Chapter 31
On Sunday morning, Sebastian was the first to wake. He blinked open his eyes and let out an irritated groan as he realised Jesse had wrapped himself around him at some point during the night. Not caring whether he woke his friend or not, Sebastian fought his way out of Jesse's hold and scrambled out of the bed.
"Too early," Jesse grumbled at Sebastian before snuggling back under the covers.
Slipping out of the spare room, Sebastian padded down to the bathroom to use the toilet, not bothering to put the toilet seat back down once he had done his business. He washed his hands, splashed cold water over his face and cleaned his teeth. Still in his pyjamas, he headed downstairs and made his way out into the backyard. He sat down on a garden bench, closing his eyes as he felt the morning air flit around him.
Eventually, somebody joined him, handing over a steaming mug of coffee.
"Thanks," Sebastian said taking the cup in his hands and inhaling the aroma of the hot beverage. He blew over the rim of the cup before taking a small sip. Looking up, he expected to see Kurt, Blaine or maybe even Carole. He wasn't prepared to stare up into the face of Burt Hummel in a dressing gown and large pink rabbit slippers.
"They were a gift," Burt said somewhat defensively noticing that Sebastian was staring at his slippers with a judging look in his eye.
"Who from, the sugar-plum-fairy?" Sebastian sneered.
"One of Kurt's friends," Burt answered.
"Brittany," Sebastian guessed and the older man nodded.
"So… did you sleep ok?" Burt asked before taking a gulp from his own cup of coffee.
"I slept great," Sebastian replied with a smirk as he recalled Kurt sneaking into his room in the middle of the night.
"Good, good," Burt nodded oblivious to Sebastian's sexual thoughts about his son.
Silence. Awkward silence in fact. It stretched on for quite some time. Every now and then Burt would open his mouth as though he intended to say something but he always changed his mind. As for Sebastian, he made no effort to make small talk or begin a conversation. He just quietly drank his coffee and did his best not to show his discomfort.
The prolonged and uncomfortable silence between Sebastian and Burt was broken by the arrival of Rachel Berry.
"Good morning," she greeted the pair as she joined them in the garden, fully dressed and holding a glass of juice. "I trust you both slept well. I had a very peaceful slumber myself. I dreamt that the New Directions were performing at Nationals and Barbara was one of the judges. Then after the show she came backstage to tell me how much she adored my solo and then she and I sang a duet. There was also a rainbow coloured sheep running around on stage. It did a very impressive break-dance number with Mike and Brittany but I'm not entirely sure what it represents. I'll have to talk it over with my therapist."
"I think I'm just gonna go wake Jesse up," Sebastian said rising to his feet. "And just to be clear, that doesn't mean I'm in love with him and cheating on Kurt."
He moved past them and placed his used coffee mug in the kitchen sink before heading upstairs.
"He's really messed up that kid," Burt muttered under his breath.
"He is very troubled," Rachel agreed. "But underneath the arrogance and the rudeness I'm sure there is a perfectly lovely boy. Just like Noah and Quinn and Santana. They act tough and a lot of the time they can be mean but if you take the time to get past that frosty exterior they can be amazingly sensitive. And well, Kurt cares about him. That has to mean Sebastian is special. I can see you and Sebastian haven't really had the opportunity to bond yet. Perhaps we could work on that today. The two of you could sing a duet."
"That's nice, Rachel, but no thanks," Burt replied. "Kurt likes him and he's happy. That's what matters."
"I couldn't agree more," Rachel declared finishing her juice. "Oh, Carole's started breakfast. I guess I better go and wake Finn."

"Mmm, Carole, these waffles are heaven," Jesse complimented.
"Absolutely," Blaine agreed. "Everything's delicious."
"So, gang, what shall we do today?" Rachel asked and Sebastian scrunched his nose distastefully over being referred to as part of Rachel's 'gang'.
"We could have a Halo tournament," Finn suggested and Rachel sent him a look. "Or not. No, definitely not. That's a bad idea."
