Chapter 23: Staying Human.

"Love is just a difficult thing to life through because it can destroy you completely."

"Why did you want to talk to Silas alone?" Stefan asked as we drove back to the boarding house.

"He lost someone that he loved dearly and I relate." Lexi said.

"You couldn't say what you need to in front of me?"

"No, Stefan I couldn't. "

"Why not?"

"You don't understand." Lexi said simply.

"You to forget that I was just as madly in love with Katherine when I thought she was locked in that tom." Stefan said stopping the car.

"I know you want to help, Stefan but this is something I have to work through by myself." Lexi said as they walked into the house.

"As long as you know that you are not alone." Stefan said.

"I know that I am not and I'm grateful." Lexi said throwing herself down onto one of the couches.

"There you guys are we were wondering where you went?" Damon said as he walked into the room.

"We just went for a ride." Stefan said.

"Okay you know what why don't I give you guys sometime alone to sort out your issues with each other." Lexi said standing up and walking out of the room without looking back.

"She seems distracted." Damon said walking over to the fire place.

"She has a lot on her mind right now." Stefan said.

"Look Stefan I don't like the way things have been between us lately."

"Neither do I, Damon I was angry and hurt by you and Elena but you seem to make her happy so I'm happy for you two." \

"Thank you brother." Damon said handing a drink to Stefan the toasted to brotherhood.

"Are you spying?" Charles said sitting down next to Lexi, who was sitting on the stairs watch the brothers make up.

"I am just making sure that they forgive and forget and don't try and rip each other's throats out." Lexi said turning to Charles.

"Are you the new peace keeper in this house?" Charles asked.

"I just know that even for us life is still too short to waste on hate."

"It's nice of you; trying to fix their relationship."

"Well I've learnt that fighting over a girl just a waste of time." Lexi said.

"That is true." Charles said.

"You think we'll be okay? Get over loosing someone we loved so much?" Lexi asked turning to Charles.

"I think we have to; for the ones we lost would be disappointed if we lived in the past forever." Charles said after a while.

"It's easier said than done though."

"I know it most defiantly is but we have to try for the ones we love." Charles said.

"I could use a drink feel like joining me?" Lexi said standing up and putting on her jacket.

"Sounds good to me." Charles said doing the same and opening the front door for Lexi.

"You know I understand why Lee loved you." Charles said as he and Lexi were sitting at the bar.

"Must be because of my winning personality." Lexi joked before taking a sip of her drink.

"Well yes but because of your heart." Charles said.

"My heart?" Lex asked confused.

"Yes, you have a big heart even if it's broken; I can see it."

"Thank you Charles, I suppose it's one of the only things that keep me from either going crazy or doing something stupid."

"How so?" Charles asked.

"If you've been around for as long as I have you learn to hold onto things that keep you human." Lexi explained.

"That is true." Charles said as they toasted to staying human.

"So are you going to explain to me what's going on with you and those two brothers?" Charles asked as he and Lexi moved into one of the booths.

"I don't know…. I know that sounds silly but I really don't know… I started this thing with Kol because I was hoping that one of them might know what happened to Lea but so far I haven't gotten anything except confused." Lexi said sounding exhausted.

"Klaus seems to have made his interest in you clear." Charles said after taking a sip of his drink.

"I know and I don't know what to do about it."

"Do you care about them?" Charles asked.

"I'm not heartless but I am grieving so getting involved with either of them is a mistake but I am with Kol and not Klaus."

"So what are you going to do?"

"I am going to talk to them." Lexi said standing up.

"You're going now?" Charles asked.

"Yes I am; but don't worry I'm not going to leave you here by yourself." Lexi said just as she spotted the person walking in.

"Hey guys." Caroline said walking up to them.

"Hey Car; you remember Charles right?" Lexi said as Charles got up.

"Yes I do... nice to see you again Charles." Caroline said.

"It's a pleasure to be seeing you again as well, Caroline." Charles said bowing.

"You don't need to do that." Caroline said sliding into the booth.

"It's how he was raised." Lexi said as Charles sat down.

"You're not going to be joining us?" Caroline asked.

"No I'm not I have something to go take care of so you two have fun." Lexi said before leaving the two.

"I think this is her attempt to set us up together." Charles said.

"I think so but I'm not really sure why." Caroline said just as the waitress came to take there order.
