't concentrate on whatever stupid new theory or idea they wanted me to understand so I left the table and went over to the back door. I leaned against the door jam and watched Seth flip steaks without a shirt on in the cold of the day. It was always nice seeing him do anything without a shirt on.
"So, rare or at least medium-rare?" He asked me with some level of hope.
I normally liked my steaks still bleeding but Seth was slowly becoming a meat snob and it just wasn't acceptable. "You can but some char on it." I said through pursed lips.
"Finally coming to your senses, I see." He said triumphantly.
"Shut up and cook, woman." I muttered to him as I turned and left the doorway.
I went to the kitchen and got plates and other needs for dinner and set the table around my textbooks, it was our usual routine when he didn't have to run patrols. It was normal and natural and it made us look so old. I was still a teenager and I spent my nights cooking dinner and doing homework. I accepted my lot in life easily.
Seth brought the steak in and gave me the two pieces I wanted and had six for himself and we sat together. "What is all this stuff?" Seth muttered through a mouthful of steak and fries.
"Ridiculous nonsense." I muttered as I started drowning my fries in ketchup.
"You'll figure it out, you're the smartest person I know." He said proudly as he didn't even bother to cut his next steak.
"Its not saying much." I pointed out as I waived a fry at him.
He laughed again, almost spewing chunks at me. He was lucky I loved him cause sometimes he was disgusting.
We finished eating and I went back to working on the stupid problems they were giving me to solve and Seth cleaned up. I was of course struggling with some equation that wasn't turning out properly because calculus was created by the devil. So of course I threw something, as most people would retaliate against calculus.
Seth appeared next to me and took hold of my hands. "Let's get you away from that before you commit murder." He said as he pulled me up and over to the couch.
He basically pinned me in the corner and turned the TV on. But I was still upset.
"What's wrong?" He asked as he held me close.
I huffed. "Everything was so easy when I was a kid and now this is really hard and I don't know what I'm doing." I admitted to him, he would be the only one to hear that. Ever.
"It's gonna be okay, it's just gonna take time. The good stuff is never easy." He said knowingly.
"You are being very philosophical right now." I said with a huff, he was just too good at calming me down.
"Is it working?" He asked, whispering in my ear.
"Kinda." I shrugged, trying not to give in so easily.
He smiled broadly as he kissed my cheek. "Doesn't matter what happens with all this, I'm always here and if need be we can just be hippies and live off the land. We don't need no fancy jobs or schoolin." He said dramatically with an unnecessary twang in his voice.
"That is the scariest thing you've ever said to me." I told him as I shuddered a bit.
"Did it help?" He asked with a bright smile.
"Yes," I said quickly.
"Then it doesn't matter." He said simply.
I sighed and put my arms around his neck. "I love you." I told him quietly, didn't need the animals to hear it.
He smiled and kissed my nose. "I love you too." He said easily as he released his grip on me.
I was free to return to my homework calm and content now that I had my werewolf calm me down. Because that was his job and he was damn good at it, I was free to take over the world with whatever tools they foolishly gave me.