"Perhaps we could all take a walk," Rachel mused. "See if we can get inspired to compose some original songs. I hope to release my own album one day full of songs I wrote myself. After my Broadway debut and first Tony award of course."
"We could go shopping," Kurt said hopefully.
"How about swimming?" Blaine asked.
"Sorry, Blainers, but I didn't pack any swimming trunks," Jesse pointed out. "What do you want to do, Bas?"
"Actually, I'm probably just gonna head back to Dalton," Sebastian shrugged.
"Wait, what?" Kurt asked. "We'd planned to stay for dinner and then head back."
"Yeah, I know," Sebastian answered. "And you're all welcome to stay I just… I think I'm gonna head back. Thanks for breakfast, Carole. Excuse me," he said before heading upstairs.
"Burt, honey, what did you say to him?" Carole asked accusingly.
"Hey, I didn't say anything," Burt responded defensively.
"It's my fault," Rachel sighed. "Clearly I've made him uncomfortable by incorrectly accusing him of cheating yesterday."
"It isn't anybody's fault," Jesse explained. "Sebastian just isn't comfortable in family situations."
"Why not?" Rachel asked.
"None of Y.B… your business," Jesse told her with a smile.
"I have to go talk to him," Kurt said and Carole looked to Burt pointedly.
"No, you finish your breakfast, Kurt," Burt insisted. "I'll go have a word with him. Man to man."
"What? No, bad idea," Kurt objected.
"Kurt, sweetie, eat your breakfast," Carole encouraged as Burt headed up after Sebastian.

In the spare room, Sebastian was busying himself by packing his things into his bag. Being around Kurt's family was just too much for him. All he wanted to do was get back to Dalton and hide away in the safety of the school walls.
"Mind if I come in, kid?" Burt asked from the doorway.
"Yes," Sebastian responded without hesitation.
"Tough," Burt replied bluntly. "It's my house after all," he pointed out as he stepped inside the room shutting the door behind him.
"I don't need a lecture," Sebastian huffed. "So whatever heartfelt speech you have prepared you can just save it. Reserve your papa bear talks for Kurt and Finn."
Having quickly dressed himself before Burt had arrived, Sebastian screwed up his pyjamas and shoved them into his bag. He then tried to zip it shut but the bag didn't seem to want to close.
"Fuck," Sebastian swore in frustration throwing the bag across the bed.
"Sit down, kid," Burt said patiently.
"No," Sebastian refused stubbornly glaring at his boyfriend's father defiantly.
"Fine, stand," Burt shrugged as he leaned against the door, blocking Sebastian's exit. "Now, let's just have a nice calm talk."
"I don't want to talk," Sebastian snapped.
"No, you just wanna run away," Burt replied. "Do you know what running away is, Sebastian? Its just cowardice. Cowardice and fear. And if you don't step up and be brave and face those fears then you're just gonna be running your whole life."
"Oh, blah, blah, blah," Sebastian drawled.
"I know what happened with your parents, kid," Burt said gently and Sebastian stiffened. "I'm really sorry about your mum."
Closing his eyes, Sebastian swallowed the lump that had been forming in his throat since Burt had handed him a cup of coffee that morning. Taking a steadying breath, he opened his eyes and glared at the blue carpet under his feet. He wished Burt Hummel would just move out of his way and let him go.
"I didn't like you when I first met you," Burt admitted. "And I can't say I'm your biggest fan now. But knowing about your childhood and your parents, I understand you better, I get where you're coming from. And for your sake, and for Kurt's and your friends, I just wanna tell you one thing."
"And what might that be?" Sebastian asked lifting his eyes to meet Burt's face. "Don't worry; you're nothing like your father. Don't blame yourself, you're an innocent victim. Be brave, you can get through this. Your mother will always love you; you'll make her so proud. Don't shut us out, we can be your family," Sebastian mockingly listed some of the types of things he expected Mr. Hummel to say.
"Kid," Burt said and Sebastian smirked as he awaited whatever clichéd emotional garbage would spill from the man's mouth. "Get over it."
"What?" Sebastian asked in shock, the smirk slipping off his face.
"You had a hard childhood," Burt acknowledged. "I'm sorry you went through what you did. But do yourself a favour… get over it."
Sebastian remained quiet. 'Get over it' was not what he had expected to hear.
"Are we done?" Sebastian asked with an impatient huff. "Can I go now?"
Straightening up, Burt moved away from the door and took a few steps closer to Sebastian. He raised his arms and Sebastian stepped back with a violent flinch, expecting to be hit. Pausing in his movements, Burt made direct eye-contact with the teenage boy and slowly moved closer before pulling Sebastian into a hug.
Startled, Sebastian completely tensed up at the contact. His throat ached and his eyes stung. He felt an overwhelming urge to simply cry and he didn't like it one bit. He made to pull away from Burt's hold but the man clung to him tighter, shushing him in the soothing tones one commonly uses for a baby.
"I'm not gonna hurt you," Burt told him gently. "Not every father is a monster."
Without making a conscious decision to do so, Sebastian found himself hugging back. His throat still burned with the urge to cry, he didn't understand why Burt was hugging him and he still desperately wanted to run from the room.
"You're a good kid, Sebastian," Burt said quietly rubbing the boy's back.
Sebastian's body was still taut with tension, the situation was still painfully awkward for both men and Sebastian still didn't like the fact that he felt so close to tears.
The hug ended and Sebastian wrapped his arms around himself and stared down at the blue carpet again. Several moments of awkward silence passed between them before Burt clapped Sebastian on the shoulder and then left.
Feeling as though he was suffocating, Sebastian crossed to the window and pushed it open, sticking his head out and breathing in the fresh air. He inhaled and exhaled slowly, trying to calm himself down and overcome the overwhelming need to cry. When he felt he had regained control of himself, he held his head high with an air of determination before making his way back downstairs to rejoin the others.
Kurt and Blaine stood up, both boys looking at him with concern. Carole smiled at him warmly and Burt just nodded in acknowledgement. Finn seemed to be actively avoiding eye-contact while Rachel was openly staring at him quizzically. Jesse was so busy admiring his reflection in the metal of his fork to realise Sebastian was even in the room.
"Oh hey, Bas," Jesse greeted finally noticing his friend.
"So… are you feeling better?" Kurt asked lamely. "We've talked about it and if you really want to just head back to Dalton then we'll come too."
"No," Sebastian shook his head.
"Does that mean you're staying then?" Blaine asked.
"Of course he's staying," Jesse answered as though it were obvious. "And as nobody else had any better ideas I have taken it upon myself to organise the day's entertainment."
"No nudity," Burt told him.
"Absolutely not, Mr. Hummel, I am far too innocent for such forms of debauchery," Jesse responded and Kurt and Blaine sniggered while Carole also looked amused. "No, I have decided that we shall all engage in the classic game of Twister. I assume you own it?" He asked.
"Um… no," Finn answered and Jesse frowned. "But Puck has Twister. We could ask him if we could borrow it. We could invite everybody from Glee and all play together."
"No," Rachel objected. "Artie can't play Twister. He's in a wheelchair," she pointed out. "If we're going to do something with the rest of our fellow Glee Clubbers then it should be something that Artie can participate in to."
"We could have a Harry Potter movie marathon," Blaine said excitedly.
"No," Jesse and Sebastian groaned.
"We're only staying until after dinner," Kurt reminded him. "We don't have time to watch all the Harry Potter movies. I still think we should just go to the mall."
They continued to debate about what they should do with the day before they somehow ended up at Rachel's house performing songs on the stage in her basement.

"Thank you for a lovely day, Rachel," Jesse said. "Your talent is outstanding. You, my lovely Berry, are a natural born star."
"I know," Rachel smiled arrogantly. "And I must say your solo numbers were breathtaking. But our duets were simply award-winning. The combination of our voices is just Broadway gold."
As they gushed about one another's talents, as well as bragging about their own, Rachel began to get a love-struck look on her face.
"Oh no, she's getting starry-eyed over Jesse again," Kurt pointed out and Finn frowned. "You'd better go get your boyfriend back, Blaine."
"Thank you, Rachel," Blaine said pointedly as he took Jesse's hand in his. "We had a lovely time."
"So cute," Rachel whispered watching Blaine lead Jesse away.
"And still gay," Kurt pointed out to her patting her on the shoulder.
"Right, of course," Rachel shook her head, shaking away the gooey-eyed school-girl look as she did so. "Drive safely and call me later. We don't talk enough since you transferred. I miss my best gay."
"Oh, I miss you too," Kurt told her pulling her in for a tight hug.
They made their final goodbyes before heading back to the Hummel-Hudson residence for dinner.

With dinner digesting in their stomachs and bags packed and loaded in the car, goodbyes were made.
"See you, Kurt," Finn said giving his step-brother a hug. "Um, later, dudes," he said to Sebastian, Jesse and Blaine before daring to ruffle Kurt's hair then running inside.
"Bye Carole," Kurt said giving his step-mother a tight hug.
"You take care, sweetie," Carole replied hugging him just as tight. "You boys be good," she added to the other three before hugging them each in turn.
Kurt and Burt shared a long hug.
"I love you, kiddo," Burt told him.
"I love you too," Kurt replied reluctant to let go.
"Good to meet you, Blaine," Burt said shaking the shortest boy's hand.
"You too, Burt, thanks for letting us stay over," Blaine said politely.
"Oh any time," Carole smiled and Burt grimaced slightly but nodded.
"It was wonderful to meet you, Mr. Hummel," Jesse said. "And though our love is of the forbidden kind you shall always be in my heart. It pains me that our time together has already reached an end. Try not to miss me too much." He threw his arms around Burt and pressed a kiss to his cheek.
"Get off," Burt told him uncomfortably as he forced him away.
"He so wants me," Jesse stated arrogantly. "I call shot-gun!" He declared before running to the passenger seat of Kurt's car.
"Take care, kid," Burt said to Sebastian and he quietly nodded before joining the others in the car.
XXX
The drive back to Dalton was a nightmare. Jesse, Blaine and Sebastian squabbled over what music to listen to and it caused a terrible pounding in Kurt's skull.
"I spy with my little eye, something beginning with… P," Jesse said.
"Pig, penguin, pencil, person, pineapple," Blaine guessed.
"No, no, no, no and no," Jesse answered smugly. "Give up?"
"No," Blaine refused. "Porsche, patio, potato, perfume, photosynthesis?"
"Not even close, baby," Jesse told him.
"Photo, panther, pink, polio, prostitute?" Blaine guessed desperately.
"Oh just tell him what it is," Sebastian huffed.
"Penis!" Jesse declared triumphantly freeing his penis from the confines of his trousers.
"Jesse, please, put yourself away," Kurt begged looking scandalised.
"I spy with my little eye, something beginning with C," Blaine said.
"Car," Jesse and Sebastian guessed together.
"Damn it," Blaine complained annoyed that they guessed correctly on their first go.
"I spy with my little eye…" Jesse began.
"No, no more 'I spy'," Kurt insisted. "I forbid it."
"Kurt, I'm starting to feel sick," Blaine said.
"And I need to relieve my bladder and stretch my legs," Jesse said.
"I need to make-out with my boyfriend," Sebastian smirked.
"I need a break," Kurt muttered to himself before finding a safe place to pull over.
After their quick stop they drove the rest of the way with Blaine sitting in the front continuously asking 'are we there yet?' In the back seat, Jesse and Sebastian had their shirts off, viciously twisting one another's nipples.
To Be Continued
